Blog Tour: Review of One Year Home by Marie Force

John
I have no idea how to survive without my
beloved Ava She had no choice but to move on with her life during my six-year deployment and has now married Eric. I hate him for taking her from me. I’d prefer to wallow in my depression and heartbreak, but the whole damned world wants a piece of the SEAL Team leader who helped capture the world’s most-wanted terrorist. I need help handling the relentless requests, and when Ava sends her new sister-in-law to manage the media circus for me, I’m prepared to hate her on principle. Her brother took my Ava. What else do I need to know about her?

Julianne
It takes five seconds to realize Ava’s ex is going to be the most complicated and difficult client I’ve ever had, but the opportunity to represent the most celebrated man in the world could make my career. I’m determined to do the job, even if I dislike John from the moment I meet him. And I like everyone. So much so that my brothers worry about me being exploited by those who would take advantage of my unwavering love for others. But John… He’s in a class by himself, and his bitterness is a festering wound that I begin to wish I could somehow fix for him. The more time we spend together, the more our mutual disdain morphs into something that feels an awful lot like desire. There’s no way I can want this man, or so I tell myself, and when Eric finds out I’ve developed feelings for the man causing trouble in his new marriage, well…

That’s going to be a hot mess.

My thoughts:

One Year Home is the follow up to Five Years Gone.  This is John and Julianne's story.  After having been secretly deployed for 5 years, John comes back to find his girlfriend Ava has moved on and is getting married.  He is a war hero and Julianne is hired to help him with PR.

I'll preface this by saying I did not read the first book and it may have caused me to not love this book as much as I wanted to.  I did end up enjoying John and Jules's part of the story.  Yes, it was fast, but I found myself believing their whirlwind romance and I was rooting for them.  It was nice to see John get a HEA after what he went through.  What I didn't care for were Ava and Eric's parts in the story.  I think if I had read the first book, I might be more invested in what was going on with their relationship.  But I found I really didn't care and thought their fight was kind of ridiculous.  I just didn't feel the emotion behind it and found it unnecessary.

I would recommend reading Five Years Gone before this one.  It may help Ava and Eric story make a bit more sense.  Still, I do recommend reading the romance between John and Jules.  They were a great couple.

Blog Tour: Review of Till There was You by Marie Force

Being an adult has its advantages...

Lucas Abbott and his identical twin grew up sharing everything—including a reputation for funny, idiotic behavior. But now that Lucas is ready to shed that lovable-idiot image, grow up and have a real, adult relationship, the joke’s on him. He and his twin have fallen for the same woman.

Crushed and hoping a few days on the slopes will work out his frustrations, he heads for Stowe, Vermont. All thought of fun and relaxation flies away as a car spins out in a snowstorm, and his firefighter/paramedic training kicks into high gear.

Danielle Rowson is hoping to pick up the pieces and build a new life for herself and her daughter in Vermont. Winding up in a ditch in the middle of a blizzard isn’t part of the plan—and neither is the kind, sexy rescuer whose strong hands pull them to safety.

Lucas has been a little kid, a big kid and now an adult—and he discovers that adulting has more than one advantage. Especially when it comes to sharing with Dani and Savannah the one thing that’s his and his alone: his love.

Till There was You is the fourth book in the Butler, Vermont series.  It's the first one that I have read and it held up well as a stand alone book.  I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not having read any of the other books in the series.  This one is Lucas and Danielle's story.

I thought this was a very sweet and slow burn romance.  I loved that Lucas and Danielle took time to get to know each other as friend before taking it further. It was sweet watching Lucas fall for Dani and little Savannah.   I  respected Dani wanting to stand on her own before the took the plunge again.  I also loved that there was not a lot of angst.

Lucas is one of 10 children.  That means there is huge cast of characters coming in and out of the narrative.  They were wonderful and added a lot of humor and color to the story.  The downside of coming into  a big series late in the game is that when I like a cast of characters, I end up wanting to go back and read the rest of the books. This adds to my ever growing TBR pile.  The upside is I have a lot of other family member romances to read about and get to stay in the world for a little bit longer.  I definitely recommend this one.

Blog Tour: Review of Fatal Invasion by Marie Force

Author: Marie Force
Publisher: Harlequin
Date of publication: November 2018

First the fire, then the heat…
A brutal home invasion. Two small traumatized survivors who may have witnessed the horror. Lieutenant Sam Holland has never worked a case quite like this one, in which her eyewitnesses are five-year-old twins. But when Sam steps up in a big way for them, she risks her heart as much as her career.

While Sam and her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, go to battle in more ways than one for her tiny witnesses, her colleague Sergeant Tommy “Gonzo” Gonzales battles his own demons. Months of unbearable grief and despair come to a head in an unimaginable way that threatens Gonzo’s status with the department and his relationship with his fiancée, Christina.
With trouble both at the precinct and on the case, Sam struggles to keep her priorities straight at home and at work while trying not to lose her heart to her latest crime victims.

Fatal Invasion is the thirteenth book featuring Sam and Nick.  It's the second book I have read. The first book I read worked fairly well as a stand alone.  However, I know I would have benefited more from reading the entire series before reading this one.  I often felt like I was trying to catch up.  Parts of the book made me feel like I was reading a soap opera.  I kind of felt like there were too many side stories and they took away from the main mystery.

The mystery was good and that is what kept me engaged.  Also, I do really like the relationship between Sam and Nick.  Their banter and attraction is because is fun to read.  The ending was sweet.  I know that fans of this series will enjoy this installment.

Blog Tour: Fatal Chaos by Marie Force

Author: Marie Force
Publisher; Harlequin
Date of publication: February 2018

First the calm. Then the storm…
Escaping DC during the dog days of summer is one of the smartest moves Washington metro police lieutenant Samantha Holland ever made. Beach walks aren’t quite as romantic with the Secret Service in tow, but Sam and her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, cherish the chance to recharge and reconnect—especially with a scandal swirling around the administration.

No sooner are they back home than a fatal drive-by shooting sets the city on edge. The teenage victim is barely older than Sam and Nick’s son, Scotty. As more deaths follow, Sam and her team play beat the clock to stop the ruthless killers. With Nick facing his greatest challenge—one that could drastically change all their lives and even end Sam’s career—will the mounting pressure deepen or damage their bond?

Fatal Chaos is the 12th book in the "Fatal" series.  But it is the first one that I have read.  Normally, I wouldn't pick up a book so late in the series, but this one looked interesting.  The down side of coming in so late is that you do miss some of the back story behind the characters. But, when  an author does a good job of not making me feel lost, I am more inclined to finish the book.  In this case, the author did a pretty good job of giving enough background to earlier events that I didn't feel like I was late to the party.  I was able to settle right into the story and enjoy it.

The mystery was really good.  I enjoyed solving the case with Sam and her partner.  It was definitely a solid police procedural.  I was curious to see how the fact that Sam is the Second Lady of the US while also being a homicide detective would be handled.  I got a reasonable explanation that made sense, so it seemed plausible.

I enjoyed the relationship between Sam and Nick.  They kind of reminded me of Eve and Roarke.  It was actually refreshing to come into a book where the relationship was firmly established.  It cut down on the angst.  I liked them so much that I definitely want to go back to the beginning and read how they got together.  The secondary characters were interesting and I want to know more about them as well. The next book comes out in November of this year.  That gives me plenty of time to get caught up.
