Review: Heartbeat by Sharon Sala

Author: Sharon Sala
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Publication Date: February 2024

Sean Pope already lost Amalie Lincoln once. This time, he will risk everything to never have to say goodbye to her again.

Amalie Lincoln moved to Jubilee, Kentucky, to start fresh, build her business, and heal the scars of her past. Little did she know she'd run into Sean Pope, a beloved childhood friend she hasn't seen in decades. But on the day she moves to town, a helicopter explodes under suspicious circumstances, wreaking havoc on the families of Pope Mountain.

As the Jubilee PD dives into their investigation of the incident, Sean and Amalie find comfort and a budding romance with each other. Life in Jubilee becomes exactly what Amalie hoped for. But as the investigators uncover the truth and the crooks behind the attack set Amalie in their sights, Sean must face the danger or risk losing Amalie forever.

Heartbeat is the third book in the Jubilee, Kentucky series.  This one is Sean and Amalie's story.  It's a second chance friends to lovers story. with a little bit of mystery thrown in.  Sean and Amalie were friends when they were little.  A chance move to Jubilee, puts them in each others path.

I liked this a lot more than the second book.  While there were a lot of perspectives, it didn't annoy me as much as in the second book.  At the heart of the story is a renewal of a friendship of two fated people that turns into a sweet love story.  Sean and Amalie were very sweet together.   There is a little bit of a paranormal twist here that makes their love story that much sweeter.  The msytery was good too and also came with an even sweet twist in the end.  I do recommend this one.

Review: Last Rites by Sharon Sala

Author: Sharon Sala
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Publication Date: July 2023

There's nothing a community won't do to protect its own...

Shirley Wallace and her four sons return to her childhood home on Pope Mountain in Jubilee, Kentucky, with a lifetime of hardship behind them, hoping to find peace and begin their lives anew. Eldest brother Aaron Pope returns to his life as a police officer, and is settling in just fine. Then Aaron's investigation into an attempted murder leads him right to Dani Owens. She may hold the key to a long-lost part of the Pope family's past, and more importantly, she may hold the key to Aaron's heart.

Last Rites is the second book in the Jubilee, Kentucky series.  The series follows the Pope family.  This one is mostly Aaron and Dani's story.  Dani has moved to Jubilee to get a fresh start.  Aaron and his family have finally come home to live among their kin and start a new life as well.

I was so looking forward to this one.  I had enjoyed the first book and that mystery. So, I thought I 'd love this one.  Sadly, it really fell short of my expectations.  The book felt very unfocused to me and was all over the place.  There were too many points of view and story-lines.  There was a romance, but that was just kind of meh.  There was no suspense.  The two potential mysteries were easily solved and wrapped up just over halfway through the book.  The danger that Dani could have been in never really surfaced. The way her attacker was caught was kind of laughable and ridiculous.    The only thing I did like was the hunt for Meg and how her story was wrapped up.  That was bitter sweet.  So in all this one was a miss for me. Hopefully the next visit to Jubilee will be more focused and suspenseful.

Review: Don't Back Down by Sharon Sala

Author: Sharon Sala

Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Publication Date: February 2023

Army veteran Cameron Pope arrives back in Jubilee, Kentucky, for the first time in years. He barely has time to catch his breath when he becomes embroiled in a race of life or death for his little niece and a deadly hunt for the human traffickers who are destroying the peace of his mountain town. When he's reunited with Rusty Caldwell—a woman from his past who he's never stopped thinking about—he wants to believe they can finally be together. But Cameron is shocked to find out that Rusty belongs to one of the rich families in Jubilee—the same rich folks who scorn the rural families living on the surrounding mountainside, in spite of knowing nothing about them. With their community in the crosshairs, Cameron and Rusty will have to find a way to end the feuding and take down the human trafficking ring if they're to have a chance at happiness.

