Until We Fall by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher: Self
Date of publication: April 2018

The darkness never forgets…
Caleb Gregory has spent ten years hiding in the dark, refusing to speak about the night his young life was destroyed. In his anger and his rage, he drank and fought until he drove everyone away until he had no one left.

The light casts a long shadow…

Nalini King has devoted her post army life to her passion: using yoga to heal her fellow soldiers. In doing so, she’s worked to forget the night her life burned down around her.

An unexpected storm…
When a storm forces them into the darkness together, these two wounded souls must face the demons of their past.

Because it is only in the darkest night that we can truly see the light.

Until We Fall is the fifth book in the "falling" series.  It's also the one I have been looking forward to the most.  Caleb has popped up in the previous books and has always intrigued me.  I can't even find the words to tell you how much I loved this story.  This author has a real talent for making me FEEL when I read her stories.  This book is no exception.  It's messy, gut wrenching and exhausting.  IT's also sweet, sexy and hopeful.  After finishing, I felt like I had been put through the wringer but had hope at the same time.

I don't want to give away too much of Caleb and Nalini's story.  I really think you need to experience it for yourself.  I found myself rooting for Caleb. Honestly with or without Nalini, I wanted him to succeed.  What I loved most was the author didn't sugar coat the struggle that he went through every minute of his day.  The book works fine as a stand alone. The entire series is wonderful, but this one was my favorite.  I highly recommend reading it.

Review & Excerpt of Catch My Fall by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher: Self
Date of publication: September 2017

Former Army Sergeant Deacon Hunter is trapped.

Trapped in the friend zone. Longing for the woman who captured his heart when they were deployed in Iraq.

Former Army Sergeant Kelsey Ryder has scars, the kind of scars she hopes that no one ever sees. Working around the guys at the Pint, she’s reminded of everything she lost when she left the Army behind.

But some scars refuse to stay hidden.

One fateful night changes everything and neither of them know if their relationship will ever be the same.

All Deacon knows is that he’ll be there to catch her when she finally falls

I have been wanting to read Deacon and Kelsey's story for a while.  They have always been circling around each other in the earlier books, so it was fun to finally get to their story.  While I did enjoy their story immensely, there was another aspect of the story that I liked even more.  I have always said that Ms. Scott's military experience allows her to give a sense of realism to the situations in the books.  Her highlighting the plight of women veterans as pertaining to the VA system was spot on.  Having seen how my own mother navigates through the system,  I agree with most of how she portrays the hurdles our female vets have to overcome just to get care.  It is deplorable and we need to do a better job.

As I said, I loved Deacon and Kelsey.  They were both broken,. Together they are better and find a way to put the pieces back together.  One of the funniest scenes in this book is the hot yoga scene.  I laughed through Deacons' narrative because I swear I thought the same things when I took my one and only yoga class in college.  If you haven't yet, check this series out.,  Each book can be read as a stand alone.  I highly recommend them.

Enjoy this sneak peek:

I can't sleep.
I stare at my phone for a while; I guess I’m surprised that my pen pal is still talking to me. This is by far the strangest thing I’ve ever done, but right now, it’s comforting. Like talking to an old friend.
Me either. Nights like this can get really long, really quick.
Do you want to meet?
This could be an elaborate scam to steal my money or milk me for sperm to sell to a fertility bank. Or maybe my pen pal wants my kidney. Those are in high demand these days, aren't they?
To hell with my kidneys. I'm curious now.
Shouldn't we meet somewhere public and well lit, first?
She sends me the place: 42 North, an all-night café a few blocks from here.
What if I get there and we decide that meeting in real life is super awkward?
The email response is back almost before I can blink. There's a desperation in the speed of the reply, and with everything else that happened tonight it's got my Spidey senses tingling.
We'll have to figure it out, won't we? Do you like to play games? Like Monopoly or something?
That response I don't have to think about: Not particularly.
The response is delayed this time. As if she's thinking.
I'm assuming the person on the other end is a she. Could be a dude. Which would be awkward because I don't hit for the same team.
No games. No sex. I just…I don't want to be alone.

After I Fall by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher:
Date of publication: March 2017

Her entire life has been a lie. Being with Eli is the most honest thing she’s ever done.

Parker Hauser lives the perfect life and knows exactly where she's been and where she's going. Parker has to be perfect. Perfect grades, perfect body, perfect life.

