Review: The Restless Dark by Erica Waters

Author: Erica Waters
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: October 2022

Enter Cloudkiss Canyon at your own risk.

The Cloudkiss Killer is dead. Now a true-crime podcast is hosting a contest to find his bones.

Lucy was almost the serial killer’s final victim. Carolina is a true-crime fan who fears her own rage. Maggie is a psychology student with a little too much to hide.

All of them are looking for answers, for a new identity, for a place to bury their secrets.

But there are more than bones hiding in the shadows…sometimes the darkness inside is more frightening than anything the dead leave behind.

Perfect for fans of Sadie and Wilder Girls, this newest novel from Erica Waters follows three girls at a true-crime contest to find the bones of a lost killer—even as a mysterious force pulls at the contestants’ darkest desires.

The Restless Dark takes place in Cloudkiss Canyon during a true crime themed camping trip.  It's a contest to find the bones of a serial killer.  Lucy was his final girl and she has returned to hopefully find some peace.  Two other girls are there and they have their own alternative motives for being there. Who can be trusted and will they find what they are looking for?

I didn't really care too much for this book.  Literally nothing happened until about the last quarter of the book.  I never felt like anyone was in danger.  I did like the atmosphere.  The fog seemed ominous and creepy.  But that was about it.  I didn't care for any of the characters.  I had a hard time believing that once the podcasters found out one of the girls was under age that they would just let her stay.  I didn't love the ending and had way too many questions.  In the end, I just didn't get what I was hoping for with this book. I don't really recommend it.
