My thoughts:

Grammie and Pupa's House is an adorable children's book that follows the adventures of little Daisy as she spends a day with her grandparents.  From gardening and putting up the US flag on the flag pole to  learning the fine art of making tea and cooking with Grammie, Daisy's day is full of fun and adventure.  As an adult, this story brought back fond memories of time I used to spend at my grandparents house every summer when I was little.  This is a wonderful story and would be a great way to talk you your own children about their grandparents and the adventures they have when they visit.  The illustrations are colorful and packed with many things for children to look at.  If my kids were still small, I would definitely get this for them.

Meet the Author:

I was born in a small New England town. Growing up I lived just two houses away from my grandparents, and spent countless days hanging out with Grammie and Pupa playing games and gardening. I loved flowers, and still do. I would roam the fields picking wild Lupine, Queen Anne's Lace, and, of course, Daisies. This book is a legacy to my grandparents, a way of saying thank you for the sweet memories. May you make sweet memories with your little ones as you read this book with them.

My Thoughts:

I Can't Wait to Love You Forever is an adorable book that is perfect for any child who is anticipating a younger sibling.  The story follows a little boy who likes to play a fun game with his mom.  He pretends to be a special delivery package.  Each time she "opens" the package, she remarks at how he is such a big boy and she can't wait to love him forever.  She reminds him that he was once a baby, but now he is a big boy.  In playing this game leading up to the birth of his new sibling, she is helping to prep him for his new role as a big brother.  I would have loved a book like this for my daughter when she was about to become a big sister.  Along with a sweet story, the illustrations are colorful and engaging.  I highly recommend this one.

Blog Tour: Review of Edward and Annie by Caryn Rivadeneira

Author: Caryn Rivadeneira
Illustrator:  Katy Tanis
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Publication Date: March 1, 2022
Hardcover: 32 pages

Join famous penguins, Edward and Annie, the viral sensations, as they waddle through Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium in this funny and surprising adventure story.

When no one comes to visit the aquarium, penguin pair Edward and Annie wonder, Where did everyone go? This colorful romp through Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium from author Caryn Rivadeneira takes children and their families on an adventure of wonder through the marine world. As Edward and Annie explore the unknown parts of their aquarium home and meet the other wonderfully strange creatures living there, these penguin friends discover that the world is much bigger and more interesting than they ever knew. After much excitement and many surprises, they return to the penguin habitat for the best end to any day: a cozy rest at home.
Edward and Annie teaches 4 to 8-year-olds that
  • great discoveries and new friends can come from life’s biggest changes
  • the best adventures start with trying something new
  • a community is made of individuals who are each different, beautiful, and amazing
In this funny read-aloud picture book, children will
  • meet the real-life rockhopper penguins, Edward and Annie, who made a splash on social media
  • learn about the other sea animals that live at Shedd Aquarium, including Wellington the penguin and Annik the baby beluga
  • have fun learning fascinating science facts during family reading time or as part of preschool and elementary STEM lessons in marine biology
  • laugh at the penguins’ curious questions and silly antics
Your family will fall in love with these sweet, energetic penguins as together you discover that the world is a wonderful and surprising place–a place that is even better when explored with a friend by your side!

My Thoughts:

Edward and Annie is an adorable book about two of the real life penguins from the Lake Michigan Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.  During the 2020 pandemic shut down, the caretakers at the aquarium took these two as well as other penguins on adventures throughout the aquarium in order to provide enrichment activities and exercise.  The Shedd Aquarium has short videos of these adventures on YouTube.  I highly recommend looking for them.  They are too adorable.

In this book, we follow both Annie and Edward, as well as their caregiver Kai, as they explore and meet new friends. Throughout the adventure, Annie remarks that things are different.  Edward helps her learn that different doesn't always mean a bad thing.  Different can be exciting and fun.  At the end of the book, there is a section explaining about the real aquarium and how the animals are cared for.  The book is beautifully illustrated with colorful drawings that will give young readers a lot to look at and explore.  I highly recommend this one.  It would be a wonderful addition to any library.

About the Author and Illustrator

Caryn Rivadeneira writes stories that spark wonder, fuel curiosity, and craft worlds that help kids find their place in this one. She is the author of books for children and adults, including the Moonbeam Award–winning Helper Hounds series, Grit and Grace: Heroic Women of the Bible, Edward and Annie: A Penguin Adventure, and Saints of Feather and Fang: How the Animals We Love and Fear Connect Us to God. Caryn lives in the western suburbs of Chicago with her husband, three kids, and two rescued pit bulls.

