Synopsis:

Blood Becoming: Halvyn Dawn by Gail Waterhouse

DCI Eleanor Moore is drawn into a series of brutal killings that defy explanation. As she follows the trail of evidence, she uncovers links between the crimes, the vaccine, and a shadowy conspiracy determined to control the future. The investigation becomes painfully personal when Eleanor realises a member of her own family may be entangled in the very secrets she is chasing.

Blood Becoming: Halvyn Dawn is a paranormal crime thriller set in 2046, where the aftermath of a contaminated vaccine has altered humanity in ways no one yet fully understands. Hybrid beings walk among us, their true nature hidden until violence drags them into the light.

Enjoy this guest post about the inspiration behind Blood Becoming from Gail Waterhouse

What If We Never Had to Say Goodbye?

People often ask me where the idea for Blood Becoming came from. Most expect me to say vampires.

The truth is, it started somewhere completely different.

It began with climate change.

Like many others, I wonder what kind of world future generations might inherit. We hear about rising temperatures, extreme weather, wildfires and disappearing habitats almost daily. It made me question how humanity would survive if our planet continued to change. Would science find the answers? Would we adapt, or would we eventually have to evolve?

That question became the foundation of Blood Becoming: Halvyn Dawn, a crime thriller set initially in Britain in 2046. The supernatural creatures were never there simply to frighten readers. They became a way of exploring what it means to remain human in a rapidly changing world.

As I wrote, another theme emerged naturally.

Loss.

Almost every reader will experience the loss of someone they love. Whether it is a parent, partner, friend, family member or much-loved pet, their absence reshapes our lives.

For my family, loss did not arrive just once.

Before losing my husband, Paul, to cancer, we had already said goodbye to close family members. The day after Paul’s funeral, we faced another heartbreaking goodbye when we had to let our little pug, Teddy, go. A year later, my dad died. It felt as though grief had become an unwelcome companion, returning before we had recovered from the last goodbye.

What affected me was not only my own grief, but watching my two sons experience it too. Each of us coped differently. By the time my dad died, I was not sure I had any tears left to cry.

Grief changed me. I found myself emotionally detaching from situations that should have affected me. It was not a conscious choice. It was how I survived.

Writing became great company . It gave me somewhere to process emotions that often felt too complicated for conversation. Many of those emotions naturally found their way into my characters.

Those traits became part of DCI Eleanor Moore.

As a senior detective, Eleanor is exceptionally good at compartmentalising her emotions. It allows her to remain calm in the face of horrific crimes, concentrating on evidence rather than emotion. Yet those protective walls begin to crack as the investigation becomes personal. Family has a way of reaching places we thought we had closed forever.

Grief also made me think differently about memory.

After Paul died, I searched through old videos hoping to hear his voice, only to discover that in many of them he was behind the camera or not speaking. I wished I could preserve a memory, not simply as something I could recall, but as something I could experience again.

That thought became another question.

What if memories were a lifeline? What if someone depended upon them to hold on to their humanity?

Before writing one of my favourite scenes, I travelled to meet my granddaughter for the first time. She lives on the other side of the world, and holding her at the airport brought an overwhelming sense of love and joy.

A few months later, I wrote the scene where Eleanor meets her three-month-old grandson for the first time. As I wrote, tears streamed down my face. The emotion caught me completely by surprise. Only then did I realise how deeply that earlier experience had become part of me.

As the Blood Becoming series unfolds, readers will discover that its central conflict is not simply between humans and supernatural beings.

It is between love and acceptance.

The antagonist possesses the power to protect those she loves from death and is prepared to do almost anything to keep them alive. To her, letting go is not inevitable. It is a failure she refuses to accept.

Eleanor approaches the same dilemma from the opposite side. As a senior detective, she has built her life around justice, ethics and the rule of law. Yet when her family is threatened, those principles are no longer abstract. She must decide how much of herself she is willing to compromise to save those she loves.

That is the question at the heart of Blood Becoming.

We worry about losing the natural world we know. We preserve photographs, recordings and memories of people who are no longer with us. We tell ourselves that death is part of life and some boundaries should never be crossed.

But certainty is easy when the choice is not ours.

If science offered you one chance to prevent the death of someone you loved, would you refuse?

And if saving them meant risking your principles, your humanity or the lives of others, where would you draw the line?

