Spotlight: The Love Letter by Rachel Hauck

Author: Rachel Hauck
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Date of publication: June 2018

Romance has never been actress Chloe Daschle’s forte—in life or on screen. But everyone knows who to call for a convincing death scene . . . and it might be killing her career.

When Chloe is given a peek at the script for an epic love story, she decides to take her destiny into her own hands and request an audition for the lead female role, Esther Kingsley. The compelling tale, inspired by family lore and a one-page letter from the colonial ancestor of scriptwriter Jesse Gates, just might break her out of this career-crippling rut. Jesse would rather write about romance than live through it after his past relationship ended in disaster. But once on-set together, the chemistry between Jesse and his leading lady is hard to deny.

Centuries earlier, in the heart of the Revolutionary War, Hamilton Lightfoot and Esther Longfellow wrote their saga off the silver screen. Esther’s Loyalist father opposes any relationship with Hamilton, but Esther must face her beloved father’s disapproval and the dangers of war in order to convince Hamilton of their future together. Hamilton has loved Esther for years, and on the eve of battle pens the love letter she’s always wanted—something straight from the heart.

Set in stunning upcountry South Carolina, The Love Letter is a beautifully-crafted story of the courage it takes to face down fear and chase after love, even in the darkest of times. And just maybe, all these generations later, love can come home in a way not even Hollywood could imagine.

Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt of Billionaire Auction by Debbie White

NEW RELEASE….
When a single independent woman falls for a single dad, she has to decide if she’s willing to accept the whole package.

Jennifer Palmer is not especially excited about attending the charity event, but because it helps homeless animals and because her best friend and roommate asked her to, she agrees to attend. Besides, it might be sort of fun bidding on an eligible billionaire and just what Jenny needs to move forward after the break up with her loser boyfriend, Brad.

Single dad, Chase Marlow is well-known in the community for his work with disadvantaged women and children. He also loves animals, so when he’s asked to be one of the auctioned billionaires, he steps up to the challenge.

Jenny isn’t planning on bidding, but when Chase enters the stage, all bets are off. After all, it’s just one date.

Can Jenny and Chase get that one date off the ground, or will there be too many obstacles in their way?

My thoughts:

In Billionaire Auction, Jenny doesn't know she will meet her future when she agrees to attend an auction to benefit the local animal shelter that she volunteers at.  Chase is wary about dating, but can't resist getting to know the woman who won her bidding war on him.

This was really an OK romance for me as I liked it but I didn't love it.  I loved Chase.  He wore his heart on his sleeve. But I had a hard time warming up to Jenny.  She ran hot and cold throughout most of the book. She often over reacted to things Chase did and said. Because of that, I had a hard time buying their fall into love.  I just didn't feel it or trust that she wouldn't always fall back into that habit.  It is a clean romance, so if you like those types of romances you might want to give this one a try.  It's not a bad story, it just wasn't exactly what I was hoping for.

"A wonderful family love story that was very well written with enough creative descriptions to make the reader feel as though they were actually in the setting. Debbie White’s books are very well written, family friendly, and always an easy read."

July Mini Musings

Lies We Tell Our kids:   I found this book mildly amusing...very, very mild.  The author has taken little white lies that we make up for our kids and illustrated them.  I will admit that there were some I had never heard of, so they must be things the author has told his kids.  I'm not sure I would recommend running out and buying this one, but it might be something to pass the time while waiting for in a doctor's waiting room.

Neverworld Wake: This was written by the same author as Night Field.  I didn't much care for that one, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much  I enjoyed this book.  It's a unique take on Groundhog Day. I actually liked all of the teen characters, especially the narrator.. The mystery was engaging and kept me guessing until the end.  I definitely recommend this one.

A is for Asteroid, Z is for Zombies:  This is definitely not a book for kids.  It's pretty morbid and will probably be too much for little kids to handle. It highlights some real and some not so real fears with well drawn illustrations and cute poems.  I enjoyed reading this one.

Books We Didn't Finish - July edition

Witch's Kiss: This had great promise with the reversed Sleeping Beauty plot.  But it was really dull with unlikable characters.  The backstory (fairy tale) part was OK, but not enough to keep my interest to see how it all ended.  Finding out it was the first in a trilogy made me give up. I knew I wouldn't finish out the series, so gave up about 60% in.

