Throwback Thursday: Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris

Author: Charlaine Harris
First published in 2005 by Berkeley

Harper Connelly has what you might call a strange job: she finds dead people. She can sense the final location of a person who's passed, and share their very last moment. The way Harper sees it, she's providing a service to the dead while bringing some closure to the living - but she's used to most people treating her like a blood-sucking leech. Traveling with her step-brother Tolliver as manager and sometime-bodyguard, she's become an expert at getting in, getting paid, and getting out fast. Because for the living it's always urgent - even if the dead can wait forever.

For some reason, I never tried this series before.  Honestly, I gave up in the Sookie Stackhoue series after book #2 so I was a bit wary about trying this one out.  Grave Sight is the first in the Harper Connelly series.  Harper was struck by lightening when she was a little girl.  She was left with the ability to find the dead.  Now as an adult, she travels the country with her step-brother finding dead bodies for a fee.

This first book sets up the scene for the reader.  We get to know Harper and Toliver and how they ended up doing this for a living.  We also get to know a lot about their childhoods. I thought this was a pretty unique take on psychic ability.  Harper can find dead bodies and can see how they died, but she can't see who did it if it was murder. I found the mystery to be fairly engaging, but a little convoluted and long.  It probably could have been shorted a little bit.

If you haven't picked up this series yet, I do recommend giving this one a try.  I'll be looking for the next book, Grave Surprise.

Blog Tour: In the Blue Hour by Elizabeth Hall

Author: Elizabeth Hall
Publisher: Lake Union Publishing
Date of publication: November 1, 2016

Elise Brooks dreams of a car accident on an icy road. Weeks later, her beloved husband, Michael, is killed in just such a crash. Now, overcome with grief and uncertainty, Elise believes his spirit may be following her in the form of a raven, trying to tell her something from beyond the grave.
Desperate to understand the signs, Elise embraces both the Native American wisdom she grew up with and the world of psychics and seers. So when a tarot-card reader suggests she take a journey to the mysterious address found in Michael’s old jacket, she embarks on a cross-country trek to follow the clues.

Accompanied by Tom Dugan, an engineer and scientist who does not believe in psychics, mediums, or the hoodoo “conjure woman” they encounter on the road, Elise navigates the rituals and omens of the spirit world in an attempt to unravel the mystery of her husband’s message.

In the Blue Hour was an interesting book and different from what I have read lately.  I wouldn't really classify it as a ghost story.  It's more of a mystical journey for widow trying to find her own way out of her grief.  Elise lost her husband in a car accident 7months before.  She beings to sense someone around her and wonders if he is trying to tell her something.  She meets Celestina, a trot card reader, who tells her a man with dark eyes will help her and take her on a journey.  Tom Dugan is running from his past and agrees to help Elise.

I won't talk too much about plot because it would ruin the ending for you.  Instead, I'll talk about the book as a whole.  For the most part, I liked the story.  I empathized with Elsie and was eager to follow her on her journey.  Her story was interesting commentary on how we can let someone else take over our life until we lose who we really once were.  I was hoping she would end up finding herself again after living in Michael's shadow for so long without realizing she had.  The part that stood out for me was when she walked into her house at one point and realized there really wasn't anyting in there that she picked out herself.  What a sad realization to make.  I also liked Tom. Being a science oriented person myself, I found myself nodding at his logical explanations for the things that happened to Elsie as well as to him.

Having said all that, I did find the pacing a bit slow and I did skim in a few places that were very bogged down in narration.  There were a few changes in points of view that kind of threw me off because I was so immersed in Elsie's story that I wasn't expecting it so late into the book. I also thought the ending was a bit abrupt and would have liked more of an "after".   Still, I do recommend giving this one a try.  It was a quick and pleasant read.

Sinful, addicting, and unapologetically alpha, these men are every woman’s erotic daydream ... And your ultimate dirty fantasy. Find on  Goodreads

Dirty Sexy Cuffed ended in a huge surprise. As in, my jaw hit the floor. I was eager to get my hands on Dirty Sexy Sinner to find out how it was all going to play out.  This is Jackson and Tara's story.
I loved the two of them together.  Loved how they interacted.  They seemed to be from two different worlds, but when you got to the center of both of them, they had so much more in common. My heart really felt for Tara over the guilt she felt about the death of her ex boyfriend.  It was just gut-wrenching.