PROLOGUE

Friday 23 February 2046

THE SKY OVER the Spanish port was smeared with the colour of blood smoke, a heavy red-orange haze that clung to the air like the last breath of a dying sun. The scent of burning oil and salt hung thick, carried by the heavy coastal winds. It was sharp and acrid, biting against the damp of the sea. Fires crackled along the ridgelines of the coastal city, their glow flickering in the black water below. Distorted reflections trembled with every wave.

In the distance, the sound of falling glass mixed with the wail of sirens. Their shrill cries sliced through the thickening smoke like wounded animals in pain. Puerto de Málaga, once vibrant with the clatter of trade and the bustle of travellers, was now sprawling in disarray. The heat rose from the charred remnants of buildings, still glowing faintly as they collapsed in on themselves. The air was dense, almost suffocating, with the taste of ash and burning wood. The kind of fire that was all consuming.

At the edge of the docks, where the flames hadn’t yet reached, a body stirred amongst the shadows.

He rose from the ground slowly, uncertainly, like something dredged from the depths. His shirt was torn and wet with dark stains, his skin pale and cool against the rising heat. Beneath the surface of his eyes, something had shifted... something new and ravenous.

He didn’t know his name. He couldn’t remember. Not right now. Names were small things; the world was suddenly too loud for small things.

The salt air reeked of dashed hopes and desperation, but beneath that, beneath everything, was scent. Raw. Delicate. Sweet. It curled into his senses like perfume on fire.

People.

He could smell them.

Not just the sweat on their clothes, but the life blood moving beneath their skin. He could feel their warmth like a beacon. Hear their hearts. See the trails their bodies left in the air – vibrant, electric threads.

And he was starving.

The hunger lived in him like a second spine, twisting through his ribs, pulling at his throat. It was not like needing food, not like any hunger he had ever known. This was something more, something pure. It throbbed like instinct. It demanded.

Ahead, the docks were alive with panicked life. Families clutched their documents, arguing with port guards. Children wailed, sensing the anxiety around them. Ship horns blared over the shouting. The flames had cut off the southern road, and now hundreds of people pushed towards the vessels anchored at the quay, hoping to escape the violence swallowing the city. Amongst the chaos of the port, a young couple moved quickly, weaving through the crowd with a grace that seemed to carve a path of calm through the throngs of fearful, stressed faces. They clung to each other, their hopeful laughter soft but real, a gentle sound that contrasted with the heavy tension in the air.

Their smell hit him like lightning.

They were dark-skinned, their features a striking blend of beauty that caught the light in a way others didn’t. The rich, smooth tone of their skin seemed to absorb the firelight and the fading daylight, glimmering like polished wood. They weren’t the only ones with darker skin in the crowd, but there was something different about them. The way they moved, the way they stood, set them apart. Their essence was clean... pure. Not a trace of the fear or desperation that rippled through the others.

The woman, older than the man by a few years, wore a bright red scarf that fluttered behind her like a banner, bold and proud. The younger man, possibly her brother, had a leather satchel slung over one shoulder, his posture firm, the weight of it a comfort rather than a burden. They moved with a serene assurance, as if they had walked through fire to reach this moment, and now they were here, in this place, they knew they were safe. They were running towards something: towards home.

He couldn’t explain why, but he followed.

They didn’t see him. Not truly. Just a man in a crowd. A shape in their periphery.

Nearby, another couple had stopped at the checkpoint. An argument was unfolding. The air was thick with frustration. Shouts rose above the low murmur of the crowd. A tall Englishman, face red with rage, towered over a Spanish official. His words were clipped, sharp, each one slicing through the tense silence. His fists clenched. Veins stood out in his neck. Every inch of him was pressing forwards, demanding an answer.

Beside him, his wife stood still. She cradled a baby wrapped in a pristine white blanket. She remained silent, her eyes distant, her face pale, betraying none of the anxiety in the air.

The Spanish official, weary and weathered, gestured curtly, his voice firm but tired. ‘The passports for the woman and child,’ he stated, ‘are not valid for the British ship. They cannot board.

They will have to wait for the Spanish vessel, which departs later tonight.’

‘No!’ the man barked. ‘We stay together. We go as a family!’ His words were harsh, but they felt like they hung in the air, falling into the thickening tension like stones in water, creating ripples but no true movement. The woman beside him didn’t speak, only tightening her hold on the baby, whose cries were soft, unknowing. Her gaze, fixed on the horizon, seemed to be somewhere far away, as though the entire scene were not something she could reach.