The Doll Funeral:  I found this book really confusing and disjointed.  I had really no idea what was going on through most of the parts I read.  The child abuse scenes were uncomfortable and made me put the book down. It wasn't what I was expecting.

Baby Teeth:  I was so excited to read this book.  I was sent an ARC from the publisher and with all of the hype leading up to the release date, I was hoping for something truly thrilling.  I ended up stopping at about 40%.  I hated the characters.  I got tired of the gas lighting by Hannah.  Tired of Alex not believing that Hannah is horrible to Suzette when he's not around.  I didn't realize that Hannah was only 7 years old when I read the synopsis.  Gifted or not, she was too young to believe she was a psychopath and wanted to kill her mother.  Especially since she suffered no abuse from her parents.  There are a lot of mixed reviews for this debut.  I fall on the "no thanks" side.

Blog Tour: The Immortal Gene by Jonas Saul

Author: Jonas Saul
Publisher: Vesuvian Books
Date of publication: July 2018

PLAYING GOD HAS CONSEQUENCES.

Jake Wood has it made. He is a tough homicide detective with a partner who’s like a brother, and he’s about to marry the girl of his dreams.

Then Jake learns a close friend is missing and travels to South America in search of him. After a freak accident in the Amazon Rainforest, Jake wakes up in the hospital—eighteen months later. Long presumed dead, he discovers his fiancée is married and pregnant, his house was sold, his job is gone, and his partner transferred to another city to become lead detective on a serial killer case.

Jake buys a cabin in the woods and tries to leave the world behind, until his home is broken into and he discovers he was targeted—but why? When Jake’s former partner requests his aid in catching the Blood Eagle Killer, he offers to help find whoever is behind Jake’s recent trouble.

This leads to Fortech Industries, a pharmaceutical company secretly researching a way to create an immortal gene. Now they intend to destroy their only error—Jake Wood—who has become  something more than human.

I really wanted to love The Immortal Gene.  The premise of the book is really cool.  Unfortunately for me, the execution wasn't what I was hoping for.  My biggest issue with the book was I wasn't sure what it was trying to be.  Was it a serial killer murder mystery or a sci fi book?  The two story-lines didn't gel well.  Because of this, the sci-fi part of the book was not fully fleshed out.  I was left with so many questions and was kind of confused about what happened to Jake. Why was his friend Luke in South America? How did the "immortal" gene play into it?  Why was everyone so calm when they found out about Jake's transformation? Because that would freak me out! It felt like I was missing some big chunks of information.  The book does end in a cliff hanger, so maybe in the next book more things will be cleared up.

I liked Jake's character and he is someone I would be interested in reading about in the future. I hope he can figure out more about his condition and how to deal with it. I haven't read anything else by this author.  I'll probably pick up the next book just to see what happens to Jake.

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

Author: Jennifer Hillier
Publisher: Minotaur Books
Date of publication: June 2018

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who's been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

I had to think about this book for a little while before figuring out what to say about it.  While Jar of Hearts is an interesting and engaging mystery, it is also kind of disturbing.  The book begins with the arrest and conviction of Georgina "Geo" for aiding her then boyfriend, Calvin in the the murder and concealment of her best friend Angela 14 years earlier.   Kaiser, who was also close friend of the girls, is now a cop and arrests Geo and Calvin.  5 years later, the bodies of women start showing dead and they may be connected to Geo and Calvin.

Given some of the content in the book, I feel a little uncomfortable saying I "enjoyed" the story.  I liked it, but I didn't love it. I was engaged from the beginning and wanted to keep reading to find out what really happened.   There were some surprises and twists.  One of the twists, I figured out about 3/4 of the way through.  Anyone paying attention would be able to as well.  I also was satisfied with the ending.

The story is told through the eyes of Geo and Kaiser.  We get flashbacks that slowly reveal what happened to Angela and how everything went so wrong.  I will admit, for me, the characters were all pretty unlikable.  Even once I found out why Geo was involved, I still didn't like her very much.  All she ever had were excuses.  Kaiser was a cop but he wasn't that much of a hero and not someone I would respect very much.  I guess it is possible to like a book even if the characters are slimy.

