Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt from The Arrangement by S.D. Lettie

Title: The Arrangement (Bancroft University Chronicles Book 1)
Author: S.D. Lettie
Publisher: Independent
Publication Date: November 7, 2025
Pages: 298
Genre: New Adult / Romantic Suspense
Formats: Paperback, Kindle, FREE w/ Kindle Unlimited

You know that guy you fell for at sixteen—the one who vanished without explanation, leaving behind enough damage to last years? Now imagine being forced into an engagement with him because your parents decided you’re more useful as leverage than as a daughter.
And the part he forgot to mention? He’s heir to a Bratva empire with blood on its hands.
That’s Emilia’s life. Her future is not her own, and her fiancĂ©, Nikolai Volkov, is a man whose silence is more dangerous than his words. Their past is a wound. Their engagement is a threat. And what grows between them is something neither of them should let happen.

The Arrangement is a dark, slow-burn story of buried truths, political corruption, and a connection that pulls two damaged people toward a collision neither may survive unscathed.

Read sample.

The Arrangement is available at Amazon.

My thoughts:

The Arrangement is the first half of the Bancroft University Chronicles duet.  It's definitely a slow burn story involving college senior Emilia.  She is the daughter of the VP of the United States.  She has been raised her whole life to be perfection.  Now she has found out that she has been set up to marry the heir to a powerful Russian mafia family.  She is also about to find out some deep secrets her family has been keeping.

For the most part, I did like this book.  I found it a bit slow in the beginning.  But by the halfway mark I found miser invested Emilia's story.  I was sad that it left off on a cliffhanger.   I was  left with a lot of questions that I hope will be answered in the next installment.  The characters were interesting.  I really liked Emilia's friendship with Thalia.  Everyone needs a ride or die friend like her.  I do recommend giving this one a shot.

BOOK EXCERPT

My phone buzzes in my shorts pocket. I ignore it, thinking it’s a text, but then it buzzes again. I look down and see my father’s name lighting up the screen. Groaning, I answer.
“Emilia.” His voice is calm, clipped. Not cold, just clean, like everything else he controls. He says my name like punctuation.
“Yes, sir.”
“Your mother asked me to check on the brunch.”
She didn’t want to ask herself. She never does. She strategically delegates through him, like always. “It’s done,” I say. “Final headcount is confirmed. Catering’s squared. My remarks are short and already vetted.” There’s a pause, the sound of him moving paper in the background, or maybe pouring a drink. I can’t tell. He’s always multitasking, even when he speaks like everything is a priority.
“She wants it to go smoothly.”
It will. He knows that. He wouldn’t have called if he didn’t already trust it was handled.
“There’s something else,” my father says right as I think we’re done, his voice flat and clipped in the way he reserves for things that aren’t up for discussion. “I’ve arranged a meeting with Nikolai and his father next week at the Four Seasons. I’d like you to be there. We have some important things to discuss.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Before she ever had “author” next to her name, S.D. Lettie was—and still is—an avid reader first; the kind who would finish a book in a day and beg her parents to take her back to the bookstore. Reading started as a hobby and, as she got older, became her source of entertainment, escape, and comfort. Over the years, she found herself wanting to write the kind of worlds readers could get excited about—a world that could grow into a fandom of its own.

Today, Lettie writes slow-burn romances—stories about characters who are imperfectly perfect, the hard moments that shape them, and the plot twists that leave readers reeling. Outside her writing life, she’s a wife and mom of two, roles that influence both her time and perspective. She’s also a dedicated soccer fan, the kind who will plan her day around a match and openly admit she’ll yell at the TV when things get heated.

Through all of it, her goal as an author is simple: she wants her characters to stay with readers long after the book ends.

Her latest book is the new adult romantic suspense, The Arrangement (Bancroft University Chronicles Book 1).

