Review: The Haunting of Payne's Hollow by Kelley Armstrong

Author: Kelley Armstrong
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: October 2025

When Samantha Payne’s grandfather dies, she figures she won’t even get a mention in the will. After all, she hasn’t seen him in fourteen years, not since her father took his own life after being accused of murdering a child at their lakefront cottage. Her grandfather always insisted her father was innocent, despite Sam having caught him burying the child’s body, his clothing streaked with blood.

But when she does attend the reading of the will at the behest of her aunt, she discovers that her grandfather left her the very valuable lakefront property where the family cottage sits. There’s one catch: Sam needs to stay in the cottage for a month. To finally face the fact she was wrong and her father was innocent, in her grandfather's words.

Traveling to Paynes Hollow, Sam is faced with the realities of her childhood and the secrets kept hidden in the shadows of her memories. When her aunt goes missing a couple days into their stay, Sam begins to question everything again. Plagued by nightmares and paranoia, she begins hearing sounds in the forest and seeing shapes crawling from the water as the rippling waves of the lake promise something unspeakably dark lurking just below their surface.

In The Haunting of Payne's Hollow, Sam's grandfather has died and left his property to her.  The catch is that she has to live there for a month without leaving the property.  She soon becomes entangled in solving what really happened with her father years before.  Her aunt disappears and she begins to have nightmares and questioning everything she is seeing.

This book was just what I needed for the spooky season.  The atmosphere was dark and sinister. There were a lot of creepy scenes  I loved the story of the hollow and the mystery that surrounded it. It also touched a bit on the legend of Sleepy Hollow and the headless horseman. The characters were interesting and I was rooting for Sam.  There was a big twist in the end that I didn't see coming.  I also love that as the reader I didn't know who to trust.  I highly recommend this one.

Chapter 1

Jessica let the mental exhaustion take hold for a minute, then shook it off. Eighteen months to go. If she survived that, she’d be a lawyer and hopefully move from the reception desk to the courtroom.

She settled into her chair. “I’m back,” she called to her boss. Linda owned the one person firm housed in a quaint old home turned law office in downtown El Paso. Jessica ran her fingers across the antique, inlaid cherry desk. She’d started here less than a year ago, but she already loved this place.

“Hey, how was the test?” Linda strode into the room and plopped down in front of her. A perfect-fitting Armani suit and a blonde blowout softened the toughness shining through Linda’s blue eyes. The creases in her face told the world she’d faced a few battles.

“Tough, but I’m pretty sure I passed,” Jessica said.

Linda smiled, then cocked her head, a question appearing in her eyes. “I bet your father would be proud.”

Jessica bristled, the ache returning to her shoulders and prickles of tension running across her skin. Linda hadn’t brought up Jessica’s dad since the first time they met.

Jessica hated how her father’s conviction for destroying evidence in a drug case shaded her pending law career. He’d been El Paso’s district attorney at the time. That embarrassment held Jessica back for too many years. She’d gotten past it, mostly, especially since her father’s passing.

She shrugged her shoulders in response then willfully changed the subject. “Has it been quiet here?”

“Surprisingly so. But who knows what will walk in the door next?” Linda glanced out the large window as if she expected to see someone trotting up the steps. She turned back to Jessica. “Do you have any new projects on the horizon? You know, human remains under a pecan tree or a missing heiress?”

Jessica’s reputation for finding things, missing people, murderers, had ratcheted up since she started working with Linda. She shook her head. “No more wild cases for me. I need to keep my head down and finish school. I keep getting waylaid by these other projects. It’s too hard to focus on law school and my work here when I’m off solving someone else’s mystery.”

Linda studied Jessica. “Maybe, but I think you like striking out on your own, solving someone’s problem, and coming back a hero. Practicing law is so different than that. It’s tedious and requires an extraordinary amount of patience while the wheels of justice turn.”

