Blog Tour: Excerpt from Death on Clare Island by Martha M. Geaney

Title: DEATH ON CLARE ISLAND (A Star O’Brien Mystery Book 1)

Author: Martha M. Geaney
Publisher: Turlough, Nolan Publishing
Pages: 232
Genre: Mystery

Star O’Brien is a haunting voice for the dead, the missing, and the lost.

Star O’Brien is a successful American information broker who can’t solve the mysteries of her own life. She comes to County Mayo, Ireland to settle her dead lover’s estate and look for her Irish mother who has been missing since Star was six years old. She is on the scene on Clare Island, when a body is discovered. It seems like a closed case involving the island’s dangerous cliffs and drug abuse. Star didn’t believe it when the police dismissed her mother’s disappearance as “abandonment” and she can’t believe the stories she is hearing about the dead young man.

Star must separate truth from fiction in the testimonies of those close to the victim including the head of an anti-drug foundation, a volatile ex-lover, a besotted young art student, and a restorer of the island’s ruins. Before long, Star’s investigation becomes the catalyst for a second murder, and she must work fast to avoid becoming the third victim. As she uncovers the truth about the murders, this fiercely independent, complex, female protagonist must also own up to her own past and a potential future with a charming new confidant.

Just a fifteen-minute boat ride from Roonagh on the west coast of Ireland, the towering mountain of Clare Island guards the entrance to the mouth of Clew Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. GrĂ¡inne Mhaol’s castle sits on the rocky headland at the island’s harbor. Most visitors come to view the scenery and the bottle-nose dolphins swimming in the bay. Others come to explore the archeological history, including the Cistercian Abbey where the 16th-century pirate queen is buried.
Matthew Sumner liked the five-hour walk around the island best of all: the danger of ignoring “Beware of Cliff Edges” signs that warned of falling to the rocky inlet below, the steep climb up Knockmore mountain, the view of Inisturk and Inisbofin islands from the peak, the small lakes, the potato lazybeds, and the Abbey Church. Oh, he would recommend any of the walks around Clare Island if pressed for an opinion. The shorter walks made more sense at the end of a day working in the Abbey ruins. Most of the time he selected the quickest route to the island’s harbor and hotel, where he ate his evening meal, saving the full circuit of the island for weekends. But he wanted the solitude and shadows provided by Knockmore for tonight’s excursion. He required the unobstructed view of the Atlantic Ocean.
As he made his way toward the southern side of the island, he took short strides, conserving his body movements to deflect attention. Zipping up his light jacket, he watched for small boats nearing the island, or for someone approaching him from the harbor. He was ready to slip on his stocking cap, making it difficult at a moment’s notice for anyone to identify him.
Keeping this last point foremost, he felt for the cap in his pocket. Perhaps, he thought, he should put it on now, picturing his bleached blonde shaggy hair acting as a kind of beacon. It had been a cold, dull day, and it looked like a devil of an evening. The menacing dark sky to the east foretold the storm headed for the island. He could see the whitecaps rising angrily out of the sea as they bashed onto the beach. He scanned the bog and the coastline while his fingers continued touching the cap like a monk fingering his beads.
Intuition told him he’d soon find what he sought, so he resolved to brave the wind and impending storm. It was then he spotted a lone figure, head hunched below the shoulders. His first thoughts wavered between fear and hope that tonight’s excursion would prove profitable. The person lifted a hand in salutation. Feeling a little puzzled by this, Matthew wondered why the individual he pursued would be friendly. He looked beyond the anonymous shape to the dark ocean. When he didn’t see a boat, he immediately relaxed, thinking this was an islander out for an evening walk. In the few moments it took for the person to shorten the space between them, he heard his name whispered in the wind.
“Matthew, what are you doing out in this nasty weather?”
The voice, dull and sleepy, floated in the air between them like the hypnotic sounds of the sea. Loose, black clothing draped the person’s frame, making it impossible for Matthew to discern whether it was a man or woman. His steps slowed. For in that moment, straining for a closer look, he understood too late that he had made a grave mistake. His final thoughts were of how much he wanted to live as the water choked off his breath. Then the darkness took him.

Review: Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

Author: Kerri  Maniscalco
Publisher: JIMMY Patterson
Date of Publication: Setpember 2018

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.

But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?

Escaping from Houdini is the third book featuring forensic scientists in training, Audrey Rose and Thomas.  The story takes place about 2 days after the events of the second book.  This time around, we find our couple on a ship bound for America.  The ship has a "carnival" themed nightly show for the duration of the voyage.  When there is a murder on opening night, Audrey Rose and Thomas get pulled in to investigate.