Eighteen-year-old Sara Browne is about to step off a cliff. She is taking a giant leap into the world of college—a normal transition for most—but not for Sara. A car accident that scarred her body and soul—and left her orphaned—has dictated six years of isolation, but that was all in her past. She is ready to leave those dark days behind. Her new goals: make a friend, behave irresponsibly (if she’ll allow herself), and go on an actual date.
The last thing Sara is looking for is a complication, but that is exactly what she finds in the hot, six-foot-three blond named Scott Williams, who she meets at the beginning of the school year. Sara is drawn to Scott in a way that she cannot explain, and he seems just as into her. She wants to trust her heart, but Scott’s promiscuous past keeps creeping into their lives. Jealous ex-girlfriends are one thing, but the stranger who defaces her car, sabotages her laptop, and who sends Sara threatening letters is far worse. Someone is determined to destroy her relationship with Scott and the life Sara is trying so hard to rebuild.
By the time Sara finds out who is behind all the trouble, her life is in shambles and she must fight with every ounce of strength and courage to save herself and the man she loves.

My thoughts:

Flickering Hearts is a very angsty New Adult book. It features Sara who is a freshman in College.  She is an orphan who has spent years sheltered in a boarding school.  She is considering this a fresh start.  Scott is a former player who seems to want to change his ways after he meets Sara.  I have mixed feeling about this book.

On one hand it was a fairly quick read.  I did want to see what happened to the couple.  I did like the characters.   However, I feel like I have read this plotline many times over.  I predicted most of what happened the book.  Sara and Scott 's relationship reminded me of a boyfriend I had in college.  We constantly had misunderstandings because we never communicated effectively.  I saw that a lot in this book. It caused a lot of unnecessary angst. There is also something that happens in the book, that I hope Sara gets some major help for in the future.  I know there is a sequel coming out, so I hope it is addressed.  I would recommend trying this one.  Give it a shot.

The following day, I headed to the library to work on a paper I had to write for my Western
Civilization class. I needed to use their printer. I passed by Derek and Rick on my way in. They
were really chumming it up lately. Rick acted especially happy to see me, but I wasn’t sure why.
“Where are you off to?” Rick asked.
“Oh, hi, Rick. Hey, Derek. Library. I’ve gotta print some stuff off.”
Rick reached into the back pocket of his pastel shorts. “I’ve got a huge credit on my
student card if you want to use it.” He opened his wallet.
I put my hand up. “No. That’s okay. I just funded mine ... but thanks anyway.”
He put his wallet back. “I also have a decent printer in my room if you ever need to use it.”
I took a step closer to the library door. “Okay, thanks.”
“I’ll text you and Amy later,” Derek said as the two of them wandered off.
The library housed a small café where you could get Starbucks if you wanted. Rachael was
standing in line when I passed by. I wasn’t in the mood for one of her snide comments, so I
walked fast so she wouldn’t see me.
I found a study area, sat, and opened my laptop. There was another note waiting for me
from Scott: “Thinking about you.”
I sent him a quick text. “I got your note. Thinking about you, too, handsome.” If Amy
could have a nickname for everyone, so could I. My mother had often referred to my father as
handsome, so it seemed fitting.
An hour of writing, and I hadn’t made much progress, although I had at least put together
an outline for my paper, which was due on Monday. I chose the topic: Influence of Classical
Greece on the Foundation of Western Civilization. Mind blown. History had never been my subject, but it was part of my core curriculum. Scott had bragged about Jason being a history
genius, and I wondered if he had any tips that could help me remember this stuff. I took a bottle
of water out of my backpack to quench my thirst while thinking about it. I screwed the top back
on my water bottle and sent my file to the printer. As I crossed the library, I thought about Rick’s
offer. Did he honestly think I would go to his room to print a document? I swiped my student
card and then went through the process of printing my stuff.
When I returned to my study area, my laptop was off, the screen blank. It wouldn’t power
up, either. Battery? No, I had just charged it right before I left my dorm. My water bottle was
three-quarters full when I had left it a few minutes ago. Now it was empty. A few droplets
beaded on the keyboard. I picked up the now empty bottle, which was still upright, not tipped
over, its cap secured in place. Had someone opened my bottle, tipped it over, and put the cap
back on? What the? I looked around. Nothing about this situation made sense.
That night, I walked to my car to do a grocery run. When I got there, my windows were
marred with pink marker, the words “Watch your back,” in all caps. The windshield, the side
windows, and the back. They were all covered.
Considering my hypersensitivity to dangerous situations, it was like throwing gasoline on
the tinderbox that was my PTSD.

Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway of Dirty Little Secret by Rachael Brownell

Series: Lake State University Series
Author: Rachael Brownell
Genre: College Romance/Brother’s Best Friend Romance
Cover Design Credit: Emily Wittig of Emily Wittig Designs
Release Date: September 9, 2021
Goodreads

He’s my brother’s best friend.
Which makes me off limits.
My brother made that clear to all his friends the summer I turned fourteen.
That didn’t stop me from falling in love with him. From dreaming about sharing my future with him. From wondering what it would be like to be with him.
It didn’t stop the heated looks he’d send me when no one was paying attention. Or how he always found a way to be near me, to touch me. To protect me.
For six years we were fought against the waves of desire but the current kept pushing us toward one another.
Then I had him.
We collided with hurricane force. Our connection… explosive. It felt right, being with him. With the first kiss, I gave him my heart. With the first touch, I gave him my body. When I saw the love in his eyes, I handed over my soul.
I should have known it was too good to last, though. The next morning, he was gone, and my heart shattered. I left it on his bedroom floor as I did the walk of shame.
It’s been nine months since I laid eyes on him.
Yes, I’ve been avoiding this moment. But I can do this. I can fight my attraction for one night. Even if the moment I see him again, I know that night is going to come rushing back to me, along with the days and weeks of agony that followed.
Because he still owns every piece of me.

My thoughts:

Dirty Little Secrets is the first book in the Lake State University series.  It's a sweet NA best friend's sister romance.  I did enjoy Willow and Finn's story.  They have had feelings for each other for a while and it showed.  I loved them together.  I also loved the other cast of characters in the book and look forward to their stories.  What I didn't love was the length of the book.  The "keeping a secret from Willow's brother" plot went on a bit too long for me. It slowed the book down.  Still, it was a fun story and one I do recommend.

Review: Frat House Confessions: Ridge by Bethany Lopez

Author: Bethany Lopez
Narrators:Vanessa Edwin & Tim Paige
Publisher: Bethany Lopez Author
Publication Date: April 2020

She has a broken heart and revenge on her mind...

Last year Karrie was riding high. She had a boyfriend she loved, a softball scholarship, and the best roommate a girl could have.
When it turned out her man was a lying, cheating ballsack, she may have gone off the rails a bit.
Now, it's a new year and Karrie's ready to build herself back up and move on to bigger and better things.
Still, a little revenge would go a long way in helping the healing process.

He's got a plan for revenge that will suit them both...

Ridge is used to being the BMOC. Sergeant of Arms of his frat and the ability to land any chick within snapping distance has made life pretty easy for him.
His home life is another story. He and his brothers are in the middle of a battle between his socialite mother and asshole father.
Ridge is looking for a stand-in to placate his mother and her matchmaking ways, and he has a feeling he's just met the girl he can perfectly mold.

This makeover has nothing to do with love and everything to do with Karrie and Ridge using each other to get what they want. What starts as a ruse soon becomes an attraction they cannot deny. When it's all said and done, they'll both have more to confess than a need for revenge.

Frat House Confessions: Ridge is the first in the Frat House Confessions series.  The aspect of the 'confessions" comes in the form of a frat brother who everyone goes to for advice.  This one is Ridge and Karrie's story.  This was a nice return to the "New Adult" genre that seems to be missing lately.  The story has the fake boyfriend trope.   Ridge and Karrie were great together.  Karrie really threw Ridge for a loop because she was unlike any other girl he had every hooked up with.  What I really liked about this relationship was that they waited to become intimate.  I felt like they really became friends first.   I was rooting for them.