I would recommend the book.  The mystery is good and progressed at a nice even pace.  There are some uncomfortable scenes of rape/almost rape in the book, so that could potentially be a trigger for some readers.

Cooper's Charm by Lori Foster

Author: Lori Foster
Publisher: Harlequin
Date of publication: July 31, 2018

Before the burglary that shattered her confidence, Phoenix Rose had a fiancé, a successful store and a busy, happy existence. After months spent adrift, she takes a job at the lakeside resort of Cooper’s Charm. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, friendly colleagues and a charismatic, widowed boss, Phoenix is slowly inching her way back into the world.

Visiting Cooper’s Charm to check up on her little sister, Ridley Rose impulsively agrees to fill in as housekeeper. Still reeling from an ego-bruising divorce, she finds satisfaction in a job well done—and in the attention of the resort’s handsome scuba instructor.

For Phoenix and Ridley, Cooper’s Charm is supposed to be merely temporary. But this detour may lead to the place they most need to be, where the future is as satisfying as it is surprising…

Cooper's Charm is the first in a new contemporary romance series about a lakeside camping resort where anyone lucky enough can find a second chance.  In this first one, Phoenix and her sister Ridley aren't looking for love, but they are looking for a place to start over and heal from their wounds.  Cooper's Charm just might be the place to make it happen.

I loved this story.  The characters were fun and likable.  Cooper and Phoenix's relationship was so much fun to watch develop.  It was a slow and super sweet.  They were well matched and just what the other needed to move on. I loved Phoenix.  She was a character I was rooting for to find her way back to her old self. They were my favorite of the two couples.  I did like Ridley and Baxter together.  However, I felt like they were a bit hot and cold for most of the story, so their love declarations were a bit unexpected for me.

Aside from the romances, Phoenix and Ridley's sisterly bond was a joy to experience.  They had a fierce loyalty to one another.  They also had really fun banter that made me laugh.  The other characters in the story gave the resort a feeling of home.  It sounds like a place I would want to visit.  The story also includes a little mystery to satisfy those suspense lovers out there.  I highly recommend this one!  It comes out next week.  It will make a great book to read over the summer.  I can't wait to see whose story is next.  Maris maybe?

Chills by Mary Sangiovanni

Author:  Mary Sangiovanni
Publisher: Lyrical Underground (Kensington)
Date of publication: September 2016

It begins with a freak snowstorm in May. Hit hardest is the rural town of Colby, Connecticut. Schools and businesses are closed, powerlines are down, and police detective Jack Glazier has found a body in the snow. It appears to be the victim of a bizarre ritual murder. It won't be the last. As the snow piles up, so do the sacrifices. Cut off from the rest of the world, Glazier teams up with an occult crime specialist to uncover a secret society hiding in their midst.

The gods they worship are unthinkable. The powers they summon are unstoppable. And the things they will do to the good people of Colby are utterly, horribly unspeakable…

I have to admit that I started this book 3 times before I finally got past the first chapter.  I am glad that I gave it more than one chance.  Chills ended up being a fairly enjoyable horror novel.  I was pleasantly surprised.  In the story, it's almost June and the small town of Colby, CT is having a massive blizzard.  A body is found that has cult symbols carved into it.  People start seeing things dangerous in the snow. A small police task force has to find out what is going on before it's too late.

I have read some comments that this book reminded some readers of something they would see on the SciFy channel.  I have to agree with them.  It's like a guilty pleasure b-horror movie.  Once you get past the first chapter, the book takes off and becomes very fast paced.  It's creepy and is definitely kind of gruesome. I enjoyed the pacing and the way the background information was parsed out.  There were no huge info dumps to slow things down.

I liked all of the main characters from the police task force, especially Kathy and Teagan. There was some nice relationship possibilities between the two. I'll admit I was happy that the author decided not to add in the trope of a sex scene in the middle of chaos.  So often that happens and I can't understand who in their right mind would take the time to have sex when there is imminent danger around.   Along with them, there are other characters introduced along the way.  You never know who will be safe and who won't survive.  I'm not going to talk plot really, because I don't want to give away any spoilers.  The twist toward the end was a nice surprise.

