Blog Tour: Review of Summer with a Single Dad by Leigh Adams

One night of passion would do just fine. It was all I could afford to give.

Chris caught my attention from the first moment I saw him at my favorite local hangout. And then he set my body on fire from the first touch. We both agreed it was a one-night deal. I had nothing else to offer him, no matter how good that one night was.

As the sun rose the next morning, I slipped away, leaving him and our night together right where they belonged—in the past.

I should have been able to forget him. Out of sight, out of mind… right? Except, every once in a while, his face would pop into my mind, reminding me how much of an effect he’d had on me.

One year and one internet search later, the man I couldn’t forget landed on my front step, and he was no longer out of sight, out of mind. He was right in front of my face.

Training his terror of a dog would prove easier than keeping my feelings for Chris in check. I saw right through his clever tactics—using his adorable yet unruly dog, Lucifer, as a ruse to spend more time with me.

The man I left behind after one night had one mission: to prove to me that our connection was too powerful to forget. As time passed, we laughed, flirted, and reconnected far beyond the single night we shared. We sparked once again, and I discovered it was more difficult to train my heart than a four-legged furball.

Intuition told me to pump the breaks—I swore there was something Chris was holding back from me. But the more I learned about him, the more there was at stake, and I had a decision to make:
End our sultry-night-turned-summer-romance or embrace the beautiful chaos surrounding the guys who stole my heart.

My thoughts:

Summer with a Single Dad is a short and very sweet romance.   Chris and Emily had a one night stand.   9 months later, chance and an untrained dog brought them back together.  Both have some baggage and wonder if they can find love again.  I enjoyed this one. The relationship that developed between Emily and Chris's son was very cute.  I also loved the relationship Chris had with his family. The ending was a HFN and I would have loved an epilogue.  I think there is another story coming out with these two characters, so I look forward to reading that one.

Spotlight: Excerpt from The Berlin Apartment by Bryn Turnbull

Author: Bryn Turnbull

“Wholly immersive and impeccably researched, Bryn Turnbull’s tale brings the time vividly to life.” —Toronto Star on The Paris Deception

For fans of Kate Quinn and Kristin Hannah, this sweeping love story follows a young couple whose lives are irrevocably changed when they’re separated overnight by the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Berlin 1961: When Uli Neumann proposes to Lise Bauer, she has every reason to accept. He offers her love, respect, and a life beyond the strict bounds of the East German society in which she was raised — which she longs to leave more than anything. But only two short days after their engagement, Lise and Uli are torn violently apart when barbed wire is rolled across Berlin, splitting the city into two hostile halves: capitalist West Berlin, an island of western influence isolated far beyond the iron curtain; and the socialist East, a country determined to control its citizens by any means necessary.

Soon, Uli and his friends in West Berlin hatch a plan to get Lise and her unborn child out of East Germany, but as distance and suspicion bleed into their lives and as weeks turn to months, how long can true love survive in the divided city?

13 AUGUST, 1961

Uli stared out his apartment window, his pulse beating wildly in his ears. Seven stories below, a tangle of concertina wire ran the length of Bernauer Strasse, bisecting East Berlin from West: onlookers on both sides of the wire watched, muttering, as green-uniformed Grenztruppen, separated from the East German citizenry by a line of Volkspolizei, jackhammered the cobbles to fix stakes into the ground and carted in more spools of barbed wire, rolling it out with gloved hands.

Was it war? He studied the faces of the border guards, searching for an indication of panic, of fear, but they looked measured and resolute. Was it a planned operation, then? A provocation?

He needed to find Lise. He pulled on a shirt and trousers and descended into the fray.

Outside, the sound of jackhammers was a relentless snarl that drowned out the fury of Berliners on both sides of the wire, shouting their ire. In the East, a mishmash of soldiers—police officers and border guards and members of the People’s National Army—stood with their backs to the west, shoulder to shoulder, as guards hammered stakes in place.

“Uli!”

He wrenched his attention away from the barbed wire to see Jurgen’s stocky, sandy-haired figure. “Have you spoken to Lise?”

Uli shook his head: across the street, a scrum of people had formed around a nearby telephone box. “I only just came outside. I’m still trying to piece together… What’s going on?”

“Ulbricht’s sealed the border.”

“Sealed it?”

“Yeah.” Jurgen bit his lip, and Uli knew that he was thinking of his family, his brother and sister-in-law and niece, living in Bernau. “People kept saying he was going to do something, but I never thought…” He trailed off. “You’ve not seen Lise?”