The crowd around them seemed to retreat, uneasy. The man’s frustration was contagious, yet it failed to spark any real response from the official, who remained unmoved, his eyes cold, his posture rigid. The couple was surrounded by murmurs and mutters from the crowd, but it felt like nobody was truly listening. Concerned only with their own woes.

The woman shifted slightly, sensing something, or maybe it was just the sensation of being watched. Her grip tightened on the baby, her eyes flickering towards the shadows, though she saw nothing. The air around her thickened, and she couldn’t quite place why her heart began to race.

Because he was watching the argument. But he wasn’t watching them – the brother and sister. Their scent, now feeling distant. His mouth ached. His body trembled.

They had slipped from his grasp. The moment was gone. They had vanished into the flow of the crowd, their warmth and purity fading, like smoke lost to the night air. The watcher’s pulse quickened, but the hunt had shifted. He could still feel their faint trace, a lingering pull, but they were no longer within reach.

He quickly moved through the crowd, his steps light, measured, and the scent of sweat and smoke filled his senses, dulling his focus. But then, something changed. His head tilted slightly, drawn by a new, unexpected fragrance that cut through the heavy air. It was delicate, fresh, like the first spring buds on a tree, sharp yet soft. The scent was subtle, fleeting, but unmistakable. It was the scent of a young woman.

Alone.

Nervous.

His gaze flicked in her direction, a predator spotting its next target. He couldn’t see her yet, but he could feel her presence in the air; a vulnerability that stood out against the hardened masses around her. There was a stillness in her, but the air around her vibrated with anxious energy. She didn’t belong to the crowd, not like the others. She wasn’t lost, exactly, but there was an uncertainty in the way she moved, as though the port itself was a vast, unknowable place to her.

He moved slowly through the throng; his every sense tuned to her. Her scent drew him closer, a fragile thread that wound through the chaos. She wasn’t trying to escape, not in the way the others did. She was just... there. Walking, weaving through the people, her eyes darting, scanning for something. Looking for someone. Her nerves were a song to him, soft and fragile.

He could see her now, just ahead, her dark hair framing a face that seemed too young for the worry she carried. Her posture was hunched, as if she were trying to make herself smaller, to disappear into the crowd. She wasn’t trying to be seen, but the watcher saw her all the same.

And she was still.

Thinking.

He felt a stir of anticipation, his gaze narrowing as he took another step towards her. There was something about the way she looked, not at the crowd, not at anything. Her eyes kept drifting towards the shadows, as though she felt something watching her, though she couldn’t know it was him.

He moved closer, quietly... patient. He would have her. She was his now.

He moved silently, a smudge amongst shadows, slipping from container to crate, blending into the murky dark of the port. His steps were slow, calculated, his presence a breathless whisper in the night. Each movement was precise, natural.

Her footsteps echoed on the wooden boards as she moved through the labyrinth of abandoned structures. Her pace quickened, her heart already pounding, as if some deep instinct had begun to warn her. The air was heavy, thick with the scent of rust and salt, the smell of old fish and the faint, lingering tang of blood. This area of the dock felt empty, desolate, but there was something beneath it, a presence she couldn’t quite place. She turned a corner, her pace frantic now, as if her body knew something her mind refused to admit.

She glanced over her shoulder, and there it was, that chilling feeling of being followed. Her eyes searched the darkened spaces, the shadows between the crates, the broken walls of forgotten buildings, but there was nothing. Still, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.

She quickened her step, but then she made a mistake.

A wrong turn.

The path narrowed as she hurried down the dock, the sound of her boots slapping against the timber carrying through the silence. She didn’t see it at first, not until it was too late – a small, isolated room at the end of the corridor. The heavy open door loomed ahead like an invitation. Panic surged through her chest, but there was no turning back now. Her instincts screamed at her to flee, to find another way out, but her legs carried her forwards, into the dim light of the room.

The door slammed shut behind her.

She froze.

The room, that looked like a forgotten storage area, was empty except for some shelves, discarded crates and netting that smelt of old mildew. The walls felt like they were closing in on her, the air thick and close, the silence broken only by the sound of her ragged breathing. There was no way out. The windows were too small, the walls too strong, the door too solid.