Did Linda doubt her aspirations? Not every case would be exciting, but lately, she could use a little less excitement in her life.

“Perhaps,” Jessica said. “But you’re a lot less likely to be confronted by people pointing guns at you or burning down the house you’re trapped in.”

“True. At least most of the time.”

Jessica wondered about her answer. “Is that why you left the police force and became an attorney?” She had heard about Linda’s first career from Jaime Castro, a lieutenant on the El Paso police force and one of her oldest friends. Based on the admiration in his voice, Linda had excelled as a police officer.

“Not really.” Linda’s gaze softened, as if remembering something from long ago. “The problem with police work is that you don’t get to choose your cases. When they don’t seem fair, it becomes hard to put your heart into the job.”

Jessica waited for an explanation. What kind of case would make someone as tough as Linda walk away? For a minute, Jessica thought she would say more. But instead, her boss changed the subject. “Why don’t we go over the upcoming cases?”

When they finished, Linda headed back to her office. Jessica had just turned to her computer when she spied someone coming toward the door. Someone she did not want to see.

Tomás Garcia loped up the steps and opened the door before Jessica could escape. If only her test had taken longer.

“Hi, Jessica. It’s good to see you.” He sat in the chair Linda had just vacated as if he owned the place.

He didn’t. And when he’d tracked her down at a party a few weeks ago, she’d told him she didn’t want to see him again. Yet here he sat. The audacity of rich men never failed to surprise her.

“Why are you here?” She threw all the surliness she could muster into her voice.

“Is that any way to treat a potential client?”

“Tomás, I made it clear that I would never work with you again. You do remember you tried to kill me the last time.” And the time before that, she’d almost died at the hands of someone he’d forgotten to tell her dealt drugs.

“I wouldn’t have killed you. I am not a murderer. I was just angry. I thought you had taken something I considered mine.”

“That something was a human being, and she didn’t want to be with you. You’ve lost your chance with me.”

He steepled his fingers and stared across the desk. “We have a long history, and we’ve worked well together in the past.” Arrogance wafted off him like a bad smell.

Jessica scanned her desk for something to throw at him or stab him with. Life was way too short to tolerate assholes like this.

He held his hands up in surrender, as if he could read her mind. “You’re right. That last time was horrible. I shouldn’t have done so many of the things I did then. I’m sorry. I promise I’m a different man now. And I need your help.”

Fire lit in her veins. She had already taken too many chances with Tomás. Jessica took a deep breath and tried to keep from spitting at him. “You need to leave. There is no way in hell you’ve changed enough in the last few years for me to consider working for you.” She wouldn’t physically attack him, but she tried her best to stare daggers into his soul.

“Please. Let me explain. I’m married to a wonderful woman now. We have a son, and he’s the most important thing in my life. Becoming a father changes a person. I’m a much better man today. Also, I lost my mother a year ago, and I’m worried about losing my father. That’s what I need to talk to you about.”

Of course, curiosity gnawed at her, but it wasn’t enough. She loathed this man.

“You do realize that waltzing in here expecting me to listen to you after I’ve already told you no means you’re still the entitled jerk you’ve always been.”

“I’m not. I swear. Please, just hear me out. I think someone is trying to kill my father.”

“So. Go to the police.”

“I have, but I can’t get anywhere with them. My dad remarried just a few months after my mom died. His new wife has completely denied me access to him.”

“Didn’t you hate your dad? How many times have you told me you wanted to build an empire even bigger than his? Maybe he just doesn’t want to see you.”

“Things are different now. After…after what happened with Doraliz, I had to change. I wasn’t a man I could be proud of, and I certainly wasn’t a son my mother could respect. But she didn’t give up on me. Instead, she helped me see what a terrible person I’d become and gave me a way to recover.”

“Whatever. I don’t care, and I want you to leave.” Jessica refused to buy his rich boy sob story. He should have ended up in jail.