If you haven't read the previous three, this might be a spoiler. But don't get me wrong, it can be read as a stand alone! Jackson is Clay's twin brother who was sold by their mother for drugs.  He had a nice home growing up, but never really had love and approval from either of his adopted parents.  He worked hard for everything he had.  Watching the brothers get to know him and open their hearts to him was touching.

I loved the ending and the epilogue.  I will miss these couples.  I have really enjoyed their journeys as they found love and family.  I highly recommend the Dirty Sexy series to readers who love alphas males and sigh worthy HEAs.

Blog Tour: Love Literary Style by Karin Gillespie

Author:Karin Gillespie
Publisher: Henery press
Date of publication: November 2016

They say opposites attract, and what could be more opposite than a stuffy literary writer falling in love with a self-published romance writer?

Meet novelist Aaron Mite. He lives in a flea-infested rented alcove, and his girlfriend Emma, a combative bookstore owner, has just dumped him. He meets Laurie Lee at a writers’ colony and mistakenly believes her to be a renowned writer of important fiction. When he discovers she’s a self-published romance author, he’s already fallen in love with her.

Aaron thinks genre fiction is an affront to the fiction-writing craft. He likes to quotes the essayist, Arthur Krystal who claims literary fiction “melts the frozen sea inside of us.” Ironically Aaron doesn’t seem to realize that, despite his lofty literary aspirations, he’s emotionally frozen, due, in part, to a childhood tragedy. The vivacious Laurie, lover of flamingo-patterned attire and all things hot pink, is the one person who might be capable of melting him.

Their relationship is initially made in literary heaven but when Aaron loses his contract with a prestigious press, and Laurie’s novel is optioned by a major film studio, the differences in their literary sensibilities and temperaments drive them apart.

In a clumsy attempt to win Laurie back, Aaron employs the tropes of romance novels. Too late. She’s already taken up with Ross, a prolific author of Nicholas Sparks-like love stories. Initially Laurie is more comfortable with the slick and superficial Ross, but circumstances force her to go deeper with her writing and confront a painful past. Maybe Aaron and Laurie have more in common than they imagined.

In the tradition of the Rosie Project, Love Literary Style is a sparkling romantic comedy which pokes fun at the divide between so-called low and high brow fiction.

Love Literary Style is story about opposites attracting and finding their happily ever afters.  Laurei and Aaron are as opposite as they come.  I really wanted to love this story.  It's about my one of my favorite subjects, the literary world.  I know I am probably going to be in the minority when I say unfortunately, I didn't love it. I did find the insights and commentary about the publishing world to be spot on and amusing.  That is the one thing I did enjoy about the book and that raised my rating a little.

But, I had a hard time liking either Laurie or Aaron.  I felt like they were too extreme.  Laurie came across as too much of an airhead.  She wants to be a writer, but the only "Rom-Coms" I ever hear her mention are movies.  She doesn't know who Toni Morrison is and has never heard the idiom, "The elephant in the room". Later, instead of taking constructive criticism on her book, she breaks up with Aaron.  Those are just a few.   I just found that a litle too far fetched. Aaron did have some redeeming qualitites.  For instance, rescuing his puppy Dusty off the street. But, he was kind of dull. Are there people that clueless to social media still out there?  He is in his late 20s but comes across as a 60 year old man. I just couldn't really see either of them together for a lasting relationship.

I'll just have to chalk this romance up as not for me.   Check out what others on the tour had to say in the links below.

The Amateurs by Sara Shephard

Author: Sara Shephard
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Date of publication: November 2016

Five years ago, high school senior Helena Kelly disappeared from her backyard in Dexby, Connecticut, never to be heard from again. Her family was left without any answers—without any idea who killed Helena, or why.

So when eighteen-year-old Seneca Frazier sees a desperate post on the Case Not Closed message board, she knows it’s time to change that. Helena’s high-profile disappearance is the one that originally got Seneca addicted to true crime. It’s the reason she’s a member of the site in the first place.

Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, she agrees to spend spring break in Connecticut working on the case with Maddy Wright, her best friend from Case Not Closed. However, the moment she steps off the train, things start to go wrong. Maddy’s nothing like she expected, and Helena’s sister, Aerin, doesn’t seem to want any help after all. Plus, Seneca has a secret of her own, one that could derail the investigation if she’s not careful.

Alongside Brett, another super-user from the site, they slowly begin to unravel the secrets Helena kept in the weeks before her disappearance. But the killer is watching…and determined to make sure the case stays cold.