And then, a sound. A faint click.

He had locked them in.

Spotlight: Excerpt from Avalon Moon by Michael Amos Cody

AVALON MOON by Michael Amos Cody Banner

AVALON MOON

by Michael Amos Cody

August 24 - September 18, 2026 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

AVALON MOON by Michael Amos Cody

In Avalon Moon, a local man has gone missing and then is soon found dead in a highland meadow, side-by-side with an unknown woman. When another man and woman go missing and a female deputy is found murdered, Gabriel Tanner, editor of Runion’s weekly newspaper, and Plumer Reeves, a reclusive local hawkshaw working for the niece of the first dead man, suspect a monster is hunting in their western North Carolina mountains. Two extraordinary young women, the Avalon community’s Ariel Anderson and Lonesome Mountain’s Livvy Goforth, join Tanner and Reeves to lead the attempt to discover and stop the killer.

Praise for Avalon Moon:

"With wolves across the river and murder in the high meadow, Avalon Moon knows exactly how to raise the hair on your neck. Move it to the top of your book queue."
~ BestThrillers.com

"A deliciously gothic tale stitched into a brutal murder mystery. As a serial killer stalks the mountains of North Carolina, Cody’s precise language shifts effortlessly like light through the trees – from lush gothic poetry to gritty Appalachian realism. Facing ancient gods and hungry beasts in the deep woods, the reader can’t help but dread a darker truth: evil is only ever a breath away."
~ Andrew K. Clark, author of Where Dark Things Grow

"A crime novel featuring a new entry to the list of Most Bone-Chilling Fictional Serial Killers ever committed to paper. Or to e-book. Whatever. The influence of Poe and Hawthorne, at their bone-chilling creepiest, can be felt egging on the unfolding of the story, one eerie development after another. A taut, skillfully crafted thriller."
~ Whiskey Leavins, author of Low Angle Shot

"Avalon Moon relies on vivid, inviting storytelling and precise language to lure you in, and once you’re caught in Cody’s prodigious literary talents, it’s hard to escape. . . . A book you’ll think about long after you’ve finished the story on the page."
~ Bobby Mathews, author of Magic City Blues

"The Appalachian town of Runion is threatened by a serial killer, wolves, and ghosts—literal and figurative—in Michael Amos Cody’s propulsive new novel, Avalon Moon. The tension and constant sense of danger kept me turning the pages, but the heart of the book is the large cast of believable characters. All are rendered with insight, compassion, and humor, and they continued to linger in my thoughts long after the novel’s satisfying conclusion."
~ Peter McDade, author of King Cal

One

Gabriel Tanner

“Editor of and chief contributor to a country weekly” never made my top ten list of things I wanted to be when I grew up. For the longest time, I had only one item on that list—Rock Star! I toyed with adding a second item, maybe being just a hit-making songwriter, but the songwriting I did throughout the 1980s was so closely bound up with the Rock Star! idea that I couldn’t pull the two apart. If I didn’t become the next Bruce Springsteen, which I didn’t, I was unlikely to become the next Bob McDill—ditto on the didn’t.

So, with the Rock Star! phase of my life gone grumbling into my dreams, I left Nashville in the hot gut of August 1990, retreated, tail between legs, to Runion, my hometown in the North Carolina mountains, and the following January entered Runion State University, where I double-majored in English and Journalism. I took a part-time job as student reporter and all-around grunt for Sheldon Dean’s Runion Recorder. A couple years after I graduated, Sheldon decided he was tired of writing and offered me a full-time position as editor, keeping only the title of “General Manager” for himself. I accepted.

And so it came to pass that on a cold evening in early March, on the darker side of twilight, I drove toward the Lonesome Mountain end of Genesis Road, planning to swing around the back way into Runion. On regular mornings going to work, or any other time I was in a hurry, I drove down to the French Broad end of Genesis and took the river road up a short hill and onto Main Street, but I was dreading two hours minimum of sitting in a meeting at the Madison County Cooperative Extension Office complex, housed in the recently renovated Old Mill on Mill Street, and taking notes for a regular report to appear in next week’s paper. The room would be stuffy with heat and humanity, and to be honest, I was lollygagging.

This year’s March was looking like a lion-lamb version—in like a lion, out like a lamb. We expected to wake up the next morning to some serious snow and ice courtesy of Winter Storm Ulysses. The fields on my left and the woods on my right seemed to hold their breath in anticipation.