I listened to the audio-book for this one.  I thought it was well done.  The narrators did an excellent job.  One of my favorite things about audio-books is when there is more than one narrator.  That aspect really enhanced the listening experience for this one.    The next book is Wes's story.  I look forward to reading it.

Blog Tour: Review of The Best Mistake by Cookie O'Gorman

Title: The Best Mistake
Author: Cookie O’Gorman
Genre: Contemporary Romance

About The Best Mistake:
Honor Tierney just wants one night with the playboy.
One hot, steamy, meaningless hookup, and then she'll happily go back to reading her favorite books, studying to be an accountant and writing for the campus-paper-nobody-reads.  Too bad she ends up in the wrong bed, with the wrong brother…who gives her the hottest night of her life.
Archer O'Brien just wants to play ball.
Well that, and for his brothers to stop acting out, so he won't have to worry 24/7.  As the oldest O'Brien and team captain, it's his duty to make sure they don't drink too much, party too much, or get in too much trouble.  But when she walks into his bedroom—mistaking him for his brother—life throws him a curveball.
She's determined to guard her heart.  He's not giving up.
And when Honor gets assigned to cover the Wolves baseball team, it's game on.
This new adult sports romance features one hot (and hilarious) case of mistaken identity and a sexy set of brothers guaranteed to make you swoon.
Sometimes, the best mistakes are worth making.

My thoughts:

I have to say, I am on a roll lately with great romance reads.  The Best Mistake was no mistake at all.   This book features Archer and Honor.  Archer is the oldest of six kids and an all star baseball player at his college.  He plays with three of his brothers as well.  The O'Briens are stars of the field.  Honor is a book worm who is more at home with books and her book boyfriends. (I was the same way in college!).

I found this to be a really sweet romance with an adorable and sexy hero and a smart adorable heroine making for a super adorable couple.  Archer is definitely on my book boyfriend list. Even though he was a bit misguided toward the end.  There were some great laugh out loud moments.  I loved the banter with Archer and his siblings.  I also loved Honor's friends.  I'm hoping that the other characters get their own stories really soon!  Please let it be Chase next.  I want him to find his soul mate.  I highly recommend this one!

After I Fall by Jessica Scott

Author: Jessica Scott
Publisher:
Date of publication: March 2017

Her entire life has been a lie. Being with Eli is the most honest thing she’s ever done.

Parker Hauser lives the perfect life and knows exactly where she's been and where she's going. Parker has to be perfect. Perfect grades, perfect body, perfect life.

Until she meets Eli Winter.

Eli throws her entire life into chaos when he denies her the one thing she wants from him.

One chance encounter stokes her desire for the man who refused to touch her and left her questioning everything.

When Parker tries to help his new business, the spotlight turns on Eli's military record. And the war he's tried to forget may  destroy them both.

After I Fall is the third in the Falling series.  I have really been a fan of this series and this one makes a great addition.  It definitely can be read as a stand alone, so if you are new to the series with this one, you won't be missing anything.  This is Parker and Eli's story.  I have been waiting for Eli's story because I was intrigued by him in the previous book.

Ms. Scott always knows how to get right to the heart of her characters.  My heart was just breaking for Parker throughout this book.  I can't imagine what it is like to feel helpless and trapped in a life you don't want.  I was so rooting for her to break free and to realize she was strong enough to do it.  I loved her and Eli together.  The only thing I wish was that I had gotten more of Eli's background. I wanted to get to know him more than I did. Essentially, I wish this story was longer because I loved it so much.

I definitely recommend this one.  Fans of this author won't be disappointed.  I also know new readers will soon discover a new favorite author.  I can;t wait to see what is next.

