Quinn Maybrook just wants to make it until graduation. She might not make it to morning.
Quinn and her father moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs to find a fresh start. But ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half. On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.
Kettle Springs is caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress. It’s a fight that looks like it will destroy the town. Until Frendo, the Baypen mascot, a creepy clown in a pork-pie hat, goes homicidal and decides that the only way for Kettle Springs to grow back is to cull the rotten crop of kids who live there now.
I love a good teen slasher book and/or film. I was holding out hope that Clown in a Cornfield would be one to add to my list of favorites. While it didn't necessary completely live up to my expectations, I still enjoyed the overall horror aspect of the book. The book involves Quinn, who is new to town. Her first day at school finds her in detention with the "popular" kids who have a desire to make it famous in YouTube. She quickly realizes, the small town is at war with itself and she is caught in the middle.
As far as the gore factor goes, I loved it. It had the right amount of gore to make is a decent 'slasher" story. Some of the deaths were over the top, but any slasher fan will appreciate that. I did find the characters interesting and not your stereotypical teens. That was a bit refreshing. I found myself rooting for them. I also liked that no one was safe. The epilogue was a bit predictable.
My biggest issue with the book was the lack of suspense. I figured out what was going on very early on in the book. There needed to be more build up and maybe a twist or two to keep me guessing. Maybe if the whole book had been written from just Quinn's perspective it would have been harder to figure it out so quickly. Having multiple perspectives took the surprise out of the reveal for me. I usually see slasher films as kind of cautionary tales for teens and I guess there was one here. However, I'm not convinced they learned anything in the end.
This is the second book that I have read by this author. I'll have to check out his back list and give him another try. I think this would be a good movie. Who doesn't love killer clowns? So, would I recommend it? Sure. It was a fun, just not everything I wanted.

My thoughts:
Camp Lenape is a middle grade/YA mystery. This is exactly the type of story that I would have devoured as a middle-schooler. It's a quick story that takes place at a summer camp. A group of friends thine there is something strange going on at the camp and decide to investigate.
I thought it was a fun mystery. I enjoyed the characters. They were well written and actually acted and sounded like kids in Junior High. I appreciated that. It's a short audio book with great narrators. It looks like this one is the first in a series, so I look forward to more adventures with these characters. I would highly recommend this one, especially to any middle grade or younger YA reader.

My thoughts:
Into the Blue is a stand alone romantic suspense that takes place in paradise. I can tell you that after reading this book, I need a vacation on an island like the one featured here. For the most part, I did enjoy the romance. I loved Kellen and Makayla. I loved how they healed each other of their nightmares. I was rooting for them. I felt like that story was lighter on the suspense and heavier on the romance. But that was OK. It was still enjoyable. I would love to have a peek into Adam and Mia's story. Maybe we will get one in the future.

Spotlight: Love Her Well by Kari Kampakis
Author: Kari Kampakis
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Publication Date:August 18, 2020
Moms are eager for tips and wisdom to help them build
strong relationships with their daughters, and Kari Kampakis’s Love Her
Well gives them ten practical ways to do so, not by changing their
daughters but by changing their own thoughts, actions, and mind-set.
For many women, having a baby girl is a dream come true. Yet
as girls grow up, the narrative of innocence and joy changes to gloom and doom
as moms are told, “Just wait until she’s a teenager!” and handed a disheartening
script that treats a teenage girl’s final years at home as solely a season to
survive.
Author and blogger Kari Kampakis suggests it’s time to
change the narrative and mind-set that lead moms to parent teen girls with a
spirit of defeat, not strength. By improving the foundation, habits, and
dynamics of the relationship, mothers can connect with their teen daughters and
earn a voice in their lives that allows moms to offer guidance, love, wisdom,
and emotional support.
As a mom of four daughters (three of whom are teenagers),
Kari has learned the hard way that as girls grow up, mothers must grow up too.
In Love Her Well, Kari shares ten ways that moms can better connect
with their daughters in a challenging season, including:
- choosing
their words and timing carefully,
- listening
and empathizing with her teen’s world,
- seeing
the good and loving her for who she is,
- taking
care of themselves and having a support system, and more.
This book isn’t a guide to help mothers “fix” their
daughters or make them behave. Rather, it’s about a mom’s journey, doing the
heart work and legwork necessary to love a teenager while still being a strong,
steady parent. Kari explores how every relationship consists of two imperfect
sinners, and teenagers gain more respect for their parents when they admit (and
learn from) their mistakes, apologize, listen, give grace, and try to
understand their teens’ point of view. Yes, teenagers need rules and
consequences, but without a connected relationship, parents may never gain a
significant voice in their lives or be a safe place they long to return to.
By admitting her personal failures and prideful mistakes
that have hurt her relationships with her teenage daughters, Kari gives mothers
hope and reminds them all things are possible through God. By leaning on him,
mothers gain the wisdom, guidance, protection, and clarity they need to grow
strong.

