Review: Lilac Time by Fern Michaels, Lori Foster & Carolyn Brown

Publisher: Kensington
Publication Date: April 2025

SWEET AS HONEY * Fern Michaels
Natalie is through with pining over her ex. If only her efforts to be social again didn’t lead to repeated run-ins with an infuriating beekeeper at the local farmer’s market. Yet Garrett keeps buzzing around. And as Natalie watches his patience and dedication in tending his hives, she begins to wonder if life has a sweet surprise in store.

EVERYTHING SHE’D EVER WANTED * Lori Foster
Annabeth can see that her neighbor’s handsome nephew, Devlin, has his hands full, raising his little girl single-handed. Yet though his life is frazzled, it’s full of the kind of joy and togetherness she longs for. And when Devlin’s daughter and Annabeth’s tiny dog fall hard for each other, it might be the start of more than one beautiful friendship.

THE MEMORY CABIN * Carolyn Brown
Jenna Stewart loves gathering at her Texas lakeside cabin with her girlfriends. It’s an annual tradition to reconnect with the women who helped her deal with her mother’s passing along with the end of her marriage. But this year, lives are changing, dreams are evolving. And perhaps Jenna’s heart has healed enough to welcome a new love that arrives with the first flowers of spring . .

Lilac Time is the latest anthology from three of the loveliest authors in the industry.  All three stories are a breath of fresh air.  There is definitely something for everyone here.  While I enjoyed all of the stories, my favorite was Everything She'd Ever Wanted.  I loved watching Annabeth and Devlin finally give into their attraction. Annabeth has yearned for a forever family. Devlin, his daughter and uncle are exactly the people she needs in her life.   It's such a sweet story.   I highly recommend this one as well as the others in the anthology.

Blog Tour: Review and Feature from The Magnolia Inn by Carolyn Brown

Author: Carolyn Brown
Release Date: January 15, 2019
Publisher: Montlake Romance

Inheriting the Magnolia Inn, a Victorian home nestled in the East Texas pines, is a fantasy come true for Jolene Broussard. After living with the guilt of failing to rescue her self-destructive mother, Jolene knows her aunt and uncle’s B&B is the perfect jump start for a new life and a comforting place to call home. There’s just one hitch: stubborn and moody carpenter Tucker Malone. He’s got a half interest in the Magnolia Inn, and he’s planting his dusty cowboy boots squarely in the middle of her dream.

Ever since his wife’s death, Tucker’s own guilt and demons have left him as guarded as Jolene. The last thing he expects is for his new partner to stir something inside him he thought was gone forever. And as wary as Jolene is, she may have found a kindred spirit—someone she can help, and someone she can hold on to.

Restoring the Magnolia Inn is the first step toward restoring their hearts. Will they be able to let go of the past and trust each other to do it together?

The Magnolia Inn is the latest stand alone offering from this author.  It involves Jolene and Tucker as they begin a partnership to restore and open up a bed and breakfast.  Tucker is still grieving for his dead wife after a car accident took her two years earlier.  Jolene is wary of getting involved with anyone.

This ended up being an OK read for me.  It was less about the romance between Tucker and Jolene and more about Tucker's working through his grief.  It also focuses on the other characters in the book, Jolene's aunt Sugar and her three friends.  While I enjoyed the older women in the story, I would have liked the romance to be less of the slow burn than it was.  The majority of the book involves Jake talking to his dead wife and getting over his grief.  Once he does at about the 3/4 mark, then the romance goes really fast.  I guess, I just ultimately wanted more.  Still, it was enjoyable and if you are in the mood for a clean slow burn romance, than this is one to check out.

As an extra treat, I hope you enjoy letter from one of the characters, Dotty, below.

Dotty Welcomes Readers to The Magnolia Inn

Good morning to all y’all. Thank you for inviting me to your site today to tell you a little about The Magnolia Inn. I’m so excited about this book. The characters became like family to me as I was writing it. Today, I have Dotty with me. She’s one of the four ladies—Sugar, Dotty, Lucy and Flossie—who’ve been fast friends since their youth. I’m going to turn this microphone over to Dotty now, and leave the rest of the post to her.

Hello, folks, I’m Dotty Beauchamp—half Texan, half Louisianan and all sass. I own the Tipsy Gater bar that sets right on the Big Cypress Bayou near Jefferson, Texas. When my good friend, Sugar, told me that she was going to give half of The Magnolia Inn, the bed and breakfast that her family had owned for generations, to her niece, Jolene, I thought she was bat crap crazy. When she said that her husband, Jasper, was giving the other half to his wimpy nephew, Reuben—well, I figured Reuben would sell his half the minute the ink dried on the papers.