I rolled to a stop at the T-intersection where Genesis Road dead-ends at Jewel Hill Road, with Lonesome Mountain ahead and to my left, dark against the sky. My new Honda hybrid sat quietly, and still not used to its workings, I thought it might have died but relaxed when no warning lights appeared. Even though the temperature was in the upper thirties, I opened my windows and—with no other traveler sitting at my bumper and politely honking, as our mountain folk do—sat at the intersection with my eyes closed and my skin alive to the chilly air. I heard a few of last summer’s still-tethered leaves shivering in the boughs overhead and something scurrying through the underbrush in the woods off to my right. I think I could’ve engaged the emergency brake and gone to sleep, but I opened my eyes, suddenly uneasy and unsure why.

The headlights shown across Jewel Hill Road and lit the lower part of a hillside pasture beyond. A few head of cattle midway up the slope stood at the edge of the light and grazed on pale grass.

Not one to be unnerved by a bovine presence in the twilight, I strained my senses to catch and identify what raised hairs along my forearms and around the back of my neck.

To my left, a field rolled away in successive swells toward a wooded ridge standing blackly against the sky. Runion lay on the other side of that ridge, but somewhere between the town and me, yips and cries rose from the gathering dark. These joined together into an eerie howl of various voices that twisted around one another, broke apart, and swelled together again.

Coyotes.

When I was growing up in these mountains, coyotes existed only in old TV westerns. But they were voice-over actors only, strictly behind-the-scenes. They were soundtrack features. Technicians of ambiance. Nothing said a cowboy was alone in the darkening wilderness like the distant howl of a coyote. The cowboy would raise his eyes from the campfire and sit still and listen for a moment, alert to the wild. But it was never the coyote itself that frightened him. Maybe the coyote’s cry was a reminder of his loneliness and vulnerability—that if such a critter could be out there in the dark, then anything could be out there.

But in recent years, coyotes had loped out of the faded glory of Hollywood’s western and into our world, maybe crossing the Mississippi around Memphis and moving steadily east across Tennessee until they reached Appalachia and Runion. They were seen trotting along the edges of regional four-lanes or lying dead on twisting mountain highways. They stole cats and small dogs just beyond the lights of back porches. That evening at the stop sign, they yipped and yapped and cried somewhere out on the verge of a Runion farmer’s field.

Still, I thought, at least they aren’t wolves. Wolves, of course, were a different story. Send up the howl of a wolf into the night, and the cowboy would become focused on the beast, not on loneliness or vulnerability. The wolf’s howl menaced, threatened. Eyes might shine at the edge of the campfire’s light, followed by snarling close-ups. Then enter the legend of the wolf mixed with a man, and the beast achieved cinematic glory, jumping genres from westerns to horror, something coyotes could never quite pull off.

When I pressed the accelerator, the Honda whispered to life, and I turned left toward town. If I sat there much longer, I would be late for the extension meeting, during which one item on the agenda just happened to be related to the beasts of my T-intersection musing. . . .

My thoughts:

When the Silence Breaks is the first book in the Mercy Ridge series.  I really enjoyed this one.  This is the second book that I have read recently that is full of action and twists. Sarah is former CIA and is determined to figure out why her brother was murdered and what he was seeking in the mountains.  She hires ex-Navy Seal, Ryder to guide her up the mountain.  While the attraction between the couple, the romance didn't dominate the book.  In the end, it felt natural and I loved where it was left off.  The mystery was wild and not what I was expecting.  There were times I felt like I was sitting on the edge of my seat.  This one would make a great movie.  I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next book in the series.

My Thoughts:

Twilight Tactics is the first book in the Soldiers in Shadows series.  The book opens with a high speed chase and the action doesn't really die down from there.  This book had me on the edged of my seat. If you are really into a lot of action, you will love this book.  I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. It's full of twists and turns.  I liked the chemistry between Sully and Elena. They both came with baggage, but were able to put that aside to open their hearts.  Along with Elena and Sully, we get Ollie's point of view.  I really liked that the author included her thoughts because much of the book is about her.  I loved her ending.  This was a great start to the series, and I look forward to the next book.

