Review: The Apple Orchard by Susan Wiggs

Author: Susan Wiggs
Publisher: Mira (Harlequin)
Date of puiblication: April 2013

Tess Delaney makes a living restoring stolen treasures to their rightful owners. People like Annelise Winther, who refuses to sell her long-gone mother's beloved necklace—despite Tess's advice. To Annelise, the jewel's value is in its memories.

But Tess's own history is filled with gaps: a father she never met, a mother who spent more time traveling than with her daughter. So Tess is shocked when she discovers the grandfather she never knew is in a coma. And that she has been named in his will to inherit half of Bella Vista, a hundred-acre apple orchard in the magical Sonoma town called Archangel.

The rest is willed to Isabel Johansen. A half sister she's never heard of.

Susan Wiggs latest book was a wonderful story about family and hidden secrets.  I really enjoyed The Apple Orchard. Tess Delaney has grown up not knowing her father.  She is a successful finder of antiques.  Her life is very busy and she only has her eyes on the next promotion and treasure hunt.  When she finds out she has a whole other family that she never knew, her life is turned upside down. This is one of those books that reminds us all what is really important in life.  That what we really need to do is to stop and smell the roses (or apples) once in a while.  Take a breath and just be.  Tess's time at Bella Vista allows her to do just that.  As she discovers answers, she begins to see there is more to life than work.

There is not only a great romance (I loved Dominic!).  There is also a mastery.  In order to save the estate, Tess and Isabel must find a lost Faberge egg that belongs to their grandfather.  While the book takes place mostly in the present, we are given glimpses into the past during WWII and the role the older generation played in the resistance.  At first it is hard to see how it will all fit together, but in the end it all wraps up nicely.  There is one twist that that I really liked and made the ending sweeter.

I definitely recommend The Apple Orchard.  I loved the ending and Tess and Dominic's HEA.  I hope that Isabel gets her own story!

The Caretaker

by: A.X. Ahmad
published by:  Minotaur Books
publish date:  May 21, 2013

Back in India, Ranjit Singh commanded an elite army squad. But that was years ago, before his Army career ended in dishonor, shattering his reputation. Driven from his homeland, he is now a caretaker on the exclusive resort island of Martha’s Vineyard, looking after the vacation homes of the rich and powerful.

Ranjit becomes the caretaker of a house owned by a powerful US Senator.  When Ranjit's apartment has a leak in a furnace, he moves his family into the Senator's unoccupied beach house.  One night some professionals break in and Ranjit's military training takes over.  He gets his family off Martha's Vineyard and back to the mainland, but they all become embroiled in a much bigger conspiracy involving the Senator and an antique doll.

This book was one that had a lot of really good points.  I really enjoyed the Martha's Vineyard location.  That part of the story was very well written.  I also liked the parts of the story about India and Ranjit's military history there.  However, about two-thirds of the way through I kinda lost interest in the story as a whole.

So I guess for a debut novel it wasn't too bad.  It might not have been an out of the park home run, but maybe like a good solid double.

Review & giveaway: A Beautiful Heist by Kim Foster

Giveaway details:  We are giving away one e-copy of A Beautiful Heist!  Just fill out the rafflecopter below to enter.  This is international and will run until June 20.  Good Luck!

Author: Kim Foster
Publisher: Kensington
Date of publication: June 6, 2013

Everyone has a talent. Some are just more legal than others. Cat Montgomery steals jewels for AB&T, the premier agency for thieves in Seattle. Career perks: good pay, great disguises, constant adrenaline rush. Drawbacks: the possibility of jail time…or worse. Now she’s taken on a lucrative side job—recovering a priceless Faberge egg for an alleged Romanov descendent.

Though Cat is working solo, there are plenty of interested players. Her FBI ex-boyfriend is nosing around, as is her former mentor-turned-nemesis. Then there’s the sexy art thief helping—or is he hindering?—her mission. If her luck holds out, this could be the case that allows Cat to retire with her conscience and her life intact. If not, it’ll be her last job for all the wrong reasons…

A Beautiful Heist is the debut novel by Kim Foster.  It's a quick read with fun characters and  lots of theft.  Cat is a jewel thief.  She works for a company who hire her out to steal valuable pieces of jewelry from rich people.  She has known since she was little that she has a gift for theft.  She also holds a deep down secret about her sister and the debt she feels she owes.  This is a major driving force behind why she keep stealing.