“Not since Friday.” Uli searched for a higher vantage point— a bench, the bonnet of a car—and gestured for Jurgen to follow him toward a rusting Mercedes, parked on the opposite side of the road. “Have you spoken to your brother?”

“I tried telephoning Karl, but they’ve cut the wires. I heard they’ve sealed off the U-Bahn and S-Bahn as well… I don’t think anyone can make contact.”

Uli jumped onto the bonnet of the Mercedes. What purpose did it serve to cut the telephone lines? He gave Jurgen his hand and tugged him up on top of the car: from here, they could see past the guards and jackhammers to the bewildered East Berliners beyond.

“Lise was out of town, wasn’t she?” Jurgen muttered. In the empty streets beyond Bernauer Strasse, Soviet tanks rolled in and out of view in the direction of Brandenburg Gate: Where was the answering military presence from the West? He turned, hoping to see British or American troops: on a far-off corner, a pair of French soldiers watched the growing crowd but made no attempt to move closer. Surely, they had to intervene?

Uli turned back to the barbed wire and his heart lurched: there, coming down Brunnenstrasse, was Lise. He shouted her name and waved to catch her attention: she turned and lifted her arm in response.

Uli leaped down from the car and made his way toward the wire. He muscled past men and women with Jurgen in his wake, rising onto his toes to keep Lise in his sights.

A shout rang up behind him—“Fascists!”—and the crowd surged forward. He stumbled, and a West Berlin police officer caught him before he hit the ground.

“Watch yourself.”

Uli straightened. “My fiancée. She’s in the East,” he began, hearing in his voice the panic he was trying, and falling, to quell. On the opposite side of the wire, Lise was pushing forward too, her pale head visible as she tried to reason with a Grenztruppe. “I need to speak with her, if you could just let me through, she’s right there—”

The officer’s expression was pitying and fearful in equal measure. “I have my orders. No one is to approach the barrier,” he said. Across the wire, a second Grenztruppe turned his head, listening to their conversation over his shoulder. “They’re operating within East Berlin, we have no jurisdiction to intervene—”

“They’re tearing the city apart!” Uli shouted, his rational mind reeling against the sheer absurdity of what was in front of him. He took another step, searching for a break in the wire. “If I could just talk to her—”

The officer’s grip on Uli’s arms was mercilessly hard. “If you want to start the next world war, keep going,” he hissed, before shoving Uli back. “There’s nothing I can do, mate. Take it up with Walter Ulbricht.”

He stumbled into Jurgen, trembling with a rage he’d never felt: an impotence, a helplessness that he’d not experienced since he was a boy.

“Easy…this might only be temporary,” Jurgen said, his hand steady on Uli’s shoulder. “We ought to go to Brandenburg Gate. We might learn more about what this is—there will be reporters, politicians—”

On the other side of the wire, he watched as Lise’s own attempts to reason with a border guard failed: she stepped back, looking distraught. “If Ulbricht really is sealing the border, we need to act now. We need to find a way to get to Lise—bring her across—”

“I know.”

Uli broke off midsentence, wrenching his eyes away from Lise. Jurgen stared at him, resolute, and his steadiness gave ground to Uli’s panic, helped him think beyond his own fear, his own anger.

“We need to act now, but whatever we do, it can’t be here,” Jurgen continued. He was right: they couldn’t push through, not here, where there were so many people, so many sets of eyes. “We find a break in the wire—a gap…” “They can’t be everywhere all at once,” Uli said. “Further along,” Jurgen whispered back, and Uli’s heart quickened. Across the wire, Lise stared at him, and he jerked his head, knowing that Lise would understand—she nodded, and melted back into the crowd.

“C’mon,” he muttered, and he and Jurgen took off down the street.

Single dad, Wade Jenkins, Magnolia Grove’s landscaping hottie who likes to mow lawns without a shirt on is thrown for a loop when his spirited seven-year-old daughter Goldie comes to live with him. While Wade’s thrilled to have his daughter full-time, there’s one little issue . . .

The elementary school principal.

Lemon Walsh is a woman who doesn’t live life to the fullest, despite her best friend urging her to all the time. When someone from her past shows up front and center, she has no choice but to finally reconcile the decision she made in college.

Will one of her students be the catalyst for change?

My thoughts:

Endless Summer Love is the 8th book in the Magnolia Grove series.  I have really enjoyed this series so far.  This one involves  Lemon and Wade.  I will admit that this one wasn't my favorite of the series.  The entire conflict between the couple hinged on whether they were on a break or not. I had flashbacks of Ross and Rachel  from Friends and their constant fight over that very thing. It really got old and I thought Lemon was a bit unreasonable.  So instead of talking it out with the man, she just chose to avoid him for years.  I wish that part was shorter in the book.  It dragged out too long and left little room for the couple to spend really talking things out and getting to know how they had changed over the years.  I did love Wade, however.  What an awesome dad he was to Goldie.   I did like the ending and I think it's worth reading.  I hope Ana gets her own HEA.  That woman deserves it.

