Blog Tour: Review of Let it Snow by Cassie Cross

Title: Let It Snow
Author: Cassie Cross
Genre: Holiday Romance

Amy Winstead is a twenty something video producer who loves Christmas more than anyone she’s ever known. This year, the holidays are gonna be a lot less happy because she can’t afford the plane ticket home to celebrate with her family, and her best and oldest friend Josh is moving halfway across the country for a new job that he couldn’t turn down.

When Josh asks her to accompany him on his road trip from Texas to Connecticut and offers to pay for her plane ticket back home, how could Amy say no? He’s promised some fun surprises on the trip, and more time with him could never be a bad thing.

One surprise Josh hasn’t planned on is the record-breaking blizzard heading their way. They decide to wait out the storm in the charming town of Holly Hill, where a little holiday magic and a lot of snow combine to help Josh and Amy realize that the something that’s always simmered between them could easily become something more…

My thoughts:

Let it Snow is a quick friends to lovers romance that will leave you with a big smile at the end.  I flew through this one.  I absolutely loved Amy and Josh  together.  They had been best friends since literally birth.  It was so fun to watch them finally give in and admit their feelings for each other.  They had the cutest traditions.  Their chemistry was off the charts. As an aside, I have to admit that I totally related with Amy and her fear of change.  I hate change and have to slowly work my way up to dealing with it as well.   If you are looking for a really cute holiday story with a sweet ending, then I highly recommend this one!

Blog Tour: Review of The Christmas Plan by Samantha Chase

Author: Samantha Chase
Publication Date: November 2020

If only life was a cheesy holiday movie…
Unfortunately for Aspen Harris, her life doesnt even come close.

Finding herself unemployed just before the holidays, she has no choice but to move back home and in her parentshouse. And that means leaving behind her best friend Gabriel and all her dreams of someday owning her own chocolate shop. So when Gabe suggests she come to Silver Bell Falls to spend the holidays with his family, it seems like the perfect distraction.

Whats so great about holiday movies?
Dont people realize that living in an actual Christmas town is anything but magical?

Every year, Gabriel Andrews goes home to Silver Bell Falls to help his father run the family Christmas tree lot. When Aspen tells him she has to move to the other side of the country after losing her job, he suggests she come home with him for the holidays. Its the perfect way to spend as much time together as possible before a whole country separates them.

But this is Silver Bell Falls at Christmas time…between a mother with matchmaking tendencies, tight living quarters and far too much chocolate, it doesnt take very long for life to start imitating art.

My thoughts:

The Christmas Plan is the sixth and final book in the Silver Bell Falls series.  It can definitely be read as a stand alone.  The town is a "Christmas" town and one that I am, intrigued enough to want to go back and read the earlier books.  This is a friends to lovers story and ended up being an OK read for me.  The main reason is that I just had a hard time getting behind Gabe and Aspen as a couple.  They worked great as friends, but their romantic relationship felt a bit forced.  There was just no heat there.  I liked Aspen well enough, but Gabe drove me crazy.  He was kind of clueless.  The ending was sweet.  It is worth trying out, though.

Review: All the Best Lies by Joanna Schaffhausen

Author: Joanna Schaffhausen
Publisher: Minotaur Books
Publication Date: February 2020

FBI agent Reed Markham is haunted by one painful unsolved mystery: who murdered his mother? Camilla was brutally stabbed to death more than forty years ago while baby Reed lay in his crib mere steps away. The trail went so cold that the Las Vegas Police Department has given up hope of solving the case. But then a shattering family secret changes everything Reed knows about his origins, his murdered mother, and his powerful adoptive father, state senator Angus Markham. Now Reed has to wonder if his mother's killer is uncomfortably close to home.

Unable to trust his family with the details of his personal investigation, Reed enlists his friend, suspended cop Ellery Hathaway, to join his quest in Vegas. Ellery has experience with both troubled families and diabolical murderers, having narrowly escaped from each of them. She's eager to skip town, too, because her own father, who abandoned her years ago, is suddenly desperate to get back in contact. He also has a secret that could change her life forever, if Ellery will let him close enough to hear it.

Far from home and relying only on each other, Reed and Ellery discover young Camilla had snared the attention of dangerous men, any of whom might have wanted to shut her up for good. They start tracing his twisted family history, knowing the path leads back to a vicious killer—one who has been hiding in plain sight for forty years and isn't about to give up now.

All the Best Lies is the third book featuring Officer Ellery Hathaway and FBI agent Reed Markham.  This one picks up fairly soon after the events of the second book.  Reed has gone back to Vegas to try to solve his mother's cold case murder.  Ellery, who is on suspension from the force, follows him to give help where she can.

This was another great addition to the series.  The mystery of who killed Reed's mother was complex and kept me guessing. This one is kind of hard to talk about because there are a quite a few secrets and truths revealed about both Reed and Ellery.  There is one toward the end that I loved.  I won't spoil it for you.  The couple get a lot closer in this book.  I have loved watching Ellery slowly begin to trust Reed over this series.  I can't wait to see how their relationship progresses in the next book.  This is such a well written series and one I highly recommend.

