After a night of debauchery, Lord Barclay wakes up to find a woman in his bed. That's not unusual, but this one is fully clothed. When she tells him they are married, he is instantly cold sober and looking for a way out.
Miss Sarah Vincent, an orphan raised in an American convent, didn’t ask for this marriage. She’ll be damned if it’s in name only. But seducing a man? How ever will she do that?! Good thing her friend lent her a copy of The Kama Sutra….
Brice starts to wonder what has come over his young wife. She’s suddenly taking charge of him, and their house, and no longer the timid woman he assumed her to be.
Despite his aversion to this marriage he’s starting to want his wife…in every way possible.

 My thoughts:

A Rake's Rebellion is the third stand alone in "Rakes Trilogy.  I thought this worked fairly well as a stand alone book.  For the most part, I liked the book.  I really loved the way Sarah came out of her shell and became a beautiful confident woman.  That was a pleasure to see.  I also liked Brice and his transformation from Rake to husband.   I also loved the friendship that developed between Sarah and Caroline.

What I didn't love was the romance.  There was just no heat between the couple  I thought the Kama Sutra that is given to Sarah would play more of a role in her seducing her reluctant husband. But, she never did.  They don't even get intimate until 80% of the way into the book.  It was just too slow of a romance for me.  I would have liked more of them together.  Despite the tepid romance, it is an enjoyable story overall because the characters were interesting.  Give it a shot.

A Rake Trilogy Novel

CHAPTER ONE

Lord Barclay—Brice to his friends—groaned and pulled the pillow over his head to alleviate the bright light from the window of his guest room in Brighton Pavilion. Some damn fool had opened the curtains. He didn’t need rays of sunshine piercing his already hammering head. What kind of rot-gut whiskey had the prince-regent been passing off at last night’s ball?
Brice stirred, squeezing his eyes shut when his pillow slipped off his face, and gingerly moved his legs and feet, which seemed heavy as lead. He slowly stretched his arms, flexing his fingers to make sure everything was intact, and he felt something soft. Soft and feminine. Umm. At least last night hadn’t been a complete loss if he had a woman in his bed. He smiled as he rolled over. He just wished he could remember…
“I would rather you not touch me, your lordship.”
Not touch her? Hell. What have I done? Brice forced his eyes open, squinting against the offending sunlight streaming in, then quickly closed them again. His mind was obviously still in hazy oblivion. How foxed had he gotten last night?
Sarah Vincent, the poor American cousin of the Earl of Lockwood, was sitting on his bed. Of all the women his alcohol-infused brain could have conjured, why did it have to pick someone who’d been raised in a convent, prim and proper, and even dressed the part?
Brice opened one eye halfway. She was still there, propped against his headboard, fully clothed in the drab brown dress, with its high collar and long sleeves, that she’d worn last night. A faint scent of lavender lingered in the air, but he could not detect the musky scent of lovemaking. Hopefully, his memory was not that far gone.
“Why are you in my bed, Miss Vincent?”
A blush stole over her cheeks and she lowered her gaze. “We were married last night.”
All remnants of a hangover left him faster than being doused with a bucket of ice water. He bolted upright in bed, then realized he was totally naked and grabbed the sheet. It seemed fitting given that she was clothed from neck to toe. He glanced at her feet. She hadn’t even taken her shoes off.
“Married?”

Sarah cast a quick glance his way, her blush increasing as the sheet slipped down Brice’s hips. She quickly looked away and nodded.

Review: All Fired Up by Lori Foster

Author: Lori Foster
Publisher; Harlequin
Publication Date: November 19, 2019

He’s tantalizing trouble she can’t resist…

Charlotte Parrish has always wanted a certain kind of man: someone responsible, settled, boring. Bad boys need not apply. But when her car leaves her stranded and a mysterious stranger with brooding eyes and a protective streak comes to her rescue, she can’t deny how drawn she is to him. In town searching for family he’s never met, Mitch is everything she never thought she wanted—and suddenly everything she craves.

