Publisher: Samhain PublishingDate of Publication: December 2012
Two men will stop at nothing to have her gift, her desire…and her love.
The Prophecy, Book 1
Years ago, with the healing abilities afforded by her blend of Aztec and extraterrestrial blood, Liz was free to do as she wished. Now she is trapped in a blood feud, forced to heal one of her clan’s most dangerous rivals so they can exploit his gift of prophecy. As she drapes her nude body over his, the rush of his returning strength overwhelms her, and his stunningly sensual caress pushes her to her sexual limit.
Zeke Neekoma never expected to hunger for a woman he’s supposed to hate, but now that he’s tasted her, he has no intention of denying himself the pleasure of her body—or of kidnapping his enemy’s most cherished plaything.  Brought to Zeke’s stronghold to heal his brother, Jacob, Liz surrenders her body’s most traitorous needs to the unrestrained desires of two powerful men. And the brothers fill the lonely void she has too long endured.  But her clan doesn’t intend to let her go without a fight…and the ecstasy that binds Liz to her lovers could be the thing that breaks them.
Excerpt:
Naked, he lay in the center of the king-sized bed. His breaths were quiet, his eyes closed, legs sprawled, one arm draped over his head as though he was sleeping.

The bullet holes in his muscular left pec contradicted that notion.

Forcing down a swallow, Liz pulled her attention from his wounds—three perfect black circles—to his face.

Her lips parted on a quiet sigh. Rarely had she seen a man wear such a look of serenity. So unlike the terror she’d witnessed on Carreon’s features or those of his men when they’d been so close to death.

Zeke Neekoma was different. The words boyish and innocent came to mind, which Liz dismissed quickly.
Looking to be in his early thirties, he was no boy. Nor was he innocent. His size, surely six-three, his sharp, masculine features and powerful form were perfect for battle against men and carnal sin with women.

Heat suffused Liz, making her limbs feel heavy and weak. She recalled what Carreon and his men had told her about Zeke, no doubt a mixture of truth and lies. Not knowing which was which, she regarded his sinewy legs, long cock and weighty balls as she moved deeper into the dimly lit room. Spanish-style lamps created pools of honeyed light, giving the space a sacred feel one might experience in a church. The cherry-wood four-poster dominated the sparsely furnished chamber, while a series of leather wing chairs—reserved for observers—circled the bed.

The man who’d been guarding Zeke left the room. Carreon and his men went to their seats, their weight causing the chairs’ legs to scrape against the polished hardwood floor.

For one foolish moment, Liz thought the intrusive noise would cause Zeke to open his eyes and lose his blissful expression. That he’d ask why they’d pulled him from such blessed rest and what appeared to be happiness.

This man didn’t want to be healed. Liz knew it in her soul; saw it in the upward curve of his beautiful mouth. Was he the same as her father, tired of fighting? Or was he welcoming the end so he could reunite with someone he’d loved?

His parents and siblings, perhaps…or a wife.

Liz studied his cock, its root nestled in a bush of black curls, his testicles lightly furred with short, dark hairs. Ones many women had surely licked, tasted, enjoyed, given his rough good looks and virile form.
Images rose in Liz’s mind. She pictured him standing before her, his size and manner imposing but not threatening, allowing genuine arousal, not feigned obedience, to guide the act. On her knees at his feet, she’d tend to him, cradling his sac in her palm, allowing its wrinkled skin to rest against her birthmark that proved she had the healing gift.

Would he sense the spark of energy her touch generated? Would he pull her power into himself?

Throwback Thursday: The Cutting Edge by Linda Howard

Author: Linda Howard
First published in 1985 by Harlequin

Can love survive the ultimate test?  - Brett Rutland, Carter Engineering’s top troubleshooter, is sent to the L.A. office to crack a case of embezzlement. Brett’s a hard man, so it hit him like a sledgehammer when he fell in love with Tessa Conway.  Half the men in the office had been in love with her for years, but Brett was the first she’d loved in return. Their love is perfect, too perfect to last. And when Brett discovers the identity of the embezzler, his whole world is about to come crashing down . . .