Her POV
“You’re older than me by sixteen years. Don’t you want a woman closer to your age?”
“I go by feelings.” He lifted a shoulder. “Besides, being older means I have a lot to teach you.” A wicked smile stretched across his handsome face. “Is there anything you’d like to learn? To know?”
I want to know what it’s like to kiss you.
But I was too embarrassed to say that out loud, especially when my grandfather was just around the corner, probably eavesdropping.
As though Kain understood, he leaned in and whispered, “I’ve imagined doing so many things to you. Very inappropriate things that would have your grandfather kicking me out right now if he knew.” His warm breath caressed my skin, and tingles rushed through me. “Give me the chance to show you.”
Gathering myself, I touched his cheek. “Why are you still single?”
“Like I told your grandfather, I’m waiting for the right woman. I haven’t wanted anyone as much as I want you.”
His honesty warmed me, and I didn’t know what to say. Some people might not be concerned about the big age gap between us, but I was. Kain was an experienced man. Would he get bored talking to someone like me who hadn’t seen life as much as he had? Would he move on after one date?
Give him one date. You have nothing to lose.
Accompanying him at the event would allow me to get to know him.
Before I could reply, Grandpa walked into the room groaning. I knew from his facial expression that he’d been eavesdropping.
“My back is sore from all the cooking.” He stretched to the side. “I heard something about a banquet? In case you’re thinking about inviting me, I won’t be able to make it. I’ve got a bingo game going on with my friend Emilio. You kids go and have fun.”
“It’s not until next week, Grandpa.” Apparently, my grandfather had a friend who lived in my building but forgot to mention it.
“Oh.” He looked up at the ceiling, pretending he’d forgotten something. But I knew the wheels in his head were spinning fast. Looking back at me, he said, “Maybe you can take one of his self-defense lessons and come home to show me. You’re home all week.” He turned to Kain. “Do you have time to squeeze my granddaughter in?”
“I always have time for Eva.”
“I’ll give you my bingo winnings as a thank you.”
Oh my God.
“No need for that,” Kain said, probably suppressing a laugh. “Thank you for lunch.”
I looked at Kain, and an amused glance passed between us—Grandpa had just set me up on a date at the gym. My grandfather was such a troublemaker.
“Thank you for the cupcakes, Kain. I’ll be having one tonight.” Grandpa went back to the kitchen, leaving me alone with Kain again.
“I can’t believe this,” I muttered.
“I can.” Kain looked down the hallway. “He’s a smart man. He knows what’s best for his granddaughter.”
“Is that so?”
“Meet me at the gym tomorrow and you’ll find out.”

He's a property analyst hired to find the cracks.

She's the operations manager who will make sure he doesn't.

Carli Porter runs The Lochwell like it's hers. The coffee shop is her living room. Its book club members are her family. The residents are her friends. The pub is her Friday night. The only problem? The building belongs to someone else, and that someone just sent his best friend to decide its fate.

Alexander Grassi is smart and annoyingly hard to hate. He also has the kind of forearms that make it very difficult to stay mad at him. (She's tried. It hasn't worked.) He's supposed to write a report, hand it over to his friend and leave. He wasn't supposed to start showing up to trivia night. Or turning her coffee cup so the handle faces her. Or looking at her like she's the best thing in a building full of things worth saving.

She says his report could ruin her life.

He says she's not wrong.

She says that's makes him the last person she should want around.

He says he's staying anyway.

Because some legacies (and people) are worth fighting for.

"Did you tell her?" Chris asked Vee as he emerged from the small kitchen at the back of the shop.

"Tell me what?" I asked. Vee slid two coffees toward Maria Grazia and me.

"Only that the hottest guy I've ever seen was asking for you earlier," Chris said. "He wasn't just hot. He was extraordinarily hot. Casual, buttoned-up, perfect hair, two days shadow with a smile that could melt polar ice-caps kind of hot".

"I know the man looking for you. And can guess why he's here," Maria said. She set her cup down. That small, deliberate gesture told me more than her words had. "He's a good man," she added carefully. "His mother is one of my dearest friends. But good men can still be sent to do difficult things".

Before I could figure that out, or even take another sip of coffee, he stepped into the coffee shop. At least, I assumed it was him. But since the Brew didn't often see extraordinarily hot men with smiles that could melt polar ice-caps every day, I assumed that was probably him. His light blue buttoned-down shirt was open, no tie, but the casual tan sport coat still gave him a polished appearance. Honestly? Chris's description was overall pretty spot-on.