I was right! The little weasel sold out his part of the inn to Tucker Malone. We—that would be Lucy and Flossie and me since Sugar was already off in that big ass RV touring the United States—had heard that he was a tortured soul. And dear hearts, we damn sure believed the rumor. He was the best of the best when it came to carpentry work, and from what we heard he only hit the bottle on weekends, but still we didn’t want our precious Jolene in living in that inn with him.

I really didn’t want to hire Jolene when she came to the bar looking for work, but I needed help and she sure enough needed a job. I figured I’d take some flack for it from Sugar, Lucy and Flossie, and I did—believe me I did. But Jolene and I both lived through it.

When we met Tucker for the first time, we were sure that the rumors had been right. His wife had died in an automobile accident a few years back. She’d gone to our church so we all knew her very well, and we’d met Tucker a few times when he showed up at church with her. When she died, he turned to the bottle and lost his important job on the police force over in Dallas. It was rumored that he came to our part of the world to be near her grave site. Poor man, he wore the guilt like a heavy shroud and just couldn’t seem to get past it.

But I’m digressing. When we met him we found out that he was also a Prince Charming. He didn’t have a white horse or a white cowboy hat, or a crown, but he was so sweet and kind, and he had such a sweet nature, that pretty soon, we fell in love with him as much as—well, she didn’t know it then, being as how she had plenty of baggage of her own—but as much as Jolene could it they’d could get past all the obstacles life kept throwing at them.

I see that my time is up. So let me thank you again for inviting me sit a spell and visit with all y’all. And if you’re ever in Jefferson, Texas, come on down to the Tipsy Gater and I’ll give you a free drink if you tell me that you’ve read The Magnolia Inn.

More Than the Chili's Heating Up Cadillac, Texas

Carlene Lovelle, co-owner of Bless My Bloomers lingerie shop, found a pair of fancy red-silk panties in her husband's briefcase, and all hell is breaking loose. She custom-made those fancy bloomers herself—and she remembers the bimbo who bought them. If her husband had a lick of sense, he'd known there are no secrets in a town like Cadillac.

Carlene's cohorts—and their mamas—plan to exact revenge on Lenny Joe where it'll hurt the most: break his ten-year winning streak at the prestigious Red-Hot Chili Cook-Off. Never before has a woman dared to compete. But the ladies of Bless My Bloomers are cooking up a storm...and it seems the whole town is taking sides in the showdown.

Welcome to Cadillac, Texas, where the chili is hot, the gossip is hotter, and friends stick by each other, no matter what the challenge.

My thoughts:

I love when a book can make me laugh out loud.  The Red-Hot Chili Cook off definitely fit the bill for that!  I really enjoyed the book.  While it is a sequel, I felt like it can be read as a stand alone book.  I loved the characters.  They are really what made the book for me.  Carlene, Patrice, and Alma-Grace are three cousins who own Bless Your Bloomers, a custom lingerie shop in town.  Their mothers are sisters and women who fight fiercely for their daughters. I loved how everyone rallied around Carlene after she left her cheating husband.    Being a small town, the gossip is always flying.  The way the rumors kept getting out of hand is one of the things that made me laugh the most. This is a great book and I do hope you will spend some time visiting the town of Cadillac and it's very colorful residents!

Thank you folks at TBR Pile for letting me stop by here for the final blog on the recipe tour for The Red-Hot Chili Cook-Off. Since this brings us to the end of our recipe blog tour, I have to admit I was sorely tempted to share the prize winning chili recipe with all y’all, but that would be a definite spoiler since at this point it’s still anyone’s game so I decided to share a recipe for homemade ice cream. The Red Hot Bloomers Team is serving those little cups of ice cream with their chili because it is so damned hot.

The day is here. Lenny is sure he’s going to win for the sixth year in a row and the ladies from the Bless My Bloomer’s lingerie shop are giving it all the southern charm they can find. In case you missed the rest of the blog tour, three cousins, Carlene, Alma Grace and Patrice, own and operate the Bless My Bloomers shop. Josie, their seamstress at the shop, and their three mothers, Tansy, Gigi and Sugar, make up the seven member team. Lenny Joe, bless his heart is one of those men who were born stupid. He left a pair of his girlfriend’s bikini underwear in his briefcase and Carlene, his wife, found them. It was a double whammy for humiliation because she made the under britches at her shop. The family has joined together, religious and not so religious alike, to be the first women in the chili cook-off in Cadillac. Hopefully, they’ll take the trophy right out of Lenny Joe’s cheatin’ hands. It’s time for the judges to do their tasting…