Excerpt for DELAYED JUSTICE by Shirlee McCoy

Sasha Eastman had never been afraid to stand on a crowded street corner in Sheepshead Bay, New York. She’d waited at crosswalks hundreds of times, standing amid throngs of people all staring at phones or streetlights and then flowing like lemmings across the roads. She knew the ebb of city life—the busy, noisy, thriving world of people and vehicles and emergency sirens. Since her father’s death two years ago, she found the crowds comforting. Each morning she walked out of her quiet apartment and reminded herself that she wasn’t alone, that there was a city filled with people surrounding her. She didn’t need more than that. She didn’t want more. She liked being free of the emotional entanglement relationships brought—the highs and lows, joys and heartbreaks. She’d lost her mother at fourteen years old, lost her ex-husband to another woman after three years of marriage. She’d lost her father to cancer, and she had no intention of losing anyone ever again. Being alone was fine. It was good. She was happy with her two-bedroom apartment and the silence she returned to after a long day of work. She had always felt safe and content in the life she had created.

And then he’d appeared.

First, just at the edge of her periphery—a quick glimpse that had made her blood run cold. The hooked nose, the hooded eyes, the stature that was just tall enough to make him stand out in a crowd. She’d told herself she was overtired, working too hard, thinking too much about the past. Martin Roker had died in a gun battle with the police eighteen years ago, shortly after he had murdered Sasha’s mother. He was not wandering the streets of New York City. He wasn’t stalking her. He wouldn’t jump out of her closet in the dead of night.

And yet she hadn’t been able to shake the anxiety that settled in the pit of her stomach.

She had seen him again a day later. Full-on face view of a man who should be dead. He’d been standing across the street from the small studio where she taped her show for the local-access cable station, WBKN. She’d walked outside at dusk, ready to return home after a few hours of working on her story. The one she was finally ready to tell: the tragedy of losing a family member to murder and the triumph that could come from it. Her mind had been in the past, her thoughts dwelling on those minutes and hours after she had learned of her mother’s death. She’d been looking at her phone, wondering if she should visit the police precinct to ask for the case file on her mother’s murder. When she looked up, he had been across the street.

And now…

Now she was afraid in a way she couldn’t remember ever being before. Afraid that she would see him again; worried that delving into past heartaches had unhinged her mind and made her vulnerable to imagining things that couldn’t possibly exist.

Like a dead man walking the streets.

She hitched her bag higher on her shoulder, determined to push the fear away. Martin Roker was dead. He had died eighteen years ago—a forty-year-old man who had forced the police to shoot him. He couldn’t possibly be stalking her. Even if he had lived, even if he had decided to hunt her down for some twisted reason, he wouldn’t still look like a forty-year-old man. He would have aged.

Her cell phone rang and she glanced down, dismissing the number as a solicitor’s. When she looked up again, the light had changed and the crowd was moving. She stepped off the curb, scanning the area, her heart jumping as she met cold blue eyes.

He was there! Right in her path, looking into her eyes as if he were daring her to come closer. Hooked nose. Blondish hair. Taller by a couple of inches than the people around him.

She turned away, heart in her throat, pulse racing. She glanced back, sure that he would be gone. He was crossing the street with long, determined strides, his cold gaze focused on Sasha. Hands deep in the pockets of his coat, shoulders squared, he moved through the crowd without breaking eye contact. Terrified, she ran back the way she had come, dodging the throng of people returning home after work. The studio was three blocks away. She’d go there and call for a cab, because she couldn’t call the police and say a dead man was stalking her.

Could she?

She glanced back again, hoping he had been a figment of her imagination and that maybe she was simply exhausted from too many nights thinking about the past and her mother’s murder.

He was still there! Moving quickly and gaining on her.

This was real!

He was real!

She ducked into a corner bakery, smiling at the man behind the counter as she ran to the display case and pretended to look at the pastries.

“Can I help you?” he asked.

“Just looking,” she murmured, her mouth dry with fear, the smile still pasted on her face. She knew how to fake happiness. She knew how to pretend everything was okay. She’d done it after her mother’s murder because she hadn’t wanted her father to worry. She’d done it after her ex-husband, Michael, had told her he was in love with another woman, packed his bags and walked out of their apartment. She’d put on her smiles and she had faked her happiness. She was ready to be more authentic. She wanted to be.

She wanted to tell her story and share her experiences. She wanted to hunt for the good in New York City’s crowded streets and boroughs and give people something to smile about.

Had her determination to do that caused the past to be resurrected?

Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt of The Forgotten Sister by Nicola Cornick

Author: Nicola Cornick
ISBN: 9781525809958
Publication Date: November 10, 2020
Publisher: Graydon House Books

1560: Amy Robsart is trapped in a loveless marriage to Robert Dudley, a member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Surrounded by enemies and with nowhere left to turn, Amy hatches a desperate scheme to escape—one with devastating consequences that will echo through the centuries…

Present Day: When Lizzie Kingdom is forced to withdraw from the public eye in a blaze of scandal, it seems her life is over. But she’s about to encounter a young man, Johnny Robsart, whose fate will interlace with hers in th most unexpected of ways. For Johnny is certain that Lizzie is linked to a terrible secret dating back to Tudor times. If Lizzie is brave enough to go in search of the truth, then what she discovers will change the course of their lives forever.