Until she meets Eli Winter.

Eli throws her entire life into chaos when he denies her the one thing she wants from him.

One chance encounter stokes her desire for the man who refused to touch her and left her questioning everything.

When Parker tries to help his new business, the spotlight turns on Eli's military record. And the war he's tried to forget may  destroy them both.

After I Fall is the third in the Falling series.  I have really been a fan of this series and this one makes a great addition.  It definitely can be read as a stand alone, so if you are new to the series with this one, you won't be missing anything.  This is Parker and Eli's story.  I have been waiting for Eli's story because I was intrigued by him in the previous book.

Ms. Scott always knows how to get right to the heart of her characters.  My heart was just breaking for Parker throughout this book.  I can't imagine what it is like to feel helpless and trapped in a life you don't want.  I was so rooting for her to break free and to realize she was strong enough to do it.  I loved her and Eli together.  The only thing I wish was that I had gotten more of Eli's background. I wanted to get to know him more than I did. Essentially, I wish this story was longer because I loved it so much.

I definitely recommend this one.  Fans of this author won't be disappointed.  I also know new readers will soon discover a new favorite author.  I can;t wait to see what is next.

Break My Fall by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Series: Falling #2
Release Date: February 15, 2016

For Josh Douglas, broken by the impotent rage of combat and loss, pain is the only thing that feels real until he meets Abby Hillard.  In Josh, Abby sees a puzzle for someone else to solve even though she deeply feels the pull to free the darkness that cloaks him.  BREAK MY FALL by USA Today Bestselling author, Jessica Scott, is the second book in an emotional new adult series about a group of young veterans adjusting to life away from the military. They've got a lot to learn about life away from war - and college may or may not be the place for them to learn it.

Violence. I’m addicted to it. It’s how I feel alive. It’s the only thing that’s real any more.
And now I have to sit around and discuss it like it’s physics or calculus.
I can’t do it. I can’t pretend that it’s some sterile academic topic.
Violence isn’t sterile. It isn’t calm. It’s pulsing. It’s alive.
It’s my drug.
Until I met Abby, I never wanted anything beyond the next fight.
Never considered that I might finally find a way back to the land of the living.
Now? Now I find myself dreaming of a woman with golden eyes.
But I can never be with her. Because I am not whole. And I never will be again.

But I cannot stay away. And loving her might finally be what breaks me.

I was so happy when I got my hands on a copy of Break My Fall.  I loved the first book in this series, Before I Fall.  I can say the same thing about this second New Adult book. One of the hardest things that I find when an author keeps writing great books is that I run out of creative ways to say I loved it.  I guess there could be worse problems, right?  It definitely can be read as a stand alone, so if you missed the first book, you will be not be lost.

Break my Fall is Josh and Abby's story.  Josh is in his second semester of college and trying to deal with the violence and rage that war left him with.  Abby has her own scars from a violent past.  I loved them together because they brought an inner peace to each other.  I also liked that they kept fighting for each other because they knew something special was brewing.

One of the things that I love about Ms. Scott is that she isn't afraid to confront the hard issues about the after effects of war.  She tackles addiction, depression and a broken VA system  with a refreshing honesty.  In this book, she tackles another issue that I haven't seen brought up before, especially in the New Adult genre..impotence.  I thought she handled the subject with great respect and care.

I highly recommend this book and any of her other books.  I'm looking forward to the third book, hopefully it is Eli's story!

Excerpt:

The moment I see Josh, though, everything else falls away. Their noise, their needs. Everything I am is focused on Josh.
He is darkness and shadows near the edge of the dim light. He doesn't even pretend he's not watching me. It does something to my insides as I meet his eyes and refuse to look away.
In the shadows, his eyes look almost black. His face is sharper, more angled, the stubble on his jaw darker.
He stands out. I think he always will, no matter where he is. He’s wearing jeans and a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves pushed up, exposing his thick forearms. There is writing on his forearms. Big, black letters that blend into the shadows so I cannot read them.
The men who frequent this place do not get tattoos. At least not visible ones. No, these men have polished hands and pressed shirts and impeccable manners.
They don’t stand in the doorway, staring.
No, Josh is none of those things. He's not polished and he's not pressed.
Graham slides up beside me and of course, he has noticed exactly who I’m watching. "Oh, look who’s back," Graham murmurs. “Do you have any condoms?”
I lift one brow and try to pretend that I don't actually know who we're talking about. "Are you serious?"
"Don't even try it," Graham says, patting my cheek. "What did you call him the other morning? Mr. Tall, Dark & Depressed?"

