If Indiana Jones lived in the X-Files era, he might bear at least a passing resemblance to Nolan Moore -- a rogue archaeologist hosting a documentary series derisively dismissed by the "real" experts, but beloved of conspiracy theorists.
Nolan sets out to retrace the steps of an explorer from 1909 who claimed to have discovered a mysterious cavern high up in the ancient rock of the Grand Canyon. And, for once, he may have actually found what he seeks. Then the trip takes a nasty turn, and the cave begins turning against them in mysterious ways.
Nolan's story becomes one of survival against seemingly impossible odds. The only way out is to answer a series of intriguing questions: What is this strange cave? How has it remained hidden for so long? And what secret does it conceal that made its last visitors attempt to seal it forever?
I didn't know much about The Anomaly going into this audiobook. The basic set up is a group explorers who make of YouTube style documentaries. They investigate X-files type happenings and lore. Nolan, the star of the show thinks he has found a lost cave in the Grand Canyon. He and the crew set out to find it.
I ended up really enjoying this book. The beginning was a bit slow. But once they get into the cave, things really get going. I'm not usually claustrophobic or afraid of the dark. But, I felt it reading this. The author did a great job of creating a closed in and really creepy atmosphere. You really get a sense of hopelessness and the reality of the dire circumstances that the group experiences when they realize they are trapped. This is why you don't go exploring caves, people!
I won't spoil what the anomaly is for you. I will say that I thought it was a pretty cool concept. There were a few twists that kept me guessing. I'm not sure if this is a stand alone or if there will be more adventures with the group that is left over at the end. The ending kind of leaves it open for a second book. If there is one, I will definitely be picking it up.
