Throwback Thursday: Island of Flowers by Nora Roberts

Author: Nora Roberts
First published in 1982 by Silhouette

He would not believe her. When Laine Simmons comes to Hawaii for a reconciliation with her long-estranged father, she does not expect Dillon O'Brian, her father's handsome young business partner, to oppose her. But Dillon is convinced that Laine is responsible for the family misunderstanding. He is sure that Laine is only after her father's money. Now Laine must fight her growing attraction for this stern, loyal man. No matter how much she craves it, she knows that she can never find love with a man who mistrusts her.

To start, Island of Flowers was a DNF for me!  It's an early book by Ms. Roberts. I am so glad she has improved her story telling abilities and ideas over the years. After reading the first chapter, I have to wonder what kind of stories women in the 80s were into reading.  It really makes me appreciate how much romance has changed since then.

So, what bothered me so much about this book that it would be a DNF after 10%? Laine and Dillon just met and he is a grade A ass to her.  He assumes that she is only in Hawaii to get money out of her estranged father.  Then they are in the airplane on the way to her father's airport. Dillon puts it on auto-pilot, grabs Laine and forces her to kiss him.  Then he insults her about her lack of experience. The two have known each other for all of 20 minutes. Um..no.  Not the way to win a woman over.  I couldn't see my way past that scene enough to try to see Dillon redeem himself.  This is one that could definitely be skipped!