Finding his half brothers after all these years is more than Mitch Crews has allowed himself to wish for. Finding love never even crossed his mind…until he meets Charlotte. She’s sweet, warmhearted, sexier than she knows—and too damn good for an ex-con like him. But when his past comes back to haunt him, putting Charlotte—and the family he’s come to care for—in danger, Mitch isn’t playing by the rules. He’s already surrendered his heart, but now he’ll risk his life.

All Fired Up is the third book in the Road to Love series.  Finally, we get Charlotte's story and her match is perfect for her.  For both Mitch and Charlotte, it is an instant attraction.  However be prepared for a smoldering slow burn romance.  The best part about their romance was the honesty that the two of them had between each other.  I liked that it was important to Mitch to lay it all out before they took the next step.

More than the romance, though, I just loved the family dynamic of the brothers and how they accepted Mitch from their first meeting.  Getting a peek into Mitch's perspective as he slowly learns to embrace his new family and begin to trust that he had people he could count on was a pleasure.  The entire story-line was heart warming and made me smile.  I highly recommend this series!

Princes have pomp and glory—not murdered secretaries and crushes on commoners
Nothing gets London's high society's tongues wagging like a good scandal. And when the personal secretary of the visiting Prince Sebastian of Alucia is found murdered, it's all anyone can talk about, including Eliza Tricklebank. Her unapologetic gossip gazette has benefitted from an anonymous tip about the crime, prompting Sebastian to take an interest in playing detective—and an even greater one in Eliza.
With a trade deal on the line and mounting pressure to secure a noble bride, there's nothing more salacious than a prince dallying with a commoner. Sebastian finds Eliza's contrary manner as frustrating as it is seductive, but they'll have to work together if they're going to catch the culprit. And when things heat up behind closed doors, it's the prince who'll have to decide what comes first—his country or his heart.
The Princess Plan is the first in a new Royal Wedding series.  In this first book, Eliza is runs a gossip paper with her sister.  When she publishes an anonymous tip about the Prince of Alucia's friend's murder, she never dreamt it would bring the Prince to her doorstep.  I thought this was a sweet and fun historical romance.  I will admit to not really liking Sebastian in the beginning.  But he quickly grew on me.  I loved Eliza and Sebastian's friendship.   That was really refreshing. I also LOVED what he did for her in the end.  What a great way to wrap up their love story.   The other characters rounded out the story nicely and added some comic relief.  I am looking forward to reading the next book!

Today we have the blog tour for GIFTED by Ainsley St. Claire! Check out this new holiday romantic suspense and grab your copy today!

Title: Gifted

Author: Ainsley St. Claire

Genre: Holiday Romantic Suspense

About Gifted:

How do things fall apart so easily?   Kate: As a former teacher, my mission is to keep the disadvantaged youth of our city engaged with school. My non-profit has been wildly successful with the kids, but now I'm forty mentors short for the Christmas season. It didn't look like we would be able to find enough help, until Jim Adelson got involved. He may have solved my mentor problem, but he's created another: I can't concentrate with this panty melting God around.   Jim: The community has been good to me. I'd built my successful security business with hard work and determination, and when I got approached to help Kate Monroe's non-profit, it seemed a fitting way to give back. I'd offer to spend time with some kids, but it’s Kate that I find myself wanting to spend time with. With beauty obvious to everyone, and a compassionate heart she wears on her sleeve, she has me reevaluating my priorities.   When the children's Christmas gifts go missing, Jim and Kate are forced together in the hunt. Can true love fight through the drama to find a happy ending?   Gifted is the first book in the holiday series Clear Security Holidays. This is a standalone holiday romance suspense novel, but characters from the Venture Capital series and from Tech Billionaires can be known to make appearances.

My thoughts:

Gifted is the first book in a new series involving Clear Security.  I got the impression that this is a spin-off series since several characters were mentioned that seem to have already had their stories.  Despite that, this worked well as a stand alone.    This is Kate and Jim's story.  For the most part, I thought it was cute.  I did like them together, although I thought the declaration of love came a bit too fast given the time frame of the story.  There is a little mystery that rounded out the story nicely.  This is the first book I have read by this author.  I look forward to trying her again.