The Enchantment of Emma Fletcher by L.D. Crichton

By: L.D. Crichton
Publisher: Pocket Star EBooks
Publication Date: March 13, 2017
ISBN: 9781501152313

After Emma Fletcher is viciously attacked and left for dead, she flees to her old childhood hometown where she’s confronted with bitter memories of her damaged past and alcoholic mother. Emma is determined to make her stay temporary and get out with minimal emotional damage. What she doesn’t count on is Tristan Banks: auto mechanic, coffee addict, and town hottie with dark secrets of his own.

Tristan’s track record of saving girls has historically led to failure. The last thing he needs is trouble in the form of a leggy brunette with an attitude, but when he starts to fall for Emma, Tristan realizes the only way he can save her is to help her save herself.

In The Enchantment of Emma Fletcher, Emma has come to live with her mother after an attack to try to get her life back.  In reconnecting with old friend, she gets to know Tristan again.  He is dealing with his own demons.  They may just be able to find salvation in each other.

I really enjoyed this one.  I guess it would fall into the New Adult category since the characters are younger.  But they honestly felt much more mature than their age, which was refreshing.  I loved watching Emma and Tristan go from friends to lovers. One of my favorite scenes was the photo booth scene.  It was such a sigh worthy romantic moment! I also loved the secondary love story of Marley and Mateo.  Can you say "too cute"? I don't want to give away too much of the plot.  I'll just leave you with a recommendation that you definitely check this debut book out.

See what others are saying:

“The character development will draw readers into the story and have them rushing to find out what happens…Verdict: Romance readers who prefer a love story with a thriller twist will enjoy this page-turner. It’s perfect for those jumping from YA contemporary romance to more adult fiction.”
Library Journal STARRED REVIEWstarred review star

“L.D. Crichton has written a compelling story of overcoming tragedy and moving forward. I truly experienced the wide range of emotions felt by all the characters, as all feelings are conveyed with genuineness. THE ENCHANTMENT OF EMMA FLETCHER is heartfelt and very realistic…THE ENCHANTMENT OF EMMA FLETCHER is emotionally rewarding…L.D. Crichton has created an interesting story about true-to-life people, and I look forward to more books from this author.”

Mayhem by Jamie Shaw

Author: Jamie Shaw
Publisher: Avon
Date of publication: January 2015

When college freshman Rowan Michaels meets gorgeous, up-and-coming rock star Adam Everest, she knows a player like him is the last thing she needs after her ex-boyfriend shattered her heart. But she can't stop thinking about the kiss they shared on his tour bus.
On the first day of school, Rowan is stunned when Adam saunters into her French class. He's soon failing miserably, and, on a whim, she offers to tutor him. But Adam doesn't recognize her as a makeup-free, glasses-clad college student—a far cry from the beautiful, mysterious "Peach" he met at his concert.

Mayhem is the first in a series about an up and coming band finding love.  It's very much a new Adult book as the characters are under the age of 22.  Rowan has just started her freshman year in college when she catches her boyfriend cheating on her.  Adam is an upcoming rock star who has no shortage of women, but after meeting "Peach", he can't get her out of his mind.

I thought this was a sweet story.  I liked that Rowan and Adam actually become friends before really becoming lovers. In actuality, I thought this was fairly mild on the steam level for a "New Adult" book.  Was it anything new that I haven't read before?  Not really, but I ended up enjoying watching these two characters fall in love with each other. The one thing I would have really liked was to have Adam's side throughout the book, not just in the epilogue.  The peripheral characters in the book were amusing, especially the boys in the band.  I want to read their stories now.

Perfect Kind of Trouble by Chelsey Fine

Author: Chelsea Fine
Publisher: Forever
Date of publication:  June 2014

Twenty-one-year-old Kayla Turner has lost everything. After spending most of her life taking care of her ailing mother, she just wants to spot a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. So when her late father-a man she barely knew-leaves her an inheritance, she finally breathes a sigh of relief . . . until she learns the inheritance comes with strings. Strings in the form of handsome playboy Daren Ackwood, her father's protégé. To see any of her inheritance, she's forced to team up with him. From his expensive car to those sexy dimples, Kayla's seen his type before. But Daren isn't who he seems to be . . .

