Review: Murder Road by Simone St. James

 Author: Simone St. James
Publisher:  Berkley
Publication Date: March 2024

July 1995. April and Eddie have taken a wrong turn. They’re looking for the small resort town where they plan to spend their honeymoon. When they spot what appears to be a lone hitchhiker along the deserted road, they stop to help. But not long after the hitchhiker gets into their car, they see the blood seeping from her jacket and a truck barreling down Atticus Line after them.

When the hitchhiker dies at the local hospital, April and Eddie find themselves in the crosshairs of the Coldlake Falls police. Unexplained murders have been happening along Atticus Line for years and the cops finally have two witnesses who easily become their only suspects. As April and Eddie start to dig into the history of the town and that horrible stretch of road to clear their names, they soon learn that there is something supernatural at work, something that could not only tear the town and its dark secrets apart, but take April and Eddie down with it all.

Murder Road is the latest paranormal mystery by Ms. St, James.  For the most part, I have enjoyed her books, so I was eager to read this one.  April and Eddie are headed to their honeymoon site when they get lost and come upon a figure wandering down the highway.  The woman has been stabbed.  After taking her to the ER, they become the prime suspects in her murder.

I did ultimately enjoy this one.  The best part of the book was the main couple.  April and Eddie were just great characters.  Their relationship was fun and strong.  There wasn't really any angst between them as they went though their ordeal.  I really liked that aspect.  There is a ghost story here, but I found it confusing.  I didn't understand the motive behind the ghost. So that was disappointing.  The story is well paced and and had me hooked. There were also some surprises. I do recommend it.

Review: Whispers at Dusk by Heather Graham

Author: Heather Graham
Publisher:  MIRA
Publication Date: June 2023

When darkness falls, there’s nowhere to hide.

Four bodies have been discovered along Europe’s riverbanks, placed with care—and completely drained of blood. Pinpricks on their throats indicate a slender murder weapon, but DNA found in the wounds suggests something far more sinister. Tasked with investigating, the FBI recruits Agents Della Hamilton and Mason Carter to Blackbird, an international offshoot of the Krewe of Hunters. If you want to catch a vampire killer, you need agents who can speak with the dead.

The pair travel to Norway, where the shadowy forests of Lillehammer reveal a gruesome scene. The killer is thirsty for more victims, and the bloodless trail soon leads Della and Mason to a group that believes drinking blood is the key to immortality. To catch the culprit of such an intimate crime, the agents will have to get close. Mason’s already lost one partner; he’s not ready to risk Della as bait. But sometimes justice requires a sacrifice…

Whispers at Dusk is the first book in the Blackbird Trilogy.  It is also the first in an off-shoot series about the Krewe of Hunters going international.  It works well as a stand alone, which was good for me since I am way behind on the Krewe series.  This trilogy focuses on the set up of Blackbird (the name of the group) and Della and Mason.  They are on the hunt for an international serial killer.

I thought this was a solid set-up for a newish series.  I liked the idea of the Krewe going outside of the US.  It's nice to change up long running series sometimes.  As for this over-all story, I did ultimately enjoy it.  I liked Della and Mason, although their romance was a bit too quick and easy for me.  I would have liked it to drag out a little longer before they hooked up. My biggest issue is all of the info dumping in the book.  There were pages and pages of history lessons about each area they went to.  It really slowed the story down for me.    I won't say this the best I have read by this author, but it's worth trying out.

Review: The Restless Dark by Erica Waters

Author: Erica Waters
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: October 2022

Enter Cloudkiss Canyon at your own risk.

The Cloudkiss Killer is dead. Now a true-crime podcast is hosting a contest to find his bones.

Lucy was almost the serial killer’s final victim. Carolina is a true-crime fan who fears her own rage. Maggie is a psychology student with a little too much to hide.

All of them are looking for answers, for a new identity, for a place to bury their secrets.

But there are more than bones hiding in the shadows…sometimes the darkness inside is more frightening than anything the dead leave behind.

Perfect for fans of Sadie and Wilder Girls, this newest novel from Erica Waters follows three girls at a true-crime contest to find the bones of a lost killer—even as a mysterious force pulls at the contestants’ darkest desires.

