Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt of The World's Worst Boyfriend by Erika Kelly

Author: Erika Kelly
Publisher: EK Publishing
Date of publication: April 2018

Six years ago Fin Bowie made a decision that cost him the love of his life. Now his ex is coming back to town for her brother's wedding, and he can finally make things right. Except, right before the event, a text he sent goes viral. Overnight, he becomes an international meme. And it's hard to win your woman back when the whole world's calling you The World's Worst Boyfriend.

The last thing on Calliope Bell's mind is getting back with Fin. Not when her life's just gone sideways, forcing her to spend the summer in Calamity, Wyoming. She can't be away from the New York art world this long, so she comes up with the idea to turn the hottest pop culture event of the moment into a museum exhibition.

The two have every intention of avoiding each other--until the county judge sentences Fin to community service...helping her exploit the meme he's trying to make go away.

The World's Worst Boyfriend is a second chance love story between  two people who need to really do some major growing before they can find their HEA.  It's the first book in a new series about the Bowie brothers. This is Fin and Callie's story

I'm going to be  honest, I did not love this book in the beginning.  Callie drove me nuts.  The failing of their relationship really had fault on both side and she acted as if it was all Fin's fault.  I knew until she understood her part in it, they would never be able to move on. I felt so badly for Fin.  I am happy that I kept going with the story.  I ended up loving watching Fin and Callie "grow up" and find their way back together.  Fin was my favorite part of the book.  Callie, thankfully,  redeemed herself in the end.

The exhibition that Callie started and expanded was such a neat idea.  I loved how it evolved and think it would be a neat place to visit in real life.  I won't give away details, you'll have to read to find out.  The secondary characters were fun and I look forward to reading their stories in the future.  The book kind of ends on a bit of a cliff hanger, so I'm dying to get the next book!  I highly recommend this second chance romance!

Enjoy this excerpt:

“Guess what, Callie?  Love isn’t safe. It’s messed up and crazy and it hurts like hell. But why would you want anything less than what we had? Jesus, what we had—it was more than love. It was…Dammit. Why do I have to explain this to you? I’m empty without you, and no other woman, no friend or brother—no one can take your place. You’re part of me. And I’m sorry but I’m not buying that you’ve moved on. We screwed up, and we got lost, but I will be damned if I accept that you’d rather have some boring, bland relationship than me.” He reached for her, pulling her hard against him, gaze focused on her mouth.
Slowly, he leaned in, overwhelming her with his masculine scent. He pressed a soft, gentle kiss that sent an alarming rush of desire through her body. A lick of his tongue across her lips had her mouth opening to him, welcoming him, and then it happened.
Fin kissed her. Kissed her the way he always had—hungry, desperate, a barely contained expression of carnal need.
He kept his hands to himself, their mouths the only point of connection. His kiss tasted sweet like love, hot like passion, like everything beautiful in the world grew out of this, the tender intimacy of two souls finally, finally rejoining.

The moment she reached for him, restless for the press of his hard body against hers, he tore his mouth away. “You wanna settle for less than that?”

Throwback Thursday: Opposites Attract by Nora Roberts

Author: Nora Roberts
First published in 1992 by Silhouette

Asher Wolfe and Ty Starbuck were tennis superstars - Ty all fire and flash, Asher the ice princess with devastating control. Three years ago, the combination had resulted in a passionate affair. But misunderstandings had catapulted Asher into an unhappy marriage with another man. Now the ice princess was back on the circuit, determined to win. But her concentration was threatened, as Ty's dark eyes dared her to become the fiery woman he had once loved.

If you are a big fan of tennis, then you will probably love Opposites Attract.  This throwback is filled with tennis terminology and tennis matches.  I'm not a tennis fan, so I found those parts of the book a bit tedious and skimmed most of them.  Without them, the book would probably be more of a novella length, so they were probably added for filler.

Aside from those portions, this is an angsty second chance romance with a sweet ending.  A lot of the angst was due to miscommunication that I found frustrating. There were a couple of things that I found annoying, but they are kind of nitpicky.   To me, Asher is not a girl name.  It's a boy name, so that kept throwing me off as I kept picturing a man.  And every time I heard Ty referred to as "Starbuck", I would picture the character from Battlestar Galactica.  Authors really need to think through their name choices. It's not a bad read, but it's not one of her best throwbacks.

