Can she be more than a mistress?
With a tarnished reputation, Mercy Lyndhurst expected to
become the Earl of Rochford’s mistress, not his wife. Immediately abandoned by
her husband after their wedding, Mercy transformed herself from commoner to
countess, vowing to protect the lands and people her husband was forced to
leave.
Over the past six years, William has restored the family
fortune all the while tortured by his memories of Mercy…and the dark night he
killed a man. When a threat draws him home, William learns just how much has
changed—including his wife. While the passion still flares between them, he fears
he has wounded her too badly to regain her trust. But as the danger grows they
must unite to save the estate…and possibly their marriage.
Betraying Mercy was a very quick read. it is a bit darker than I was expecting. Overall, I enjoyed the story. The characters were intriguing. William is a dark and tortured soul who has the weight of the world and his failing estate on his shoulders. Mercy is suddenly thrown into the role of countess of an estate after having been born a commoner. Worse, he leaves her on their wedding night and doesn't return for 6 years.
I really liked Mercy's character. I admired her bravery in doing what she needed to do to make sure the village around her didn't lose their homes. William was a little bit more of a mystery to me as I'm not sure I still understand why he was so tortured. But, I did have to commend him for the hard work he put into saving his estate.
There is a little bit of a mystery as to who is trying to sabotage the factory that Mercy is trying to get off the ground. Is someone trying to kill Mercy or is William the target? You'll have to read to find out. I thought the ending was sweet, but I felt like it was a little unfinished. There were a few unanswered questions, so maybe there will be a follow-up to this story in the future.

Betraying Mercy is author Amber Lin's venture into Harlequin historicals. The short novel is well written and moves quickly across a rocky path to the requisite HEA for the hero William, Lord Rochford and his childhood sweetheart Mercy.