I really liked Cat.  She is a great thief but she is a little flighty.  She doesn't pay taxes for years because she assumes she needed to keep her pay a secret.  Even though the company give her W-2 forms every year.   She also manages to get herself into some amusing situations.  I laughed out loud at the golf tournament scene.  I liked the theft scenes.  Those were exciting and had me holding my breath, especially the final scene on top of Big Ben.  I also liked the little twist in the end.

My only wish was that we got to see more of Jack and Cat together.  This is the first in a series, so hopefully, their relationship will be explored a little more in the next book.  I definitely recommend this book.  It's a fun read and one worth checking out!

Throwback Thursday: The Wyndham Legacy by Catherine Coulter

Author: Catherine Coulter
First published in 1994 by Jove

Marcus Wyndham never asked to become the Earl of Chase. The Duchess never asked to be illegitimate. And neither of these two asked that their fates become so entwined.

Marcus is passionate, quick to rage, just as quick to laughter. He's tough, opinionated, domineering, known as the devil's own son. The Duchess is serene and aloof -- she has silence down to a fine art. She is always in control, her smiles as rare as bawdy jests in the pulpit. She is self-reliant once she realizes that a very special talent can make her so, a talent no one suspects.

I love Ms. Coulter's historical books.  I really wanted to like this one.  Unfortunately, I didn't.  In fact, it ended up being a DNF for me.  It was just boring. It seemed to take forever to get through a scene.  Some of the conversations were unnecessary and seemed to be included as filler.

I hated the hero.  Marcus was whiny and acted like a 3 year old who didn't get his own way.  The way he spoke to Duchess was appalling.  I had to turn it off.  I also didn't like the narrator.  Her accents were horrible and the way she read the book was annoying.  I guess you can't win them all.

Seduction by M.J. Rose

Author: M. J. Rose
Publisher: Atria Books
Date of publication: May 2013

In 1843, novelist Victor Hugo’s beloved nineteen-year-old daughter drowned. Ten years later, Hugo began participating in hundreds of séances to reestablish contact with her. In the process, he claimed to have communed with the likes of Plato, Galileo, Shakespeare, Dante, Jesus—and even the Devil himself. Hugo’s transcriptions of these conversations have all been published. Or so it was believed.

Recovering from her own losses, mythologist Jac L’Etoile arrives on the Isle of Jersey—where Hugo conducted the séances—hoping to uncover a secret about the island’s Celtic roots. But the man who’s invited her there, a troubled soul named Theo Gaspard, has hopes she’ll help him discover something quite different—Hugo’s lost conversations with someone called the Shadow of the Sepulcher.

Seduction takes place a few weeks after the events of The Book of Lost Fragrances.  There are a few mentions about the happenings of that book, but I think most people could get away with not reading it before this one.  I definitely liked this book a lot better than Lost Fragrances (my review).  It was more focused and moved along at a faster pace.

Jac L'Etoile has traveled to Jersey to help an old friend.  As she uncovers the truth of the past, she continues to have visions about possible past lives. I liked how it all tied together with Theo and his brother. As more and more visions come to her, she realizes that they hold the key to things in the present.  I felt like I got to know more about Jac in this one.  I really liked the realization that she has about herself and her abilities in the end.  I thought it made a lot of sense.

I definitely recommend this one.  I hope that Jac shows up again in the next book!

All the Summer Girls by Meg Donohue

Author: Meg Donohue
Publisher: William Morrow
Date of publication: May 2013

In Philadelphia, good girl Kate is dumped by her fiance the day she learns she is pregnant with his child. In New York City, beautiful stay-at-home mom Vanessa is obsessively searching the Internet for news of an old flame. And in San Francisco, Dani, the aspiring writer who can't seem to put down a book--or a cocktail--long enough to open her laptop, has just been fired...again.

In an effort to regroup, Kate, Vanessa, and Dani retreat to the New Jersey beach town where they once spent their summers. Emboldened by the seductive cadences of the shore, the women being to realize how much their lives, and friendships, have been shaped by the choices they made one fateful night on the beach eight years earlier--and the secrets that only now threaten to surface.

All the Summer Girls is  a pretty quick read just in time for summer.  At it's heart, it's about 3 women who each hold a secret about the summer Kate's brother, Colin, died.  Those events 8 years earlier have shaped their lives.  They all believe that their secret contributed to his death in some way.

For me, the book was overall OK.  Out of the three characters, the only one I really felt badly for was Kate.  Her life is so ordered that she leaves now room for fun or spontaneity.  Being dumped and finding out she was pregnant all on the same day probably was the best thing that could ever happen to her. It spun her life out of control and forced her to face her past and the guilt she had been feeling all of these years.