The Restless Dark takes place in Cloudkiss Canyon during a true crime themed camping trip.  It's a contest to find the bones of a serial killer.  Lucy was his final girl and she has returned to hopefully find some peace.  Two other girls are there and they have their own alternative motives for being there. Who can be trusted and will they find what they are looking for?

I didn't really care too much for this book.  Literally nothing happened until about the last quarter of the book.  I never felt like anyone was in danger.  I did like the atmosphere.  The fog seemed ominous and creepy.  But that was about it.  I didn't care for any of the characters.  I had a hard time believing that once the podcasters found out one of the girls was under age that they would just let her stay.  I didn't love the ending and had way too many questions.  In the end, I just didn't get what I was hoping for with this book. I don't really recommend it.

Review: The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James

Author: Simone St. James
Publisher: Berkeley
Publication Date: March 2022

In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect--a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion.

Oregon, 2017Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases--a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes.

They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

The Book of Cold Cases is a dual timeline thriller/ghost story that involves Shea.  She has a popular true crime blog and spends her nights investigating cold cases.  Claire was acquitted of murder in the 70s.  But, there was always a question of whether she really got away with murder or not.

I ultimately enjoyed this one, I just didn't love it.  I will admit to not liking it as much as her last book, The Sun Down Hotel.  It was more mystery and less ghost story.  There is a paranormal element, but it was kind of underwhelming.  I was surprised as to who the ghost was, so that was a nice twist.  I was just hoping for more.  I feel like there was too much time spent in the past and not enough of Shea finding out what really happened.  It was told to us instead of her figuring it all out for herself.  I did like Shea's character.  Her trauma as a child really drove her life as a adult. She was the best part of the book.  I do recommend this one, it's just not my favorite of hers.

My thoughts:

Burglary at Barnard is the second book in the Oxford Key series.  This one takes place a couple of months after the first book.  This time around, Nat is at Barnard College to set up an event.  While Nat and the other prefects are investigating the theft of a candlestick, they find a secret chamber in the archives along with another dead body.

I enjoyed this installment.  The murder mystery was fun to solve.  We get to learn a little bit more about the magic at Oxford.  I wish it was a lot more, but I suspect this will be drawn out over the subsequent books in the series.  The characters from the first book are back in this one as well as a new and surprising addition.  I love Nat's group of friends.  There is also a nice revelation about one of the characters...I won't tell who.  I also love the romance that is blossoming between Nat and Edward.  It's seriously really sweet.  I definitely recommend this one.

My thoughts:

When I started The Swansong Conspiracy, I wasn't sure if I was going to like the story.  I was definitely pleasantly surprised.  I was quickly pulled into the world that the author has created.  I liked his take on why supernatural creatures are now a reality in this world.   The twins were great characters and ones I would love to follow in their further adventures.  They were given a task and I am rooting for them to complete it in future books.  Time was also a fun character.  I listened to the audiobook for this.  I thought that the narrator did a great job with the voices.  My only complaint was the laugh he had for Tim.  I could have done without that.  I definitely recommend checking this one out..

Review: All the Colors of Night by Jayne Ann Krentz

Author: Jayne Ann Krentz
Publisher: Berkley
Publication Date: January 2021

North Chastain possesses a paranormal talent that gives him the ability to track down the most dangerous psychic criminals. When his father suddenly falls into a coma, North is convinced it was caused by a deadly artifact traced back to the days of a secret government laboratory known only as the Bluestone Project. North knows his only hope of saving his father is to find the artifact. He is good when it comes to tracking down killers but to locate the relic, he's going to need help from a psychic who knows the shadowy world of obsessive collectors, deceptive dealers, and ruthless raiders…

With her reputation in ruins after a false accusation, antique expert Sierra Raines is looking for a fresh start. She turns to the murky backwaters of the paranormal artifacts trade, finding and transporting valuable objects with a psychic provenance. When North Chastain approaches her for help, Sierra takes him on as a client, though not without reservations. North represents the mysterious Foundation, the secretive organization established to police the underworld populated by psychic criminals and those, like Sierra, who make a living in the shadows of that world.