He leaned forward, hands on his knees, blue eyes staring her down, probably his attempt at acting earnest. “I know how selfish and hurtful and conceited I was. I know, and I hate that version of myself. I understand why you don’t want to work with me, but my father’s life is on the line. You have a knack for solving mysteries. I’ve seen you do it. I need your help to save my father.”

“It’s not going to happen. And if you don’t leave, I’ll call the cops.” Jessica picked up her phone and hit the timer, then turned it to face him. “You’ve got sixty seconds to get out of this office.”

Exasperation crossed Tomás’s features. He sighed and started to say something. Then he shut his mouth, rose, and walked out the door. She hoped she’d never see him again.

Linda emerged the minute he left. From the look on her face, she’d heard the conversation.

“I didn’t know you had such a long, involved relationship with Mr. Garcia.” Linda sat in the probably still warm chair.

“Yeah. Unfortunately.” Jessica said nothing more, hoping Linda would drop it. She preferred to avoid the whole sordid tale.

Linda watched Jessica for a long moment but didn’t press her for more information. “You do know that you’re always welcome to work on outside cases. Soon enough you’ll have your own legal cases.”

“I look forward to that, but not with him.”

“Fine. You should head home early tonight. Go celebrate finishing midterms with that handsome husband of yours.”

“Thanks.” She did want to celebrate, although she’d stayed up so late cramming, she’d require a second wind to do anything other than crawl into bed. Or maybe a shot or two of tequila to help her forget torts. And Tomás’s visit.

Readers who enjoy found family and holiday fun will will fall for Mr. Merry Ex-Mas by Carolina Jax, a steamy, small town, enemies to lovers, second chance romance.

But when the Starlight Bay Town Board pairs me with that ex, the one with charm for days and a smirk to match, to plan the biggest Christmas event of the year, my plan to avoid him begins to unravel.
Danny Love is chaos in a hoodie, yet he’s somehow the only person who ever made me feel seen, when he wasn’t teasing me or driving me absolutely insane. Now we're stuck together planning a Christmas Gala and dodging mistletoe balls, and it turns out, the spark between us never actually fizzled. It just waited for the moment we both might be brave enough to try, again.
Can holiday magic help his ‘winging it’ personality and my ‘google calendar is my bible’ attitude make it work a second time?

“How about a shot?ˮ
He raises a brow and puts his hands on his hips. “How bad we talking?ˮ
“You know the Christmas Gala youʼre sponsoring and your in-house event rep is handling?ˮ He nods. “The Starlight Bay Town Board picked a teacher to assist. And Iʼm that teacher.ˮ
He whistles but has a shit-eating grin. “So, itʼs bad.ˮ He grabs four shot glasses and lines them up, then grabs the bottle of Jameson, filling all four. He pushes two forward, then grabs one. We tap glasses and down it, the burn making me feel slightly better.
“Does she know?ˮ
“Oh, she knows.ˮ I slam the second shot. “I just came from seeing her at the school auditorium.ˮ
“Howʼd that go?ˮ
I shake my head. “Sheʼs still Sadie. Color-coded, clipboard-carrying, and convinced Iʼm here to sabotage her centerpiece arrangements.ˮ
“Seems to be a specialty of yours.ˮ
“Causing chaos is my love language.ˮ
Matt laughs and pours one more shot. “You mean your ‘desperately trying not to be in loveʼ
language?ˮ
“Excuse me. Iʼll have you know I am very successfully not in love with her.ˮ
“You're so full of shit.ˮ
I shrug, then do the third shot, the fire sitting low in my stomach. “I canʼt help it if I remember
everything she says, and still think about how good she looks when sheʼs mad.ˮ I smile. “I pushed her buttons on purpose today to see what would happen.ˮ
He scoffs. “Still trying to get a blow job after a fight, huh?ˮ
I snicker. “I should have never told you that.ˮ I spin the empty shot glass, and my mind reverts to every fight I picked on purpose just so she would show me some passion.
“Mhmm. Totally not in love. You sound like a movie side character who dies of unresolved tension.ˮ
I roll my eyes. “Youʼre no help.ˮ
“Listen, Iʼm the guy who watched his high-school sweetheart waltz back into his winery with her fiancé to plan their wedding and still managed to marry her, so if anyone gets being the side character at first, I do.ˮ
“Yeah, well, Sadieʼs not exactly giving me the green light. In fact, her words were ‘weʼre not
anything.ʼ So, pretty sure sheʼs over me.ˮ
“Maybe. Or maybe sheʼs scared youʼre not joking this time.ˮ
I pause, letting out a breath. “I wasnʼt joking then.ˮ
“I know you werenʼt, but she didn't, and that was the problem. Youʼre not a kid, Danny. You donʼt have to pull her ponytail to get her attention.ˮ
“I did if I wanted a blow job.ˮ I laugh, then sober. “Sheʼs got this whole world mapped out—timelines, goals, perfect damn centerpieces. And Iʼm just… me.ˮ

