Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt of Love by Design by Katy Ames

Author: Katy AMes
Publication Date: APril 2020

ANNIKA
Cheating husband. On-air meltdown. Public humiliation.
Lucky me, I’ve experienced them all.
Oh, and the implosion of my career as an up-and-coming designer and renovation television darling.
That was then.

Now, I’m in the TV studio, more determined than ever to prove to myself (and the few fans I have left), that I’m back for good. Nothing from my past—no man, no mistake—is going to knock me down again.

If only fate—and Grayson Hesse—had gotten the memo.

GRAYSON
Woodworker. Stone house restoration guru. And the new host of Hesse and a Hard Place.
This is what I know:
If this show’s a success, I’ll finally be able to give my family the financial stability they need. My chances of success go way up if I have the best designer in the business working by my side. And the best in the business (despite the lingering rumors) is Annika Hale.

She’s the triple threat: brilliant designer, restoration maven, and the woman who stole my heart six years ago…and hasn’t looked back since.

But that was then.

Now… Well, what is it they say? After all, 425 Madison is the perfect place to fall in love.

My thoughts:

Love by Design is the 16th book in the 425 Madison Avenue series.  This is Grayson and Annika's story.  I thought it was a cute second chance romance.  I liked the chemistry between the couple.  The story includes flashbacks to then they first met and their one night together.  It helped give me a better view of how intense their feelings for each other were then and in the present.  I only wish the story was a bit longer.  I think the length took away form the little mystery that shows up toward the end.    I do recommend this one.

I watch my best friend chew a hole in her lower lip. “Explain, Abby. Before you make yourself bleed.”
Abby opens her mouth. I brace myself for whatever she’s going to say and don’t hear a single word. I don’t hear anything at all, except the deep, rumbling laugh that rolls through the soundstage.
My stomach does cartwheels and every single hair on the back of my neck stands pin-straight. My anxiety before? It’s got nothing on the nerves that are about to knock my knees right out from under me.
That laugh—his laugh… It’s as potent today as it was the first time I heard it.
My eyelids flutter shut. All worries about first-day nerves and my shitty ex-husband and career recovery vanish. Into that mental void rushes a series of images, ones I’d mistakenly sworn, hoped, prayed, I’d forgotten.
A sweltering summer night. Low whispers and lurid words.
Large calloused hands finding the secret, most sensitive parts of my skin.
Lips made for sinning and promises whispered in a voice that sounded like salvation. A voice that belongs to a man who vanished without a word.
A man who, if I’m reading my friend’s—no, strike that, former friend’s expression correctly, has just claimed a starring role in the horrifically-timed comedy that is my life.
Abby’s eyes dart between my face and the person behind me. Plastering on a smile, she swivels her finger in what I’m assuming she thinks is the “turn around now” sign. “Annika, this is Mr. Hesse.”
I pivot, thrust out my hand, but can’t unglue my eyes from the ground.
M. G. Hesse.
G. As in Grayson, the quiet, kind, insanely hot carpenter I met on my first network design job.
As in the only man I’ve ever fallen for so hard, so fast, I didn’t stop to ask his last name before tumbling into his bed. Hell, I didn’t even care.
As in the guy I thought, against all the odds, would disprove my mother’s lessons about how untrustworthy men are—only to become the poster child by morning.
A broad palm slides against mine, fingers curling into a warm grasp. A jolt of awareness lights up my nerves, and my eyes finally lift to a face I haven’t seen in six years. Since the day I woke up in his bed, naked, in love, and alone.

About Katy

Katy writes contemporary romances about heroines who aren’t afraid to kick ass, heroes brave enough to love them, and stories that get a little messy before ending happily ever after.
She’s mom to two boys whom she loves to bits but wishes would sleep a lot more than they do, and wife to a man whose reading habits are far too serious. Katy and her family reside in Washington, D.C., a city in which she never planned to live and loves so much she’d be happy to talk about it for hours. Just ask.

