Title: A Dream in the Wilderness
Author: Jean Hackensmith
Publisher: Jean Hackensmith
Publication Date: October 9, 2024
Pages: 285
Genre: Historical Romance

Unable to find a teaching position in the flooded job market that is New York City, twenty-one-year-old Sarah Bentley accepts the position of nanny to Caleb Wachsmann’s three children after the farmer’s wife, parents, and infant son die in the Cholera epidemic of 1834. The twist? The job is in Superior, Wisconsin in the Michigan Territory, an unsettled wilderness located on the northwestern tip of Lake Superior.

Caleb is not looking for love; his heart will always belong to his beloved Annie. What he does need is a woman to watch after the children while he toils in the fields making a living for his family. Sarah turns out to be that woman. She raises his children with a gentle and loving hand and also helps Caleb to overcome an unbearable loss. As Wisconsin vies for statehood, the young couple will face challenge after challenge as they struggle to tame a wilderness that really doesn’t want to be tamed at all.

My thoughts:

A Dream in the Wilderness is a beautifully written story about a woman looking for adventure and a family in need of a caretaker.  I was quickly pulled into this story with the opening scene of Caleb standing over the graves of his wife, son and parents.  My heart broke for him and his surviving children and I was eager to find out what was going to come next.  What follows is a  sweet story about friendship turning into love and creating a family.  I loved Caleb and Sarah together.  Their friendship was so strong that I was rooting for them to end up together.  What I also liked about the book was a glimpse into what the pioneers faced as they tried to make a new life in the western wilderness.  The story takes place over a number of years, so we get to see the little town grow and neighborly friendships develop.  Since this is the first in a series, I look forward to reading the next book.

Book Excerpt:
Superior, Wisconsin
August 21, 1834

Caleb Wachsmann stood before the four open graves, his two eldest children on either side of him and the youngest in his arms. His entire body was numb. It still didn’t seem possible that all four of them could be gone. But they were. Cholera had taken them systematically, one by one. His father. His mother. His beloved wife, Annie, the mother of his children. His gaze settled on the last coffin, no more than three feet long. Inside was his six-month-old son, Danny.
Caleb and the older children got sick first. Caleb’s mother had been through other cholera epidemics and knew exactly what to do. They started boiling the drinking water from the nearby St. Louis River and, between her and Annie, and even his father, had forced tons of the bacteria-free water down their throats to prevent dehydration. At one time, Caleb joked that he thought he was going to float away.
He and the older children recovered. Then the rest of the family got sick. The rapid deterioration in their conditions made it impossible for Caleb to keep up with the hydration on all four of his patients. Danny was the first to succumb to the disease. He lasted only 24-hours after the first symptoms appeared. The others lasted two to three days.
Caleb couldn’t help but blame himself. He was responsible for their care, and he had failed.
“Pa?”
Caleb didn’t hear his son’s voice. He was too lost in his thoughts and his grief.
A yank on his shirt sleeve brought him back to reality.
“Pa!”
“What, Seth?” he asked with exasperation heavy in his tone as he looked down at the carrot-topped, freckle-faced boy before him. In fact, all of the children were the spitting image of their mother, and it made looking at them all the more painful.
“Why did we put Grandpa and Grandma and Ma and Danny in the ground? Grandma and Ma aren’t going to like it at all, cuz they don’t like to get dirty.”
Caleb stooped before his eight-year-old son, placing two-year-old Bethany on his knee, then indicated for the five-year-old Jenny to come closer, also. “Remember how I told you that your ma and Danny and your grandma and grandpa are in Heaven with God now?”
The two older children nodded.
“You see, what we put in the ground wasn’t your Mama and Danny anymore, or your grandma and grandpa. The part of her that made your mama your mama and Danny, Danny already went to Heaven.”
“Like their ghosts, you mean?” Seth asked.
“Their spirits,” Caleb corrected. “What’s in the ground is just what was left over and, in time, that part of them will go back to the ground.”
“But it still kinda looked like Ma when you and Father Hauley put the cover on the box,” Seth argued.
Caleb sighed his resignation. “Yes, it did. I don’t know how to explain it better, Seth. When you get older, you’ll understand.”
“So, who’s gonna take care of us now, Pa?” Jenny asked. “Mama and Grandma always took care of us when you and Grandpa were out in the fields plantin’ stuff.”
“I haven’t figured that out yet, honey, but I will.”
The little girl’s green eyes teared and her face scrunched up with her sadness. “I miss Mama, Pa. I want her to come back.”
The sight of his sister’s anguish brought renewed tears to Seth’s eyes also, and Caleb pulled both of them close. Bethany put pudgy arms around her older brother and sister and joined in the hug.
The traveling priest who had performed the ceremony, the only other person present at the burial, looked on in sympathy when he considered what lay ahead for the young father. It was unheard of for a man to raise three children on his own, especially a farmer who spent ten to twelve hours a day cultivating his fields. Yes, Caleb Wachsmann was going to have to find a woman, and he was going to have to do it soon.