My thoughts:

The Forgotten Sister is told in dual timelines. In 1560, we follow Amy who is in a bad marriage with Robert Dudley. Robert is infatuated with the queen. All Amy wants is to escape her life. In the present day, we follow Lizzie who finds herself at the center of a scandal.

This ended up being a mixed bag for me. I liked Lizzie's timeline more than Amy's. I felt more invested in her. Amy came across as unlikable to me. I just didn't have much sympathy for her and felt like she made poor decisions. There is a paranormal element to the story. That was probably my favorite part of the book and I wish it was explored more. When the book ended, I just felt kind of indifferent. It wasn't a waste of time, but it isn't one I will remember for a long time. Give it a try. Maybe it will resonate more with you.

PROLOGUE

Amy Robsart, Cumnor Village

They came for me one night in the winter of 1752 when the ice was on the pond and the trees bowed under the weight of the hoar frost. There were nine priests out of Oxford, garbed all in white with tapers in hand. Some looked fearful, others burned with a righteous fervour because they thought they were doing the Lord’s work. All of them looked cold, huddled within their cassocks, the one out ahead gripping the golden crucifix as though it were all that stood between him and the devil himself.

The villagers came out to watch for a while, standing around in uneasy groups, their breath like smoke on the night air, then the lure of the warm alehouse called them back and they went eagerly, talking of uneasy ghosts and the folly of the holy men in thinking they could trap my spirit.

The hunt was long. I ran through the lost passageways of Cumnor Hall with the priests snapping at my heels and in the end, exhausted and vanquished, my ghost sank into the dark pool. They said their prayers over me and returned to their cloisters and believed the haunting to be at an end.

Yet an unquiet ghost is not so easily laid to rest. They had trapped my wandering spirit but I was not at peace. When the truth is concealed the pattern will repeat. The first victim was Amyas Latimer, the poor boy who fell to his death from the tower of the church where my body was buried. Then there was the little serving girl, Amethyst Green, who tumbled from the roof of Oakhangar Hall. Soon there will be another. If no one prevents it, I know there will be a fourth death and a fifth, and on into an endless future, the same pattern, yet different each time, a shifting magic lantern projecting the horror of that day centuries ago.

There is only one hope.

I sense her presence beside me through the dark. Each time it happens she is there too, in a different guise, like me. She is my nemesis, the arch-enemy. Yet she is the only one who can free me and break this curse. In the end it all depends on her and in freeing my spirit I sense she will also free her own.

Elizabeth.

I met her only a handful of times in my life. She was little but she was fierce, always, fierce enough to survive against the odds, a fighter, clever, ruthless, destined always to be alone. We could never have been friends yet we are locked together in this endless dance through time.

I possessed the one thing she wanted and could not have and in my dying I denied it to her forever. For a little while I thought that would be enough to satisfy me. Yet revenge sours and diminishes through the years. All I wish now is to be released from my pain and to ensure this can never happen again.

Elizabeth, my enemy, you are the only one who can help me now but to do that you must change, you must see that the truth needs to be told. Open your eyes. Find the light.

Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt of Fireside Love by S.L. Sterling

Author: S.L. Sterling
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Kristy
I hated my job. I had no social life.
Somehow I had become so predictable after my last relationship ended, that the cashier at the local food mart already had my favorite wine bagged and waiting for me behind the counter when I walked in on Friday afternoon.
I needed to get away, from everything.
So when my best friend, Addie, called up and offered me a FREE weekend getaway, how could I say no.
Promises of a quiet weekend with a good book, warm fires, and flannel pajamas? Yes, please!

Austin
It had been eighteen months.
Eighteen months, since I had lost my wife in a car accident and learned that our marriage had been nothing but one big lie.
I’d done nothing but work and mope around my sister’s house, so when she told me to take her cabin for the weekend. Time alone, surrounded by nature and the fresh cold mountain air was exactly what I’d been needing.
However, my plans of being alone in the wilderness quickly vanished when I walked through the doors of the cabin and found my sister’s best friend drunk and half-naked on the floor of the very same cabin.
I’d hidden my crush on her for years. Perhaps, not well enough. After all, Addie must have set this up.
The weekend was about to get a lot more interesting.

From USA Today Bestselling Author S.L. Sterling comes this friends to lovers romance that will warm your heart on a cold winters night.

Fireside Love is a stand alone friends to lovers story. It features Austin and Kristy. Kristy is Austin's Little sister's best friend.  They have grown up together.  Playing Cupid, Addie sends the couple to a weekend getaway.   I thought this was a cute story.  Their chemistry was pretty steamy.  There is some angst as both of them are dealing with broken hearts and learning how to trust and love again.  I loved how each of them realized they had always loved the other.  I won't spoil it for you.  It was really sweet.  I do recommend giving this one a shot.
