According to Mayan tradition, if you whisper your troubles
to the Worry Dolls, they will do the worrying instead of you–therefore, it
follows that Worry Dolls are the keepers of a great many secrets . . .
On the eve of the end of the world–according to the Mayan
calendar–Mari Guarez Roselli’s secrets are being unraveled by her daughter, Lu.
Lu’s worry dolls are at-capacity as she tries to outrun the
ghosts from her past–including loved ones stolen on 9/11–by traveling through
her mother’s homeland of Guatemala, to discover the painful reasons behind her
own dysfunctional childhood, and why she must trust in the magic of the legend.
I was really intrigued by the idea of a worry doll and was eager to try this book out. Who wouldn't want to be able to have something help take our worries away. I may have to explore using them with my kids who constantly worry about things. I will admit to having a little trouble getting into the book at first, but was gradually drawn into this heartbreaking and bittersweet story of a mother and daughter.
Secrets of Worry Dolls is told through the eyes of Lu and her mother Mari. The unique part is that Mari is in a coma after a plane crashes in her neighborhood. The reader learns about Mari's past as Lu discovers her mother's secrets for herself in a trip to Guatemala. Through her discoveries, Lu begins to learn to let go and move past the grief and guilt over all of the loved ones she has lost. Mari story was just heart-breaking. While much of the book is a little grim, the ending left me with a sense of hope and peace.
This is the first book I have read from this author. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