“Yeah, youʼre you. The guy whoʼs funny, loyal, great with kids, and probably the only person on earth who could balance her out when she finally lets go.ˮ
“You really think that?ˮ
“Only because my fiancé tells me I have to be nice to you.ˮ I flip him off, and he laughs. “But Sadie thinks that, too. She just doesnʼt want to admit it, even if you're holding a lighter to her perfectly timed schedule.ˮ
I huff a laugh and stand. “Thanks for the drink. And for the talk. I'll catch ya tomorrow.ˮ
I walk out, remembering how it felt to have her hand pushed against my chest, kissing me like she didnʼt want to want me but couldn't resist me either.
That was the night I realized I might actually love Sadie Johnson.
And today showed me I never stopped. Now, I just have to figure out how to get her to see what Iʼve always known. We werenʼt perfect on paper, and we definitely didnʼt make sense together, but when it was just me and her with no schedule between us, we were something worth fighting for.

When Shannon gets engaged, her beloved mom, Cindy, is the first person she wants to tell—and the last. Cindy’s engaged, too, and has already hinted at a double wedding. The image of a synchronized bouquet toss with her mom fills Shannon with horror. She’ll keep her engagement a secret until Cindy’s I-dos are done.

Victoria has never been proper enough for her mother, Ava, so she stopped trying. She lives on her own terms and amuses herself by pushing Ava’s buttons. Ava loves but doesn’t understand her stuntwoman daughter. When a movie-set mishap brings Victoria home, Ava longs to finally connect.

Chance brings the four women together at a wedding venue, where a shocking secret comes tumbling out. Twenty-four years ago, desperate teenager Cindy chose wealthy Ava to adopt her baby—then changed her mind at the very last second. The loss rocked Ava’s world, leaving her unable to open her heart to the daughter she did adopt, Victoria. As Shannon and Victoria deal with the fallout from the decisions their mothers made, they wrestle with whether who they are is different than who they might have become.

Excerpt:

How does the horse look?

Victoria Rogers pressed her good arm to her very bruised, almost broken ribs. “Dad, don’t,” she said, trying to stay as still as possible. “You can’t be funny. It already hurts to breathe. It wasn’t a horse.”

Her father frowned. “I was told you were thrown off a horse.” “I was thrown out of a truck.”

“Then how’d you get the black eyes?”

“The ground was a little bit pissy when I hit it and punched me back.”

There wasn’t a part of her that didn’t hurt. The good news was that now that the medical staff had determined she didn’t have a head injury, they were going to give her drugs to help with the pain. She’d already said she didn’t want any of that weak-ass pill stuff. She wanted a nurse to give her a shot of something that would work instantly and let her rest. Because in addition to the bruised ribs, requisite scrapes and contusions, she had a broken left leg and a sprained wrist. Her previously dislocated shoulder also throbbed, but that was kind of the least of it.