While not my favorite of the three, I did enjoy this installation.  The thought the mystery was really good and I didn't figure out the killer's identity.  The characters from the traveling show were fun and mysterious.  We even get to spend some time with the not yet famous Harry Houdini.  As in the first book, the events in this one aren't  really historically accurate, but I didn't mind.   I also loved the ending.

There is one aspect of the book that made me lower my rating of it, however.  Audrey Rose has to go undercover, in a manner of speaking, to help solve the case.  I don't want to spoil things, but she acts in a way toward the Ringmaster that I didn't agree with.  The author did put an explanation in her notes at the end of the book, but I just didn't care for it.  It seemed out of character for her.  I was disappointed that the author chose to go in that direction.

Despite that, this is a fun YA series that I highly recommend.  I can't wait to see what is next for Thomas and Audrey Rose!

With my mood dampening and all the lovebirds pairing off, I can’t think of a better excuse to get out of here. Clapping Jake on the back, I say my goodbyes and thank the guys for letting me hang with them tonight before taking my sullen ass back to my apartment.

It takes all of my restraint, not to check on Liv when I get back on the fifth floor. It would be so easy to knock on her door and tell her that I’m in love with her. That I’ve loved her for a long time. In my mind, I know it’s no use. My heart doesn’t want to listen.

I pause outside her door and touch a hand to the cold surface like it will somehow connect me to the woman inside.

“Whoa. Dude. What are you doing?” I hear the elevator ding, and Harley’s voice startles me.

“Nothing,” I shake my head and step back.

“Yeah, nothing,” he steps up beside me and shoves me toward our apartment. “Let’s go before you do something stupid.”

I huff. “Like telling her, I love her?”

“Jesus Christ, how much have you had to drink?” He questions.

“Not enough. That’s for sure.”

Harley opens the apartment door, ushering me inside. “I’m going to disagree with you. Drinking isn’t going to solve anything either.”

“Harley, it was six beers. I’m hardly drunk. Just delusional.”

“You might be right, there.” He grabs two bottles of water from the fridge and tosses me one. “When are you going to give up on her, man? Haven’t you had enough rejection?”

“Would you give up on the woman you love?”

Harley looks at me as if I’ve grown two heads. “If she treated me like shit? Pushed me away and said I made her miserable? Uh, yeah. I did; remember?”

I wince. He’s right. And I’m an asshole friend for bringing it up. “Shelia is nothing like Olivia.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. But a man has got to know when to cut his losses. Trust me.”

“It’ll be better when I finish this job and get the hell away from here. Though I feel bad leaving you without a roommate.”

Blog Tour: Review of Brief Chronicle of Another Stupid Heartbreak by Adi Alsaid

Author: Adi Alsaid

Publisher: Inkyard Press
Publication Date: April 30, 2019

Has heartbreak broken her for good?

Dumped by her boyfriend the summer after senior year, teen love and relationship columnist Lu Charles has hit a wall with her writing. The words just won’t come to her like they used to and if she doesn’t find a topic for her column, she’ll lose her gig at hip online magazine Misnomer, and the college scholarship that goes along with it.

Her best friend, Pete, thinks she should write through her own pain, but when Lu overhears another couple planning a precollege breakup just like hers, she becomes convinced that they’re the answer to cracking her writer’s block. And when she meets them—super-practical Iris and cute, sweet Cal—and discovers they’re postponing their breakup until the end of the summer, she has to know more.
Have Cal and Iris prolonged their own misery by staying together, knowing the end is in sight? Or does the secret to figuring out all this love business—and getting over it—lie with them? One thing is certain—if Lu can’t make a breakthrough before summer is over, she can kiss her future goodbye.
From the acclaimed author of Let’s Get Lost and North of Happy comes a touching exploration of love, relationships and the pain of breaking up.

I'll start right off by saying I am definitely not the target audience for this book.  Usually, I love YA books, even YA romance.  However, I had a hard time relating as an adult to the angst that Lu is going through in the story.  There were times when it brought me back to my first big breakup.  But didn't make me nostalgic enough to love the book.  I did like the characters and their relationships Pete was a rbeath of fresh air and I liked his no-nonsense way with Lu.  I didn't like Lu's eavesdropping tendency.  I thought that was a little weird and stalkerish.  I think given the right audience, this book will do well. It is well written. I'm just ultimately not the right one for it.

