The Haunting of Sunshine Girl by Paige Mckenzie & Alyssa B. Sheinmel

Author: Paige Mckenzie & Alyssa B. Sheinmel
Publisher: Weinstein Books
Date of publication: March 2015

In that place where you're more asleep than awake any more, I hear something else. A phrase uttered in a child's voice, no more than a whisper: Night Night.

Something freaky's going on with Sunshine's new house . . . there's the chill that wraps itself around her bones, the giggling she can hear in the dead of night, and then the strange shadows that lurk in her photographs. But the more weird stuff that happens, the less her mum believes her. Sunshine's always had a quirky affiliation with the past, but this time, history is getting much too close for comfort . . .

If there is something, or someone, haunting her house, what do they want? And what will they do if Sunshine can't help them?

As things become more frightening and dangerous, and the giggles she hears turn to sobs and screams, Sunshine has no choice but to accept what she is, face the test before her and save her mother from a fate worse than death.

The first in a frighteningly good new series based on the popular YouTube sensation The Haunting of Sunshine Girl Network, created by Paige McKenzie.

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl was a random pick from my library when I was perusing the audiobook shelves.  Apparently it is based on a YouTube show with the same name.  I had never heard of the show before I picked up the book.  I just thought it looked interesting.  The basic premise is that Sunshine was adopted as a baby.  She was abandoned at a hospital.  Her mother is a nurse and gets a dream job in Washington (the state).  When they move into their new rental house, Sunshine begins to feel that things aren't right.  She is convinced the house is haunted.

I thought this was pretty good story.  I enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and ones that I would be willing to read more about in future books.   I thought the author did a fairly good job of world building and giving information surrounding the mythology of what Sunshine's destiny is supposed to be.  However, this being the first book, I felt like I was left with more questions than answers in the end.  I can only hope that they are answered in the next book.   What can I say?  I'm impatient and want it all now!

It's definitely a clean YA and would work for most kids over 12.  There were some creepy moments but nothing too scary.  It looks like it is going to be  a series.  I do want to read the next book, because there is a little cliff hanger at the end of this one. I am intrigued to see what happens next with Nolan and Sunshine.

I've never heard of this book or the Youtube series, but I'll have to look out for it now. I don't like anything too creepy, so it might be worth a try.

Sounds like a good book. I'll have to see if they have it at my library.