Review of Ghost by DJ Bryce:

Ghost is one of the novellas included in the Dark Moon Falls boxed set.  I had no trouble reading it as a stand alone.  It's a littl insta love, but that only goes along with the lore that there is one true mate for a shifter.  When they find "the one" all bets are off.  I thought Ghost and MacKenzie were good together.  However, I loved Ghost and Kellan's relationship a bit more.  I do recommend giving this one a shot.  I'm intrigued enough to try out some of the other stories in the set.

Review: Layover by David Bell

Author: David Bell
Publisher: Berkley Books
Publication Date: July 2019

Joshua Fields takes the same flights every week for work. His life is a series of departures and arrivals, hotels and airports. During yet another layover, Joshua meets Morgan, a beautiful stranger with whom he feels an immediate connection. When it's time for their flights, Morgan gets up to leave, leans over and passionately kisses Joshua, lamenting that they'll never see each other again.

As Morgan slips away, Joshua is left feeling confused by what just happened between them. That's when he looks up and is shocked to see Morgan's face flashing on a nearby TV screen. He's even more shocked when he learns the reason why--Morgan is a missing person.

What follows is a whirlwind, fast-paced journey filled with lies, deceit, and secrets to discover the truth about why Morgan is on the run. But when he finally thinks every mystery is solved, another rears its head, and Joshua's worst enemy may be his own assumptions about those around him...

Layover features Joshua who is bored with is life and job.  He is in a dead end relationship and works for his father in a job he hates. He meets  Morgan in the terminal during a long layover and is so intrigued that he decides to throw caution to the wind and follow her.  It turns out Joshua isn't great at picking his spontaneous moments.

I really wanted to love this book, but sadly I found it mediocre at best.  My main issue with the story was the main character.  He isn't too bright.  I mean I understand that sometimes you have to take a chance on something.  However, when he figures out what is going on with Morgan, he really should have walked away.  Why would you risk your future for someone you don't even know?  He just kept making dumb choices.  I did like the police detective, but her character wasn't enough to save the book.  The ending was predictable and disappointing.  I found nothing thrilling about this book.  I wouldn't really recommend it.

Review: The Brink by James S. Murray & Darren Wearmouth

Authors: James S. Murray & Darren Wearmouth
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Publication Date: June 2019

The sequel to the international bestseller (including #1 Sunday Times bestseller) Awakened, by one of the stars of TruTV’s Impractical Jokers and a bestselling science fiction author.

Former NYC Mayor Tom Cafferty has been haunted by the horror of a single day. The opening of the brand new Z-train subway line beneath the Hudson River—the supposed shining moment of his tenure. But the ribbon-cutting ceremony turned deadly when the train carrying Cafferty’s wife and other citizens was attacked by a horde of hyper intelligent, bloodthirsty creatures previously unknown to humanity.

Everything changed for Cafferty, ex-NYPD officer Sarah Bowcut, and tech-expert Diego Munoz that day. They had uncovered the deadly truth: the attack was no accident.

And now the creatures that wreaked havoc underneath New York have spread worldwide, and with a massive cover-up—and a secret organization holding nations hostage with the knowledge of how to kill them—Cafferty’s team must fight against impossible odds to save the entire planet from an apocalyptic scale disaster.

I was really looking forward to reading The Brink, which is the sequel to The Awakened (my review). The Awakened was a pleasant surprise for me, So I had high hopes for this sequel.  The story picks up a few months (I think) after the events of the first book.

Sadly, this was kind of a disappointment.  One of the things that I loved about the first book was the suspense and creepiness.  That was really lacking in this book.  It felt more like a spy or secret government espionage story instead of horror.  In fact, I was kind of bored.  The villain in the book was over the top comically evil.  Think Dr. Evil on steroids.  The one thing I did appreciate was the background of the creatures and how they were first discovered.  However, it wasn't enough to save the story for me. I'm not sure if there will be a third book. If there is, I may give it a try.

Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt of Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock

Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock

One father was murdered, and another convicted of his death. All because their children fell in love.

Nate Beckett has spent his life fighting wildfires instead of the lies and rumors that drove him from his Colorado home town. His mother begs him to come to Carlisle now that his father has been released from prison, but it isn’t until he’s sidelined by an injury that he’s forced to return and face his past. But that means facing Brenna too.

Fourteen years ago, Nate was in love with the preacher's daughter. When Pastor Strickland discovered Brenna had defied him to sneak out with Nate, the fight between Strickland and Nate's drunken dad was loud—and very public. Strickland was found murdered later that night, and everyone accused Roy Beckett. When the church burned down, people assumed it was Nate getting even for his father’s conviction. He let the rumors fly and left Carlisle without looking back.

Now, Brenna is stunned to learn that the man convicted of murdering her father has been pardoned. The events of that night set her life on a bad course, and she’s dealing with a brutal custody battle with her ex and his new wife where he’s using lies and his family’s money to sway the judge. She’s barely hanging on, and she’s turned to alcohol to cope. Shame and fear consume her.

As they deal with the present—including new information about that fateful night and a wildfire that’s threatening their town—their past keeps igniting. Nate is the steady force Brenna has so desperately needed. But she’ll have to learn to trust him again first.

My thoughts:

Smoke Screen is a very quick Christian contemporary.  It involves Brenna, a single mother struggling with a court battle to keep custody of her children.  It also involves Nate, whose father is out of prison having served time for killing Brenna's father.  I ended up enjoying the romance.  Brenna and Nate's past history really added to their relationship.  It was definitely not a light read as it deals with struggles of faith in God, family and friends.  It also deals with the struggles of alcohol abuse.  So...definite trigger warnings.  I was really rooting for Brenna.  I thought her struggle with drinking came across as realistic.  The story also sends a good message about the crisis of faith and what you can do to let go.  There is a little bit of a mystery because Roy (Nate's dad) swears he is innocent.  I liked how that story line was wrapped up nicely.     I do recommend trying this one out.

Read an excerpt:

I woke up in a blinding bright room, my clothes off and something clamped to my face. I tried to reach it, but I couldn’t bend my right arm, and my hand stung. An IV was taped to my other hand, but I moved carefully and touched the thing over my face.
An oxygen mask. I tried to sit up. “What happened?”
T-bird came to my bedside, a sheen of smoky sweat still soiling his face. “Nate, lie back, man.”
“The fire,” I said. “Need to get back. My men.”
“They’re still there. Making progress. But you’re not going anywhere near a fire for a month or so.”
I took the mask off and coughed a little, but managed to catch my breath. “A month?”
“Yep. Second degree burns on 20 percent of your body. Some of the burns are deep.”
It came back to me, the event that had gotten me here.
“The family. Were they injured?”
“Not a scratch or burn. Turns out it was a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He says you’re a hero.”
“You know I had no choice. They were in the path—”
“Take the praise where you can get it, man. We don’t get that much.”
I looked at my right side. My right arm was bandaged, and so was my side and down my right leg to the point where my boots had stopped the flames. Second degree wasn’t so bad, I told myself. Third degree would have been brutal. I’d be able to leave the hospital soon. I’d heal.
“I won’t need a month,” I said.
“Yes, you will. They can’t let you go back. Doctor’s orders. You’re grounded until he releases you.”
I managed to sit up, but it was a bad idea. The burns pulling on my skin reminded me why I shouldn’t. “I can’t be grounded during fire season. Are you crazy? I need to be there. You don’t have enough men as it is.”
“Sorry, Nate. It is what it is. Why don’t you go home to Carlisle for a while? Take it easy.”
Go home? Pop had just been pardoned, and he and my mom were trying to navigate the reunion. Though she would love to have me home, I didn’t know if I was up to it. My father could be challenging, and fourteen years of prison hadn’t done him any favors.