Ms. Howard, I love your books, but with this one, I was not feeling the love.  The Cutting Edge has one of the worst alpha males I have ever read.  Now, I love a good alpha male.  Brett was not an alpha, he was just an ass-hat   The things he says to Tessa throughout the book just had my jaw dropping.  Don't even get me started on Tessa.  She was such a weak minded wimpy female that I had a hard time finding much to like about her.  Their love story was just unbelievable.

The mystery of who is setting up Tessa was pretty easy to figure out.  I thought the resolution was lame and totally unrealistic.  I kept shaking my head at the "evidence" the DA had against Tessa.  There is no way they would have pressed charges with the iffy evidence that they had against her.  I know this was written in 1985, but still it was a stretch.  There are better books out there by this author, I would suggest you find another one to read and skip this one.

Blog Tour: Toying with Temptation by Madison Martin

Please welcome author, Madison Martin while she is promoting her latest book,Toying with Temptation.   While you are here, check out the excerpt from the book after my review.

Author: Madison Martin
Publisher: Chances Press
Date of Publication: October 2011

Driven, business savvy Hailey Burton, Vice President of Tryton Financial Institute, has been put in charge of running what could be her first ever failure: the company's Christmas Eve toy drive. Toys and Christmas are beyond Hailey's expertise, but when she's offered the chance for the promotion she's been waiting for if she succeeds, her competitive spirit kicks into high gear.

When every company in Los Angeles turns her down, desperation leads her to Quinn Matheson. Ten years ago, Hailey chose a prosperous career over Quinn, but as she falls for him all over again, she can't deny that they make a good team in business...and more. This second time around, is she finally ready to make the leap and become his partner in love?

This is one of those novels that I just had to stay up late to finish.  I paid for it the next day, but it was worth it.  Toying with Temptation is a good and well written book.  It's not a long story, but I didn't mind that so much.    There was a sufficient amount of back story that I felt comfortable with the characters. Hailey and Quinn were once in love, until Hailey left him at the alter ten years earlier.  Now she needs his help with a benefit that will help her company gain some good ground in the public eye.  Through working together, can they find their way back to love?  I loved these two together. I loved their HEA.  I was happy that they were able to finally get to the heart of why Hailey walked away.  This is the first book I have read by this author.  I know I will be seeking out some of her other works!

Excerpt:

“Trust me. I never thought we’d be in this…er, position.” Hailey Burton smoothed her hands over the skirt of her brand new Armani suit to keep her hands from shaking. Quinn Matheson could never see how nervous she was. She wouldn't let him. It would add further humiliation to her unfortunate circumstance, and she felt humiliated enough.

Quinn, the King of Matheson Toys and the picture of confidence, silently appraised her from behind the huge oak desk in his office.

“I mean, we've been in every other posi—” She coughed before she finished a sentence that could get her in big trouble. Whatever “positions” she and Quinn may have found themselves in ten years ago, it was too long ago to matter now. Wasn't it?

She stiffened her spine and felt herself growing hotter by the second. A trickle of sweat began to run down the small of her back. Why fight it? Her brand new, one-of-a kind suit, bought for a special occasion, was headed straight for the cleaners.

Why did she think this would be easy? Why did she think she’d have the upper hand? And why was Quinn sitting there staring at her, refusing to say anything?

He watched her with calculating dark brown eyes, noticing every time she fidgeted or said something stupid. It was beginning to drive her crazy.

“Are you going to say something?”

He shrugged. “It’s your meeting.”

In her eight years of experience, she’d met with and given presentations to presidents and corporate execs from companies all over the world. She always acted with cool confidence in situations that made tough men sweat, and not one minute of it ever fazed her.

What did faze her was sitting here in front of her ex, begging for tens of thousands of toys for her company’s first Christmas toy drive in five years.

Christmas was beyond the limits of her expertise. In her entire life she’d celebrated maybe one or two. Last year, she’d spent the holiday on a conference call closing a deal with a company in Hong Kong. The year before that, she’d been in New York collecting leads for a new account. Her boss knew Christmas was out of her league, but he also knew she never gave her projects less than a hundred and twenty percent, and he’d saddled her with the toy drive despite her protests.

If the promise of moving up the Tryton Financial Institute corporate ladder weren't waiting for her at the other end of this, she’d have told her boss to forget it. But as usual, the desire for success was stronger than…well, the desire for anything else.