The Amateurs is a new series about a group of college/high school age kids who get together to try to solve the murder of Aerin's sister, Helena.  All of them have something invested in it, or so it seems.  As they get further along, someone keeps trying to get them to stop.

For me, this ended up being just OK.  I was hoping it would be like The Perfectionists series.  But this one kind of fell flat. The mystery was interesting enough to keep me reading.  But it was the characters  that I didn't really care for. None of them were particularly likable.  Many times, I found myself rolling my eyes at their over reactions to things.  It could also be the mulitple points of view that I didn't care for.  I think I would have liked it more if it has been through just Seneca and Maddy's eyes. Of course this one ended with a big cliff hanger.  I'll probably read the next one just to see how it all works out.

Joint Review: Surrender, New York by Caleb Carr

Author: Caleb Carr
Publisher: Random House
Date of publication: August 2016

In the small town of Surrender in upstate New York, Trajan Jones, a psychological profiler, and Dr. Michael Li, a trace evidence expert, teach online courses in profiling and forensic science from Jones’s family farm. Once famed advisors to the New York City Police Department, Trajan and Li now work in exile, having made enemies of those in power. Protected only by farmhands and Jones’s unusual pet cheetah, the outcast pair is unexpectedly called in to consult on a disturbing case.

In rural Burgoyne County, a pattern of strange deaths has emerged: adolescent boys and girls are found murdered in gruesome fashion. Senior law enforcement officials are quick to blame a serial killer, yet their efforts to apprehend this criminal are peculiarly ineffective.

Jones and Li soon discover that the victims are all “throwaway children,” a new state classification of young people who are neither orphans, runaways, nor homeless, but who are abandoned by their families and left to fend for themselves. Two of these throwaways, Lucas Kurtz and his older sister, cross paths with Jones and Li, offering information that could blow the case wide open.

Autumn and I were eagerly waiting the release of this book. Both of us are fans of The Alienist and Angel of Darkness. I even liked Killing Time!  Unfortunately, Autumn was much more patient than I was.  This book was dreadful.  I DNF'd at about 30%.  I was so bored.  I know there is a good book in there somewhere, but I just didn't have the patience to wait for it.  I am glad Caleb Carr is writing again, but he really needs a better editor.  This book probably could have been cut in half and been a good solid mystery.

I finished it, but I think that was more out of loyalty to the author.  I think if someone else had written this book, I probably would have DNFed it.  The book wasn't terrible.  It was a good story line.  But like Kari said, it needed some serious editing.  It was SOOO long and repetitive.  It was very wordy and the dialogue was a little silly at times.  Like do people seriously talk like that??  However, I liked the characters and I could see this becoming a series.  Although, I'd much rather more books along the lines of The Alienist or Angel of Darkness.  I like the historical stuff more than the present day I guess.  BUT, I'm glad Caleb Carr put something out there.  Keep it up!

Add to Goodreads

I have read a few of Ms. Foster's books in the past and really enjoyed them. So, I wasn't surprised when I ended up loving Tru Blue.  Truman has been out of prison for 6 months when he finds out his drug addicted mother has just OD'd leaving two more kids who are babies.  Truman decides he won't let them grow up without love and takes them in.  He meets Gemma in the store and the rest is history.

The book really doesn't have much love angst.  In fact, that part is pretty easy and smooth.  Yes, the relationship is fast and super sweet, but that is why I read romance.  To watch two people fall into sappy, goofy love and have a HEA.  The angst comes in the heartbreaking story behind both Truman and Gemma's childhoods.  Neither had the love they deserved or wanted. Both are still struggling. I loved how Truman kept doing things for Gemma that she never got to do growing up.  That sheet fort was too cute.   My heart broke over Truman's struggle with is brother's addiction and the secret they both hold.  I don't want to spoil much, but just say that I highly recommend this story where two babies bring two broken hearts together for a HEA that will make you sigh.

Throwback Thursday: Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume

Author: Judy Blume
first published in 1981 by Dell Publishing Company

Davey has never felt so alone in her life. Her father is dead (shot in a holdup) and now her mother is moving the family to New Mexico to try to recover. Climbing in Los Alamos Canyons, Davey meets mysterious Wolf, who seems to understand the rage and fear she feels. Slowly, with Wolf's help, Davey realizes that she must get on with her life. But when will she be ready to leave the past behind? Will she ever stop hurting?

