Books We Didn't Finish -December Issue

When you Disappeared - I really wanted to love this book.  But it was so boring.  I honestly didn't care what happened to Simon and why he left.  I couldn't make it past the first 20%,

Your House is on Fire, Your Children are all Gone -  I'm not even sure why I tried this book.  I think I was lured in by the cover.  The stories that take place in the town were just too disturbing to keep going.  It was weird and made no sense.  I didn't want to continue after the second story.

People Who Eat Darkness - So, I'm not quite sure I would make this a complete DNF as I listened to about 75% of the book.  I thought most of the book was well written and interesting.  Especially the history of hostesses and the club industry in Japan.  However, once the trial began, I started to get bored.  I think there was just too much detail.  I ended up looking up the trial results online instead.

December Mini Musings

You Can't Hide (Shadow House 2): This is the sequel to The Gathering. It's a quick read.  I won't lie, I'm still not completely sure what is going on in this overall story.  I think there really needs to be more explanations of what is going on.  I may seek out the final book to hopefully get some resolution.  I think middle graders will like this as it is spooky and pretty fast paced.

Only For You: This is the second book in the Sugar Lake series.  It's a stand alone, so you don't need to read the first one to read this one.  I was kind of underwhelmed by the book.  I didn't buy into the romance because it was so much a lust at first sight book. I get that you can be really attracted to someone, but they didn't even know each other. Honestly, it was like a pheromone overload. I didn't really feel like they spent enough time together to warrant forever. Don't get me wrong, it has a sweet HEA, but it wasn't for me.

13 Minutes:  Another YA that was kind of OK.  None of the characters are really likable or very realistic.  They were all kind of mean girl cliches. There was so much drug use and smoking in it.  Do teens really smoke that much anymore? The twist about 3/4 of the way through was good, but not surpassing.  The ending was weird and not satisfying.  I'm not totally sure I would recommend it.

Spotlight: Sale Blitz for Bad Neighbor by M. O'Keefe

Today we are sharing the sale for BAD NEIGHBOR by M. O'Keefe! This is the first book in Bad Boy Romance series. BAD NEIGHBOR is currently .99 cents (for just a few days!) or you can read it for FREE on KindleUnlimited.

Author: M. O'Keefe
Date of publication:November 2016

He's sexy... He's dangerous... He's right next door.

I gave up everything to save my sister from a monster, and now I’m lying low in this rundown apartment so I can stay out of danger. Hiding from everyone. Except for the guy in apartment 1A. He’s rude. Silent. Muscled, mysterious, and hot as hell. I don’t know if he likes me or hates me, but the more time I spend with him, the less it matters. I want him. And for the first time in my life I'm going to go after what I want.

She doesn’t belong in my world.

From the second 1B moves in, I know she’s keeping secrets. She doesn’t belong here, much less with a street fighter like me. But that doesn’t stop me from craving her. Her softness and sweetness. She’s a drug, and suddenly I’m addicted. I know someone is going to try and hurt her and I can’t let that happen. But unless I push her away and get her out of my world, that someone could be me…

Molly O'Keefe has always known she wanted to be a writer (except when she wanted to be a florist or a chef and the brief period of time when she considered being a cowgirl). She loves exploring every character's road towards happily ever after. Shelter by Jay Crownover

Author: Jay Crownover
Publisher: Self
Date of publication: December 2017

Sutton Warner is a mess. Everything in his life feels like it’s unraveling.

He’s let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn’t.

Emrys Santos is lost. Everything in her life feels pointless and futile.

She’s been busy running away from her feelings and all the people who love her the most—including her best friend, the one person who knows exactly what she’s been through. They promised to always stick together and to lean on one another. It was a promise Em had to break so she could lick her wounds and figure out her next move. For once, there is no easy way out of the tangled web of emotions she’s caught up in, and right now, she recognizes that all roads lead back to Wyoming…and back to Sutton.