A slightly abbreviated excerpt:
Carlene stirred the chili one more time so the aroma of their special blend would fill the judge’s noses before they ever tasted it. Six judges lined up in front of the Red-Hot Bloomers stand, laid their clipboards with a blank page covering the stack of entries on the table, and eyed the whole display from back to front.
Alma Grace opened the freezer and removed six cups of ice cream with six special little wooden spoons on top imprinted with, “Red-Hot Bloomers thank you.” She set one in front of each judge’s station.
“Good morning,” Patrice greeted the judges with her best smile. “We realize that you are only allowed to taste the chili, itself, but in appreciation for all your work, we have an envelope for each of you. Inside you’ll find a coupon redeemable anytime today for a bowl of chili with or without chips or condiments, a free glass of sweet tea, and another cup of ice cream.” She laid them on top of their clipboards as Josie carefully measured one fourth of a cup of chili into each hot-pink plastic bowl with the team logo printed on the side.
Isaac looked down the row and nodded. They all scooped up a spoonful and put it in their mouths.
“Holy smoke, that’s hot!” Isaac grabbed the ice cream and shoveled two bites into his mouth before picking up his clipboard and writing.
“I taste a bit of Cajun. I like it,” Floy’s husband wrote on his clipboard before he opened his ice cream.
Tip ate the whole sampling, pulled a snowy white hanky from his hip pocket, and wiped his brow. “Now that is some damn good chili.”
John, the owner of the Rib Joint, tasted, thought a few minutes, and tasted again. “I’d put chili on my menu with this recipe. Fine job, ladies.”
Barbara Culpepper, bless her heart and God love her soul, couldn’t get to the ice cream fast enough. Steam rolled out her ears and she fanned her face with her clipboard, all the while reaching for a bottle of water in the shoulder purse hanging across her chest.
“Ice cream, darlin’.” Gigi opened it for her and stuck the little spoon in the middle. “It coats the palate and takes away the burn.”
Mayor Jim Burdette tasted, wrote on his clipboard, nodded at the ladies, and left his ice cream sitting on the table.
“Good luck to you,” he said as he moved to the next exhibition.
Carlene waited until they were at the next tent before she sat down at the picnic table. “Well? Aunt Tansy, you’re the psychic. What do you think?”
“I’m not a bit worried, darlin’,” Tansy said.
“Alma Grace, your opinion?” Carlene asked.
“Well, I think that after eating that chili, Barbara Culpepper may sing a little better come Sunday morning,” she said.
Carlene looked at Josie. “Mayor was on the fence. I wouldn’t even play poker with him on a good night. Can’t read his face a damn bit.”
“No strings of Spanish?” Gigi asked Josie.
“Not today. Today it’s press one for English.”
Patrice sat down beside Carlene. “They’re going to taste twenty kinds of chili and there won’t be a nickels worth of difference in any of it, but they won’t forget ours or our tent.”
Gigi nodded. “We are breaking ground for women of the future even though I will not do this ever again. One trophy is enough for me.”
Agnes waved from the tape at the back of the tent. “Hey, y’all! You been judged yet? I’d duck under this tape but that sorry ass Lenny might say that you had more in your tent than seven and get you thrown out.”
“We’ve been judged Miz Agnes. Heard you had a little mix-up last night,” Sugar said.
“Violet don’t have any idea when to shut her mouth. I swear that woman’s got a magic mirror in her house and when she looks in it she sees Marilyn Monroe or Betty Boop instead of an old, chubby woman who’s trying to outrun wrinkles and age,” Agnes declared.

Summer isn’t far away and that’s a time for home made ice cream and long, lazy evenings out under the shade trees, visitin’ while the kids play catch or toss Frisbees around. Have you got a favorite ice cream recipe you’d like to share with us?

SOUTHERN STYLE HOME CHURNED ICE CREAM

1 quart whipping cream
1 quart + 3 cups whole milk (do not substitute 2% milk)
12 egg Yolks
4 tablespoons vanilla
3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons salt

Scald milk in a large 6 quart saucepan. In a large bowl, beat together egg yolks and salt. Add about 3 cups of the hot milk to the egg yolks slowly while stirring constantly. Then return this mixture to the milk in the pan. Add sugar and keep stirring while cooking at medium heat. When mixture coats the spoon or just starts to boil, remove from heat. In most cases, the mix will be lumpy. No worry. Just remember to strain out the lumps when you pour it into the canister. You will have lots of left over egg whites. Use them for make some meringue shells to serve the ice cream in.
By substituting additional cream for some of the milk, this can be made even richer. In the south we don’t think anything can be “too rich.”
Either use a “hand cranked” freezer or an electric one. Use lots of rock salt and plenty of ice and let it set for fifteen or twenty minutes after it’s churned before serving.