I have always loved this author's romantic suspense.  So I was eager to dive into Don't Back Down.  This is the first book in the Jubilee, Kentucky series.  This book is Cameron and Rusty's story.  I had a lot of fun reading this book.  The action and suspense had me riveted to the page.  I was kept guessing as to who was behind the trafficking. It didn't go in the direction I was expecting.

What I loved more than the overall mystery were the characters and the relationships in the book.  I adored Rusty and Cameron as a couple.  I loved their story and there was literally no angst or question that they would be together. They complimented each other.  I also  enjoyed Rusty's relationship with her family.  Her cousin did have to grow on me, but I was happy how her storyline turned out in the end.  I also loved Cameron's family.  His niece was adorable.  I loved how Rusty fit right in.   I can't wait to read the next book in the series! I highly recommend this one!

Blog Tour: Review and Excerpt of A Piece of My Heart by Sharon Sala

Author: Sharon Sala
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Date of publication: May 2017

She’s never had a home
Growing up in a troubled foster home, Mercy Dane knew she could never rely on anyone but herself. She’s used to giving her all to people who don’t give her a second glance, so when she races to Blessings, Georgia, to save the life of an accident victim, she’s flabbergasted when the grateful town opens its arms to her. She never dreamed she’d ever find family or friends—or a man who looks at her as if she hung the stars.

Until she finds peace in his arms
Police Chief Lon Pittman is getting restless living in sleepy little Blessings. But the day Mercy Dane roars into his life on the back of a motorcycle, practically daring him to pull her over, he’s lost. There’s something about Mercy’s tough-yet-vulnerable spirit that calls to Lon, and he will do anything in his power to make her realize that home isn’t just where the heart is—home is where their heart is.

A Piece of My Heart is the 4th book in the Blessings, Georgia series.  I have been a fan of this series from the beginning.  Each one of them can be read as a stand alone as they deal with different characters  and different story arcs.  For the most part, I enjoyed this one.  It's a sweet story about finding home and a place to belong.

I thought Lon and Mercy's love story was really sweet and definitely put a smile on my face. Although, it was a little fast for me.  There is a lot packed into this book and some of my favorite characters from the Curl Up and Dye salon make an appearance.  While not my favorite of the series ( that would be book #2), it was definitely entertaining and worth picking up.  For a sneak peek, check out the excerpt below!

 Excerpt:

Chapter 2

It was nearing daylight when her cell phone began to ring. She rolled over and grabbed it as she turned on the lamp. “Hello?”
“This is Mildred Starks from the National Rare Blood Registry. Am I speaking to Mercy Dane?”
“Yes,” Mercy said, as she threw back the covers and stood up.
“Ms. Dane, we have an emergency in your area. This is an unusual situation, and we’re asking something out of the ordinary. Can you respond directly to the hospital in need?”
“Yes. Where do I need to be?” she asked, as she began grabbing clothes.
“You still reside in Savannah, Georgia, and are there at this time?”
“Yes.”
“Perfect. There is a small town about an hour south of you called Blessings. There’s no chopper available to fly you there and no time to donate in Savannah and then have it transported. Do you have transportation to get yourself to Blessings?”
Now her hands were shaking as she realized the reality of someone’s life would lie partially in her ability to get there. “Yes. Where do I go?”
“The town is small. There’s only one hospital. I’m sending GPS directions to your phone. Time is crucial. Be safe and Godspeed.”
“On my way,” she said, and dropped the phone on the bed as she took her biker gear out of the closet. Within five minutes she was out the door, her helmet in one hand, keys in the other.
The sun was only a hint on the eastern horizon as she left the complex. According to her directions, she was to take I-16 west, then connect to I-95 south. She wasn’t far from a feeder road that would take her to I-516, which then turned into I-16, so she took that route.
It was early Christmas morning and traffic was sparse. Sunrise was minutes away when she finally hit I-16, and by that time she was flying. Every mile behind her put her closer to Blessings. It wasn’t the first time she’d been called upon to donate her blood, but it was the first time she’d been asked to go to the person in need. It amped the urgency to a fever pitch, making her part in it personal.
Once she hit I-95 southbound, the northbound lane was a black ribbon of flickering headlights, while she and the Harley became a two-wheeled version of earthbound flight.
She rode with single-minded focus, keeping an eye on the traffic while making sure she didn’t get caught in the draft of passing truckers. And when the new sun was just high enough in the east that she could see the landscape through which she was passing, the glimpses of houses led her to imagining what might be going on within the walls—because it was Christmas Day.
Surely joyful families were opening presents and eating breakfasts. She pictured turkeys already in the oven, pies already baked and lining sideboards and tables, and the dough for homemade hot rolls in big crockery bowls, covered and rising in a warm place on the counter. Unfortunately, that scene was nothing but her imagination because she’d never experienced anything like it. But the closer she got to Blessings, the more she realized there was no time to dwell on what she didn’t have. Today, it was what she did have—an RH negative blood type—that mattered most.
She’d been on the interstate forty-five minutes when she reached the exit that would take her to her destination. According to the directions she’d received, Blessings was less than fifteen miles ahead. The roar of the engine beneath her was all she could hear as she leaned slightly forward into the ride and accelerated.
And just as she rode past the city limits sign, she came upon a roadblock and a long line of cars blocking the highway with rescue vehicles up ahead. Her heart sank. She didn’t know it was the aftermath of the wreck that had caused the injuries to the person in need of her blood. But waiting around for permission to pass was not on her agenda.
She rolled out around the last car in line and kept moving forward. When she reached the accident site, she rode around two tow trucks, then took to the ditch to get around a couple of police cars and one highway patrol.
Although she couldn’t hear what they were saying, she saw them shouting and trying to wave her down. She’d never outright defied a lawman in her life, but these were extenuating circumstances, and so she kept moving until she was beyond the roadblock and heading into town.
She knew she was speeding, but traffic on Main Street was almost nonexistent. Her gut knotted when she heard a siren. One glance in her side mirror, and she saw the red and blue flashing lights of a cop car coming up behind her. Stopping to explain her situation could be the difference between someone living and dying.
Led by fear, she swerved off Main Street into a residential neighborhood and accelerated. It wasn’t enough. The cruiser was still behind her and closing the gap. Then she noticed an alley coming up on her right, swerved into it and sped up, trying to get back to Main. Everything in her peripheral vision was a blur, and the sound of the siren was fading as she shot back onto Main and then down to the far end of the street to the blue hospital sign with an arrow pointing east.
She followed the arrow, saw the hospital building straight ahead, and headed toward the entrance marked ER. She slid sideways as she came to a stop and then ran toward the entrance with her helmet in her hand and her hair in tangles.
It had taken an hour and five minutes to get there.
It was thirty-seven degrees, and she was sweating.

 There is always hope

As long as you can come home
Laurel Payne understands far too well what Jake is going through, after witnessing her late husband experience similar problems. She’s in no hurry to jump into another relationship with a complicated guy, but their attraction is undeniable—and perhaps exactly what both of them need.

My thoughts:

Saving Jake is the third book that takes place in the small town of Blessings Georgia.  While not my favorite of the three, I still enjoyed Jake and Laurel's story.  Jake has returned home a wounded veteran who is still feeling the effects of war.  He wants to settle down in his hometown and get on with his life.  Laurel is a widow raising her young daughter.  Her husband was a war hero who ended his own life.  The last thing she wants is to get involved with another soldier.

I did ultimately like Jake and Laurel's story.  Their fall into love was sweet if a little rushed.  The story is about healing and allowing oneself to rely on others to help the healing process. Both Laurel and Jake have a lot of healing to do and I could see why they would be drawn together. I was kind of hoping that Jake would seek out help for his PTSD nightmares because I could see them causing an issue in the future.

The thing that I didn't love about the story was the many point of view that were included.  I felt like it took away from the main couple's story. Especially in terms of Truman's storyline as I felt that really seemed like it wasn't essential to the story and could have been completely left out. There was also less of the townsfolk present. especially from the Curl Up and Dye crowd.  They were what I loved about the other books.  I still recommend this installment.  Visiting Blessings it like visiting with long lost friends.

