Release Blitz: Tame the Heart by Ava Hunter

Wild hearts can't be tamed.

Tame the Heart by Ava Hunter is now live!

Keeping my heart guarded all my life has never been an issue. Until he saves me in a bar fight.

Charlie Montgomery is one grumpy rancher. Calloused hands, stubborn heart, the definition of a true cowboy.

He dislikes me from the second we meet. Warns me away from his tiny town of Resurrection, Montana. Well, what he doesn’t know is I’m armed with a bucket list and a secret. There’s no way I’m leaving. I’ll just keep my distance.

Only in a small town that distance doesn’t last for long. Because I owe him a favor: Work for him for three months and help him save his home. Runaway Ranch.

But our close confines mean I see what’s under all that strong. I see the real Charlie Montgomery. The man behind the rugged rancher who yells. Beneath his dark beard hides a rare smile. Beneath his mile-wide chest beats a tender heart. One that slowly starts to beat for me.

And instead of running back onto that open road, I run towards Charlie instead.

But a hidden danger is lurking. Someone who doesn't want Charlie to save his ranch. Someone who is out to get us both. And I could lose more than my heart this summer—I could lose my life…

Review: The Retreat by Karen King

Author: Karen King
Publisher: Bookouture
Publication Date: October 2023

The sunlight dances on the turquoise pool as I wait for our first guests. But my blood turns to ice when I recognize one of them as an old friend and a flood of guilt and fear comes rushing back. Is she here to ruin my life for a second time?

‘It’s been so long’, Saskia says as she hugs me. I plaster the smile back on my face, my hands shaking as I usher our guests into the traditional Spanish farmhouse we’ve spent years renovating to perfection. Saskia and I had been so close, until she betrayed me.

Now I’ve started a new life here in Spain. I met José and fell in love with his deep brown eyes, and together we opened our own retreat nestled high in the mountains. But José has no idea about the real me – I know he wouldn’t be able to look me in the eye if he ever found out that I have blood on my hands.

Then I discover our beautiful water fountain stained a deep red. My heart pounds with fear because it feels like a warning. And all my worst nightmares are confirmed when I find a note in my bedroom, revealing my terrible secret.

I was with Saskia all day, so I know it can’t be her. Which means that someone else at the retreat knows the truth about me – and they’re here for revenge.

But this perfect new life means everything to me. And I’ll do anything to protect it…

A totally unputdownable psychological thriller packed with jaw-dropping twists. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Mark Edwards and K.L. Slater.

In The Retreat, a couple has invited a small group of people to to help launch their new retreat/resort.  It has to be a success in order for it to succeed.  However, it seems someone is out to sabotage the retreat. Can Eva figure it out before everything is ruined?

This was an Ok mystery.  I found the pacing to be a bit slow. I also didn't really like any of the characters. It was hard to connect with any of them.  There is one reveal that was really obvious that I couldn't understand why Eva and Jose didn't think of it themselves.  The other revelations were fairly  underwhelming and ones that I have seen before.  It's not a bad story, it was just not as thrilling as I was hoping it would be.

She wiped her mouth on her napkin and nodded. “Summer Creek, I love. The area is incredible with all the farms and ranches, and the open spaces with sagebrush. The mountains are breathtakingly beautiful. Everyone I’ve met has been welcoming, kind, and genuine. However, you are the exception.” She shrugged. “Chef Owen Thorpe is a first-class phony.”

“Phony?” he asked, feigning amusement as he leaned back and draped one elbow over the high back of the stool. Had it been that easy for her to see through his forced smiles? Since he felt like a phony, he couldn’t exactly argue with her, but her words rankled all the same.

“Yes, a phony. You donned your I’m-A-Charmer personality the moment I arrived, like you slipped on your chef coat when you went out and walked through the restaurant earlier.” She twirled her fork between her fingers, looking at him with an intensity he found downright disturbing. “You might have wowed people in the culinary world years ago with that smile, but it’s not doing you any favors now. What is it you’re so threatened by, Chef, that you feel the need to act like you are the king and everyone in the kitchen is your loyal subject? There must be a good reason why you feel so resistant to my presence. Or do you act like a jerk to anyone who dares set foot in your kitchen?”

Owen lifted both eyebrows, taken aback by her words. She hadn’t raised her voice or altered her friendly tone. No shift in her serene expression. But the words she spoke practically made steam roll out of his ears.

When he remained silent, desperately trying to assemble a witty comeback, she continued with her unwanted assessment of his character. “You should trust your staff more instead of micromanaging them. Your assistant chef has a lot of untapped potential, and the young woman, Megan, who helped Pete, has an interest in becoming a pastry chef. You wouldn’t have to work so hard if you’d let go a little instead of holding so tightly to the mirage of control. It’s no wonder you’re tense, on edge, short-tempered, and cranky.”

“I’m not cranky,” Owen snapped, further infuriated by the smug smile on her face at his outburst.

Tawni Young certainly hadn’t held back her opinions of him. He wasn’t accustomed to people speaking to him so bluntly.