Stronger, even, than the will to never see the man she’d run out on ten years ago. As much as she never thought she’d have the guts to look him in the face again, that promotion was staring her down…waiting. Begging for her to come and get it.

Review & Giveaway: Political Suicide by Michael Palmer

By:  Michael Palmer
published by:  St. Martin's Press
publish date:  December 11, 2012

Dr. Lou Welcome is back in this heart stopping medical thriller. A desperate phone call embroils Lou in scandal and murder involving Dr. Gary McHugh, known around the Capital as the “society doc.” Lou has been supervising McHugh, formerly a black-out drinker, through his work with the Physician Wellness Office. McHugh has been very cavalier about his recovery, barely attending AA and refusing a sponsor. Now, McHugh has been found unconscious in his wrecked car after visiting a patient of his, the powerful Congressman Elias Colston, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Soon after McHugh awakens in the hospital ER, Colston's wife returns home to find her husband shot dead in their garage.

Something about McHugh's story has Lou believing he is telling the truth, that the Congressman was dead when he arrived and before he blacked out. Lou agrees to look into matters, but when he encounters motive, method and opportunity he is hard pressed to believe in his friend—that is until a deadly high-level conspiracy begins to unravel, and Lou acquires information that makes him the next target.

I was a big fan of Oath of Office.  Dr. Lou Welcome is a great character and I like the job he has.  I was happy to find out he was a returning character in Political Suicide.  Not only is Dr. Welcome a great character, but I particularly like the relationship he has with his teenage daughter and she is also back in Political Suicide.

I think fans of Michael Palmer will be happy with this book.  All Palmer's books are great and this one was up to par.

Want to find out?  We're giving away a copy!

This copy will be coming from the publicist so US shipping address only please!

Just leave a comment with a valid email address at the end of this post.  One winner will be picked randomly on 12/18/12.

Blog Tour: Blissful Lies by Jennifer Brown-Thomas

Author: Jennifer Brown-Thomas
Publisher: Helm Publishing
Date of Publication: January 2012

Things are often not what they seem in the decadent lifestyles of the rich and famous. Life can be messy and at times people do what feels wrong, because in the end it may turn out to be the best decision ever made. A close bond between 5 lifelong friends, now of college age, find the limits of their relationships are tested when multiple secrets and lies begin to surface, which ultimately leave them wondering if it is all too much to move forward as the family they once were. Forbidden love, drug dealing, date rape, betrayal, cheating, and more begin to unravel the strong ties between friends. Can they overcome secrets which warrant a very difficult life altering response?

When I read the synopsis for Blissful Lies, I was really looking forward to reading it.  Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations.  This book just really didn't do it for me.  I liked the concept and I could see where the author was trying to go with the novel, but it didn't reach its destination.  I think with more editing and revision, this book could have been the book I was hoping to read.   I always regret having to write bad reviews, but I believe in being honest.

I could find nothing likable about the characters.  Addison thinks her husband is cheating on her and is devastated. Jackson, her son's best friend,  professes his love for her.  So, she decides to have an affair with him and they are all of a sudden in love.  Never mind the fact that she has known him since he was little and she is best friends with his mother.   (That added a big ick factor for me).  I couldn't blame Jackson's mother for freaking out.

I'm not sure if it was the editing or maybe it was my version of the book.  There were odd scene changes and time frames that made no sense   For instance, one scene takes place in the morning, then within what seemed like an hour's time, two of the characters are having dinner. Also, at times, I felt like I was reading a movie script turned into a book. The dialogue felt awkward and not realistic. The friends are supposed to be in their early 20s but they are often spoken to and reprimanded like they are teenagers. The book is labeled as a romantic thriller.  In a way, I could see why, but the "thriller' part doesn't show up until almost the end of the book with no sense of foreboding or indication that it is coming.  The revelations at the end were too far-fetched and unbelievable.

Blissful Lies has gotten good reviews from other readers.  So, I urge you to try it and see what you think.  It just didn't work  for me.  This book has been made into a movie by the author.  Check out the trailer below.

About the author:
At just 25 years old, Jennifer Brown-Thomas is a celebrated book author and movie director. Her first novel, Blissful Lies, combines both of her passions.

At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, she presented Blissful Lies (the movie) starring Emmy award winning actress, Leann Hunley. YTINIFNI Pictures is working to bring the film to DVD and on-demand television this spring.