Excerpt:

Dear Reader:
I welcome you to Blessings, Georgia, the best small town in the South.
No, there aren’t any secrets kept here, and yes, everybody knows your business, but when bad things happen, good people come to your rescue.
I grew up in a place like that—-a place everyone should live in at least once in their lives, but since that’s not possible, I’m offering the next best thing: stories about that way of life—-touching stories, funny stories, stories that will break your heart on one page and heal it on the next.
Count Your Blessings was the novella introducing my readers to the Georgia landscape.
You and Only You was the first full-length novel set in Blessings. It’s a story about the faithfulness of friends and family and what it means to be Southern to the core, as well as being a sweet love story to enjoy.
I’ll Stand By You was the second full-length novel. It’s a story about how people starting life off on the wrong foot can still find a way to live happy ever after.
Saving Jake is the next story, the one you’re holding in your hands. It’s a story that gets to the heart of what matters in life: redemption, forgiveness, and trust. It’s a story of the times, and yet timeless in its simplicity.
Pick up one of my stories and take a visit to Blessings with me.
You just might like it enough to stay.
See you between the pages,
Sharon Sala

Chapter 1
Thomas Wolfe once wrote, “You can never go home again.” Jacob Lorde never took the word of a stranger. He was on the way home, marking the passing of every mile with a war-weary soul. He needed a place to heal and Blessings, Georgia, the place where he grew up, was calling him.
He’d come back briefly over a year ago to bury his father, and the calm and peace of the place had stayed with him long after he’d returned to his unit. Only a couple of months later, an IED on one patrol too many earned him a long stint in the hospital and brought his time with the army to an end.
Now he was coming home to try and bury the soldier he’d been.
He wanted to be done with war.
He needed peace.
He needed the emotional security that comes with knowing where he belonged.
He needed that like he needed air to breathe, so when the Greyhound bus in which he was riding came around the curve and he saw the city-limit sign of Blessings gleaming in the early morning sunlight, his eyes blurred with sudden tears. He took the sunglasses from the pocket of his uniform and slipped them on, then held his breath as the bus began to stop.
The brakes squeaked. They needed oil.
Jake stood slowly, easing the stiffness in a still-healing leg, walked down the aisle, and then out into a sweet Georgia morning. He took a deep breath, smelling pine trees on the mountains around him and the scent of smoke from someone’s fireplace.
He was home.
The driver pulled his duffel bag from the luggage rack beneath the bus, shook his hand, and got back on board. The rest of the trip home was on Jake.

Review & interview: Curl up and Dye by Sharon Sala

We are pleased to welcome author Sharon Sala today for an interview.  She is promoting her book Curl Up and Dye. Enjoy it after my thoughts on the book.

Publisher: Sourcebooks Landmark
Date of publication: February 4, 2014

Wally Lamb meets Steel Magnolias in this story of LilyAnn Bronte, the Peachy-Keen Queen, which in Blessings, Georgia, was the epitome of success. After losing her fiance in the war in Iraq, her zest for life went into decline while added weight crept on. When a new guy arrives in town, LilyAnn embarks on a quest to remake herself from start to finish only to discover that love was always just right next-door.

I always know I'm going to get a good read when I pick up a book by this author.  Curl Up and Dye was such a fun book to read. Set in the small town of Blessings, Georgia, it is filled with fun characters and southern charm.  Like a lot of small towns the beauty shop is the center of gossip and town goings on.  Readers were first introduced to the town and shop in the prequel novella, Color Me Bad. While I didn't think it was necessary to read that first, it is definitely worth trying it out as well.