“I’m not cranky,” he repeated with a cool nonchalance he was far from feeling.

Review: The Night in Question by Kathleen Glasgow & Liz Lawson

Author: Kathleen Glasgow & Liz Lawson
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication Date: May 2023

Alice Ogilvie and Iris Adams became the talk of Castle Cove when they cracked the biggest case of the fall: the death of Brooke Donovan. Together, the Agathas put Brooke's killer away for good, and since then things around town have been almost back to normal. Quiet, even.

But if Alice and Iris know anything, it's that sometimes quiet is just the calm before the storm. The truth is, Brooke's disappearance wasn't the first mystery to rock Castle Cove, and it won't be the last. So when their school dance at the infamous Levy Castle—the site of film starlet Mona Moody's unsolved death back in the 1940s—is interrupted by a violent assault, Iris and Alice pull out their murder boards and get back to work.

To understand the present, sometimes you need to look into the past. And if the Agathas want a chance at solving their new case, that's exactly where they'll need to start digging. Only, what they uncover might very well kill them.

I really liked the first book, The Agathas so I was looking forward to The Night in Question.   This time around, Alice and Iris try to prove that their classmate is not responsible for stabbing another classmate at the school dance. This one should not be read as a stand alone.  It does spoil the first book for you.

I'll be honest, I was underwhelmed by this one.  It didn't draw me in like the first one did. The story was kind of boring.  I didn't feel the same excitement following  Iris and Alice while they solved the msytery.  Even the older mystery involving the movie star from the 1940s was underwhelming.  There was too much teen/romance angst and I just didn't care.  I'm hoping the next one is better than this one.

Review: Secrets Never Die by Vincent Ralph

Author: Vincent Ralph
Publisher: Wednesday Books (St. Martins Press
Publication Date:  August 2023

Every year Sam Hall and his friends hold funerals for their secrets in an abandoned hut in the woods that they call the Dark Place. But this year, their secrets are coming back from the dead...to terrorize them.

Sam is a former child star whose career went up in flames – literally. And no one, not even his best friend knows why. His friends each hold a secret pertaining to the night. A secret they would all like buried.

Now someone from the past is blackmailing them with their dangerous secrets. Sam isn’t sure who he can trust, who’s watching him – or how far he’s willing to go to bury the past once and for all.
When you’re alone in the dark, some things won’t stay hidden.

Secrets Never Die finds Sam and his friend visiting an abandoned shack in the woods every Halloween. One by one, they sit in the shed in the dark and offer up their secrets.  This year, someone  is listening and plans to use their secrets against them.

I though this was a solid and creepy YA msytery.  I liked Sam and found his story as a child actor interesting and tragic at the same time.  It was understandable that he had a need to protect his little sister from the same fate.  There were a lot of twists that kept me guessing.  I will admit that some of the "secrets"  were a little bit of a let down. Despite that, I had a good time reading it and liked the ending,  It was a surprise and came a little out of left field, but it was a good ending.  I do recommend this one.

Review: The Last Girls Standing by Jennifer Dugan

Author: Jennifer Dugan
Publisher:
G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Reader
Publication Date: August 2023

Sloan and Cherry. Cherry and Sloan. They met only a few days before masked men with machetes attacked the summer camp where they worked, a massacre that left the rest of their fellow counselors dead. Now, months later, the two are inseparable, their traumatic experience bonding them in ways no one else can understand.

But as new evidence comes to light and Sloan learns more about the motives behind the ritual killing that brought them together, she begins to suspect that her girlfriend may be more than just a survivor—she may actually have been a part of it. Cherry tries to reassure her, but Sloan only becomes more distraught. Is this gaslighting or reality? Is Cherry a victim or a perpetrator? Is Sloan confused, or is she seeing things clearly for the very first time? Against all odds, Sloan survived that hot summer night. But will she survive what comes next?

In The Last Girls Standing, Sloan and Cherry are the only survivors in a camp massacre that killed all of the counselors setting up the camp for the coming summer session.  Sloan can't quite remember what happened.  She only has the Cherry's version of events.  A chance look into a box in Cherry's closet makes Sloan think Cherry may be hiding a lot about that night.

I'll be honest, I'm not even sure what I think about this book. I did like the sapphic romance between Sloan and Cherry.  Because of that romance, I was surprised by the ending of the book.  I won't spoil it, but I will say that I'm not sure I liked it.  I get what the author was trying to do, but I would have liked a little more, like an epilogue.  There were too many unanswered questions and I'm just not a fan of endings that leave me with questions.  I would say give it a try.  I think YA msytery fans will enjoy it.

Gettin’ Figgy from Gail Haris is a small-town, opposites attract romance about Candy Cane Key's charming Greek restaurant and bar owner, Thanasis Diakos, and his wickedly attractive neighbor, Rose Verbeck.
While Rose is convinced Than-ass-is a complete Jack, but not Frost, he sees her as the ultimate thorn in his side. However after a few signature drinks, 'Gettin’ Figgy,' they just might discover each other’s sweet side.
The Man of the Month Club is a steamy small-town collection featuring a new hottie (or two!) every month. In 2023, escape to Candy Cane Key, Florida, and celebrate ALL the holidays with your favorite group of romance authors and their delicious paradise men. Can’t wait to see you there!