He scanned the room, his gaze pausing when it reached us. He smiled at Maria Grazia and headed our way.

"I'm thinking this is Carli?" he asked her.

"You didn't tell me you planned to meet with her, Xander". Maria Grazia's tone was sharper than usual.

"I don't have an appointment," he turned his attention to me. His eyes were hazel, in the best way possible. "And honestly didn't think I'd actually find her. You get around." Xander stuck his hand out. "Alexander Grassi".

A firm handshake from someone accustomed to shaking hands. "Carlina Porter," I responded, defaulting to my full name, as I did when I met someone new.

"I'm a property analyst," he said.

Before I could fully register that, Maria Grazia added, "And one of Graeme Lochwell's best friends".

The bottom dropped out of my stomach. Property analyst. Graeme Lochwell's best friend. Both pieces landed separately, and then all at once, the way bad news always did. I looked at Xander. He wasn't smiling anymore either. Whatever this morning had been before... Lou's Instagram, AnnMarie's bathtub, the abandoned coffee cup on some forgotten high top... it had just become the least of my problems.

Hold on a second. Since when can't we start with the sex scene? That's some kind of bullshit." Everyone laughed. I was pretty sure they thought I was kidding. I wasn't. One simply didn't joke about really good sex scenes, especially when the hero drags the heroine up his chest to sit on his face. "We always start with our overall thoughts of the book," Tiff said, her eyes dancing. She was the leader of our sometimes-unruly pack, but even she couldn't keep the grin off her face. We were sitting in the back corner of The Brew, the coffee shop that served as the heart of the Lochwell. The smell of roasted beans and old wood settled around us like a blanket. Outside, the Finger Lakes sun was beginning to dip, but inside, the heat was all on the pages of this month's pick. "My overall thought is that the hero needs to stop talking and start doing more of... that," I said, tapping the cover. This was my life. My sanctuary. These women were my family, and this building—this beautiful, crumbling, historic brewery—was my soul. I’d spent three years making sure every brick was in place, every tenant was happy, and every cup of coffee was perfect. I was the operations manager. I was the fixer. And I was damn good at it. But as I looked at the door, I saw him. The man who didn't belong here. The man with the expensive suit and the professional audit folder tucked under an arm that looked like it belonged on a Roman statue. Alexander Grassi. He wasn't here for the book club. He was here to decide if the Lochwell was worth saving, or if he was going to recommend his best friend sell it to the highest bidder. He caught my eye through the glass, and for a second, the banter of the book club faded into static. He didn't look like a villain. He looked like a man who knew exactly how much trouble I was about to give him. And God help me, I knew exactly how much trouble he was going to be for me.

When he kissed me, it felt deliberate.

Not rushed. Not distracted. Just…there.

Present.

His hands settled at my waist like he had nowhere else he needed to be, no next step he was trying to get to.

And that was new.

Because in my experience, kissing was usually a means to an end. Something you moved through on the way to something else.

But this?

This felt like the point.

When he pulled back, it wasn’t far.

His forehead rested lightly against mine, his breath warm against my lips.

For a second, neither of us moved.

My eyes stayed closed, like opening them would break whatever this was.

My heart was beating too fast—loud enough that I was sure he could hear it.

And maybe he could, because his thumb brushed slowly along my jaw, like he was paying attention to every tiny reaction.

Like he was cataloging it.

Like it mattered.

My eyes opened.

His gaze dropped to my mouth again, like he wasn’t quite done.

And then he kissed me again.

Softer this time.

Slower.

No urgency. No hesitation. Just intention.

My fingers curled lightly into the front of his shirt, not pulling him closer, just…holding on.

He didn’t rush.

Didn’t push.

He just stayed there with me, like this moment—this exact moment—was enough.

And that was what undid me.

Because I wasn’t used to that.

Wasn’t used to someone not trying to get somewhere else.

Wasn’t used to someone who seemed perfectly content to just be here.

With me.

When he finally pulled back, it was gradual, like he wasn’t entirely convinced he should.

His hands stayed at my waist.

Mine stayed where they were.

Neither of us stepped away.

There was something in his expression now that hadn’t been there before.

Not uncertainty.

Not surprise.

Just awareness.

Of me.

Of this.

Of whatever this had just shifted into.

And suddenly, it didn’t feel like pretending anymore.