'
In Shelter, Em has finally come back to the ranch in an effort to set things straight with Sutton.  It takes place about six months after the events of Retreat.  She find Sutton in a very bad way and hopes she can help him find his way back. Shelter can be read as a stand alone, but to fully understand what Em and Sutton went through, you should read Retreat first. But, it's not really necessary.

Just when I think Jay Crownover has reached her best, she manages to top herself in her next book.  I absolutely loved Shelter.  I can honestly say that I am emotionally drained (in a good way) after reading this book.  It has some gut wrenching scenes and bittersweet moments. But ultimately, it was so satisfying watching three people find home and safety in an unlikely family.  I didn't want the story to end.   While loved Emrys and Sutton together, little Daye was the character who stole my heart. The scene by the river when Sutton has to tell her bad news had me in tears.

The mystery was good with some final scenes that had me holding my breath.  I'm not going to give the plot away.  Just go read it.  This is definitely making my top 10 for 2017.  I need Lane's story, Escape, now!  I also hope Ten will get her own story.  Please?

Alex didn’t care if things had changed. Of course things had changed. That was what things did. They changed. Things could look exactly the same on the outside and be completely different on the inside.
Which was a metaphor for jack shit. And it didn’t bother him in the least.
He filled three mugs, leaving the fourth empty for when Jack appeared. He set one on the counter next to where Becca was scrambling eggs and then took his and Gabe’s to the table.
“You, uh, said something about Dad rehiring Hick, right? Does he do the morning chores?” Alex asked.
“He handles most of the stuff with the cattle. I see to the horses. I’m sure Hick’ll be glad to have help though. He’s been hiring some seasonal staff, but it’s hard when we don’t have a place for them to stay.”
“Obviously…” Alex trailed off at the sound of a—he actually didn’t know what that sound was. Gabe was looking around the kitchen trying to find the source of it too.
Becca cursed and wiped her hands on a towel before tossing it onto the counter. “Damn it, Ron Swanson.”
Alex exchanged confused glances with Gabe. Gabe shrugged. Becca hurried out of the kitchen and Alex followed her. She went straight toward Dad’s office, which caused Alex to pause.
Before she could get to the hallway that led to the office and the mudroom, an animal clopped forward.
Becca fisted her hands on her hips. “You know you’re not supposed to do this,” she scolded.
The animal was not a dog or a cat or any normal inside, domesticated pet. It was a goat. And it bleated at her as if in answer.
What the fuck?
Becca glanced over her shoulder at him. “Ron Swanson here figured out how to use the doggie door. When he’s feeling particularly mischievous, he tends to try and sneak in.”
“Why…” So many whys. “Why do you have a goat who sneaks in through a dog door?”
“Long story. Will you finish with the eggs while I get him back outside where he belongs?”
“Yeah. You grab the goat, and I’ll fix the eggs. This is totally normal.”
She laughed. Such a pretty sound. Oddly comforting. Strange to realize it was something he hadn’t had enough of in the past ten years—pretty women laughing.
“If you came here looking for normal, boy, you came to the wrong place,” she said, sounding mostly amused.
She lunged for the goat then, and Alex watched with morbid fascination. She got her arms around its neck, but it bleated and kicked and Becca swore.
“You’re feisty today, Ron. I really don’t like it when you’re feisty,” she muttered to the goat.
To. The. Goat.
The goat bucked again and Becca lost her grip as she dodged the kick. The goat took off toward the kitchen. Without thinking the action through, Alex made a move to block the hallway, but the goat was a tiny, little thing and darted right between his legs.
“The hell?”
“Goats are very smart,” Becca replied, hurrying past him. “We better get him before he eats everything.”
“Again, how do you have a goat that goes through the doggie door?”
“It’s a—”
“Long story, right.” He followed her to the kitchen, his long strides easily matching Becca’s jog.
Back in the kitchen, Gabe was standing in the corner by the stove looking wide-eyed and horrified. Alex could hardly blame him. The damn animal was now standing on top of the kitchen table.
“Why the fuck is there a goat on the kitchen table?” Gabe asked, all but pressing himself into the corner of the counter.
“You’re more afraid of a goat than a sniper?” Alex asked, grinning.
“Damn straight. I know what the hell to do with a sniper.”
“He’s mostly harmless, just desperate to be human,” Becca said, calmly studying the goat.
Alex didn’t know how to feel about this except baffled and entertained all at the same time. “With a name like Ron Swanson, I can’t say I blame him.”
“Do they bite?” Gabe demanded.
Becca laughed again, and Alex didn’t fail to notice Gabe had much of the same reaction he did—a startled look at Becca. Then a little bit of a smile at the sound.
It was a strange moment, all in all, to feel with a true, bone-deep certainty he’d done the right thing and come to the right place. He didn’t often let himself doubt it, but they needed this—laughter and home. Even if it meant a goat on the kitchen table.
“All right. Who’s going to help me grab him?” Becca asked.
Alex felt a certain lightness that had definitely been missing for a while. “Since Gabe’s a coward, I think it’ll be me.”
She pressed her lips together like she was trying not to smile as she stood next to one corner of the table. Alex situated himself across from her. Her gaze met his over the body of the miniature goat.
She grinned, a full-on grin he would never have expected from her.
“Welcome home, Alex,” she said, green eyes dancing with humor.
He could only laugh.