Not if I Save You First by Ally Carter

Author: Ally Carter
Publisher: Scholastic
Date of publication: March 2018

Maddie thought she and Logan would be friends forever. But when your dad is a Secret Service agent and your best friend is the president's son, sometimes life has other plans. Before she knows it, Maddie's dad is dragging her to a cabin in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness.

No phone. No Internet. And not a single word from Logan.

Maddie tells herself it's okay. After all, she's the most popular girl for twenty miles in any direction. (She’s also the only girl for twenty miles in any direction.) She has wood to cut and weapons to bedazzle. Her life is full. Until Logan shows up six years later . . .
And Maddie wants to kill him.

Not If I Save You First is the latest YA stand alone from Ally Carter.  I really appreciated the fact that this book is a stand alone.  Sometimes it's nice to read a YA that will not continue on. I was satisfied with the ending and the direction the characters were headed.  I don't need to see them anymore.  In this story, Maddie used to be best friends with the President's son Logan.  When a crisis at the White House goes horribly wrong, her father, a secret service agent, takes her to the middle of nowhere Alaska.

I really enjoyed this book.  It was faced paced and really had me on the edge of my seat.  The characters were interesting and I found myself invested in seeing if they would survive.  Maddie was a great character.  She had spent six years learning how to survive in the wilds of Alaska.  Let's just say that if I ever found myself in Logan's situation, I would want Maddie next to me in the wild.  Logan was not a wimpy guy by any stretch of the imagination, but he was really out of his element.  It was kind of refreshing to see a guy have to rely on the girl for a change.  I also loved reading about characters who aren't looking at their phones, laptops or talking about social media all the time.  It was a welcome change of pace.

There are a couple of surprises thrown into the adventure. One of them, I didn't see coming. I'll let you discover them for yourself.  I definitely recommend this YA.  It's pretty clean so I would say it's safe for the younger YA crowd.  I look forward to seeing what she comes out with next.

Blog Tour: Hero's Return by B.J. Daniels

Author: B.J. Daniels
Series: The Montana Cahills
Publisher: HQN
Date of publication: March 27, 2018

The prodigal Cahill is back—and ready to confess

Tucker Cahill disappeared from Gilt Edge, Montana, hoping to escape a secret that has haunted him for nineteen years. Then, when a young woman’s remains are found in the creek near his family’s ranch, he has no choice but to face his demons. The truth that sent him running years ago could take away his freedom now.

Kate Rothschild came to town looking for vengeance—and Tucker Cahill. What she finds is a tortured and irresistible man who’s more than meets the eye. Caught up in the past, they are drawn deeper into a twisted game that’s not over yet. And the consequences could prove fatal for them both…

Hero's Return is the fifth book in the Cahill Ranch series.    In this one the missing brother, Tucker, has finally come bask to town after almost twenty years.  The skeleton of a woman has been found in the creek and Tucker may have the answer to the identity of the woman.

The book was an OK read for me.  I think I had the same issues as I did with the other two from the series that I have read. After this third book,I can see that this author's books just aren't  my cup of tea. The mystery was kind of interesting but  I just wasn't sucked in right away.   I was a bit disappointed at the reason for Tucker being gone for so long.  His reasons for running away were a bit underwhelming and could have been solved if he had stuck around and talked to the police.  I also thought his family kind of took him back a bit too quickly.

This one is more of a mystery as the romance isn't the dominate part of the book.  In the end, I didn't like the romance aspect and felt it was kind of forced.  I didn't feel the chemistry between the couple.  I think if you go into the book expecting more of a police procedural, then you'll like it more.

Bad Boys After Dark: Brett by Melissa Foster

Bad Boys After Dark: Brett (Bad Billionaires After Dark Book 4) by [Foster, Melissa] Author: Melissa Foster

Sophie is all about forever kisses and happily ever afters. But she can’t deny her attraction to Brett, as enticed by his bad-boy behavior as she is by his devastating looks and his painful past, which she’d like to help heal.

When Sophie’s friend urges her to throw caution to the wind, Sophie leaves the door to her heart ajar—and Brett charges in. But this Bad boy doesn’t know a thing about romance and has no interest in forever, forcing Sophie to make her toughest decision yet—follow her heart or protect it?