About the Author

I have been writing since the age of twenty. (That’s 47 years and, yes, I’m disclosing my age.) I am the proud mother of three and grandmother to four wonderful grandchildren. After losing who I thought was the love of my life, my late husband Ron, in November of 2011, I met Rick. So, it is definitely possible to have more than one "love of your life." Rick and I were married in July of 2018 and are still going strong today. He is my soulmate, my confidant, and my biggest fan. He has read every book I have ever written (even the romances!)

Next to writing, my second passion is live theater. I founded a local community theater group back in 1992 and directed upwards of 40 shows, including three that I authored. I also appeared on stage a few times, portraying Anna in The King and I and Miss Hannigan in Annie. I am sad to say that the theater group dropped its final curtain in 2008, but those 16 years will always hold some of my fondest memories.

I moved from Superior 15 years ago, seeking the serenity of country living. I also wanted to get away from the natural air conditioning provided by Lake Superior. We moved only 50 miles south, but the temperature can vary by 20-30 degrees. I guess I’m a country girl at heart. I simply love this area, and am lucky to, once again, have someone to share its beauty. I love the solitude, the picturesque beauty of the sun rising over the water, the strangely calming effect of watching a deer graze outside your kitchen window. Never again, will I live in the city. I am an author, after all, and what better place to be inspired than in God’s own backyard.

Review: Winning Her Duke by Allison B. Hanson

Author: Allison B. Hanson
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing (audiobook)
Publication Date: February 2024

When Gia Landon is tricked into a London season by her father, she is pleased to have found a friend who shares her love of horses in the Duke of Roxburghe. The surly Scot enjoys living in London and hates the country, while Gia despises everything about society.

Hale knows Gia has no intention of marrying. She is simply biding her time until her father gives up and allows her to return to the country. Which means there is no danger in spending his days in her company discussing their one true love…race horses.

But soon, their shared love of all things equine begins to grow, and a friendship they thought was safe tempts them into crossing the line into scandal.

In Winning Her Duke,  Gia never wanted a season. She just wants to take care of her horses and live in the country.  She hates London society.  Hale has no desire to marry either. Although he does enjoy the city and a good ball.  Their unexpected friendship and love of horses poses a perfect solution to keep the suitors at bay.   I thought this was  a really adorable romance.  I enjoyed watching Gia and Hale fall for each other. They were really cute as they fought their attraction. Their friendship first made it all the more sweet when they got to their HEA.  My only real complaint was the "miscommunication" toward the end.  It was unnecessary and frustrating.  This is the first in a series, so I will be continuing with the next book soon.

My Thoughts:

An Unsuitable Heiress is a really adorable and sweet romance.  It involves Corina who sets out to find her father in an attempt to avoid being married off to someone she has no interest in.  In order to travel under the radar, she dresses up as a boy.  She quickly finds out that  being a boy doesn't mean she is safe. Thankfully, Alick and his friends come to the rescue.