Struggling to make amends for his family's mistakes, Daren has a life more Oliver Twist than Richie Rich these days. He's beyond grateful that James Turner included him in his will, but working with Turner's princess of a daughter to fulfill his cryptic last wish is making Daren wonder if being broke is really so bad. Still, she's just as beautiful as she is stubborn, and the more time he spends with Kayla, the less it feels right being without her. Soon Daren and Kayla begin to wonder if maybe the best gift Kayla's dad could have left them . . . was each other.

Perfect Kind of Trouble is the second  in the "Finding Fate" series.  I read the first book, Best Kind of Broken a while back and finally got around to this one.  The book does very well as a stand alone as most of the characters from the first book aren't really in this one.  This is Kayla and Darin's story.

If you can ignore the ridiculousness of the couple having to be handcuffed while in a wild scavenger hunt in order to inherit their fortune, then this is actually a very sweet story.  Kayla and Darin both have preconceived ideas about the other person.  Being forced to spend time so closely together allows them to really see much deeper than the surface.  I liked both characters immensely. Although, Darin did kind of have to grow on me a little in the beginning.  But in the end I did enjoy the story.

Do they find the key to their inheritance?  You'll have to go on the hunt with them to find out.  It's definitely worth taking the journey with them.

But three days before their wedding, the twenty-year-old groom-to-be suddenly died from an unknown heart condition, destroying his would-be-bride’s world. If it hadn’t been for their best friend, Jagger, Grey never would have made it through those last two years to graduation. He’s the only one who understands her pain, the only one who knows what it’s like to force yourself to keep moving when your dreams are shattered. Jagger swears he’ll always be there for her, but no one has ever been able to hold on to him. He’s not the kind of guy to settle down.

It’s true that no one has ever been able to keep Jagger—because he’s only ever belonged to Grey. While everyone else worries over Grey’s fragility, he’s the only one who sees her strength. Yet as much as he wants Grey, he knows her heart will always be with Ben. Still they can’t deny the heat that is growing between them—a passion that soon becomes too hot to handle. But admitting their feelings for each other means they’ve got to face the past. Is being together what Ben would have wanted . . . or a betrayal of his memory that will eventually destroy them both?

When is comes to this author, I am usually hot or cold.  Usually I either love it or I hate it.  Letting Go actually fell somewhere in between.  I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it.  It ended up being just an OK read for me.  Grey, Ben and Jagger had been best friends since they were little.  Ben and Grey were supposed to get married. His sudden death changed everything.  Jagger had always been in love with Grey, but Ben got to her first.

I was  bit underwhelmed by this one.  I think that it was a bit too angsty for my taste.  The loss of a loved one is difficult and I did feel badly for both Grey and Jagger. The guilt over their feelings was misguided, but understandable.  I was rooting for them.  In fact, their relationship was the best part of the book.  It was the rest of it that I didn't care for.  The stalker, Jagger's mother, and the conflict with his sister made it all a bit over the top. It was just a little too much packed into the story. There is a little twist in the end that was a surprise.  I'll probably continue with the series as I would love to read about the other characters.  I just hope they have better covers than this one.  Whoever approved that one was not paying attention!

Blog Tour: Review and excerpt of Charged by Jay Crownover

Author: Jay Crownover
Publisher: William Morrow
Date of publication: May 24, 2016

Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson’s worlds have no reason to collide. Ever. Quaid is a high powered criminal attorney as slick as he is handsome. Avett is a pink-haired troublemaker with a bad attitude and a history of picking the wrong men.