2 in1: Hard Sell & Huge Deal by Lauren Layne

Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Date of publication: September 2018

Twenty-eight and filthy rich, Matt Cannon is the youngest broker on Wall Street. He may be a “boy wonder,” but he’s every inch a man. Ask any woman—any night. But when Matt’s latest fling makes scandalous headlines, his clients get anxious, and his bosses at Wolfe Investments level an ultimatum: keep his assets zipped, get a “real” girlfriend, and clean up his act. Only one woman can help Matt with something this hard.
For PR genius Sabrina Cross, the best fixer in Manhattan, playing Matt’s steady is going to be a challenge, even if it’s just for show. They already have an explosive history, she can’t stand the cocky party boy, and worse—she can’t stop thinking about him. So who’ll dare to break her “no touching” rule first? Because when that happens, Matt and Sabrina’s game of let’s pretend will get so hot it could set both their reputations on fire.

Hard Sell is probably my favorite out of the 21 Wall Street trilogy.  I love frenemies to lovers stories and Matt and Sabrina made for a fun story.   Of course, their animosity started with a complete misunderstanding.  Because no one ever talks about anything and they just make assumptions.  Anyway, I loved these two.  Matt's family situation was interesting to say the least and I could see how it helped shape who he was. Sabrina was a strong and fun take charge female character.  I would to have her on my side! These can be read as stand alones. so I would recommend this one the most out of the three.

Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Date of publication: February 2019

An alpha among the wolves of Wall Street, Kennedy Dawson rose to the top of the pack by striking the right contracts at the right times. But there’s one deal that’s been giving him a run for his money—a pact to never again let his assistant, Kate, get under his skin. She may be smart, gorgeous, and sharp as a whip, but she’s definitely off-limits.

Kate Henley isn’t a banker, but she knows a thing or two about risk management—specifically, about managing her attraction to her smolderingly sexy boss. She already fell once, and Kennedy showed no sign of paying a return on her investment. So when Kennedy’s brother starts pursuing her, Kate figures she has the best of both worlds. Jack is charming, rich, very attentive, and the spitting image of his older brother.

It’s also making Kennedy think twice. But to win Kate’s heart, he’ll have to broker the deal of a lifetime…and prove he’s worth the risk.

Huge Deal was sadly the least favorite of mine out of the trilogy.  I really wanted to love this one, because this couple was hinted at since the beginning of the series.  I just ended up being OK for me.  I think where the book went wrong was the amount of time it took for Kate and Kennedy to finally hook up.  I never felt like Kennedy genuinely fell for Kate.  He only did it because the author wanted him to fall for her.  It just wasn't convincing enough for me.  I honestly liked Kate with Kennedy's brother more.  They had more chemistry from the beginning.  It's not a bad read.  It still had a cute ending.  I just wanted more chemistry.

Overall. this is a cute and fun trilogy and I definitely recommend it.  You can read my review of the first one, Hot Asset here.

Review: Finale by Stephanie Garber

Author: Stephanie Garber
Publisher: Flatiorn Books
Date of publication: May 2019

A love worth fighting for. A dream worth dying for. An ending worth waiting for.

It’s been two months since the Fates were freed from a deck of cards, two months since Legend claimed the throne for his own, and two months since Tella discovered the boy she fell in love with doesn’t really exist.

With lives, empires, and hearts hanging in the balance, Tella must decide if she’s going to trust Legend or a former enemy. After uncovering a secret that upends her life, Scarlett will need to do the impossible. And Legend has a choice to make that will forever change and define him.

Caraval is over, but perhaps the greatest game of all has begun. There are no spectators this time: only those who will win, and those who will lose everything.

Welcome, welcome to Finale. All games must come to an end…

Finale was one of my most anticipated reads for 2019.  I have enjoyed this trilogy since the beginning, so I had high hopes that the series would conclude in a big way.  This one takes place about 2 months after the events of Legendary.  The Fates have been released from their deck of cards and Legend's throne is in jeopardy.

This year is not turning out well for me and my anticipated reads.  I wish I could say that I loved this conclusion.  It was just OK and, honestly, the weakest of the trilogy.  Literally, nothing happens except toward the end.  The majority of the book is Tella whining about how Legend will never love her and trying to decide if she should be with Jack of Hearts instead.  It was the dumbest love triangle because you know who she is going to end up with.  At least Scarlett's love triangle (yes, there is a second one) doesn't drag on too long into the book.