Blog Tour: After the War by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher: Self
Date of publication: May 5, 2015

The second book in the emotional new Homefront series from USA Today Bestselling author Jessica Scott

A terrible loss…

Captain Sarah Anders lost her husband to the Iraq war and has nearly lost the career she loves. Sent to Fort Hood, she only wants to do her job and take care of the daughter she’s raising on her own. She never counted on running straight into a memory she’d tried to forget.

A love he never forgot...

Captain Sean Nichols never got over Sarah. He simply tried to forget her amidst the war and the chaos of combat. But when she’s assigned to investigate his unit, he comes face to face with the woman no war or any amount of time could make him forget.

A dark secret…

As Sarah gets closer to the truth, Sean must accept that actions he took during the war may end the tentative love building between them. And even if Sarah can forgive him, Sean may never be able to forgive himself.

After the War is the second book in the Homefront series about the lives  of soldiers in war time.  I always say this when I review one of Ms. Scott's books, so I'll say it again here.  Her military experience and background really helps infuse a lot of reality into her books.  She doesn't sugar coat anything.  The reality of war, the price our soldiers and families play?  They all suck!  But, sometimes in amid all of that you can find a sense of home and love to help you through the bad times.

In this book, Sarah has been assigned to Fort Hood.  She lost her husband in the war 6 years earlier.  Now she is a single mom and soldier trying to make her way doing what she loves.  Sean is her ex-fiance who is eager to try for a second chance with the woman he never forgot. I was totally rooting for this couple the whole time.  I'm a sucker for second chance romance.  Theirs was a hard story to read.  Both have suffered immense loss because of the war.  I really felt for Sarah as she tries to find the courage to open her self up to love again, knowing that she is risking heart ache.

Apart from the romance, the book also takes a look at the role of single mother's in the military.  Sarah's boss is a female who believes that single mothers have no place in the military at all.  Sadly, I'm sure there is a lot of this attitude today.

If you haven't tried out this book or any of the others that Ms. Scott has written, what are you waiting for?  I definitely recommend you do so.  I hope you all fall in love with them as I have!

Enjoy this excerpt from After the Warr:

They were in public; they couldn’t be seen embracing or kissing. Instead, she threaded her fingers with his and stood silently, resting her head against his shoulder.
He couldn’t say who was holding who upright at that point. And he wasn’t sure he cared.
He finally spoke, long after he was sure his voice wouldn’t break. “I guess…I thought you’d be angry. Thought you’d hate me all over again.”
She stroked her thumb over his. “I had Jack in my life for a while. And it was good. I have to be glad for the time we had. I have his daughter. And I will always have good memories of him.” She blinked rapidly and cleared her throat. Her fingers tightened in his. “And up until now, as much as I’ve never thought about having anyone else in my life—but I can’t say that anymore now. I don’t know what the right answer is. I don’t know if I’m supposed to hate you for being there, or if I’m supposed to say I’m glad you made it home. I don’t know, Sean.”
She rested her cheek against his shoulder, letting the silence hang between them, unable to fill it with anything else. Things were too twisted, too mixed up.
“There are no right answers, Sar. We can only try to do the best we can by each other.” He cupped her face, to hell with being in public. “I failed you before. I didn’t listen to what you wanted, what you needed.” He paused. “I’d like to try and be there for you now. If you can let me.”
She met his gaze. Her fingers tightened in his.
And she did not pull away.

Homefront by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher: Self
Date of publication: April 2015

He's always loved her...
First Sergeant Gale Sorren waited a war and half a lifetime for a chance to get stationed near the ex-wife who left him years ago. When he finally musters the courage to see her, the life he imagined she was living was nothing close to the reality.
She's never stopped loving him...
Melanie never stopped worrying about Gale each time he headed off to war. But he's never been there when she needed him and she's had fifteen years to steel her heart against him.
But when Gale moves to Fort Hood, he finally has a chance to make things right with Melanie and the daughter she raised without him.
Can Mel trust her heart to a man who has always let her down?
I have always loved stories about second chances because they always leave me feeling hopeful. Homefront was just such a story.  It is a new series by this author, but it is also an offshoot of her Coming Home series.  It takes place on Fort Hood and some of the characters from previous books make an appearance.  Homefront centers on First Sergeant Gale Sorren.  He has been apart from his ex-wife and daughter for years and is finally in a place to be near them.  He is hoping for a chance to get to know his daughter.  Once he sees Melanie, he realizes he never stopped wanting her.  Melanie is wary of him and is afraid to let down her guard.