As I said, I thought this was an adorable story.  I really enjoyed all of the friendships in this one.  Especially between the guys and Corina.  Once they realized she was a girl, I was happy to see that the friendships didn't diminish.  The love story between Alick and Corina was subtle, but it really worked for me.  I loved the ending.  The story line with Corina and her father was bittersweet. I really loved this book and I highly recommend it!  I hope to read  other guys get their own stories.

Blog Tour: Review of Cinderella and the Duke by Lydia Drake

Author: Lydia Drake
Publisher: Entangled: Amara (December 27, 2022)
Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages

Miss Julia Beaumont has exactly one night to find herself a husband…
The Weatherford Ball is the last chance Julia Beaumont has to escape the clutches of her horrid stepmother. Any potential husband will do–rich, poor, even a reasonably well-groomed walrus. But all of Julia’s matrimonial chances are completely obliterated…thanks to the actions of an infuriating and utterly rakish duke.

Gregory Carter, Duke of Ashworth, would never risk his cherished bachelorhood by flirting with marriage-starved debutantes. But one look at the luscious and refreshingly clever Julia, and he simply can’t resist a stolen kiss–scandal be damned. Then just as things start getting deliciously interesting, the lady flees…leaving only a slipper behind.

And it must have been one dandy of a kiss. Because now Julia has proposed to him. After all, the lady needs a husband, and this roguish duke will certainly do. It’s simply a matter of making him the perfect scandalous offer…

My Thoughts:

Cinderella and the Duke isn't exactly a retelling. I would call it loosely associated.  It is about a marriage of convenience between  Julia, a spinster, and Gregory, a duke.  I thought this was a really sweet romance.  The couple got married for their own questionable reasons, but there was major chemistry.  It was a lot of fun watching these two fall for each other.  They were well matched if a bit stubborn.  I loved the slow build up to the eventual consummation.  The tension was off the charts!  I highly recommend this one.  I would also love to know if Susannah will get a story.

Review: The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

Author: Erica Ridley
Publisher: Forever
Publication Date:  February 2021

Chloe Wynchester is completely forgettable—a curse that gives her the ability to blend into any crowd. When the only father she's ever known makes a dying wish for his adopted family of orphans to recover a missing painting, she's the first one her siblings turn to for stealing it back. No one expects that in doing so, she'll also abduct a handsome duke.

Lawrence Gosling, the Duke of Faircliffe, is tortured by his father's mistakes. To repair his estate's ruined reputation, he must wed a highborn heiress. Yet when he finds himself in a carriage being driven hell-for-leather down the cobblestone streets of London by a beautiful woman who refuses to heed his commands, he fears his heart is hers. But how can he sacrifice his family's legacy to follow true love?

The Duke Heist is the first book in the Wild Wynchesters series.  Chloe is one of the infamous Wynchesters.  A group of orphans who were adopted off of the streets by a very loving man.  When he dies, they try to get back a painting that was stolen from them. THis puts Chloe directly in the path of their enemy, the Duke of Faircliffe.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a fun and sweet historical romance. Chloe and Lawrence were perfect for each other.  Lawrence was looking so hard for a home and loving family.  Chloe was waiting to finally be seen.  Their chemistry was amazing and I loved watching them fall for each other.  Lawrence did take a bit too long with the "I can't marry you , I need money" excuse.  That was the only thing I didn't love.  Along with the sweet romance, the best part of the book was Chloe's family.  They were all wonderful characters, chosen family and fiercely loyal.  I look forward to reading their stories later in the series.  I definitely recommend this one.

Blog Tour: The Duke's Rules of Engagement by Jennifer Haymore

Author:  Jennifer Haymore
Publisher: Entangled: Amara (September 27, 2022)
Mass Market Paperback: 384 Pages

Some matches are made in hell…
Joanna Porter loves being one of London’s hottest up-and-coming matchmakers. But her heavenly vocation is about to turn into a nuptial nightmare–thanks to the Duke of Crestmont. He’s as handsome as he is insufferable and obsessed with all things proper. Matching him would cement Jo’s status as England’s greatest matchmaker. Except, of course, the impossible-to-please duke refuses all of her most eligible ladies…confirming his status as a complete and utter pain in her petticoats.