I didn't like Vanessa very much.  Yes, her husband kissed another woman, but did that give her the right to seek out her ex-boyfriend?  That makes her just as bad in my eyes. I also thought she was whiny.  She is a stay at home mom with a beautiful daughter, a great place to live and money to do what she wants, yet she isn't happy.  Stop complaining and do something about it.  What does she have to be unhappy about? I had no sympathy for her.

And lastly, Dani.  She is clearly an addict and has been for years.  She keeps making excuses for her behavior.   She plays the victim and keeps blaming her circumstances in life on the night Colin died.  I wanted to scream at her to get over it. She is 29 years old and it's time to be a grown up and own up to her behavior. The only way I saw her making it was rehab and some serious counseling.

To be honest, I didn't really think that any of their secrets about that night was all that big. Certainly, not enough to ruin their lives or friendships. Colin was a drug addict and was clearly headed toward a path of destruction. Not one of their decisions, however poor, would have changed this. At the end of the book, I thought that Kate was the only one I thought had changed the most.  Her future looked bright and I knew she would be OK not matter what happened.  I didn't get that sense with either Vanessa or Dani.

Kari& Autumn: What inspired you to become a writer?

Christine:  I think I was born a writer. I wrote my first short story when I was about 8 -- it involved Cabbage Patch Dolls going to Mars. I've always like to write, and it has always been about strange or unusual events (science fiction or fantasy).

I got "serious" about writing in 2003, when I attended a by-audition boot camp with Orson Scott Card. Before that, becoming an author was a dream. After that, it became a goal.

I love writing about characters more than anything else. Give me a person with a problem and I'll give you a wonderful story of overcoming adversity.

Kari& Autumn: Where do you come up with the ideas for your books?

Christine: Ahhh, ideas! I'm currently working on my first nonfiction book, which will be called Bringing New Worlds to Life. (A world building guide for science fiction and fantasy writers.) In it, I discuss ideas in depth and the fact that ideas are quite literally everywhere. You get them people watching or in the news or reading books or playing with your kids or walking around the neighborhood or...or... Everywhere! I believe ideas are cheap. The hard part is weaving those ideas into a compelling story. That part takes time, dedication, and practice.

Kari& Autumn: What exciting projects are waiting in the wings?

Christine: The Cassie Scot series is complete, and each book will be coming out with mere months in between. Secrets and Lies, book 2, is expected to come out this fall.  We're just waiting on cover art. Mind Games, book 3, is with an editor even as we speak.

There will also be two spin-off sequels to the Cassie Scot series involving minor characters that got too big for me and took on lives of their own. One of those stories is drafted, the other one is still in notes and in my head.

In addition, I'm working on a completely new book -- new characters, new world, new magic -- involving a world of dreams.

Kari& Autumn: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

Christine:  Mackayla Lane from Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. I like her because she represents to me the epitome of character growth and change over the course of a series.

Kari& Autumn: Just for fun, if you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

Christine: A bird so I could fly. (And if I ever finish that dreamworld book I mentioned you will now know why my main character often dreams herself into the form of a bird. :) )

Thanks for having me!

Blog Tour: Shore Leave by Anastasia McKellan

Author: Anastasia McKellan
Publisher: Chances Press
Date of publication: March 2013

Eighteen months ago, Navy pilot Greg Marsters was banished from Wyndham Shores, Massachusetts after his marriage fell apart. Now he’s returned to spend his shore leave restoring antique schooners for his old mentor so that he can buy a boat of his own. After making the biggest mistake of his life, Greg has vowed to steer clear of romantic entanglements, but he soon finds himself drawn to an old friend from high school.

Melanie Grantham is the only person in town interested in hearing Greg’s side of the story, and despite his promise to sail away alone the first second he can, Greg takes her up on her offer for the sexual healing they’re both in desperate need of. Their hot nights throw him for a loop, and the sex is out of this world. But Greg can’t forgive himself for the mistakes of his past. Will he leave Melanie behind again before he realizes he’s been given another chance for true love?

Shore Leave is a quick story about Greg and Melanie.  Greg is a Navy pilot who returns home on leave to make some extra money on t
he side.  The catch is that everyone in the town seems to hate him because he cheated on his wife with his sister-in-law.  Melanie has always liked Greg and decides to give him the benefit of the doubt.  The attraction is intense and pretty hot.