There were a couple of twists but nothing ultra shocking or exciting. The one thing I did like was how Scarlett saved the kingdom.  That plot line was pretty cool.  The ending was neat and tidy and underwhelming.  I wouldn't necessarily skip this if you have read the first two.  I mean, it's no horrible.  It was just not what I was hoping for,

Blog Tour: The Shadow Writer by Eliza Maxwell

Author:Eliza Maxwell
Publisher: Lake Union Publishing
Date of publication: May 2019

Every writer has a story. Some are deadlier than others.
Aspiring author Graye Templeton will do anything to escape the horrific childhood crime that haunts her. After a life lived in shadows, she’s accepted a new job as protĂ©gĂ© to Laura West, influential book blogger and wife of an acclaimed novelist. Laura’s connections could make Graye’s publishing dreams a reality. But there’s more to Laura than meets the eye.
Behind the veneer of a charmed life, Laura’s marriage is collapsing. Her once-lauded husband is descending into alcoholism and ruin and bringing Laura nearer to the edge.
As the two women form a bond that seems meant to be, long-buried secrets claw their way into the present, and the line between friendship and obsession begins to blur, forcing each to decide where her loyalties lie. Running from the past is a dangerous game, and the loser could end up dead.

I loved The Widow's Watcher (my review), so I had really high hope for The Shadow Writer.  That is kind of the down side of loving a book by an author.  You end up having high expectations for the next book that you read by them.  I wish I could say I loved this one as well.  It ended up being OK for me.  I feel like the plot had a good backbone, but the body just didn't fill out the way it could have. It just felt very unbalanced to me.

The first 60% of the book, nothing happens.  The Time lines were jumpy and I had to re-read parts to figure out if I missed something.  I didn't feel like I got to know the characters very well, so by the end, I wasn't really invested in them.  The last 35ish% was the best part of the book.  There were twists and a couple of surprises.  I did call the big one in the end.  I just wish the rest of the book had me as on the edge of my seat as the last 35%.  I know that I won't love everything by an author, so I'm not giving up on this one.  It is a fairly quick book to read, so I would recommend trying it out.

Review: The Invited by Jennifer McMahon

Author: Jennifer McMahon
Publisher: Double Day
Date of publication: April 2019

In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate abandon the comforts of suburbia and their teaching jobs to take up residence on forty-four acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams. When they discover that this charming property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago. As Helen starts carefully sourcing decorative building materials for her home--wooden beams, mantles, historic bricks--she starts to unearth, and literally conjure, the tragic lives of Hattie's descendants, three generations of "Breckenridge women," each of whom died amidst suspicion, and who seem to still be seeking something precious and elusive in the present day.

I love a good ghost story and had high hopes for The Invited.  I loved the twist of building a haunted house instead of moving into one.  Unfortunately, the book ended up being a so-so read for me.  The book involves Helen and Nate who give up their teaching careers in the city and buy land in Vermont.  They want to build their dream home and live off the land.  What they didn't bargain for was the land coming with a ghost or two.

I'm not really sure I would classify this as a ghost story.  It wasn't creepy or scary in the slightest.  I mean there was a ghost, kind of, but it didn't give me the chills I wanted. The story is told through duel perspectives of Helen and Olive, a girl who lives in the town.  I think it was the duel perspective that kind of ruined the book for me.  I was able to figure out the twist really early on and you will too if you pay close attention. The book could have been shorter.   I got a bit bored with the mundane details about the house they were building.  But, I did follow through to the end and was correct in all of my guesses about what really happened.

It's not a bad read, it just wasn't what I was hoping for.  Give it a shot, just don't go into it thinking you will be too scared to read it late at night.  You won't.

Pre-Order Blitz: Excerpt from Little Girls Sleeping by Jennifer Chase

Author: Jennifer Chase
Publisher: Bookouture
Pages: 377
Genre: Thriller/Crime

He looked down at the little girl, sleeping peacefully, her arms wrapped around a teddy bear. He knew he was the only one who could save her. He could let her sleep forever.

An eight-year-old girl, Chelsea Compton, is missing in Pine Valley, California and for Detective Katie Scott it’s a cruel reminder of the friend who disappeared from summer camp twenty years ago. Unable to shake the memories, Katie vows she won’t rest until she discovers what happened to Chelsea.

But as Katie starts to investigate, the case reveals itself to be much bigger and more shocking than she feared. Hidden deep in the forest she unearths a makeshift cemetery: a row of graves, each with a brightly coloured teddy bear.

Katie links the graves to a stack of missing-persons cases involving young girls—finding a pattern no one else has managed to see. Someone in Pine Valley has been taking the town’s daughters for years, and Katie is the only one who can stop them.

And then another little girl goes missing, snatched from the park near her home.

Katie’s still haunted by the friend she failed to protect, and she’ll do anything to stop the killer striking again—but can she find the little girl before it’s too late?