Excerpt:

“Wade . . .” I say his name for the first time, to him, in years. It hurts, hearing my voice call out to him.
He stops and sets his shovel down. I didn’t expect him to walk toward me, but he does. Each step of his is deliberate and forceful, almost like he’s trying to leave his impression in the grass. He’s wearing his khaki cargo pants and from experience I know each pocket has something he’ll need today. A tool, twine, or trimmer line for the weed wacker. I’ve spent countless hours sitting on my parent’s front porch, watching him cut lawn with precision.

I’m out of breath when he comes face to face with me. He stands close. Close enough that we share the same air. Everything in my mind tells me to step back, to put a wall between us, but my heart sings at the closeness. I know I’ll never win the battle of hating him as long as we’re in the same town.
We stare at one another, taking each other in. His dark hair, brown eyes, and scruff all call to me, beg me to get lost in everything that is Wade Jenkins. I have loved this man for most of my life, and yet he’ll never be mine.

Release Blitz: Excerpt from Whiskey Kisses by Rochelle Allison

When an injury prevents Tristan from fighting in the ring, his family puts him in charge of taking over Doyle Whiskey. It’s the perfect opportunity for him until the owner's daughter, Evie, stumbles back into his life. Time may have changed them both, but when Tristan discovers Evie’s life is in danger, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, even if it means marriage. Readers who enjoy marriage-of-convenience romances will devour Whiskey Kisses by Rochelle Allison, a steamy friends-to-lovers, mafia romance.

Caught between family loyalty and their affection for one another…

Tristan
I always get my way.
Fighting is my life. In the ring, on the street, there’s no problem that can’t be solved with my fists.
When an injury puts me on the sidelines, my family sends me down South on business. They want me to take over Doyle Whiskey, a job they claim is perfect for me.
And it is, until the owner’s daughter stumbles back into my life.
Evie’s not the shy, awkward girl I knew as a kid. She’s beautiful and fierce, and she doesn’t need me.
Until she does.

Just because I can’t step into the ring, it doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten how to fight. Especially for a girl like Evie.

Evie
Our marriage might be a sham, but our friendship isn’t.
When my father’s debts land him in hot water, there’s a lot more than just money on the line. My freedom is at risk, and if I don’t figure something out, I could end up married off as payment.
But then Tristan shows up to take over our distillery. He’s as gorgeous as ever, but he’s not the sweet, mischievous boy I crushed on as a kid. He makes deals and takes what he wants and when he sees that I’m in danger, he takes me, too. In marriage.

I know he’s protecting his own interests by protecting me, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve wanted him my whole life, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect him right back.

Because the queen’s the most powerful piece on the board.

Whiskey Kisses is a steamy, dark, Irish mob romance. Marriage of convenience, m/f, friends-to-lovers, forced proximity.
It's the second book of the Gangland Hearts trilogy, which should be read in order. Recommended for mature audiences

“He and Danny Deschamps made an agreement. If I marry Cole, all of Daddy’s debts to them will be canceled. And then they’ll pay off his other debts, too, because we’ll all be one big, happy family.” Her voice breaks, and she covers her face.
Anger ripples through me like a stormy sea, frustration crashing against the shores of my restraint. Evie’s being bartered off like chattel to cancel her father's debts? I knew that fucker was ruthless, but I never thought he’d stoop this low.
I squeeze her knee. “Your father can’t do that.” But he probably can. As bad as this is, I’ve seen worse. Men like Randall Doyle will do whatever it takes to cover their own asses. Even sacrifice the people they’re supposed to be protecting.
“He can, Tristan.” She’s breathing choppily, like she’s on the brink of hyperventilating. “I tried to talk him out of it, but he just got madder and madder. I live on his property … I have nowhere else to go. And even if I did leave, he’d find me. This is a small town—he knows everyone, and so do the Deschamps.” She looks up at me, her bright eyes wet and panicked.
“Is this why you avoided my calls today?” I shift to look at her, struggling to keep my voice even. “You should’ve told me right away.” Evie marrying Cole would be a disaster. Not only would it completely fuck our plans to take over Doyle’s distillery, but it would also bind Evie to someone she hates.
“Why, so you could counterattack?” Her eyes narrow, even as tears spill from them. “I wasn’t thinking about you, okay? I have enough shit to deal with on my own.”
She’s not totally wrong, but she doesn’t realize how much I actually care. About her, not just the distillery. “You’re not marrying that asshole, okay?”
Evie's lower lip trembles. “Once my father makes a deal, there's no going back.”
“He doesn't own you," I snap. “You're a person, not property. And that distillery is mine.”
“But—”
“Don’t underestimate me. You have no idea what I’m willing to do,” I say softly, gripping her chin. “What I want to know is, what are you willing to do?”
She blinks as my hand slides away. “Anything,” she whispers.
“We’ve known each other for a long time, Evie, and despite all of this bullshit, you do know me,” I say. “Do you trust me?”
It takes a long time, but eventually she gives me a single nod.
“Then marry me instead.”