The Duke of Crestmont can’t believe he needs a matchmaker–let alone this spitfire of a woman whose kissable mouth and dancing, impertinent gray eyes tease him ruthlessly. But the people of his estate are counting on him to find a duchess. A proper lady with a flawless pedigree and immaculate deportment. So why can’t he stop himself from wanting his pert, lively matchmaker…instead of the perfect duchess?
Now the entire ton is watching as this determined, audacious matchmaker takes on the most powerful man in London in USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Haymore’s lively new Regency romp. And this show might just be the most outrageous one yet…

My thoughts:

The Duke's Rules of Engagement was a fairly enjoyable historical romance.  I did enjoy watching the couple fall for each other.  There were also some humorous parts. Joanna's love of romance and love matches was really sweet. There wasn't too much angst.  I would recommend this one.

Blog Tour: Review of Much Ado About Dukes by Eva Devon

Author: Eva Devon
Mass Market Paperback: Entangled: Amara (August 23, 2022)
Publisher: 352 Pages

Shakespeare meets Bridgerton in this witty and lively marriage-of-inconvenience romance.

As far as William Easton?the Duke of Blackheath?is concerned, love can go to the devil. Why would a man need passion when he has wealth, a stately home, and work to occupy his mind? But no one warned the duke that a fiery and frustratingly strong-willed activist like Lady Beatrice Haven can also be a stunning, dark-haired siren who tempts a man’s mind, body, and soul.

Lady Beatrice is determined to never marry. Ever. She would much rather fight for the rights of women and provoke the darkly handsome Duke of Blackheath, even if he does claim to be forward-thinking. After all, dukes?even gorgeous ones?are the enemy. So why does she feel such enjoyment from their heated exchanges?

But everything changes when Beatrice finds herself suddenly without fortune, a husband, or even a home. Now her future depends on the very man who sets her blood boiling. Because in order to protect his esteemed rival, the Duke of Blackheath has asked for Beatrice’s hand, inviting his once-enemy into his home…and his bed.

Each book in the Never a Wallflower series is STANDALONE:
* The Spinster and the Rake
* Much Ado About Dukes

My thoughts:

Much Ado About Dukes is the second book in the Never a Wallflower Series.  I'll be honest, I think I liked this one less than the first book.  Maybe this series just isn't for me. Since I'm not a fan of Shakespeare or Bridgerton, I guess that should have been a sign.  I had a hard time connecting with the characters.  I didn't feel any chemistry between William and Beatrice, other than being told they were hot for each other every page.  I found Beatrice to be overbearing and exhausting.  The book was a bit repetitive.  Constantly being told they were hot for each other, but could never love each other got old.  The ending was predictable.  It was just a miss for me.  However, it has gotten good reviews, so maybe try it for yourself.

About Eva Devon

USA Today bestseller Eva Devon was raised on literary fiction, but quite accidentally and thankfully, she was introduced to romance one Christmas by Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory novella The Present and a romance addict was born. Now, she loves to write her own roguish dukes, alpha males, and the heroines who tame them.

Blog Tour: Review of A Matter of Temptation by Stacy Reid

Author: Stacy Reid
Mass Market Paperback: 400 Pages
Publisher: Entangled: Amara (June 28, 2022)

A sexy, sumptuous Victorian start to a new historical series from USA Today bestselling author Stacy Reid.

Miss Wilhelmina “Mina” Crawford is desperate. Having been ruined in the eyes of society years ago for one foolish, starry-eyed mistake, she spends her days secreted away at her family’s crumbling estate, helping her brother manage the land but not able to truly live life the way she’s always dreamed. When her brother admits to just how dire their finances have gotten, she takes it upon herself to procure employment…but the only one who will even consider the scandalous idea of a female secretary is the brilliant, ruthless, and infuriating Earl of Creswick.

A Matter of Temptation is the first in a new series set in Victorian England.  It is Mina and Simon's story. Simon hires Mina as his secretary.  She needs money to help save her family estate.  The biggest problem is both of them spend their time trying to resist temptation.