As she lay in her hospital bed, feeling like death on a tortilla, she had the thought that maybe stunt work wasn’t for her. Injuries came with the job, but this was the third time in five years she’d landed in the hospital. The first time she’d messed up, so that was on her, but the other two had just been plain bad luck. The incident with the truck had come about because one of the tires had blown, causing the however many ton vehicle to jump the curb—an action that had sent her flying up and over the side. Gravity, being the bitch it was, had flung her onto the sidewalk. Hence the injuries.

Her father studied her, his brows drawn together in concern. “None of this makes me happy,” he told her.

The incongruous statement nearly made her laugh. She remembered—just in time—that her ribs wouldn’t appreciate the subsequent movement and they would punish her big-time.

“Today isn’t my favorite day either,” she admitted, trying not to groan. “I didn’t wake up with the thought that I should try to get thrown out of the back of a pickup.” Although technically getting thrown out of the truck had been the stunt. Just not when it had happened and without warning or a plan.

“I’m worried,” her father told her.

“I’ll be fine.”

“This time.”

She winced, and not from pain. “Now you sound like Mom.”

Her father, a handsome man only a few months from his sixtieth birthday, brightened. “Thank you, Victoria. That’s such a nice thing to say.”

Given her weakened condition, she let that comment slide. Honestly she didn’t have the strength to deal with it right now, even though she knew her father understood exactly what she’d been saying. He was only pretending to not get it.

“If you’re going to act like that, you should go,” she said, then amended what could be construed as a catty comment into something more kind. Mostly because she only had the emotional energy not to get along with one of her parents, and her mother had already claimed that prize. “Besides, they’ll be bringing my drugs any second. I plan to surrender to sleep, so I’m not going to be very conversational.”

As if to prove her point, one of the nurses walked in with a syringe. “Ready to feel better?” he asked cheerfully.

“Yes, and let me say, you’re my favorite person ever.”

He winked. “I get that all the time.”

He slowly injected whatever the medication was into her IV. Victoria drew in a shallow breath as she waited to feel that first blurring of the edges of the pain. Modern medicine was a miracle she intended to embrace.

The nurse left. Milton took her good hand in his.

“I’ll let you rest,” he told her. “But I’ll be back later tonight.” He squeezed her fingers. “Tomorrow, when you’re released, I’m taking you home.”

Ugh. Victoria knew that her father wasn’t talking about the pretty condo he’d bought her when she’d turned twenty-one. Instead he meant the house where she’d grown up. The one where her mother still resided.

“I don’t need to move back,” she protested, feeling the first telltale easing of the pain. “I have a few bumps and bruises.”

“Along with a broken leg. And what about your ribs? You can barely move without wincing.”

“I have zero pain tolerance. I’m a total wimp.”

He frowned. “You’re tough and stoic. If you’re showing signs of pain, it’s bad. You’ll stay with your mother and me until you’re well enough to be on your own.” He pointed at her. “I mean it, Victoria. You don’t get a vote.”

Her father was rarely stern with her, so his sharp tone warned her he wasn’t kidding. And she knew from twenty-four years of experience that arguing with the man would get her nowhere. Milton didn’t take a stand very often, but when he did, he was the immovable object.

“I wish you loved me less,” she murmured, feeling a little floaty and stumbling over her words. “Okay, I feel drugs. Let me enjoy the experience of breathing without, you know, wanting to die.”

Oh, baby girl. You’ve always been difficult.”

“I know. It’s one of my best qualities.” Her eyes drifted closed. “Love you, Dad.”

“Love you more.” He kissed her cheek. “I’ll see you tonight.”

“Come alone.”

His soft chuckle was the last thing she heard.

Review: Vixen's Guide to Christmas by Chelle Sloan

Author: Chelle Sloan
Publication Date: November 2025

GUIDE TO LOVE (& CHRISTMAS) RULE #27: Make your list. Check it twice. Because Santa knows how naughty you've been.

