Enjoying the Adventure
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the
intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to
skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out,
and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a Ride!’” ― Hunter S. Thompson.
I love this quote by Mr. Thompson. But I change it up some
to fit my Christian worldview by saying “Life should not be a journey to
Heaven...” For many people outside of faith view a life following Christ as
boring and uneventful. But, I’m here to tell you Christ has an amazing
adventure waiting for each of us to enjoy. We just need to follow His lead and
example.
Many of the best adventures I experienced occurred on mission
trips. Going on a mission trip provides an amazing adventure with God. It is a
chance to feel deeply His presence and watch Him at work in the world. But when
we don’t GO, we are missing out on something special that God has planned just
for us. God wants to show us His world, and He wants us to help Him meet the
spiritual needs of our brothers and sisters all over His globe. Jesus wants us
to laugh and enjoy our time with Him.
I think we take ourselves too seriously sometimes and forget
to laugh along the path of life. Laughter and rejoicing are mentioned
throughout the Bible. And I love seeing Jesus laugh and enjoy time with His
disciples in the show “The Chosen.” God gave us laughter to lighten our
burdens. When our hearts feel light enough to laugh, we can easily rejoice
at all God has done for us.
Today, I want to share some of the lighter moments from my
mission journeys.
- Kissed
by a giraffe.
- Learned
to braid goat intestines.
- A
local tricked into watching them butcher a cow for dinner.
- Had a
baboon watch me as I went to the bathroom behind a rock.
- Petted
a real, live cheetah and survived it.
- Helped
construct a building using cow manure for plaster.
- Taught
an orphan how to get on an escalator.
- Learned
to call myself “Crazy White Person” in a tribal language.
- Bathed
in an outdoor shower while someone milked a cow in the stall next to me.
- Learned
how to “knock” on a door for a house constructed of plastic sheeting.
(FYI—you clap your hands loudly).
Want more adventures in life? Jesus has so much to offer if
we follow His leading and it will never be boring.