When Avett lands in a sea of hot water because of one terrible mistake, the only person who can get her out of it is the insanely sexy lawyer. The last thing on earth she wants to do is rely on the no-nonsense attorney who thinks of her as nothing more than a nuisance. He literally has her fate in his hands. Yet there is something about him that makes her want to convince him to loosen his tie and have a little fun…with her.

Quaid never takes on clients like the impulsive young woman with a Technicolor dye job. She could stand to learn a hard lesson or two, but something about her guileless hazel eyes intrigues him. Still, he’s determined to keep their relationship strictly business. But doing so is becoming more impossible with each day he spends with her.

As they work side-by-side, they’ll have to figure out a way to get along and keep their hands off each other—because the chemistry between them is beyond charged.

Charged, the second book in the Saints of Denver series, is another amazing story to come out of the wonderful imagination of Ms. Crownover.  Yeah, I'm a fan.  In her introduction, she talks about giving a story to a character that no one really likes. She hopes readers will eventually like that character by the end of the story.  I will admit that Avett was one of those characters for me.  I didn't like her in previous books. But after reading Charged, I'm convinced she deserved a story.

I devoured this book.  I loved Avett and Quaid together.  At first glance, it looks like opposites attracting. Yet, when you look under the surface, they are more alike than they seem at first. The chemistry between the two was off the charts!  I'm not going to give away any of Avett's secrets.  Just know that after hearing them you will be rooting for her as much as I was.

One of the best parts of the books is a sneak peek into Church's thoughts.  After that scene, I can't wait to read his story.  I just wish I didn't have to wait until 2017!  Enjoy the exceprt from Charged below and make sure to check out the giveaway!

Excerpt:

Avett
I blew out a breath and felt that bottom I had careened onto reach up to embrace me even tighter. “It is what it is. I’ve let both my folks down a lot over the last few years but getting caught up with a guy that would rob the bar, a guy who could threaten my dad’s people.” I shook my head. “I deserve to rot.”
I was being overly dramatic but that’s how I felt. I deserved to sit in jail and so much worse than that. Self-pity was good company down here at rock bottom and I wasn’t ready to let go of the warmth it provided just yet.
He gave me a look I couldn’t read and headed for the door. “I’ll call your parents for you and see if we can have something in place before tomorrow. Working on your case will be a lot easier for both of us if you aren’t incarcerated. Remember, you need to listen to me, Ms. Walker. That’s the first rule in all of this.”
Panic hit me like a truck. What if he called my dad and my dad told him he’d had enough of his problematic daughter and her endless nonsense? What if he couldn’t love me anymore? Jail I could survive; losing my father for good, well, it would be the end of me.
Without thinking I jumped to my feet, which had the chains on both my hands and my legs rattling loudly, and two uniformed officers hurried into the room. I was about to make maybe the worst decision to date but I couldn’t stop the words from sliding off my tongue.
“Don’t call my dad!” Recklessness, thy name was Avett Walker.
The attorney turned around and looked at me like I had grown a second head. He didn’t say anything as the officers moved to either side of me and told me to calm down.
“You can’t call my dad.” The words sounded as panicked and as desperate as I felt on the inside.
His broad shoulders lifted and fell in a shrug like he really couldn’t give a shit that he was about to ruin my life…which was saying a hell of a lot considering where I was.
“I have to.” He sounded bored and impatient with my outburst.
I narrowed my eyes at him, and that vortex of awful, which I always seemed to be smack dab in the center of, started to spin faster and faster around me.
“Then you’re fired.” I saw the cops exchange a look and my rushed words had the blond man turning fully back around to look at me. “I don’t want your help. I don’t want anything from you.”
Finally, there was something other than indifference in his gaze. There was surprise, maybe a hint of admiration colliding with a huge splash of humor in the pale depths.
“Sorry, Ms. Walker, but you didn’t hire me, so that means you don’t get to fire me.” That grin of his, which should be registered as a deadly weapon, flashed across his face again as he watched me, and then he was gone.