I haven't written a letter to Santa since I was eight years old, but maybe this year I need to.

Dear Santa,
I promise, no matter what "he" told you, I've been good this year.
I didn't know he was my business rival when I slept with him.
I didn't know he hated me. Though, he didn't know it either.
And I didn't know that we would get snowed-in together in the mountains. In one hotel room. With one bed.
Anything that has been deemed naughty by the infuriatingly sexy man is accidental.
But maybe look into him. You know. To check it twice and all.
Signed, an apparent Vixen

My thoughts:

Vixen's Guide to Christmas is a cute forced proximity, rivals to lovers romance.  Kat and Grayson meet at a speed dating/trivia night.  It's an instant connection but little do they know they are rivals in the business world.  After what they are sure is a one night stand, they end up at the same hotel competing for a contract and having to share a hotel room.

As I said, thus was a cute and steamy romance.  I loved the chemistry between Kat and Grayson.  They were really perfect for each other.  I also really enjoyed how Grayson helped Kat figure out how to bring together the two sides of herself.  Watching Grayson convince Kat that they belonged together was an enjoyable time.  It's a fairy quick read, but it's one worth checking out.  I do recommend it.

But something about him feels dangerously real.

Daniel:
Something about her captured my attention the moment I met her.
I knew I was in trouble.
Controlled and always alone—that’s who I’ve been.
But I said yes before I could stop myself.
Because moving into her tea-scented, music-filled home was the only way I could be close to her.
She’s sunshine and sharp edges. She hums while stirring honey into her cup and smiles through pain like it’s nothing.
This was supposed to be pretend.
But with every stolen glance and late-night conversation, the line between real and fake keeps slipping.
She doesn’t believe in love.
I never thought it was possible.
But living with her is rewriting everything I thought I knew—
And walking away might not be an option.

“We. Are. Done.ˮ I say, shouting at him, repeating his words. “I thought I couldnʼt live without you but turns out that I can. It may take years for my heart to heal and learn how to live without you, but it will learn,ˮ I retort, exhaling, “baby steps.ˮ I mutter to myself, something Iʼve been reminding myself of lately. I appreciate everything you did with Teni, but we have come to the end of our road, and we must say goodbye. You need not worry. Iʼll be leaving Chicago soon, so our paths will never cross again.ˮ I solemnly state. His face creased into a deep frown, and I noticed the worry lines etched on his brow.
“Anu, please forgive me; give me another chanceˮ His pleading words fell on deaf ears as I scoffed at him. Averting eye contact, I recoiled from his touch and noticed the disappointment on his face, but right now I choose me first. A gentle touch of his is all it takes to make me agree to all his terms, even when I know I should run to the hills.
“What we had was all or nothingˮ I pause. “We had all beforeˮ I catch my breath for a moment “Now there is nothing. Thereʼs no halfway or in between.ˮ I pause from my vehement words and emotions “I donʼt hate you, we had a good time, and Iʼve mentally accepted my dadʼs offer, it all worked out for the bestˮ I say in a calm voice, and a shrug, maintaining my defiance stance with a straight face even as I shatter inside. He frowns at me.
“You canʼt do that,ˮ he shouts in my face
“Pretty sure I can,ˮ I challenge in a dulcet tone, a stark contrast to his shouts "Last I checked, I have every right to make a decision for myself.ˮ
“You canʼt because you love me, and I love youˮ his voice heated
“Sometimes, love isnʼt enough,ˮ I answer succinctly
“It is for us Anu.ˮ He tries to touch me, and I shriek away from him. Exasperation is clear on him.
“What can I do, Anu to earn your forgiveness? Please tell me. Iʼll do anything. Tell me what to doˮ he asks, and I hear the plea in his voice, yet it all upsets me rather than appease me.
“If you want my goddamn forgiveness, you will be on your fucking knees, and since we both know you are too proud for that, you can stop asking me for another chance, We. Are. Overˮ I vehemently state and turn to leave. He forcefully grabs me, and I watch him slide to his knees.
Daniel on his knees, has me in freeze mode.
“I want your forgiveness and another chanceˮ his voice is gentle. Iʼm frozen in place with widen eyes probably like a crazy meme, I was certain Daniel would never get on his knees but here he is before me.