If you are in the mood for a fun horror book, I do recommend this one. There is another book featuring Kathy coming out next month.  I'm looking forward to reading Behind the Door.

Review & Excerpt of Fight For You by Nina Crespo

Author: Nina Crespo
Publisher: Pocket Star
Date of publicaiton: July 2018

In this second of the Kingman Brothers series, Aiden Kingman is reunited with the woman he mistakenly wronged seven years ago...and this time around, he’s determined to make things right.

Seven years ago, Aiden Kingman had to choose between betraying Delanie Clark and her father or staying loyal to his father’s company. He chose his father—losing Delanie in the process—and he’s regretted it ever since. Now as CEO and partner in Kingman Partners International, he needs to finalize buying a retreat property, but there’s one major hold up: Delanie is the contract negotiator for the owner, and she doesn’t trust him.

Delanie and her father lost everything when Aiden’s father lied about his intentions for buying her family’s mountain retreat. She swore that she would never have anything to do with Aiden Kingman again. But now she’s facing him across the negotiating table, and sparks that had previously been stamped out reignite between them. When tragedy places the deal on the line, will they put their history behind them? Or will the deal cost them both their second chance at love?

Fight for You is the second book in the Kingman Brothers series.  This is Aiden's story.  Aiden finds out he will be negotiating with Delanie on a business deal.  Delanie is the girl who got away.  Delanie is not happy to see Aiden.  She thinks he betrayed her years before and wants to deny that her feelings for him are still there.

For the most part, I enjoyed this one.  I didn't like it as much as the first book.  The main reason was Delanie.  I really never warmed up to her character.  I'm the type of person who likes to communicate, especially when I have an issue with someone who I think betrayed my trust.  Delanie was never really interested in listening to Aiden and I found that incredibly frustrating.  She even pulled it toward the end.  I can't imagine she is someone who would let go of that habit that quickly.  What saved the book for me was Aiden.  I really liked him and was rooting for him to get what he wanted in all aspects of his life.  His ending was very satisfying.

This is a pretty quick read.  It works well as a stand alone, but the first one, Forget You, is worth trying out as well.

Read the an exclusive excerpt from FIGHT FOR YOU:

Delanie pulled the sheet over her head as she lay in bed. She’d take anything to get rid of Aiden—a surprise zit on her nose, the tequila hangover of death, eighteen bad hair days—it would all be worth it just to get some peace.
The medicine the doctor had prescribed made her sleepy, but every time she woke up, Aiden was there, giving her water, handing her more pills, or hovering just outside the bedroom, waiting for her to come out of the bathroom and get back into bed.
But even in a drugged haze, she couldn’t ignore the obvious about him. Yesterday, he’d brought her lunch after he’d gone for a run. The black running tights and matching long-sleeved workout shirt he’d worn had molded to his torso and legs. He’d smelled like sweat—the good kind that made her want to run her hands all over him and grab his solid-looking ass.
Delanie glanced at the digital clock on the bedside table. He was usually in her room by eight thirty sharp, reminding her not to exert herself and stay in bed. It was almost nine. Was Aiden still working out? This was her chance to take an extra-long shower without him banging on the door, checking on her. Just as she swept back the covers, he walked in the bedroom, shirtless, carrying a breakfast tray.
“Good morning. Sorry, I overslept.” Heavy lids emphasized his hazel eyes. A morning beard framed the angles of his face. Black sweat pants rode low on his hips. As he leaned down to place the tray of food on her lap, warmth radiated from him, along with the faint scent of his spicy cologne.
No one wore just-woke-up sexy like he did. When they were together, snuggling had been her favorite thing to do with him in bed. Okay, maybe her second favorite.
He stood and rested a hand on his hip. From the shape of his cock, that bad boy was roaming free. “How are you feeling?”
Feverish and in need of an orgasm—stat.

“Better.”
“Good.” He gave her a lopsided grin. “If you need me, I’ll be in the shower in the spare bathroom.”
A memory she couldn’t stop roared in. Aiden in the shower at Clearmount. Head thrown back, with soap suds gliding down his shoulders, winding through the muscles of his torso and down his muscular legs as water sluiced over him.
“Delanie?”
Aiden calling her snapped Delanie partially back to the present. She had to blink several times to erase the conjured up image of him standing naked in the bedroom doorway. “Yes?”
He pointed to the bottle of pills on the nightstand. “Don’t forget to take your medicine.”