Jennifer is a married, Texas Christian University graduate and mother of one. Her newest venture, LBT Enterprises, is set to launch a fragrance, a children's clothing line and more.

Watch for more novels from Jennifer - the next on its way is Vindictive Grounds. In February, Jennifer will begin directing the film version of this novel. She says, "It definitely has more of the explicit sexual contact comparable to Fifty Shades of Grey."

Review: Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

Author:Deborah Harkness
Publisher: Viking Adult
Date of Publication: July 2012

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana and Matthew into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens.

Shadow of Night was one of my most anticipated books  of 2012.  I absolutely loved the first book, A Discovery of Witches. (My review)  Unfortunately, I can't really say that about the sequel. Since I have mixed feelings about the book,  I'll break it down into what I liked and disliked.

What I liked: I did like the overall story.  The love story between Diana and Matthew was strengthened in this book.  We get to see their love grow deeper and they learn so much about each other.  We also finally get to see them consummate their marriage.

There are a few surprises about Diana and Matthew that were interesting.  The truth of Diana's powers should prove useful in the final book.  I also loved seeing how things they did in the past affected the future. Kind of like the butterfly effect.  The glimpses of the present time definitely elude to major events.  I wonder if we will see what transpired while Diana and Matthew were gone in the next book.  I don't want to say what these things are as they would definitely be major spoilers.

What I didn't like:  First, the book was LONG.  It comes in at about 22hours of audio time or 500+ pages.  While I don't normally mind long books, this one definitely dragged in places.  Matthew and Diana spend the entire book in the past.  I felt there were parts of the book that really did nothing to advance the story.  They go back in time for Diana to find a witch to teach her how to use her magic as well as look for the mysterious Ashmole 782.  Once they get there, it seemed to take forever for them to get to her magic lessons and to find the book. They also meet up with so many people, that it was hard at times to keep the characters straight.  Also, for a group of people who want to stay hidden from the humans, it seems a lot of people in the past know of their existence.

I don't recommend reading this one without first reading A Discovery of Witches.  It picks up right where the other left off. Any reader without the background of the first book would probably find themselves lost.  There is really no recap until well into the middle of the book.  It had been over a year since I read the first one and even I found myself having a hard time orienting myself to the story and characters at first.

So, I guess you could say I have so-so feeling about the book.  I'm hoping the last book captures magic of the first book.  The next one, an as yet unnamed book, comes out some time in 2013.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Review: The Line Between Here and Gone by Andrea Kane

Author: Andrea Kane
Publisher: Mira (Harlequin)
Date of publication: June 2012

The man she loved is gone forever. The child she lives for could be next. Each day is a struggle for Amanda Gleason's newborn son as he battles a rare immune deficiency. Justin's best chance for a cure lies with his father, who was brutally murdered before Amanda even realized she carried his child.

Or was he?

One emailed photo changes everything, planting a seed of doubt that Amanda latches on to for dear life: a recent photo of a man who looks exactly like Paul. Could Justin's father be alive? The mother in her is desperate to find out. But tracking down a ghost when every second counts is not for amateurs.

The Line Between Here and Gone is the second book by Andrea Kane featuring the Forensic Instincts team.  They first appeared in the book, The Girl Who Disappeared Twice.  (My review).  Most people could probably read this as a stand alone book, but I would suggest reading the first one to see how the team got started and the motivation behind what they do.

This time around, they are asked to find Amanda Gleason's former lover.  He is probably the only one who can save their infant son's life.  The problem is that most people think he is dead  Once they start looking into his life, the team finds there is much more than meets the eye.  This story had a ton of twists and unexpected turns. It is one of those books that has you on the edge of your seat. As I was reading, I could feel the urgency to find this man.  I could also feel the hope and desperation of Amanda as she watched Justin fight for his life.   It was heartbreaking!

I enjoyed this story as much as the first book.  I love all of the characters of the team.  They are all different, yet they mesh well together. I can't wait to see how the relationship between Claire and Ryan works out in the next book.  I was also happy to see Hutch appear in this one.  My hope is that he and Kasey will be able to spend more time together in the next book.

I definitely recommend this series.  If you haven't discovered the Forensic Instincts team, what are you waiting for?