I know I have said it before about this author, but her military background really does as depth to her stories.  War can tear families apart as it did with this family.  But with trust and perseverance, families can survive and come out stronger in the end.  It was a pleasure to watch Melanie and Jamie slowly welcome Gale back into the fold.  I was really rooting for them to be able to make themselves into a family again.

Ms. Scott has quickly become one of my "go to" authors when I want a well written and heartwarming romance.  I look forward to the next book, After the War coming out soon!

Blog Tour: Before I Fall by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher: Jessica Scott
Date of publication: March 2015

Stay focused. Get a job. Save her father's life.

Beth Lamont knows far too much about the harsh realities of life her gilded classmates have only read about in class. She'll do whatever it takes to take care of her father, even if that means tutoring a guy like Noah - a guy who represents everything she hates about the war, soldiers and what the Army has done to her family.

Noah Warren doesn't know how to be a student. All he knows is war. But he's going to college now to fulfill a promise and he doesn't break his promises. Except he doesn't count on his tutor being drop dead gorgeous and distracting as hell. One look at Beth threatens to unravel the careful lies Noah has constructed around him.

A simple arrangement turns into something neither of them can deny. And a war that neither of them can forget could destroy them both.

BEFORE I FALL is Ms. Scott’s first foray into the New Adult genre.  I adored this book, so I think it is safe to say that she made a successful transition.    The story is a serious one as it deals with addiction and PTSD. But the love story is endearing and makes you believe love really can conquer anything!  Noah is back from the war and is attempting to finish out his business degree.  He has to pass Statistics and Beth is the best person for the job.  The problem is that Beth hates everything military.  Her father is a veteran and the government has not treated him well in terms of his injuries and recovery.

Having dealt with the VA system frequently for a family member, I could really sympathize with Beth.  Her struggle to navigate the system for her father is a reality that a lot of family members face today.  His pill and alcohol addiction puts them into an endless loop that she can’t see her way out of either financially or health wise.   Enter Noah who is dealing with his own demons resulting from his time overseas.  Noah’s social anxiety and addiction came across as very real. A lot of soldiers coming back find it hard to adjust to normal every day life.   I loved watching Beth and Noah fall for each other. He gives her a soft place to fall and she gives him an internal calm that he can’t find seem to find elsewhere.   I was really rooting for them and I applauded Noah’s and Beth’s decisions in the end.

I really liked how the author handled the subject of both addiction and PTSD.  I think that is important that themes like this are written for the New Adult crowd as they affect more and more young people today.  I have been an avid fan of Ms, Scott’s ever since I read her novel Because of You, (Coming Home #1).  This author’s background in military life gives depth to her stories and characters. I really believe that we, as readers, are getting a true glimpse into the ups and downs of being a soldier.  When I finish one of her books, I am always eagerly waiting for the next one to come out.  I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.  I want to see how Noah and Beth are doing!

Blog Tour: It's Always Been You by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher: Forever (Grand Central)
Date of publication: March 2014

She plays by the rules . . .
Captain Ben Teague is many things: a tough soldier, a loyal friend, and a bona fide smart-ass. He doesn't have much tolerance for BS, which is why he's mad as hell when a trusted colleague and mentor is brought up on charges that can't possibly be true. He's even more frustrated with by-the-book lawyer Major Olivia Hale. But there's something simmering beneath her icy reserve-and Ben just can't resist turning up the heat

. . .. . . and he's determined to break them
The only thing riskier than mixing business with pleasure is enjoying it . . . and Olivia can't resist locking horns-and lips-with Ben. He's got more compassion in his little finger than any commander she's ever met, a fact that makes him a better leader than he realizes. But when the case that brought them together awakens demons from Olivia's past, she will have to choose between following orders-or her heart . . .