She's Got Sass...
Emily Cooper promised her dying grandfather that she'd deliver a long-lost letter to a woman he once planned to wed. Little does adventurous Emily know that this simple task will propel her to places she never could have imagined...with a cowboy who's straight out of her dreams...

He's Got Mail...
When sexy rancher Greg Adams discovers his grandmother Clarice has installed Emily on their ranch as her assistant, he decides to humor the two ladies. He figures Emily will move on soon enough. In the meantime, he intends to keep a close eye on her—he doesn't quite buy her story of his grandmother as a mail-order bride.

My thoughts:

The Cowboy's Mail Order Bride was a really fun book to read. Emily goes to Greg's ranch to deliver some letters to his grandmother.  She is fulfilling her grandfather's dying wish.  She only planned on being there for one day.  What she didn't plan on was finding love and a home.    I loved watching Emily and Greg fall for each other.  More than their story, though, I loved all of the other characters in the book.  Clarice, Dottie, Rose and Madge added a lot of comic relief to the book.  Their plan for finding Greg a wife was too funny!  This is the third book in the series and for me it was the best. Each of them can be read as a stand alone, so you could start with this one.

Kari& Autumn: What inspired you to become a writer?

Carolyn:  Good morning, Kari and Autumn. Thank you so much for inviting me to stop by your site. It’s delightful to me here and to visit with y’all. Can you believe it’s almost Valentine’s Day? Emily and Lucas have quite a mix-up about the Valentine’s Day party in The Cowboy’s Mail Order Bride, but like all misunderstandings, it does get worked out and oh, my, what a lovely evening! But enough, you said something about asking questions…

Now for the question: Reading! When I figured out what those squiggly lines were in the books, I wanted to tell stories like they did. When I didn’t have a book to read, I made one up in my head and entertained my brother and sister with the story.

Kari& Autumn: Where do you come up with the ideas for your books?

Carolyn:  Anything can inspire a book. A couple talking across a barbed wire fence, evidently both very upset about something. A news item about a family who was still feuding after years and years brought on the Burnt Boot Series.  One of my author friends sending a joke inspired a trilogy about three sisters and a murdered abusive husband. Wondering what path my own life might have taken if my proposal and engagement ring (which came via snail mail more than 40 years ago) had gotten lost along the way. That last one is the inspiration for The Cowboy’s Mail Order Bride.

Kari& Autumn: What exciting projects are waiting in the wings?

Carolyn:  The Red Hot Chili Cook-off, the second book in the women’s fiction trilogy set in Cadillac, Texas, will hit the shelves. After that the final book in Cowboy’s and Brides, How to Marry a Cowboy, is scheduled for July. Then in August, there’s a debut book in the Red Dirt Series, Long Hot Texas Summer. And in October, the Burnt Boot Series kicks off with Cowboy Boots for Christmas (Cowboy Not Included). After that there’s another women’s fiction in the works and lots more cowboys!

Kari& Autumn: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

Carolyn:  Katy Scarlett O’Hara because she was made of pure sass and grit.

Kari& Autumn: Just for fun, if you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

Carolyn:  A cat. They are independent, sassy, determined and loveable. They find a nice cuddly blanket and sleep away the hours without feeling guilty about it and folks don’t look at them like they’ve lost their minds when they play…no matter how old they are!

Joint review: Blue-Ribbon Jalapeño Society Jubilee by Carolyn Brown

Author: Carolyn Brown
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Date of Publication: March 1, 2013

Everything is calm in Cadillac, Texas until Aunt Agnes declares war on Violet Prescott, the president of the Blue-Ribbon Jalapeno Society, just in time for the annual jubilee. But after the festivities—and the hostilities—are over, it's four friends who are left standing, proving once again that friendship is forever.

When I started this book, I almost put it down.  I didn't much like the characters.  I thought they were abrasive and read as older than they were.  I'm glad I gave it a chance.  I ended up enjoying the story.  You ever want to read a story about a nasty person who thinks they are all that and a bag of chips?  You know the type.  She's the queen bee in town and everyone bows to her.  Ever want to read a story about seeing her get what's due?  Then this book is for you.

It is filled with hilarious characters.  Aunt Agnes is the type of old lady I want to be when I get older!  The small town gossip makes for some fun times. But at the heart of the book, you will find a wonderful story about deep friendship.  All I can say, is stick with it and I think you will enjoy the book.

I'm a big fan of Southern Literature so I was happy to give this book a shot.  I was really disappointed with the characters.  They were all big and loud and outrageous.  It was the characters were all Paula Deen at various stages of her life.

I started reading the book and didn't care for so I set it aside.  When I tried to go back to it, I found that my feelings really hadn't changed.  So, unfortunately, this book just wasn't for me.  This is one of the rare times Kari and I disagree on a book.
