The Unblemished Copy

I read an article about how avid readers went out in droves over the weekend to pick up virgin copies of Freedom before the stores were inundated with ones slathered with Oprah's Book Club stickers.  That made me laugh because I was in Borders on Friday morning and they ALL said "Franzen IS Oprah's Bitch After All".  Not really.  But...they had the sticker.  Fortunately, I bought my copy a couple of weeks before all the brouhaha started.  Supposedly, my copy will be much much better than the ones laboring under the All Powerful Oprah Stamp of Approval

Haha! I was one of those crazies. I was intending to buy the book anyway, but as soon as I caught wind of the announcement, I rushed out to get the book pre-Oprah stamp. Nothing against Oprah, but I hate the stupid stamp. I don't even like the movie tie-in covers on books. Ugh. :D

Oooo Oprah Stamp is the kiss of death. I won't read a book if she recommends it. I tried 2 or 3 of her choices and ewwwww...

Darn. I missed it. I don't want one with a dirty Oprah sticker on it.

I don't really have anything against Oprah and there are some things she does that I really admire, but I too am not a fan of the book club picks. I keep wondering if Oprah really reads all the books she chooses and, okay, even if she does read those, how many other books does she read that make her picks so special?

I assume she's got a pretty busy celebrity life but even say she has the down time to get through two or three books a month her special selections will be chosen out of the 24 to 30 books she reads in a year and millions of people will rush out to read them because *she* said they were good books. Now here's me, also a Chicagoan, reading three times that many books in a year and yet my top picks are only going to be received by the small minority of the world that reads my blog. *sigh* I'm sure Franzen's book is pretty decent too, but I'm certainly not about to read it just because Oprah gave it her seal of approval. :-P

(Sorry if that came out too snarky, and I do think that's funny that plenty of people agree that her stamp does not a good book make!)

LOL!! We're actually starting an "Oprah Book Club Challenge...we will not cry" in a week or so. Typically I loathe all Oprah picks (they're always so sad) but since this is the last season of her show I thought it would be fun. Really, it's just a mockery...our challenge that is.