I am so in love with this series!  It's Always Been You is a great addition. I totally loved Ben and Olivia.  Ben has been thrust into a position he never wanted..taking command of a company of soldiers.  At first, I thought he was just lazy. I'll admit, I didn't like that about Ben at first.  But, I found that he just lacks some confidence in his ability to lead.  He also wants to do the right thin by his men and sometimes that is hard to do in a military setting.  Especially when they are trying to kick out the riff-raff.  I liked what he did for Foster and Zittoro. Sometimes giving someone hope is enough.  Olivia has a whole set of baggage on her shoulders.  Her past experiences with child abuse have definitely colored her ability to take her personal feelings out of her cases.  It has also allowed her to build a steel wall around her heart.   I think I liked these two together because despite their clashing initially, they were good for each other.   Their chemistry was flirty and a lot of fun to watch.  Their HEA was super sweet.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series.  I hope it comes out soon! The excerpt below is one of my favorites from the book. First kisses are the best!

Enjoy this excerpt from It's Always Been you!

“You don’t like being in command, do you, Ben?” she whispered. The air was thick between them, heavy with unsaid things.
He shook his head. “It’s too much responsibility for other people’s problems. I’m not qualified to judge someone else’s screw ups,” he said.
He shifted so he could face her, his body angled toward hers. A shadow partially concealed his face, casting it in hard lines and a dozen shades of grey.
“You’re not supposed to be perfect to be a leader,” she whispered. Her voice cracked, hung on the tension in her neck from sitting a little too close.
Silence filled the space between them. Heavy and warm and crackling with latent energy.
He licked his bottom lip, his gaze locked with hers. “I don’t want to be either,” he said. His voice was a husky whisper filled with need.
Her breath caught in her throat. A hesitant movement. A breath closer. This was monumentally stupid. Infinitely so.
And yet she parted her lips, her entire body trembling in anticipation of the faintest touch of his. He was there, just there. A breath separated them. Nothing more.
It was a hesitant kiss. A light, teasing brush of his top lip against hers. Her breath mingled with his, threading between them and urging her closer. She met his eyes, waiting. Wanting. Needing more of this deeply sensual man who made her feel so many writhing, hungry things.
It was forever before either of them moved. Her breath was locked in her throat. Then she felt it. His palm slid over her cheek, his fingers rough on her skin. Warmth penetrated her, wound its way over the surface to slide beneath her skin and stroke something long dormant to life.
Need. It was need that made her lean toward him. Need that made her part her lips and trace his mouth with her tongue. Need that made her nip his bottom lip and thread her fingers in the short hair on the back of his neck.
Need that made her gasp in pleasure as his tongue slid against hers, twining in that sensuous dance that brought her blood to life. Heat pounded between her thighs, an aching, pulsing want that scorched her like nothing she’d ever felt.
She gave herself over to the sensation, to the pleasure of his touch. Knowing it was a mistake and far past caring as her breath finally released, mixing with the heated strokes of his tongue.
She eased back after a moment, before she did something monumentally stupid, like crawling into his lap in broad daylight.
“We really should talk about those legal packets,” she said against his mouth.
His smile was unexpected. “Wow, you are hell on a man’s ego,” he said.
The laugh caught her off guard and she rested her forehead against his as she struggled to regain her composure. Something opened against her heart, something unexpected and warm.
Something complicated.
For a brief moment, it was tempting to throw caution to the curb, to nuzzle his mouth with hers, to absorb his taste andwarmth.
And then reality kicked in.
“We really should head back. We’ve got that meeting in two hours,” she said.
He smiled. “Always responsible and focused.”
He brushed his thumb over her lip as he said it. This was something nice.
Unexpected.
It was going to be an interesting legal briefing, that was for damn sure.

Can a battle-scarred warrior . . .

Stay sober. Get deployed. Lead his platoon. Those are the only things that matter to Sergeant First Class Reza Iaconelli. What he wants is for everyone to stay out of his way; what he gets is Captain Emily Lindberg telling him how to deal with his men. Fort Hood's newest shrink is smart as a whip and sexy as hell. She's also full of questions-about the army, its soldiers, and the agony etched on Reza's body and soul.

. . . open his heart to love?

Emily has devoted her life to giving soldiers the care they need-and deserve. Little does she know that means facing down the fierce wall of muscle that is Sergeant Iaconelli like it's just another day at the office. When Reza agrees to help her understand what makes a soldier tick, she's thrilled. Too bad it doesn't help her unravel the sexy warrior in front of her who stokes her desire and touches a part of her she thought long dead. He's the man who thinks combat is the only escape from the demons that haunt him. The man who needs her most of all . . .