Review: Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay

Author: Paul Tremblay
Publisher: William Morrow
Publication: June 2024

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions — demons of the past be damned.

But at what cost?

I had to sit on this one for a while.  Horror Movie is told from the perspective of the guy who played the "thin kid"  in an indy horror movie shot in years before. A remake of the film is in progress and he recalls what happened on the set of the original.  He is a consultant on the remake and as he recounts his story, things become more and more bizarre.

I definitely thought this was a creepy book.  There were also some gory parts that I usually like in my horror.  So, I did overall enjoy the book.  The ending was a great twisty ending. My main issue with it was, I'm not sure I fully understand what was going on.  I don't feel like the "lore" was fully explained. That left me wanting more from the story.  Overall,  would recommend this one.  It was creepy enough to keep me interested in seeing how it would end.

Review: Razor's Edge by Heather Slade

Author: Heather Slade
Publisher: Sparrow Publishing
Publication Date: July 2018

When love cuts like a knife...

K19 Security Solutions Partner Tabon Razor Sharp has seen his fair share of tragedy, but one thing is for certain: He never forgets a face. Agreeing to be his buddy's groomsman means he'll once again reunite with the enchanting and gorgeous Ava McNamara. Unable to finish what they started last time, he's more than ready to reignite the spark with Ava.

But the wedding brings on more than he bargained for. Meeting Ava's father throws a wrench into his plans. Her father isn't who he claims to be. And Razor is determined to uncover all the facts. Torn between exposing a criminal and protecting Ava, he struggles between duty and desire. Now, it's up to Razor to protect the woman with the haunted eyes even if it means destroying everything she's ever known. Will they recover from the truth or will Razor's cut wound her too deeply?

While each book in the “K19 Security Solutions” series is a stand-alone with its own HEA, they may be more enjoyable listened to in order.

Razor's Edge is the first book in the
“K19 Security Solutions” series. Even though the synopsis said it can be a stand alone, it really doesn't work very well that way.  It is the first in a series, but there are so many characters from a different series (Butler Ranch) that show up in this one. I kind of felt like I was missing important information. They kept making references to things that happened in the past and I really needed more context. So I'm seeking out the first book in the reading order suggested on the author's website (Brodie's Promise).

I did really like Razor. However, Ava drove me crazy.  She was so insecure.  How many times did the guy have to tell her he was into her before she believed it?  Especially for someone who practically raised herself.  She didn't seem very confident or independent.  I'm not sure I was completely sold on their relationship at the end. Still, I liked this one enough to read the next one and to start at the beginning. I listened to the audiobook and the dual narrators really worked well.

Review: Taste of Summer by Cata Ree

Author: Cata Ree
Publication Date: August 14, 2024

Chefs and their egos…

It never ceases to surprise me the lengths Chefs will go to keep control.

When I came to Seaside, Oregon to save "Blissful Craves", I never expected to butt heads with the head chef, Oliver Hastings. He's aggravating, short-tempered and has vowed to make my life miserable.

But I've never been known to back down from a good challenge.

With the Seaside Festival on the horizon and a restaurant to revamp, what could possibly go wrong?

Taste of Summer is a steamy, opposites attract love story, including a mega grump and his unexpected sunshine. Hot pans won't be the only thing sizzling during this banter-filled, grumpy sunshine romance.

Taste of Summer is a stand alone story that is part of the Summers in Seaside Series.

Taste of Summer is part of the Summers in Seaside series.  It's a very quick and cute love story involving a woman whose job it is to save restaurants who falls for a grumpy restaurant owner in a small town.  I read this in one sitting. I enjoyed watching Oliver and Melanie fall for each other.  My only complaint is that the story was too short.  I wish I could have spent more time with them and I would love to see how they end up in a later story.  I do recommend this one.