This story centers around LilyAnn and Mike.  LilyAnn lost her high school sweetheart to war 11 years ago and instead of moving on has let her life stop all together.  Mike has lived next to LilyAnn all his life and is her best friend.  He has also been in love with her since the 10th grade.  I just love reading stories about friends who finally admit they love each other.  It takes them a while, but their journey is so worth their sweet HEA.  LilyAnn makes a lot of changes and has to learn to love herself before she can see what is right in front of her.  Of course, the couple also gets a little help from the lovely ladies at the beauty shop.  Sometimes two people in love need a little push, right?

The book isn't all cozy and laughs.  Some of the people in Blessings carry some dark secrets.  But, then what small town doesn't have its secrets?  It looks like this is the first in a series.  I can't wait to visit the town of Blessings, Georgia again!  It's a quick, fun read and definitely one I recommend!

Autumn & Kari: Where do you come up with the ideas for your books?

Sharon: Almost every book I’ve written has been a dream first. I dream in color and with dialogue and plot. And I can plan what I want to dream about and then go to sleep and dream it. I thought everyone was like that and didn’t know anything different for years.

Autumn & Kari: What exciting projects are waiting in the wings?

Sharon: The Curl Up and Dye is set in a fictional town called Blessings, Georgia, and I am doing book 2 from that same location, with the same beauty shop and same town full of characters, plus a few new ones for that particular book.  It’s called…FAMILY SPECIAL… like the bargain a beauty shop might run giving a family a cut rate.  It’s a sweet story about two young people who struck a bargain to keep both of their little families together, and wound up falling in love in the process.

Autumn & Kari: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

Sharon: Hawkeye from Last of The Mohicans… because my daddy’s  side of the family is part Cherokee and I have always loved that story and setting.

Autumn & Kari: Just for fun, if you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

Sharon: A horse… for beauty, heart, and speed.

Teen Reads Week: My Lunatic Life

Author: Sharon Sala
Publisher: Bell Bridge Books  ( August 2011)

She plays for Team Spirit. High school senior Tara Luna's got all the usual teen problems: a new school, her attraction to a hunky guy, feuds with the Mean Girls, being regarded as an oddball outsider-PLUS she has psychic powers, a duo of protective, meddlesome ghosts AND an angry, threatening teen girl ghost who wants Tara to solve her murder-or else. Now you know why she calls this "my lunatic life.

I am a big fan of Sharon Sala's books.  I have read most of them. When I saw that she was delving into the YA genre, I was very curious.  My Lunatic Life is the first in a new series  that  features 17YO Tara Luna.  She is a psychic who has also has 2 ghosts who are her best friends.  She has moved around most of her life with her Uncle Pat who raised her.

Tara is a great character.  She is confident, headstrong and responsible.  Used to being the new girl, she doesn't let the teasing from the popular girls get to her.  She isn't afraid to stand up for herself. I loved the two ghosts that follow her around, especially, Millicent.  She adds some nice comic relief to the mix as she is constantly mixing up common slang words.  The mystery  of who kidnapped Bethany wasn't easy to figure out since the reader has to figure it out along with Tara through her visions.  That aspect is always a plus for me.

This was a great set up for the series. Since it did end in a cliffhanger, I look forward to the next one which I think is coming out soon.  I want to know more about Tara and her family "gift".  I only have 2 complaints about the book.  First, I hate the cover.  The outfit that she has on is not what Tara in the book would wear as she is more the jeans and T-shirt kind of girl.  I often wonder if the cover artists read the book first.  Thigh highs, really? The second thing is that I felt like the writing itself was not up to Ms. Sala's standards.  It was almost like it was "dumbed down".  I'm not sure if this was a deliberate attempt to try to appeal to the YA reader or not.  I hope the next book goes back to her level of writing that I know she capable of in her "adult" books.

In any case, I do recommend this one for all YA readers. It was a short book, so it can be read pretty quickly.   It is clean, so no sex, swearing or violence. I think Tara will be a favorite character in the future.