 My Thoughts:

Gettin' Figgy is the part of the Candy Cane Key series.  In this one, Rose has come back to the town to take dog sit for her parents.  She doesn't bargain on running into an old flame who she has held a grudge against since the left town 12 years before.  Thanasis looks at this as a second chance to win Rose back.  I thought this was really adorable.  I loved the flirting between the couple.  The pranks were really funny.  I loved Rose's spirit and how she loved tried to incorporate Halloween into the Christmas decor.  I definitely recommend this one.  It's a quick read and will leave you with a smile.

Thanasis doesn’t look amused. “You know kids live on this street. Stringing the lights to look like Santa is peeing off the side of the house isn’t appropriate. And having my elves holding a body bag with the rest of my Christmas decorations in it is borderline disturbing.”
I can’t help it. I snort with laughter. Thanasis’ eyes soften and I notice a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth. “I wanted us to become friends. To make peace.”
Doubtful. But I’ll play along. “Fine. Let’s be friends.”
“Too late. You don’t mess with a man’s yard.” I scoff,  Thanasis continues. “I want you to remember you started this.”
Started what? “Nothing has started. It’s finished. Consider that as me getting even for last night.”
“What happened last night?”
“You were being obscene.” I hate the way my eyes drift to his lips. His perfect teeth are on display with his sexy knowing smile. His tongue snakes out only a bit to wet his lips, but it’s enough to have me squeezing my thighs together.
“And you’re being childish by vandalizing my property.”
“Is it vandalizing if it’s an improvement? When you think about it, I did you a favor. Consider it my gift to you for Sweetest Day.”
“You definitely spiced up the neighborhood. I’ll see you for our playdate.”
I loathe the fact that he looks so sexy when he winks. I wonder if I can teach the dogs to pee on him.

Review: The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell

Author: Jessa Maxwell
Publisher: Atria Books
Publication Date: March 2023

For six amateur bakers, competing in Bake Week is a dream come true.

When they arrive at Grafton Manor to compete, they're ready to do whatever it takes to win the ultimate The Golden Spoon.

But for the show's famous host, Betsy Martin, Bake Week is more than just a competition. Grafton Manor is her family's home and legacy - and Bake Week is her life's work. It's imperative that both continue to succeed.

But as the competition commences, things begin to go awry. At first, it's small acts of sabotage. Someone switching sugar for salt. A hob turned far too high.

But when a body is discovered, it's clear that for someone in the competition, The Golden Spoon is a prize worth killing for...

To say I was underwhelmed by The Golden Spoon is an understatement.  I had really high hopes for this one.  The synopsis made it sound like a really good mystery.  6 contestants, sabotage and a murder can make for a great book.  Even the opening was intriguing starting off with a gruesome murder.  But after that it went down hill.  I probably should have DNF'd this one.

The characters were boring. I couldn't find one character that to root for. I did listen to the audiobook and even with the full cast of narrators, it was not easy to tell them apart. All of the male character points of view, sounded the same.  The women were a little easier to distinguish, but not by much. One of the male narrators had zero inflection in his voice. Every time his character was on, I zoned out.  The mystery was easy to solve, even the "twist" was easily to figure out.  I'm sad this was a miss. I had high hopes.  Maybe I would have liked it more had I read the physical book and not listened to the audio version.

Book Description:
Socially awkward, anxiety-riddled Beverly Bonnefinche only loves three things in life: her parents, books, and a homeless man named Bill. Without them, the only way Beverly manages to get by each day is with the help of a peculiar coping mechanism that allows her to dissolve her feelings. Yet everything changes for Beverly when she meets Henry, a persistent, friendly man who sees something in Beverly most people have missed. As their relationship develops, despite her best intentions, Beverly soon finds herself stepping outside of her carefully controlled life and forging new friendships.

It’s only when a series of twists and turns threatens to unravel her new life, and her mind, that Beverly must determine if she’s got it in her to stop trudging through life—and finally start living it.

Emotional, witty, and uplifting, Beverly Bonnefinche Is Dead is an unforgettable story of love, loss, friendship, and what it means to ultimately find the courage to be who you are.

Beverly’s story, more than any of my other stories, is a personal one. As a society we get physicals annually, we talk openly about physical diseases, and support those battling them. Mental health isn’t treated with the same care and openness. While we have taken great strides, there is still more work to do. Preventative mental health is a lifesaver. You deserve to be happy just like you deserve to be physically and mentally healthy.

Each person’s journey with a mental health crisis or disorder is different. This story, while completely fictional, has been my way of processing one of the hardest battles I’ve had to fight.

Please show empathy for each other, you never know what demons someone is fighting internally, or if they are fighting a battle for someone they love very much.

Take care of yourself and those around you. No matter how different and unique your mind is, you, like Beverly, are perfect the way you are.