His life is chaos and confusion. It’s a storm of uncertainty and raging emotion.

Sutton Warner is a mess. Everything in his life feels like it’s unraveling.

He’s let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn’t.

The truth is, he’s used to disappointing the women in his life. First was his mother who couldn’t find a reason to stick around when he was growing up. Then there’s his ex. The woman who takes unbridled delight in making his life incredibly complicated. Luckily, his daughter is still young enough to believe her old man is some kind of hero. But, he knows the day is coming when she realizes the truth, that he’s just a man with some serious flaws and a list of ever-growing weaknesses.

Finally, there’s the woman he’s desperately trying to forget with every shot tossed back and each pill popped.

He more than disappointed Emrys…he almost got her killed.

Her love is steady and sure. It’s a shelter shaped by conviction and silent assurance.

The man she nearly got killed.

I’d been fooled once by the promise of quiet nights and serene days in the sunshine. I believed the brochure when it said I could leave my worries at home and escape to a simpler, quieter kind of life. I let myself be lured in by the picturesque landscape and stunning mountains. I foolishly fell prey to the temptation of leaving my current set of troubles behind in San Francisco while I hid away in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming.

I now knew firsthand the glossy brochure that brought me to Wyoming the first time was nothing more than a bunch of pretty, packaged lies. I knew the bar brawl erupting in front of me was hardly the worst thing that could happen here. In fact, the level of bloodshed and violence was child’s play compared to what I’d witnessed the last time I’d stepped foot in this small, quaint town. Well, I hadn’t really been in Sheridan last time I was here. I’d spent most of my time in the backwoods that surrounded the Warner brothers’ ranch, which was still a good forty-five minutes outside of this tiny town. The ranch was where I was currently trying to get to so I could see my best friend.

When I left Wyoming, I told myself I would never come back.

 Ever.

I told myself there was nothing here for me but bad memories and heartache. I was a pro at lying to myself, at telling myself exactly what I needed to hear to justify my actions. I could convince myself of anything, like it was okay that my last boyfriend stole my grandmother’s silver when I kicked him out because he needed it more than I did. I had no problem believing that pulling Leo out of the city was the only way to heal her broken heart even though she didn’t want to go. It was easier to distract her than it was to watch her wallow. I persuaded myself into believing what I needed to heal was space and solitude. I held onto that until time passed and I was still a mess. I was sick of my own company and of hiding from everything I was feeling. I was the one who always went out of my way to fix everyone else around me, it wasn’t exactly a shock to learn I didn’t have the skills to repair myself. I spent my days helping others focus on their goals, on doing better and achieving more, so I didn’t have to think about the lack of any ambition of my own. I turned thirty at the end of the year and I was still trying to figure out what and who I wanted to be when I grew up. I’d been aimless for a long time; the only direction in my life come from the fact I knew all the way down to my bones that I had to go back to Wyoming and face off with Sutton Warner.

Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Author: Julia Quinn
Publisher: Avon
Date of publication: March 2016

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

I was really happy to pick up another amusing and sweet historical romance.  Because of Miss Bridgerton is a very sweet friends to lovers story.  It's kind of a prequel to to the Bridgerton series as it takes place years before that series.  Focusing mainly on the Rokesby family. this is "Billie" and George's story.

I had a lot of fun reading this one. The banter between George and Billie was so good and easy.  I loved them together and enjoyed watching them slowly realize their feelings for each other.  One of the  funniest scenes was the croquet scene.  It had several laugh out loud moments. The other characters in the book rounded out the story nicely. I love how the two families were so close to each other.   If you are in the mood for a story about two people who don't seem to fit finding home in each other, this is the story for you.  I definitely recommend it.

Spotlight: Excerpt of Velvet & Vows by Stacy Eaton

Author: Stacy Eaton
Date of publication: December 2017

The epic finale of the Celebration Series is finally here. Celebrate Christmas once again with the couple that started it all: Casey Lowe and Thad Wagner.

Velvet & Vows starts out twenty days before the wedding and there is a lot to be done. With wedding showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, the final dress fittings, holiday preparations and the last of the details for the ceremony and reception, Celebration is crackling with energy—but it’s not all good.

With a few misunderstandings, many secrets and a serial arsonist running rampant in the town, the days leading up to the wedding are far more stressful than Casey and Thad ever planned for it to be. It will take the entire town to tell this story as we pass from one leading character to another.

Prepare yourself for this one-of-a-kind novel that will bring insight into every character you’ve fallen in love with during the series, and even a few characters you’ve never heard from first hand.

The sound of Thad’s heartbeat thrummed steadily under my ear and begged me to stay in bed forever—or at least a few more hours—but we both had to get ready for work.

I sighed heavily, and he tightened his arm around my back. “Only a few more weeks and we will be away from here—just you and me—enjoying ten days of bliss on the beach.”

I tilted my head back and gazed into his handsome face. I couldn’t believe that Thad and I were getting married in three weeks. It had been basically a year since we’d met and he’d saved me from my psychotic ex. I had reflected back on that night many times over the last eleven months and was thankful that Thad was so perceptive and followed his gut on so many things.

“I can’t believe it’s almost here,” I replied and squeezed his torso. “Three more weeks and you will officially be mine—forever.”

“Yep, I’ll officially be Mr. Thaddeus Lowe.”

“You’re not taking my name,” I teased.

He kissed the top of my head. “At home I will, but you know at work I have to stay Officer Wagner.”

“I thought it was going to be Sergeant Wagner soon.”

He smirked and tapped my nose. “You weren’t supposed to know about that.” He paused, “Let me guess: Missy told you?”

“No.” I shook my head and pushed off his chest to sit up. He grabbed my arm and pulled me back down.

“You aren’t getting away from me that easily.” He shifted and rolled me over to my back, laying his leg over mine so he could use his weight to hold me down. “Who told you? It had to be Missy.”

“No.” I grinned and then pushed my leg to the side so it slipped up the inside of his, my thigh coming in contact with his groin. He moaned as he clamped his eyes shut. “It wasn’t Missy,” I whispered seductively.

While he was a little distracted, I shifted and hustled out of the bed while he tried to drag me back. “No, get back here.”

I laughed. “I have to get to work, and so do you,” I told him when he managed to pull me back to the bed with his arms around my waist.

“I’ll let you go, but you have to tell me who told you. It was supposed to be a surprise.”

“It was a surprise.” I leaned forward and kissed him before I pushed on his shoulders to get away. “It would have been a better surprise if you had told me and not your sister.”

Thad’s hands dropped as he gave me an odd look. “Corrine? How the hell did she know?”