I really enjoyed this one.  It was a lot of fun watching this couple fall for each other.  Their banter was wonderful and made me laugh. Their attraction was intense and steamy.  I loved Simon, especially what he was willing to do for Mina in the end so that they could be together.  It was cute how he kept firing her only to have her say, "no thanks.".  I did get a little slowed down by the reform political talk. At times, it felt a little like an info-dump/history lesson.  Despite that, I still loved this book.  I highly recommend it.

Review: How to Dance with a Duke by Manda Collins

Author: Manda Collins
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: January 2012

Miss Cecily Hurston would much rather explore the antiquities of Egypt than the uncharted territory of marriage. But the rules of her father’s exclusive academic society forbid her entrance unless she weds one of its members. To clear her ailing father’s name of a scandalous rumor, Cecily needs to gain admission into the Egyptian Club—and is willing to marry any old dullard to do it.

Lucas Dalton, Duke of Winterson, is anything but dull. He’s a dashing and decorated war hero determined to help Cecily—even if that means looking the other way when she claims the dance card of Amelia Snow, this season’s most sought-after beauty. But Lucas has a reason for wanting Cecily to join the Egyptian Club: His brother went missing during one of Lord Hurston’s expeditions to Egypt. An alliance with the explorer’s bluestocking daughter could bring Lucas closer to the truth about what happened…or it could lead him to a more dangerous love than either he or Cecily could have imagined

How to Dance with a Duke is a historical romance that I have had on my shelf for a long time.  I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it.  Cecily wants to have access to her father's diaries that might be able to prove he was not part of a scandal.  The only problem is that the society does not admit women.  Lucas's brother went missing and might have been a part of the scandal.  He is willing to help Cecily if it means he gets to the truth.

I thought this was a fun romance with a bit of a mystery and intrigue thrown in.  There is the hunt for Lucas's brother as well as for finding the missing diaries.  I did have an inkling as to who was behind it all, but there were still some surprisesThe mystery was a nicely balanced with the romance.  It was a lot of fun watching this couple fall for each other.  They suited nicely and were such a sweet couple.  I definitely recommend this one.  I can't wait to read the next book.

Review: The Lightkeeper's Ball by Colleen Coble

Author: Colleen Coble
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Publication Date: April 2011

It is the dawn of a new century and Olivia Stewart is heiress to an empire. Her family numbers among the Four Hundred—those considered the wealthiest and most distinguished in America. Unfortunately their wealth has nearly disappeared, and now their security rests upon the Stewart daughters marrying well.

Olivia's sister, Eleanor, was engaged to Harrison Bennett, one of the nation's wealthiest men, but has since died. Now the pressure is on Olivia to take her place, despite her suspicions about Eleanor's fiancé. Using her family's long-forgotten English title, Olivia travels to Mercy Falls, California, as Lady Devonworth, hoping to learn more before committing to marriage. There she finds that Eleanor's death was no accident. And Harrison is not the man she thought he would be.

When Mercy Falls holds a charity masquerade ball to raise funds for the new lighthouse, secrets—and truths long hidden—will be revealed. But can Harrison really love Olivia when he discovers her true identity? Can she live with the repercussions of failing her family, or will she finally realize that nothing—not money, family, or romance—will ever compare to God's unconditional love?

The Lightkeeper's Ball is the third and final book in the Merc Falls Trilogy.  In this one, Olivia is convinced that her sister did not commit suicide.  She travels to Mercy Falls in disguise to find out what really happened.  There, she has to decide if she can trust her sister's former fiancé, Harrison or if he is really a murderer.

While I did enjoy this one, the second book is still my favorite of the three books.  Having said that, Olivia and Harrison were very sweet together,  I loved how Harrison brought out Olivia's adventurous side.  They were a great match.  I also enjoyed the mystery.  There were a couple of real surprises that I definitely didn't call.  It was nice to catch up with the couples from the previous books.  There was one thing that I didn't care for was the deception that Olivia kept up.  She had so many chances to tell Harrison who she really was, yet she let the lie perpetuate.  I'm not a fan of this trope in general.  Despite that, I would recommend this one and the rest of the series.