I enjoyed the story, for the msot part.  Despite his infidelty (which I despise), I liked Greg.  I thought he did a good job of beating himself up for what he did.  I also felt he was genuinely sorry and knew it was one mistake he would never make again.  What annoyed me was that no one seemed mad with the sister-in-law.  Wasn't she just as guilty?  I was happy to see Melanie help Greg work through his self-pity and start to forgive himself.  My problem was that I didn't really buy the HEA.  I thought it was too fast.  These two needed more time together in order to make a big commitment.

Want to win a copy?  Check out the author's giveaway and fill out the rafflecopter after the ecting exceprt!

Excerpt:

Melanie leaned toward him. Greg moved closer but hesitated, as if unsure whether he should bring his mouth to hers. She pressed her lips to his, testing him out, seeing if he’d respond. He did. They kissed, their mouths melding into one another. She parted her lips and felt his mouth open against hers in response. Then he sank his tongue into her mouth and shifted closer to her.

He deepened the kiss further. She felt a twinge between her thighs and moaned softly in her throat when his tongue rubbed against hers. Then he pulled away.

“Mel, what’s going on here?” he asked.

“Kissing. Do you like it?”

He looked at her. “Yeah. I like it a lot.”

“Me, too. No one would guess you’re out of practice.”

He laughed quietly.

She grew serious, her smile fading. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to kiss you.”

“And now—”

“You’ve exceeded my expectations.”

He smiled. “Is that right?”

She nodded. Melanie leaned in and kissed him some more, and Greg placed one hand on her hip and explored the curve of her. His other hand went to her breast, touching her lightly through her T-shirt.
She slid her lips over his throat, exploring the rough texture where the stubble was beginning to come in. Even after their long day he smelled like aftershave. It mixed with his unique masculine scent and she couldn’t get enough. She licked the five-o’clock shadow on his neck and explored the texture of the softer skin below. She ran her hand down his chest, feeling the hard muscles draw in beneath her hands.

Then she placed her hand over the bulge in his crotch, rubbing lightly while they kissed. She felt him harden through his jeans.
Greg touched her hand. “What’s happening here, Mel?”

She licked her lips, her breath coming fast, her heart pounding. “I want you. But you’re not feeling it.”

“I’m feeling it, but I haven’t even taken you out on a real date.”

“I’d like you to take me out,” she said.

“Tomorrow night. Eight o’clock.”

“Yes.”

“Mel, whether we go out or not, I can’t give you what you need,” Greg said. “A meaningful relationship is the last thing I’m after right now.”

“Who said anything about a meaningful relationship?”

“What are you saying?” Greg asked.

“I’m saying we could have this for now. If you’ll let me.”

“I’ve got nothing to give you.”

“I have nothing to give you, either.” She kissed him again. “Take off your shirt,” she murmured in his ear.

He did. She slowly kissed her way down his bare chest, then his stomach, as she went. Then she slid to her knees on the carpet and reached for the zipper of his jeans.

Review: Nantucket Nights by Elin Hilderbrand

by:  Elin Hilderbrand
published by: St. Martin's Paperbacks
publish date:  July 1, 2003

For 20 years, Kayla, Antoinette, and Val have performed their own special summer ritual. Once a year, the old friends put aside their daily, separate lives to drink champagne, swap stories, and swim naked under the Nantucket stars. This time though, one of them swims out from the shore and doesn't return. After the surviving friends emerge from their grief, they realize that the repercussions of their loss go far beyond their little circle, and they begin to uncover layers of secrets, and their connections to each other, that were never revealed on the beach. What has made their friendship strong now has the power to destroy their marriages, families-and even themselves.

Nantucket Nights is told from Kayla's viewpoint.  She is a middle-aged mother of four kids married to a prominent Nantucket contractor.  She spends her days counting calories and worrying about her husband's fidelity.  But the facade of her world comes crashing down around her the night Antoinette disappears in the Atlantic Ocean.

Once again Elin Hilderbrand created a story of Nantucket that utterly captivated me.   Because of her books, I so want to go there.  Or find my own island.  I found that when the story went off island, it lost some of its magic.

I found that this book really probed some of the interesting aspects of the friendships between women.   Those friendships can be complex and not always reciprocal.  The way they change and mellow over time is evident in this book.

Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite writers.  I always highly recommend her books.  They're great summer reads.

Guest Post: Val Stasik, author of Incidental Daughter

Today, we welcome author Val Stasik who is promoting her book debut novel, Incidental Daughter.  She joins us with a post about writing as a business.