Blood Stains

Author: Sharon Sala
Publisher: Mira Books

At the reading of her father's will, Maria Slade receives shocking news—as a four-year-old, she'd witnessed her prostitute mother's murder and been taken into hiding by the well-meaning preacher who'd raised her as his own.
Maria remembers none of that. But now she's determined to flush her mother's killer out of hiding and discover the identity of her birth father. She heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she meets Detective Bodie Scott.

Empathizing with this beautiful woman looking to find out who she really is, he opens the decades-old case file. Their investigation leads them down a dangerous path, where no one is what they seem. Where a father does not want to be found. And a murderer has "like mother, like daughter" in mind for Maria.

Blood Stains (The Searchers #1) is the first book in a new series by Sharon Sala. The premise of the series is that 3 sisters find out at the reading of their father's will that most of their life has been a lie. Each sister leaves home to find out the truth of their real identity. Blood Stains was a pretty quick read. Bodie's character is strong willed and not afraid to go after what he wants, especially when it comes to Maria. I really believed his side of the romance, but I wasn't too sold on Maria's side. While I liked her character, I didn't buy her falling for Brodie.

This is supposed to be a romantic suspense, but the suspense part wasn't really there. You know who the killer is pretty early on and the "twist" at the end was pretty apparent halfway through the book. The peripheral characters were interesting and helped round out the story. I do look forward to reading the other 2 books in the series. There are hints to their plots in this one. If you are a fan of Ms. Sala's work, pick this one up. While it isn't her best work, you will probably enjoy it. 3 out of 5 stars

Throwback Thursday - Annie and the Outlaw

Author: Sharon Sala
First published in 1994 by Silhouette Books

Rejected by Hell for one final deed of kindness, outlaw Gabriel Donner is given a second chance by God to make it into Heaven. The price? To spend the next 150 years on Earth righting the wrongs he's done. His task is long and lonely; but just as his time is almost up, he rescues the one woman who could make him want to stay on Earth, Annie Laurie O'Brien. Annie, however, has a deadly secret of her own, and making it all work out in the end literally takes an act of God.

This is not in active print anymore, so you will probably have to hit up the used books stores or get it from the library like I did. So, why am I featuring it on Throwback Thursday? I think it is worth seeking out if you are looking for earlier works by Sharon Sala. This is a really touching story about redemption, faith and hope. Gabriel Donner has been wandering the earth for the past 150 years trying to make up for a checkered past. His last mission comes to him in the form of Annie who is dying, and doesn't believe in God and has lost her faith. Their love story is emotional, strong and very believable. The book is very moving and sucks you right in from the beginning. I do warn you, I cried while reading this; both sad and happy tears. I gave it 4 stars, but only because some of the references did date the book a little. See if you can find it. I guarantee you will like it!

Deadlier Than Male (Anthology)

Published: Harlequin (Silhouette) Coming in November 2010
Authors: Sharon Sala and Colleen Thompson

The Fiercest Heart by New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author SHARON SALA

Torn apart years ago by a family feud and a deadly accident, high school sweethearts Haley and Mack reunite when Haley returns to town. But someone doesn’t want them together and will do anything to keep them apart. Anything…

Lethal Lessons by COLLEEN THOMPSON

One of Mara’s students is troubled by her mother’s mysterious death. Despite warnings that the girl’s father, Adam, is a danger, Mara sees only a handsome, caring protector. Will she uncover the truth before it’s too late?

One thing I love about anthologies is that they are great for times when you want something quick and not too heavy. I have always enjoyed Ms. Sala’s novellas and she didn’t disappoint. Her story, The Fiercest Heart, was pretty good and fairly believable. I liked the characters and the ending was sweet. The twist was easy to call, but how much suspense can you really build up in 120 pages? So 3 stars for Ms. Sala.

The second story in the book, Lethal Lessons, wasn’t as good. I kept having the feeling that I was missing key information. The time jumps in the story were a bit disorienting and left out a lot of needed filler. I think this novella had the potential to make a great longer book. Too much was left out to make it a truly enjoyable short story. 2 stars for this one.

Overall, if you are looking for something light and quick, pick this one up. It will entertain you.