Review: The Lightkeeper's Daughter by Colleen Coble

Author: Colleen Coble
Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication Date: January 2010

Addie Sullivan leads a quiet life in a northern California lighthouse. She mourns the death of her father and endures her mother's bitterness, until the night a storm brings an injured stranger and a dark secret to her home. The man insists she is not who she thinks she is, but rather "Julia Eaton"-the child long lost and feared dead by her wealthy family. Seizing the chance to be reunited with the Eatons, Addie leaves her lighthouse home but decides to keep her true identity a secret until they can unravel the mystery.

Addie loves the Eatons' palatial home tucked away among the California redwood forests. She feels secure with the jovial family, adores the young boy who is her charge as governess, and finds romance with his father John, a young widower. But sinister shadows overtake Addie's joy. As dusty rooms and secret compartments give up their clues about her past, Addie finds a faith and a love she could never have guessed. To embrace this new world of promise is to risk her life; but to run away is to risk losing the greatest love she's ever known.

The Lightkeeper's Daughter is the first book in the Mercy Falls series.  I've had this book and the others in the series on my TBR for a very long time.   Addie is living with her mother in a lighthouse when a stranger shows up and tells her she is really a missing heiress who was presumed dead at age 2.  This starts her on a journey to discover her lost family and a bigger mystery of what happened to her birth mother.

I really enjoyed this historical romance.  I haven't read a book set in the early 1900s in a long time, so it was a nice change of pace.  It's a very clean, Christian romance, which was also a nice change of pace.  Addie is a little naïve, but she is also not afraid to speak her mind.  She was my favorite of the book.  The romance was sweet and a pleasure to watch. I also enjoyed the mystery.  I did call on of the twists fairly early on, but I still enjoyed the journey.  I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt from Counterfeit Love by Crystal Caudill

Author: Crystal Caudill
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Publication Date: March 2022

Can this undercover agent save the woman he loves—or is her heart as counterfeit as the money he’s been sent to track down?

After all that Grandfather has sacrificed to raise her, Theresa Plane owes it to him to save the family name--and that means clearing their debt with creditors before she marries Edward Greystone. But when one of the creditors’ threats leads her to stumble across a midnight meeting, she discovers that the money he owes isn’t all Grandfather was hiding. And the secrets he kept have now trapped Theresa in a life-threatening fight for her home--and the truth.

After months of undercover work, Secret Service operative Broderick Cosgrove is finally about to uncover the identity of the leader of a notorious counterfeiting ring. That moment of triumph turns to horror, however, when he finds undeniable proof that his former fiancé is connected. Can he really believe the woman he loved is a willing participant? Protecting Theresa and proving her innocence may destroy his career--but that’s better than failing her twice in one lifetime.

They must form a partnership, tentative though it is. But there’s no question they’re both still keeping secrets--and that lack of trust, along with the dangerous criminals out for their blood, threatens their hearts, their faith, and their very survival.

Combining rich history, danger, suspense, and romance, Crystal Caudill’s debut novel launches this new historical series with a bang. Fans of Elizabeth Camden, Michelle Griep, and Joanna Davidson Politano will be thrilled to find another author to follow!

My thoughts:

Counterfeit Love is a historical romantic suspense featuring Theresa and Broderick.  IT's also kind of a second chance romance.  However, Theresa is engaged to another man when they meet up again.  This ended up being an OK read for me.  I felt like it was a little too long and I did skim read in parts.  I figured out one of the reveals fairly early on in the book.  Throughout the book, I kept feeling like tis was a sequel.  But, it isn't because it's a debut novel. I just felt like I was missing something.

I did like the characters especially Theresa. I liked her drive to do whatever it took to take care of her grandfather and keep their house.  She was brave and smart. Edward was clearly all wrong for her, so I was definitely team Broderick.  This is a clean Christian romance. that is heavier on the suspense than the romance. Give it a try.