All the Colors of  Night is the second book in the Fogg Lake series.  This one is North and Sierra's story.  While it works well as a stand alone, I do think you will get more context if you read The Vanishing first.  I really enjoyed this one.  I thought North and Sierra were great together.  Their chemistry was more of a slow burn and it was really cute.  What I loved most about both characters was their indecision about what their life path should be.  They both have strong powers, but do not really have an idea as to their life purpose.  I loved what they both figured out in the end, especially Sierra's idea.  It was perfect.

The mystery was really good.  It kept me guessing.  There  is a story arc that seems to be spanning multiple books that ties back to the secret labs in Fogg Lake.  That cliffhanger at the end is making me wish I had the next book right now. My one wish was that The Abyss was explored more.  That house sounds fascinating. It looks like it is going to be Olivia's story next and I can't wait!

Review: The Vanishing by Jayne Ann Krentz

Author: Jayne Ann Krentz
Publisher: Berkeley
Publication Date: January 2020

Forty years ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, "The Incident" occurred: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases, causing peculiar effects on its residents, such as strange visions and ominous voices. Not wanting the government to get involved, they chalked it up to the hallucinogenic effects of mushrooms. Little did they know these effects would linger through the generations....

Residents Catalina Lark and Olivia Dayton have been best friends for years and own an investigation firm together, using what they call the "other sight" to help with their business. When Olivia goes missing, Cat frantically begins the search for her alone when the town does nothing about it. When scientist Slate Trevelyan shows up, she has no choice but to accept his help even though there's something about him she just can't trust. The duo discovers someone is hunting the two witnesses of a murder in Fogg Lake fourteen years ago—the very one Cat and Olivia witnessed as teens, one that they couldn't prove happened. Cat and Slate's search for Olivia takes them down a rabbit hole that is far more dangerous and mysterious than they ever expected, and with a killer in their midst, neither of them can foresee who will come out alive.

The Vanishing is the first book in a new paranormal series that involves people from Fogg Lake.  Years ago, there was an incident that created a fog that caused residents to gain paranormal abilities.  10 years ago, Catalina and Olivia witnessed a murder in the caves.  Now they own an investigation business and the death they witnessed may have come back to haunt them.

This book reminded me a lot of the Arcane Society series that this author has written.  I really enjoyed all of those books.  The Vanishing was equally as enjoyable.  I really like the way this author writes paranormal stories.   The characters are always interesting and there is always fun action.  I liked the way Catalina and Slate worked together.  They had some great banter.  There was some insta-love here, but it didn't bother me because the way their powers worked made their instant attraction make sense.  The mystery was compelling and had me intrigued.  I wish there was more Olivia in the book, but hopefully she will have a book focused on her in the future.  I would definitely recommend this one.  It was a lot of fun.

Some Can See is the first book in the Northern Michigan Asylum Series. This was a fantastic paranormal mystery with many twists that will keep you listening well into the night.  I really enjoyed my listening experience of this audio-book.  The narrators did an excellent job.

The story follows a few perspectives and timelines.  Hattie and Jude are searching for the truth about what happened to their mother.  It also follows Sophia as she tries to survive the Asylum and the evil doctor who has been experimenting on her.  The truth about what was behind the experiments was really interesting and a cool premise.  I won't spoil it for you here. This was a great mystery.  I was kept guessing throughout.  There is also a great paranormal aspect to the story.  It was a nice balance.  I highly recommend this first one in the series.

Review: Donn's Shadow by Caryn Larrinaga

Author: Caryn Larrinaga
Narrator: Jessica McEvoy
Publisher: Audible Audio
Date of publication: May 2020

Mackenzie Clair finally has this whole ghost-hunting psychic thing figured out. The Soul Searchers are a hit, she’s got pet-parenting down, and she even has a plan to banish the poltergeist running amok at a lakeside cabin. Best of all, Donn’s Hill feels like home. But not everyone loves the town as much as Mac.

A world-famous paranormal debunker thinks the psychics in Donn’s Hill are lying about their abilities. His determination to destroy the Soul Searchers threatens Mac’s livelihood, and when a killer strikes, the sheriff’s suspicions threaten her freedom.

Mac needs all the help she can get to find the real murderer and clear her name… even if that help comes from beyond the grave.