Publisher:Armery & Hallquist Publishing
Date of publication: January 2013

When successful publisher Liz Michaels’ marriage to blue blood, Addison Tiffin Payne, fails after the loss of their baby and his growing alcoholism, she pours all her creative energy and passion into her work and finds comfort in her friendship with the co-owners of her company as well as the appearances of the spirits of her Polish mother and grandmother, who never speak except in dreams she cannot remember. Only her feelings from those dreams linger.

When Liz’s ex-husband plans to stage her suicide by pushing her off the balcony of her high-rise home in order to collect on a life insurance policy, he topples to his death instead. When the police arrive, Liz, the potential victim, becomes the prime murder suspect.

Writing Is Now a Business

It’s no news to us writers that every piece of writing needs some kind of plan no matter how minimal. However, we are fast learning that writing isn’t our only task in getting our work to our readers. Regardless of whether or not we are traditionally published or self-published, we find ourselves charged with more of the work of promoting our books. And we find that going the traditional route doesn’t provide the advertising help that once was common. So, all writers need to think seriously of their writing career as a multifaceted business requiring sound planning. Freelance writers have been doing this from the get go. It’s never too early to plan, even if you haven’t finished your writing, let alone even started it.

Your writing is your product. As such, it must be of the best quality you can produce. Aside from your innate talent and self editing, that quality involves getting good critiques from fellow writers—perhaps in a writing group; having a variety of test readers give you their reactions; hiring a good content editor and a good copy editor; and enlisting the services of a successful book designer. Appearances do count. I keep reading in many different sources that poor editing and cover design turn off readers—and we do want those readers to read our next book, so invest in superior editing and book design.

Whether you are in the early stages of your writing or have a completed, vetted manuscript, develop a business plan. A business plan consists of a realistic timeline from production to sale, source of financing, projected expenses, and projected income based on research. People starting businesses create business plans to obtain financing for their ventures. (However, as far as I know, banks aren’t making loans to finance writers' book publishing ventures.) It’s important to consider if the amount of money you are willing to invest will be covered by the return on book sales. This consideration may determine if you publish traditionally, self-publish, and/or epublish.

You can find examples of business plans on the Internet, at the library, and from the Chamber of Commerce or other community organizations that help people start their own businesses. The expenses of creating your final manuscript will be part of this business plan. It’s important to have a business plan so that you don’t find yourself without funds at a critical point in getting your writing out to the public. Many a phenomenal read has languished for lack of marketing funds.

A marketing plan is a necessary adjunct to your business plan. There is really quite a lot of information on marketing your writing—Penny C. About the Author:

Val Stasik shares a home in eternally sunny Santa Fe, NM, with her aging mixed terrier, Sugar, who allows her to sleep in his queen-size bed as well as sharpen her culinary skills for his benefit. Stasik spent many years as a writing teacher, helping other writers find their voice and tell their stories, and is a consultant for the Northern Virginia Writing Project. INCIDENTAL DAUGHTER is Stasik’s debut novel.

Stasik studied drama and English at the University of Pittsburgh and then transferred to the University of Maryland, College Park, graduating with high honors and a B.S. in Secondary Education, Communication. The year she attended graduate school was filled with student protests, bomb threats, and military helicopters.

Stasik became an editorial assistant for THE PHARMACOLOGIST in Bethesda. She then moved to Harpers Ferry where she taught for five years and participated in the Old Opera House Theatre onstage and behind the scenes.

In Harrisburg, PA, she became a groom and mutuels clerk at Penn National Race Track and, later, a commercial lines underwriter for Pennsylvania National Mutual Casualty Insurance Company. Right before her son was born, Three Mile Island happened. So far, neither glows in the dark.

In Virginia, Stasik enjoyed the enriching experience of teaching writing and literature in the Loudoun County Public School system, instructed other teachers in assessing student writings, and helped develop various English curricula. She also participated in the Fauquier Community Theatre on and off stage. From 2002-2004, she developed a part-time hypnosis practice. She then retired to Santa Fe where she has been writing—a few film scripts that have been produced (Café Destiny, on the Web,  Spring 2013, www.cafe-destiny.com) and a couple of award-winning play scripts.

Stasik is currently a member of the New Mexico Book Association, the New Mexico Book Co-Op; Southwest Writers; the Independent Book Publishers Association; the Small Publishers’ Association of North America; the Small Publishers, Artists, and Writers Network; and Pennwriters.