Octavia stepped into the main lobby of the Pennsylvania Medical Center for her night shift. Even before she’d arrived at work, everything had felt surreal. The evening breeze whispered promises, advising her of changes ahead. It felt as if a force were pulling her forward, and she had no choice but to oblige. She could not help but explore the sensation beckoning her. For the first time in her twenty-eight years, this journey felt like the right path, a path she’d chosen, a path that filled her heart with unexpected wonder.
It was her first night after a month of training on days. She looked forward to working as a pediatric nurse, her favorite unit. She remembered vividly being that scared child no one had understood — the child who had received so many stares, while few seemed to understand how frightened, how cold, and how alone she’d felt.
The center was on the smaller side, with only three hundred beds or so, but Octavia was blown away by its extravagance. While training during the day, she’d never had time to explore the hospital. The building had the look and feel of a castle on the outside, and a modern flare on the inside. The ceilings were vaulted and the place spacious. A huge fireplace sat off on the far wall where people would gather. Burgundy and charcoal gray couches and chairs surrounded the fire. The walls were a mixture of colored stones in between tinted windows which you could not see in from the outside. Best of all, it had a great reputation for nurturing a content workforce.
As she roamed the exquisite room, like the doe child she once had been, she became overwhelmed with anticipation. Along the stone walls were stands with inspirational quotes inscribed on large tablets. One, in particular, caught her eye. It read: “When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.” Octavia was speechless as she wandered closer to the plaque, kissed her hand, and touched the saying with trembling fingers. She thought of her mother and all those who had loved and nurtured her.
A host of voices soon came to remind her that she was, in fact, in public, so she shook off the nostalgia and regrouped. Once she had positioned herself to leave, she felt a strong, electric surge — an intuition telling her to turn around. In the direct path of this gravitational pull stood the most striking creature she had ever laid eyes upon. As if the second hand on a clock had stopped, so did she, unable to turn away.
There he stood, on the other side of the lobby, wearing a dark tailored suit and commanding the attention of six others. His skin was a light olive tone. He had a dark beard which caressed the lower portion of his face. It connected to a well-kept mustache and surrounded his soft, full pink lips; not too full, just enough to make a girl wonder what they tasted and felt like against her skin. Standing at least six feet tall, his hands were in his pockets as he spoke in a mild manner. Octavia could not hear him, but she imagined his voice, deep, yet somehow soothing.
“My God, you are breathtaking.” Octavia’s chest rose and fell heavily as she whispered to herself. And as if he heard, the stranger became aware of her presence at that moment. Octavia's breath stuttered. She looked away for a split second, feeling herself blush, but glanced back, simply because she had to. The magnetism between the two made her shiver. In all honesty, he stole her breath away.
She had thought it impossible that he could be any more alluring, but the impossible became real when he looked her way. He was magnificent. His features were so flawlessly sculpted that he almost didn’t appear to be a living, breathing man. What she absolutely loved was the white streak in the front of his dark hair. His eyes were majestic, set in the deepest shade of blue. Those two oceanic windows both warmed and chilled her core, as a keen sense of familiarity took hold. “You cannot be real,” she whispered.
As his eyes continued to linger in her direction, his listeners waited for his attention. When it did not come in a timely fashion, the others turned to see what had caught his interest.
The world be damned. Octavia and the alluring man continued to stare at each other. Neither said a word or moved toward each other; they were simply trapped in each other’s gazes. They forgot a world existed outside of themselves. To others, it would've appeared that Octavia was held spellbound and he was the spell caster, but somehow, he was caught up in his own enchantment.
The magic broke when a woman stood in between them, blocking their view of one another and shaking Octavia out of her stupor. A fit of anger overcame Octavia as she fell back to Earth. It was such a rush that she had to catch the very breath he’d stolen. She hurried off without turning back.
Once around the corner, Octavia fell against the wall. She remained confused as to what had just happened. She covered her mouth with shaking hands, desperately trying to compose herself.
What was that?