Compulsive and gripping crime fiction for fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh. Katie Scott’s first case will have you on the edge of your seat and gasping with shock.

Book Excerpt:
Prologue
The oversized tires obliterated the rural roadway before the large truck came to an abrupt stop. The driver stalled the engine. Dust rose in a curious flowering cloud, swirling in front of the vehicle’s hood and creeping toward the back of the camper shell. When the surrounding vicinity finally cleared, a dense forest landscape emerged.
The truck overlooked the sheer cliff and rugged scenery that had become a permanent roadblock. The usual silence of the deserted region was interrupted by the incessant and rhythmic sound of a cooling engine.
Tick… Tick… Tick…
The vehicle remained parked. No one moved inside the cab or got out. The truck stayed immobile as if an unlikely statue in the vast wilderness—a distinct contrast between nature and manufactured steel.
The truck sat at the ideal vantage spot, which was both mesmerizing and terrifying for any spectator; but still the occupant chose to wait. The intense high beams pierced ahead into the picturesque hills, leaving a hazy view of the area above the massed trees.
When the driver’s door finally opened, a man stepped out, his steel-toed leather work boots hitting the dirt. They were well-worn, reflecting the many miles he had walked and the many hours he had labored. Swiftly the door shut as the man, medium build and wearing only a plain dark T-shirt, walked to the back of the truck and, with a loud bang, released the lift gate. He moved with purpose and with a calm assertiveness, as if he had performed this particular task many times before. His weathered hands, calloused from years of working with heavy tools and machinery without the protection of leather gloves, had a certain agility and speed.
He grasped two well-used shovels, a large arching pick, and a bulky utility garbage bag. As he tossed the bag onto the ground, the top burst open and several medium-sized teddy bears spilled out. Their smiling faces accentuated the brightly colored ribbons tied around their necks, contrasting with the muted shades of their surroundings.
The man pushed the floppy bag aside with the toe of his boot. He worked in quiet solitude, no humming, no whistling, and no talk.
He flipped on the flashlight fixed to his baseball cap. Straight ahead and slightly arced, the large beam illuminated his path while he strode steadily toward a particular wooded area.
The surrounding thickets and trees remained still without any wind to rustle the leaves. The only audible sound was the man’s quick footsteps—never with any hesitation. He walked with the gait of a young man, despite his stature of someone older.
He hesitated as if he had forgotten something, standing motionless with his arms down at his sides and his head hung forward as he shone the bright light at the ground and the tops of his boots. He still held firmly to the tools. He mumbled a few inaudible sentences of a memorized prayer, which sounded more like a warning than a passage from the Bible, then he raised his head and continued to walk into the dense forest.
Dropping his tools, he carefully pushed a pine branch aside and secured it with a worn piece of rope that had been left for the purpose. An opening was exposed—a tunnel barely large enough for a man to enter.
He grabbed his digging tools once again and proceeded. The flashlight on the front of his cap brightened the passageway as it veered to the right. He followed, only ducking his head twice before the path opened to an area with several boulders sticking out of the cliff. Clusters of unusual rock shapes, some sharp, some rounded, made the terrain appear more like a movie set or backdrop.
A narrow dirt path of crude, sloping man-made steps dropped fifteen feet to a landing jutting out from the rock formation. A small yellow flag was stuck into the earth, marking a spot. A slight evening breeze picked up, causing the flag to flutter.
The man balanced the shovels and pick against the hillside and pulled a hunting knife from a sheath attached to his belt. Pressing the bone handle tight against his palm, he drew the blade through the packed dirt to mark a rectangular pattern on the ground.
He stared intently at the soil, then retrieved the pick, gripping it tight, and swung it hard against the dry, heavily compacted earth. It dented the surface, spewing chips of dirt in every direction. A few small rocks buried in the soil since the beginning of time hampered his progress, but after several more arced swings, the ground began to crumble, exposing the fresh earth.
The heavy pick was exchanged for one of the shovels. Soon there was a small pile of California soil, comprised of sand, silt, clay, and small rock. The repeated movements of dig, scoop, and deposit continued for more than forty-five minutes at a brisk pace. The hard work of manual labor didn’t deter him. It only made him more determined to create a work of genius—his ultimate masterpiece.
At last he stepped back and admired his handiwork, perspiring heavily through his shirt from the effort. Exhilaration filled his body, keeping his muscles flexed and his heart pumping hard. He leaned against the shovel, a smile forming on his lips as he waited for his pulse to return to normal, and marveled at the unmistakable outline of a freshly dug grave.