Arya
I know I can make you blush.
It’s a weird claim to fame, but a perk of my dream job: being the voice of your favorite romance audio books. Laughter, hijinks, adventure. Passion. Sweet heaven, the passion. It’s everything I could ever want. Except…
The problem with this fabulous life?
It’s all just fantasy.

Picking between Chinese and Thai delivery doesn’t count as adventure.
The bestie who always makes me laugh is thousands of miles away.
As for the hunky hero? It’s not like he’s just going to come crashing into my apartment.

Until the night a bearded stranger does exactly that…

 Gavin
Do the job. Get the bad guy. Go home.
Most importantly, don’t get involved.
Those are the rules. The agency’s and mine. And they work. Even better, they give me the perfect excuse to keep my distance.
The perfect escape from getting burned again. Except…

Why can’t I stop watching her?
I shouldn’t care more about what she’s doing than my target.
I shouldn’t let her distract me from the job.
And I sure as hell shouldn’t fantasize about a woman I’ll never meet.

That is, until the night I surprise us both by kicking down her apartment door. Rules or no rules, it's true that...

After all, 425 Madison Avenue is the perfect place to fall in love.

*Each story is completely standalone.

My thoughts:

Accidentally in Love is the latest story in the 425 Madison Avenue novella series.  This is Arya and Gavin's story.  I enjoyed this one immensely.  I loved the instant chemistry between the two.  I also loved how they got to know each other as friends before lovers.  The only thing I wish was that it was a longer story.  I would have loved to spend more time with this couple.  I highly recommend this one as well as the series a whole.  You don't have to start at the beginning.  Just pick one and dive right in!

“Number one rule of tailing someone: don’t breathe so loud they can hear you five flights away.”
“Hey!” I say, thwacking his chest. “Don’t be a jerk. Besides, I don’t think you’re in the position to give spy tips right now.”
One bold eyebrow lifts in question.
Pushing out of his grasp, I whip the hat off my head, breathing in relief as cool air hits my skull. “Isn’t the number one rule of spying not to pick up a tail in the first place?”
The first eyebrow drops, followed by the other. Green eyes turn sharp, primitive, before brightening. A roar of laughter erupts from his chest. We stand there for who knows how long, me huffing and puffing, and Gavin laughing like I’ve just delivered the funniest one-liner he’s ever heard. When he stops, his chest is heaving as hard as mine. One last chuckle escapes when he clocks my annoyed expression.
“Oh, come on. You should be proud. It’s been forever since I laughed that hard. That alone should make up for giving yourself away. Besides, it was a good effort. For a first timer.”
“Ugh,” is the only answer that seems fitting. “When did you realize I was there?”
“Hmm,” he says, stroking his beard, his lips still twisted in a smirk. “Down in the alley. When you scraped that thing against the wall.” He points at the metal tip on the large umbrella.
“You heard that?”
“Hmm,” he repeats, head bobbing. “That and a lot more.” Gavin sweeps his eyes down my body, lingering on my boots before pivoting and heading down the hall.
“Wait, what else?” Keeping up is impossible, what with my thigh muscles screaming and pain scorching my foot. He slows his pace without glancing back, his strides shortening until I catch up.
Another step and another wince, and Gavin mutters something under his breath before lifting me off my feet. My own smirk turns to a shriek when he throws me over his shoulder and swats my butt before continuing down the hall.
“That was completely unnecessary.” My complaint lacks edge, which I blame on the view of his very fine ass.
“Quite the opposite, Ms. Winters. Consider it punishment for ignoring my warnings about staying away.”

About the author:

Katy Ames has spent mo
st of her life on the East Coast and hopes to spend more of it in the UK, primarily so she can indulge in her serious plaid obsession. There isn’t a teenage drama or a period British TV show she hasn’t binge-watched at least twice. And she can be persuaded to do almost anything with the promise of bourbon, chocolate, or a nap (not necessarily in that order).

Katy is mom to a small human who has an obscene amount of energy and a blissful ability to ignore swear words, and wife to a man whose reading habits are far too serious. Katy and her family reside in Washington, D.C., a city she where never intended to live and loves so much she’d be happy to talk about it for hours. Just ask.