My thoughts:

All for You was such a good book.  I really loved it.  It was also a difficult book to read because of the subject matter. Alcoholism and suicide never make for light reading material.  The story centers around Reza and Emily.  Reza, who we met back in Until There was You, is an alcoholic who is trying to stay sober on his own.  The stress of his job and learning how to be back home is making it difficult.  Emily is relatively new to the Army and has never seen combat.  She is trying to really reach out to the soldiers who need her help. She looks to Reza to try to help her understand what the soldiers are going through.  I loved these two together.  For me, Reza is the most changed out of all of the men in this series.  Events in the book make him take a hard look at his life and his attitude.  I was really rooting for him to make the right choice in the end.

The story is a realistic look at what is happening to our military when they come back. War changes people.  Addiction is a reality that really can't be ignored.  I was appalled at the attitudes of the higher ranking officers and NCOs toward those who sought treatment and help with their problems. While this is fiction, I'm sure that it carries over into real life.  The book really made me think about what we are asking our young men and women to do for our freedom.  Doesn't freedom always come at a price?   If anything, I know I am starting to have a better appreciation for what they sacrifice so that I can be safe and free.  I applaud the author for not sugarcoating the issues and for giving it to us straight!

If you haven't yet read any of these books, I urge you to give them a try.  They all can be read as stand alone books, but why not start with Because of You?  You won't be sorry.

Enjoy this excerpt from All for You:

Emily watched her friend weave through the crowd of broad-shouldered Cavalrymen and toward the captain. Alone at the bar, Emily twirled her wine in the glass, staring into the swirling pale golden liquid.
She sipped her wine and glanced around the wide open space, feeling the warmth. She was comfortable in this place. A drink after work. A good friend. This was a good life. It was simple. It had purpose. So much better than the complicated mess she’d left behind.
She lifted her glass, savoring the freedom of her rebellion. She might not fit into her uniform just right but she fit here among these soldiers better than she’d ever fit back home.
She saw Olivia gyrating slowly with the captain across the dance floor. Her friend’s movements were slow and sensual, a sultry undulation that spoke of power and of sex. She smiled at her friend’s pleasure. It was enough that Emily could enjoy another’s happiness. She’d come here tonight to relax, to help Olivia celebrate.
“You don’t come here often, do you?”
Emily glanced at the man who’d appeared at her shoulder. He’d been standing with the group of captains that Olivia had just infiltrated.
“Not really,” she said, sipping her drink. She thought about easing away, putting space between where their upper arms touched.
         Personal space much? she thought.
“Are you here with friends?” he asked. She caught a heavy scent of beer from his direction, beer mixed with cigar smoke. It was not unpleasant.
She glanced over at Olivia. “Yeah.”
         “Not up for company?”
She smiled and finally glanced back at him. “Not really. Thank you though.”
He brushed the tip of his hat with two fingers. “My pleasure, ma’am.”
He swaggered off, leaving her alone at the bar. That had been nice. Too bad she wasn’t interested. Once upon a time, she might have danced but there was something missing from the way he’d carried himself.
He was missing that power that Sergeant Iaconelli wore like it was second nature.
She shook her head and took a long sip of her wine. She’d done nothing but argue with the man but now she was thinking about him in a way that was purely unprofessional.
The heavy iron door swung open at that moment and Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
“Speak of the devil,” she muttered.
Reza Iaconelli stood in the doorway, his gaze scanning the room as though he was taking a headcount. What was it about the man that he was always walking through doors at the wrong time? And this time, his gaze swept the bar and landed directly on her.
His eyes lit up, his mouth flattened. Just a faint flicker, but it was enough to tell her he’d recognized her.
And the familiar hostility was gone.
Her mouth went dry and she took another sip. He wasn’t going to come over. It was going to be fine.
They would keep the rampant hostility and no lines would be blurred.
It would be fine, right?
Except that he was now coming over. Weaving through the crowd, his Stetson adding to his height.
What the hell was she supposed to do about that? The closer he got, the more her stomach flipped beneath her ribs.
She was too tired to fight. And the alcohol would probably allow her to say something that she’d regret come Monday.
His clean white shirt accented his shoulders and made his skin look darker, more appealing. His face was shadowed by the brim of the Stetson.
He was there. A short space separated them. He radiated something—a power.
         A rawness.
         She was doomed.
