Review: Rift by Steven James

Author: Steven James
Publisher: Sky Turtle Nova
Publication Date: October 2024

Some doors were never meant to be opened. Some tales were never meant to be set free. When seventeen-year-old Sahara O’Saughnessy discovers a rift into the realm of lore, the most haunting stories she’s been telling her friends come to life, and she must find a way to stop them before they tear her world apart. RIFT explores loss, longing, and courage with spine-chilling suspense. Set within the Appalachian Mountains, it walks the boundaries between the known and the unknown.

Rift was a random pick on Hoopla.  It involves Sahara who is grieving the loss of her father.  She feels responsible for his  death.  When she takes a job at the library, she discovers a door in the library basement that seems to be a rift in reality.  Soon, stories she tells her friends keep coming to life.

I thought this was an enjoyable YA fantasy.  It was a refreshing change from the YA mysteries I have been reading lately.  I loved the rag tag bunch of friends that end up helping Sahara in her quest for what is really happening with the rift.  There were some surprises with a big twist toward the ending. I definitely didn't call it.  It does sort of end on a cliffhanger, so I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book. If you are looking for something a little different, I do recommend this one.