I thought I would give another Judy Blume book a go after reading Are You There God, It's Me Margaret.  I had rated Tiger Eyes 3 stars on Goodreads based on my memory of how I liked it as a teen.  Now after reading it, I'm not sure I would agree with that rating.  I really didn't care for this one.  Is it because I'm now a 40-something adult?  Maybe.  In all honesty, I found the book depressing and at times really dated.  I'm not sure I would recommend this one to my kids. It's definitely not one of her better books!

Interesting fact though, it is the only book that the author ended up censoring herself.  Based on a recommendation form the publisher, she took out a particular scene that they thought would end up excluding younger readers from picking it up.

The Apartment by S. L. Grey

Author: S. L Grey
Publisher: Anchor Books
Date of publication: October 2016

Mark and Steph live an idyllic life with their young daughter in sunny Cape Town until one day when three men in masks violently break in. Traumatized but physically unharmed, Mark and Steph are unable to return to normal and are living in constant fear. When a friend suggests they take a restorative vacation abroad via a popular house-swapping website, it sounds like the perfect plan. They find a nice artistic couple with a charming apartment in Paris who would love to come to Cape Town. How could Mark and Steph resist the idyllic, light-strewn pictures, and the promise of a romantic getaway? But once they arrive in Paris, they quickly realize that nothing is as advertised. As their perfect holiday takes a deadly turn, the cracks in their relationship grow ever wider and dark secrets from Mark’s past begin to emerge.

Mark and Steph are a South African couple who take a vacation in Paris after their home is invaded by robbers.  The apartment swap seems like a great way to save money and recover.  Unfortunately is doesn't turn out that way they planned.

The Apartment is a hard book to review because there are some major plot points that will kind of ruin the ending.  If I had to rate this book based on the last 1/4 of the story, I would give it 4 stars.  The biggest issue is that the rest of the book was just OK for me.  It was kind of slow and neither main character was ultra exciting.  I hung in there because I wanted to see what how it ended. I actually liked the ending and it almost made up for the rest of the book.  In the end, I think this story had a lot of potential, it just didn't quite hit the mark.  If you go into it not expecting it to be a horror story or even a chilling psychological thriller, you will be all set.

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

by:  Shari Lapena
published by:  Pamela Dorman Books
publish date:  August 23, 2016

Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora, but one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents, but the truth is a much more complicated story.

Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years.

The Couple Next Door tells the story of Anne and Marco.  They've both been keeping secrets from each other.  The secret lives they've been living all start to unravel the night their baby disappears.  She was supposed to be sleeping quietly while Anne and Marco were at a dinner party at the townhouse next door.  While Anne was uncomfortable with the idea Marco convinced her it would be safe since their townhouses were connected.  But late into the evening Anne finds her baby gone.  The remainder of the story tells what exactly happened to the baby and how all of their dark secrets play into her disappearance.

This was a good mystery/thriller.  It was well written and well paced.  This one is a must read for all the psychological thriller readers out there.  There was a lot of buzz about this book during the summer, so there are probably a lot of people with this one on their Christmas wishlist.  It would be a good buy!

Blog Tour: Left at the Altar by Margaret Brownley

Title: Left at the Altar
Series: A Match Made in Texas, #1
Author: Margaret Brownley
Pub Date: November 1, 2016
ISBN: 9781492608134

Welcome to Two-Time Texas:
Where tempers burn hot
Love runs deep
And a single marriage can unite a feuding town
…or tear it apart for good

In the wild and untamed West, time is set by the local jeweler…but Two-Time Texas has two: two feuding jewelers and two wildly conflicting time zones. Meg Lockwood’s marriage was supposed to unite the families and finally bring peace. But when she’s left at the altar by her no-good fiancé, Meg’s dreams of dragging her quarrelsome neighbors into a ceasefire are dashed.

No wedding bells? No one-time town.

Hired to defend the groom against a breach of promise lawsuit, Grant Garrison quickly realizes that the only thing worse than small-town trouble is falling for the jilted bride. But there’s something about Meg’s sweet smile and determined grit that draws him in…even as the whole crazy town seems set on keeping them apart.

Left at the Altar is a quick and clean historical romance that I think fans of this genre will enjoy. The town of Two-Time has two timezones in it. In this town, the two dueling clock makers set the time of day and neither can agree on the correct time to use.  Meg's marriage to Tommy could change all of that, but Tommy changes his mind and leaves her at the altar.