Blog Tour: The Laws of Love by Lisa White

Author: Lisa White
Publisher: Crimson Romance
Date of publication: July 2012

Because having it all does not necessarily mean having it all at once…

In a small, Virginia town where fly-fishing is the favorite pastime and Hampton Steel is essentially the only employer, Associate General Counsel Livi Miller believes she has reached the top rung of Hampton Steel’s corporate ladder. With her alcoholic boss retiring soon, Livi is the presumptive heir to Hampton Steel’s general counsel position. However, in the midst of proving herself promotion-worthy, Livi’s high school sweetheart, Jake Cooper, returns from Iraq and causes long-lost butterflies to alight in Livi’s emotionally charged stomach. The resulting loss of her promotion to slimy newcomer Edward Winston combines with her rekindled feelings for Jake to place Livi on track to choose between her career and her heart. If she chooses Hampton Steel, she saves her hometown. If she chooses Jake, she saves her butterflies as well as herself.

Laws of Love is a pretty quick and enjoyable read.  While I enjoyed the story overall, I wish it had been longer.  There were times when I felt like I was missing back story and times when I wish the story had expanded or explored further.   Livi is a driven career woman, who is hoping to get a promotion.  Jake is back in town for what seems to be an extended visit after leaving the military. Livi and Jake were very sweet together.  I am always a sucker for long lost loves.  I only wish there had been more of them together. I was confused by Jake's reaction and quickness to walk away from the woman he loved when she was working too hard.  It gave me less confidence in the HEA.  Especially when Jake hadn't indicated he was staying around for the long haul.

The suspense part of the book was interesting.  I almost liked that better than the romance.  There was a nice twist toward the end that I didn't anticipate.  I definitely think Laws of Love is worth a read.  This is the first book I have read by the author.  I look forward to reading more from her!

Throwback Thursday: Scandal by Amanda Quick

Author: Amanda Quick
First published in 1991 by Bantam

From a stately country house in Hampshire to the dazzling drawing rooms of London Society, comes an exquisite tale of an elfin beauty, a vengeful lord, and a sweet love that is sheer poetry.

If you can ignore the repetitiveness of the two terms,"Bloody Hell" and "Higher Plane" , Scandal isn't a bad book.  The story was fairly entertaining.

Simon is a man bent on revenge who marries Emily as a means to get it.  Emily, for me, was a puzzling character.  She is pretty naive in the ways of the world and likes to see the best in everyone.  However, she is very smart when it comes to business affairs.  I had a hard time wrapping my brain around her.  Just when I thought she would react one way to a situation, she ended up doing the complete opposite.  I think that enhanced the story though.

I was fun to watch Simon realize he really isn't cold hearted, especially when it comes to Emily.  I loved the ending.  Emily's father got what he deserved in my opinion.  If you missed this early work by Amanda Quick ( AKA Jayne Anne Krentz)  Why not give it a go?  Maybe it will take you to a higher plane of existence!

Through to You by Emily Hainsworth

by:  Emily Hainsworth
published by:  Balzer + Bray
publish date:  October 2, 2012

Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend, Viv, died. He’d give anything to have just one more glimpse of her.

This was one of those where I suspect the audiobook may not have been the best route to take.  It was narrated by Jesse Bernstein who if you aren't familiar with the name also did the Percy Jackson audiobooks.  So, just by associating that narrator with those books brought the maturity level down a little bit.  Plus, he sort of read Through to You in a little bit immature way.  Like the character Mike, I think if I had read his words in the book, I would have given him a lot more gravitas (like that word?).

That said, I liked the story.  It was a nice departure from all the post-apocalyptic/dystopian that I usually read.  It also wasn't too romancey (another awesome word).

It tells the story of Cam suffering since his girlfriend Viv died.  At the scene of the accident where she died he hears a voice and sees a girl.  The girls isn't Viv, but someone name Nina.  She's from an alternate dimension or parallel world.  Everything is almost exactly the same.  Cam finds a place where he thinks he can finally be happy, but Nina isn't telling him everything and their time is running out.

It's a YA romance, so there's a little bit of a love triangle going on.  It's not a typical triangle, so it didn't bother me too much.  There wasn't too much in the way of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll so I think it's ok for most YAs.