My thoughts:

Bad Boys After Dark: Brett was the perfect way to end the Bad brothers series.  I have loved this series form the start.  This one is no exception.  It is Brett and Sophie's story.  Sophie is Brett's brother Mick's assistant.  They have dance around each other for 2 years.  Despite Brett's fear of commitment, there was surprisingly little angst in the story. Which made it so much more enjoyable.  I loved watching Brett finally come to realize that he loved Sophie and was ready to make a commitment.  My favorite parts of the book took place when they visited Sophie's family.  They were really funny and added a lot of sass to the book.  I definitely recommend this one as well as the rest of the Bad brothers series.  Grace's story is up next and is the first in a new series starring the Montgomery family.  I can't wait!

Mick's already crossed a line he can never uncross, and one taste of sweet and sexy Amanda has only whet his appetite. Bad Boys After Dark: Carson (Bad Billionaires After Dark #3)

As the founder of a multimillion-dollar international security business, Carson Bad exposes secrets for a living. He knows better than to forge relationships built on them. But for years he did just that with his best friend, and secret lover, Tawny Bishop.

She brought a sense of calm and understanding to his life—in and out of the bedroom. Until one fateful night when a knock at the door changed everything. Tawny is no longer a naive college student. She’s a sought-after perfumer living in Paris. She has plenty of resources at her fingertips, and lots of lonely nights to think about the only man she’s ever loved—the one she ran away from all those years ago. She needs to move forward with her life, but how can she when Carson still owns her heart

Maybe showing up in the middle of the night unannounced isn’t the best route to unraveling the past and figuring out her future, but Tawny has played it safe for ten long years, and it's only made her long for the man she never should have walked away from. Now she's back in Carson’s life, and he’s determined not to make the same mistake twice. If only he knew what that mistake was…

The Bad Boys are a series of stand-alone romances that may also be enjoyed as part of the larger Love in Bloom series.

Spotlight: Roadhouse by Victoria Danann

Author:Victoria Danann
Publisher: dba 7th House, Imprint of Andromeda LLC
Date of publication: March 2018

She’s on the run. He’s as steady as they come. Karma is calling. And so is the mob.

"New York Times BESTSELLING AUTHOR, Victoria Danann, adds an unlikely, but weirdly charming romance to the SSMC series.”

Get ready for a fire and ice story that proves love is no respecter of plans.

Gin:

How did I end up almost two hundred thousand dollars in debt? It wasn’t as hard as it sounds.

I went to Colombia and studied anthropology. The perfect background to get a great job. Right? Okay. It was a stupid choice. As it turns out, one of several. But I was still a teenager when I picked a major. I’ve since learned that brains aren’t fully developed until years later. A lot of good that information does me now. So I ended up answering phones at a third rate magazine. In New Jersey. When a duffel bag full of big bills showed up in my gym locker, I did what anybody with student loans would do. I paid them off.

It turns out that the money didn’t come from my fairy godmother after all. More like godfather and he’s the furthest thing from a fairy tale. Some goons stashed the bag in the wrong locker. For the mob. It probably won’t surprise you to learn they want it back. So, again, I did what anybody would do. I ran. All the way to the Texas Hill Country. I mean, they wouldn’t follow me there. Right? It’s practically the Outback. Right?

Raze:

It was Bike Night at my place, which meant it was crowded. But when she came through the door, she stood out like a neon sign. I didn’t care that she looked lost or that she had unbelievably suckable curves. And it didn’t occur to me to worry when she looked back over her shoulder. I guess I figured she was looking for a boyfriend or a husband who, if he was smart, would always be real close behind.

The fact was, I needed help. Marjorie called in with some lame excuse, which meant she was fired. Employees can’t bail on Bike Night. It’s a cardinal sin. I don’t really know what that is ’cause I’m not Catholic, but it’s bad. I said, “You got any experience slingin’ drinks?” She shook her head. I gave up a disgusted sigh. “You good with people?” She gave me a cute little smirk that’s probably served her well up to now and shrugged. I shook my head, knowing I’d be sorry, and handed her an apron.

She took it, looked at it like she didn’t know what to do with it. After a second of two she raised those big blue eyes to mine and said, “I don’t have a place to stay.” I looked away so she wouldn’t think she had me by the balls and let go with a stream of cuss words in my head.

“Do a good job and you can sleep in the studio in the back. For tonight,” I said. She gave me a hug like she was grabbing onto a lifesaver and filled my nose with her rainy green apple feminine shampoo smell. ‘Course I didn’t show it, but that hug knocked me on my ass. She was just some woman coming off the road. I knew this. But there was something… I pushed her away. “Just for tonight.” My voice was gruff, sounded harsh. Good. She needed to know my Roadhouse was no plushy crash pad. I was firm. I was clear.

Wasn’t I?