For the most part, I liked it.  It's a cute premise.  I never knew the time thing was a reality back then, but it makes sense.  The author includes more of a historical explanation in her notes at the end of the book.  The characters were interesting enough to keep my interest in the story.  The one thing I didn;t enjoy was the constant inner thoughts that kept cropping up.  Those got a bit distracting.  This is the first in a series.

Excerpt:

Left at the Altar Excerpt #4
I can’t do this!” Meg cried out, hands planted on her waist. At long last, she and Tommy had managed to escape the crowd of well- wishers. Now it was just the two of them, facing each other on her front porch like two combatants.
“I hafta marry you, Meg. Don’t you see? It’s the only honor’ble thing to do.” Tommy looked like he’d just been in a fight. Shirttails hanging over his trousers, he’d somehow managed to lose his bow tie, and his spiked hair stood on end as if it had been combed with an eggbeater.
“Don’t talk to me about honor. If you were all that honorable, you would never have left me at the altar in the first place!”
“I don’t blame you for bein’ riled. If I was you, I’d be mad too.”
“Mad doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel!” She threw up her hands. “You knew the judge was about to rule in my favor. That’s the only reason you agreed to marry me.”
Tommy grimaced and raked his fingers through his hair. His shoulders drooped along with his expression. “Meg…the only way my family can come up with ten grand is if we sell the shop and mortgage the house. Even then”— he shook his head— “that won’t even begin to pay for legal fees.”
“Oh, Tommy, no. You can’t do that.”
“If I don’t marry you, my family will end up at the county poor farm.”
She felt trapped. Worse, she felt sorry for him. For the whole Farrell family. “I don’t want your money, Tommy. I don’t.”
“It doesn’t matter. The judge said if I don’t marry you this time, I better come up with the big bucks else he’s throwin’ me in jail.”
“Oh dear goodness.” Her heart rose to her throat. “He can’t do that.”
“He’s the judge. He can do anythin’ he wants.”
Her mind whirled. There had to be a way. “I’ll have Papa talk to him. Tell him we don’t want the money.”
Tommy shook his head. “The judge made his rulin’. There ain’t nothin’ we can do. ’Sides, everyone is countin’ on the Farrell-Lockwood feud comin’ to an end.” He was right. It was no longer just the two of them affected. It was the whole town. How did life become so complicated?
“What did Grant…uh…your lawyer say?”
If Tommy noticed her slip of tongue, he gave no indication. “He said that marryin’ you was the only way out.”
Tommy only confirmed what she already suspected, but still Meg felt her heart squeeze tight. “He…he said that?”
So he had planned this all along. The kiss was just a…what? A ruse? A game? A way to keep her distracted?
“Don’t look so horrified, Meg. You make it sound like marryin’ me is the end of the world.”
That’s exactly what it felt like, but she didn’t want to say as much. “What…what about Asia and the Pacific Islands?”
Tommy shrugged as if his dreams were of no consequence, but the faraway look in his eyes told her otherwise. “It won’t be so bad. I’ll be a good husband to you, Meg. I swear. I’ll never stray, and I won’t cause you any more problems. Maybe one day, we can go the islands. Just you and me.”
She tried to breathe, but something like a boulder was lodged in her chest. This whole mess was partly her fault. If only she’d known her true feelings from the start. She loved Tommy, she did, but now she realized that love was more like for a brother than a lover.
“I don’t know, Tommy…”
“We don’t have to go to the islands,” he said, misunderstanding her hesitation. “We can go to Paris or Ireland or even Italy.”
The more he talked, the lower Meg’s spirits fell. Her feelings for Tommy had never caused her to lose sleep or stop eating, not even when he’d left her at the altar. Not like the people who wrote to Miss Lonely Hearts. She’d experienced none of the tortured misery of a broken love affair as described in the letters. None of the heartache.
If she could force herself to love Tommy as he deserved to be loved, she would gladly do so. But the heart had a mind of its own, and the most anyone could do was follow.
Of course, that didn’t mean she had feelings for anyone else. Certainly not for Grant. Not now. Not after he’d thrown her under a train, so to speak, rather than lose his case.
“There’s somethin’ else,” Tommy said, staring down at his feet.
She gulped and knotted her hands by her sides in an effort to brace herself. Something in his voice told her that things were about to get a whole lot worse. “What is it, Tommy?”
He looked up. “Judge Lynch is only in town for another week.”
She frowned. “So?”
“That means that I have seven days to come up with ten grand or— ”
Her stomach turned over. “Or…or what?”
“Marry you.”