Blog Tour: Reviews of Slothy Claus by Jodie Shepherd and Night Night, Angel by Amy Parker

Author: Jodie Shepherd
Illustrator: MacKanzie Haley
Publisher: Tommy Nelson

What will children do when a sluggish Slothy Claus doesn’t make it to their home in time for Christmas morning? This charming story helps kids learn that Christmas is about more than just presents under the tree.
Slothy Claus has lots of presents for good boys and girls this year, but how is this notoriously lethargic animal supposed to travel all around the world in just one night? You guessed it! Slothy takes his sweet time, and when kids wake up to empty stockings and bare trees, it feels like Christmas is ruined! How will they ever find happiness without their chocolates and toys?

Slothy Claus is equal parts humorous and heartwarming. Children ages 4 to 8 will
  • learn that the joy of Christmas doesn’t come from material things but from the love between family and friends
  • enjoy the delightfully funny one-of-a-kind artwork
  • love the classic rhyme that will fill your own family’s Christmas with love, laughter, and a spirit of giving
Slothy Claus concludes with a summer scene complete with flip flops and a barbecue when Slothy Claus finally flies down in his sleigh to deliver gift after gift–for a special celebration of Christmas in July. With a bright, glittery cover, this fun picture book is the perfect gift for advent or Christmas.

My thoughts:

Slothy Claus is an adorable story about a very slow sloth who is tasked with bringing gifts to children on Christmas Eve.  He doesn't quite make it and the kids wake up with nothing under the tree.  After being upset, they begin to realize what the season really means and that they feel blessed with their friends and family.  Slothy does finally show up about 6 months later.  The illustrations are adorable and vibrant.  This is such a cute story and one I would have read to my kids when they were small.

Author: Amy Parker
Illustrator: Virginia Allyn
Publisher: Tommy Nelson

‘Tis the season for joy! Celebrate the family fun and season’s blessings of Christmas with a young arctic fox as your family remembers that Jesus is the best gift of all. Amy Parker’s delightful rhymes and Virginia Allyn’s sweet illustrations make Night Night, Angel the perfect read-aloud for toddlers and preschoolers enjoying the Christmas season.

Little fox loves all the excitement that Christmas brings to the forest: making creative presents, placing the star on the tree, and making sure she is spotlight-ready for the big Christmas play. But soon she realizes that the perfect gift has already been given through the baby who arrived on the first Christmas night!
As the fourth seasonal title in the hugely successful Night Night bedtime storybook brand, this Christmas board book
  • gives families a fun way to say goodnight during the Advent season
  • celebrates the special moments of family holiday activities
  • gently reminds children that Baby Jesus is the reason for the season
The Christmas theme and sparkling cover make Night Night, Angel perfect for an Advent gift, stocking stuffer, or Christmas morning surprise from parents, grandparents, Sunday school teachers, and friends. Your little angel will be ready to snuggle in for the night as together you celebrate the many blessings of Christmas!

My thoughts:

Night Night Angel is a board book that follows woodland creatures as they get ready for Christmas.  IT has colorfully illustrated scenes  that will definitely keep the attention of any young child.  There is a lot to discover on each page.  The story talks about the true meaning of Christmas. Each page ends with saying Night Night to something on the page.  This is a really cute story and one that is perfect for being used as a bedtime story.

Banned Books Week: A Light in the Attic

Author: Shel Silverstein
Publisher:  Harpercollins Childrens Books ( first published October 7th 1981)

Last night while I lay thinking here
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long And sang their same old Whatif song:

Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?...

Here in the attic of Shel Silverstein you will find Backward Bill, Sour Face Ann, the Meehoo with an Exactlywatt, and the Polar Bear in the Frigidaire. You will talk with Broiled Face, and find out what happens when Somebody steals your knees, you get caught by the Quick-Digesting Gink, a Mountain snores, and They Put a Brassiere on the Camel.

From the creator of the beloved poetry collections "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "Falling Up", here is another wondrous book of poems and drawings.

When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, one of the first things I bought for her was the entire Shel Silverstein collection in hardcover.  I loved these books as a child.  I can still remember my mother reading them to me before bed.  I have never forgotten them and couldn't wait to share them with my kids. Mr. Silverstein had quite an imagination and has created a wonderful collection of funny and memorable poems.  The one above in the synopsis is just a taste.  Along with the poems, he has sprinkled illustrations throughout the book that only help to fuel the child's imagination.  One of my favorites is "Backward Bill".  My kids love "Something Missing". What kid wouldn't love a poem about a man who forgets to put on his pants?

This was one of the most frequently challenged books of the 90s.  A little research showed that one of the poems, "How Not To Have To Dry The Dishes" was thought by parents to promote disobedience and uncleanliness.  It has also been challenged for supernatural themes and for some of the illustrations.  Read it for yourself and decide.