Donn's Shadow is the follow-up to Donn's Hill.  This one picks up soon after the events of the fist book.  Because of that, I would not recommend reading them out of order.  This one will spoil you for the fist book.  This time around, Mackenzie and her crew are being scrutinized by a paranormal debunker.

I really enjoyed this second book. I listened to the audio book and the narrator did a great job on the story.   The characters were still well written and engaging.  We even get to meet some more characters from the town of Donn's Hill.  I found the balance of mystery and paranormal to be just right.  That was one thing I enjoyed about the first book.  I didn't call the ending.  I was completely going in the wrong direction.  While the main mystery is solved, there are still some questions that need to be answered.  The book kind of felt like it ended up on a cliffhanger.  I really hope another book comes out soon.  I look forward to reading it when it does.

My thoughts:

It's been a while since I have read a paranormal romantic suspense book.  Wolf Under Fire is the first in a new series featuring the Special Threat Assessment Team (STAT).  I think this is a spin-off series from this author's SWAT series.   While I was able to follow along, I feel like  I would have benefited from reading the previous series to feel fully immersed in the world.  Here paranormal creatures are real and some are dangerous.  I did like the twist in how people become werewolves.  That was unique.  I also liked the characters in the story.  I enjoyed watching the team figure out how to work together.  If you are a fan of shifters and paranormal creatures, I'd recommend trying this one out.

Enjoy this excerpt:

Jes sprinted down the hall without giving it a second thought. Grabbing the last man through the door by the collar of his jacket, she yanked him backward, flipping him over her hip and slamming him to the floor before he knew what was happening.
Balling her hand into a fist, she punched him in the throat hard enough to stun him, then ripped his pistol out of his grasp while he was gasping for air. Refusing to think about the brutality of the situation, she placed the barrel of the large-caliber automatic against the man’s chest and squeezed the trigger. In this position, the recoil of the big weapon was ferocious, but she ignored it—and the resulting blood—focusing instead on snagging the extra magazine from the man’s underarm holster.
Getting to her feet, she approached the room carefully. The last thing she needed was to catch a stray round from one of the guards—or Jake.
Pressing her back against the wall outside the open door, Jes darted to take a quick look inside. The room was filled with acrid smoke from the flashbangs, but she could still see the dead bodies strewn across the floor. Jake and Misty were nowhere in sight and something told her they’d taken cover behind the heavy desk that was flipped over.
The piece of furniture was thick enough to stop the spray of bullets the men were popping off, but the gunfire was so intense Jake couldn’t even try and get off a shot in return. Since the bad guys were already spreading wide to circle around and come at the desk from both sides, the situation was only going to get worse.
What if Jake had already been hit?
That thought scared the hell out of her. She’d heard a werewolf could absorb a lot of damage, but how much was too much?
“Backup’s arrived,” Jes announced loud enough for Jake to hear her in his earbud, even over the gunfire, then took aim and started shooting.
The moment the men realized someone was coming at them from behind, they turned their weapons on her. At the same time, Jake popped up from behind the desk and began blazing away with the automatic in his hand. Bodies started dropping under the combined effort.
Jes was sure they’d gained the upper hand, but then a flashbang came at her through the light haze of smoke still filling the room from the previous ones. Cursing, she leaped back into the hallway to keep it from blowing up right in her face. She hit the floor hard, the air getting knocked out of her. Ears ringing, she scrambled around and lifted her pistol, knowing a bad guy would be coming to finish her.
But no one did. A moment later, the shooting stopped. It was immediately replaced with a roar and a growl that seemed to echo through the house and make the entire third floor vibrate.
Jes quickly climbed to her feet, only to fall on her butt again as Jake and Damien crashed through the wall. Somewhere along the way, they’d lost their weapons and were now locked in hand-to-hand combat, like two enraged monsters. Jake wasn’t the only one with claws, either. Damien had them, too.
Jake had been sure the creature that had attacked Jaime and Neal wasn’t a werewolf, but seeing Damien fight, she was beginning to think Jake had been wrong.
Jes got up on one knee, trying to get a shot at Damien, but he and Jake were moving way too fast as they smashed each other into first one side of the hallway, then the other, fists slamming into their opponent so hard she could hear bones break.
She was about to say the hell with it and take a shot at Damien regardless of the risk, but then he slung Jake bodily across the hall, bouncing him off the wall. Even though it had to hurt, Jake immediately jumped to his feet and kicked Damien in the center of his chest, shoving him halfway down the hallway.
Jes didn’t waste the opportunity. Lifting her weapon, she emptied the remainder of her magazine in the man’s chest. Damien flew backward from the impact of all those rounds hitting, slamming into the floor so hard she felt it. She didn’t give a crap if he was a werewolf. That many bullets through the center of his chest had to mean he was freaking dead.
Dropping the spent clip, she quickly slammed a new magazine in and chambered a round. The son of a bitch had killed Jaime and Neal and tried to do the same to Jake. It took everything in her not to put all the bullets in the fresh magazine into him. The only thing stopping her was the knowledge that she might need them if they had to fight their way out of the manor.
She was so focused on keeping her weapon trained on Damien where he lay on the floor, she didn’t even realize Jake had disappeared back into the room until he ran out with a limp Misty in his arms. Jes’s heart sank like a stone.
“We need to go,” Jake said, striding past her and heading down the hallway away from the steps. “We’re about to have more company.”
Jes didn’t ask how Jake knew that. She simply chased after him.
The fight with Damien must have caused him some serious damage, but Jake carried Misty without slowing down. They were almost at the end of the corridor when she heard the thud of footsteps on the stairs behind them.
Jes glanced over her shoulder to see at least ten armed men reaching the third floor. That was bad enough. But then Damien sat up, shirt covered in blood and looking pissed as hell…and not nearly as dead as he should be. Suddenly, the group of armed men didn’t seem like a big deal. Damien worried her way more.
Turning, she sprayed the men—and Damien—with half the rounds in the magazine just to make them duck, then ran after Jake again. She expected him to seek refuge in the last room along the hallway. Instead, he yanked open the french doors at the end of the corridor with one hand, exposing a small Juliet balcony.
What the hell were they going to do with that? It wasn’t like they could hide out there. The balcony was too shallow. Besides, Damien and the rest of Darby’s men had already seen where they were headed.
Jes was about to ask Jake as much when he gently placed Misty on the floor. Before she could question the move, he turned, put both hands on Jes’s waist, then swung her over the metal railing of the balcony, holding her by one wrist and dangling her like a toy.
“When I let you go, grab the railing of the veranda below us,” he said, dark eyes intent on hers.
Wait. What?
Jes opened her mouth to tell him he was insane—that she wasn’t a werewolf with superstrength and animallike reflexes like him—but she was already falling. She released the pistol she didn’t even realize she was holding, somehow miraculously grabbing the railing on the second-floor veranda before she fell to her death.
Crap. It felt like her shoulders were being ripped out of their sockets.
She was never doing that again.
Jes was still hanging there in midair when she felt as much as heard Jake leap past her. She looked down just in time to see him land on his feet on the lawn below her, Misty wrapped firmly in his arms.
He’d jumped from the third floor of a building—with someone in his arms—and landed on his feet.
Double crap.
Setting Misty on the ground, he scooped up the automatic pistol Jes had dropped, firing it at something above her. She flinched when the bullets struck the metal balcony, but then felt like cheering when the men up there grunted as other bullets struck flesh.
“Let go!” he shouted to Jes before shooting another volley at the floor above her. “I’ll catch you.”
That idea was even crazier than the first one, but Jes did it, falling at a dizzying speed. She opened her mouth to scream, unable to stop herself, but then strong arms snatched her out of the air before setting her on her feet. She barely had a chance to catch her balance before Jake grabbed her hand and dragged her away from the manor.
He scooped up Misty in one arm on the way even as bullets kicked up the grass all around them. Seconds later, the big Rolls-Royce SUV was barreling across the lawn toward them, Harley at the wheel. The moment it skidded to a stop, Forrest jumped out of the passenger seat to take Misty from Jake while Caleb got out of the back and fired a MAC-10 machine gun at the remaining men on the third floor. Jes wasn’t sure if he hit anyone, but they sure as hell ducked.
Jake led Jes past Caleb and practically shoved her into the backseat, then jumped in after her, deftly climbing over her to take the window. The big omega followed, sitting on the other side of her and yanking the door closed as Harley floored it, tearing the grass to all hell as they sped away.