Review: The Accidental Christmas by Lori Foster

Author: Lori Foster
Date of publication:

He came to Cannon Beach to escape Christmas. She came seeking safety. Neither expected to find love.

In December, retired police officer Hendrix Becker shuts down his quiet RV park on the Oregon coast to disappear from the world. Haunted by a tragic Christmas past, solitude has become his only refuge.

But this year, someone stays behind.

Josephine Collins, with her young son, has nowhere else to go when danger from her past resurfaces.

Against his instincts, Hendrix lets them stay. What begins as a tense arrangement slowly softens as Josephine’s courage and her son’s laughter begin to penetrate the ice around his heart. As trust builds, so does something deeper—something neither of them expected.

But Josephine's past isn't done with her yet. And when the threat gets too close, Hendrix must confront his own ghosts if he wants to protect the woman and child who’ve become his reason to believe again.

The Accidental Christmas is the 4th book in a multi author series that takes place in Wild Rose Point.  This one features Hendrix and Josephine in The Cannon Beach Campground.  Hendrix owns the place and every December, he clears out the campground so he can spend the month alone. This year, Josephine and her son are desperate to stay.

This is a short story and is one that put me in a early Christmas mood.  I thought this was a very sweet romance.  I loved how little Ryder wormed his was into Hendrix's heart and helped him feel the Christmas spirit little by little.  The romance was quick but in reality, Joey and Hendrix have been kind of eyeing each other for a long time.  So, when they finally start spending time with each other, the fall into love was easy.  There is also a little bit of a mystery in the story that adds some extra excitement.  I highly recommend this one.

One apartment. One fake boyfriend. One agreement waiting to be broken.

Makayla:
I’m tired of my dad playing matchmaker.
As a music teacher juggling life with sickle cell disease, I don’t have time—or energy—for forced dinner dates with “eligible men.”
So, I come up with a plan: find a fake boyfriend, let him move in, and make it believable.
Daniel was never supposed to say yes.
He’s a grumpy, emotionally walled-off lawyer who hates chaos and clings to solitude.
But now he’s in my apartment—tall, brooding, infuriatingly neat—and fitting into my world way too easily.
I don’t believe in love. Not when life has taught me it rarely sticks around.
But something about him feels dangerously real.

Four sisters. Four clashing personalities. Four different ways of living in the world.
Sister Acts explores the impact of loss on three generations of one family –- in particular, the degree to which, to paraphrase Phyllis Chesler, women are capable of inhumanity toward other women. At times heartbreaking and at times hilarious, the novel illuminates the resilience that can come from knowing one’s roots and the estrangement that can result from trying to escape them.
Sophie Malinsky’s sudden death leaves her Left-wing Jewish family in disarray. Rather than bringing her young daughters closer, the loss creates a tangle of jealousies and recriminations. Rose, the eldest, recognizing their father’s limitations, at first tries to become a surrogate mother for her three sisters. But they resent her efforts, each one channeling – or repressing – her grief in a different way. In the absence of Sophie’s love and guidance, two sisters lose their way. Naomi moves to Mexico and tries to shed her Jewish identity. Betti ends up in Nashville pursuing a dream, never realized, of stardom as a rockabilly musician. A fourth sister, Marla, strives for dominance from an early age. Her jealousy of Rose leads to a toxic rivalry that persists well into middle age, affecting their own daughters as well. Lurking behind the conflicts is a family secret that Sophie had planned, but failed, to reveal. Decades later, when Rose finally uncovers it, the Malinskys’ saga finally comes into sharp focus.