Review: The Night Swim by Megan Goldin
Author: Megan Goldin
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: August 2020
After the first season of her true crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall is now a household name―and the last hope for thousands of people seeking justice. But she’s used to being recognized for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help.
The small town of Neapolis is being torn apart by a devastating rape trial. The town’s golden boy, a swimmer destined for Olympic greatness, has been accused of raping a high school student, the beloved granddaughter of the police chief. Under pressure to make Season Three a success, Rachel throws herself into interviewing and investigating―but the mysterious letters keep showing up in unexpected places. Someone is following her, and she won’t stop until Rachel finds out what happened to her sister twenty-five years ago. Officially, Jenny Stills tragically drowned, but the letters insists she was murdered―and when Rachel starts asking questions, nobody seems to want to answer. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers startling connections between the two cases that will change the course of the trial and the lives of everyone involved.
I was so looking forward to reading The Night Swim. I loved The Escape Room and was hoping I wooed love this one as well. I'll be honest, I didn't love it and I'm not completely sure I liked it. In The Night Swim, Rachel is a True Crime pod-caster who is in town to cover a rape trial of a high school student. While she is there, she gets letters from someone who wants Rachel to look into a death that happened years before.
There was a twist at the end that I didn't guess, but it wasn't enough to save the book for me. Rachel was just kind of a boring character. She felt generic to me. I was more interested in the story that is told to us through the letters Rachel received. The other thing I wasn't a fan of was the way author wrote every male in this book. I understand what she was trying to do by making the rape trial a parallel to a recent real life trial of a college student who got a slap on the wrist , but it was just over the top. Every single male in this book was either a pig or woman abuser. Really? Not all men are like that and to pretend otherwise is disingenuous. It was annoying and got old.
It's an OK mystery, but not thrilling. I found this one slow paced and not all that interesting. I didn't even really love the podcast excerpts that were included. I think I'm in the minority when it comes to this one. So, give it a try and see for yourself.

“It’d be stupid to do it here. She’s easier to move while she can still walk. Let me take care of her, then I’ll come back for you both. Stay low, don’t use your flashlights. The police will stop at the farmhouse first. We’ve got time.” He wrapped his arm around Coral’s waist—she was thinner, but still steely strong—and half dragged, half ran with her to where he’d seen her car earlier in the day, when he’d made his own excursion out here.
Self-recrimination threatened to stop him in his tracks as he knew he should have made doubly sure she wouldn’t be on the property when ROC came looking for Markova’s treasure. But he’d run out of time to verify his source who’d told him she’d be out tonight. Even with her being here, he’d never have expected she’d catch them—usually his ROC associates were somewhat competent. Unlike these two.
Thank God for inept thugs.
When they were what he estimated was halfway to her car, he pulled out his pistol and held her tight with his other arm. “Hang on. I’m going to shoot at the ground, to let them think it’s you.” He quickly fired two shots at the dirt, making sure the bullets had nothing to bounce off, making it sound like he’d just eliminated a witness.
The sirens were close, and he saw the patrols turn into the long drive leading to the barn area.
“What are you doing here, Trevor?” Her voice shook, but he couldn’t tell if it was shock or anger. Probably both.
“I’ll explain later. Right now we can’t be seen by anyone.”
“But that’s the police—I called them.”
“I can’t be spotted, and for now you’re with me.” He had no way of knowing which officers were re-porting, and he couldn’t risk being taken into custody. Only two SVPD officers were cut in on his deep undercover work.
Now the woman on his arm was one more added to the list of people in the know. The woman he’d never forgotten, whom he’d still go through hell and damnation for. His ex-wife, Coral.

Kevin
With everyone around me settling down, I’m happy to continue
living my life single and carefree.
That is unless I can convince the concierge, Lucy Wilson at
425 Madison to finally take me up on that offer to go out on a date.
She’s beautiful, friendly, and her compassion for each and
every one of the residents is admirable. Something tells me that she doesn’t
see herself that way at all though.
This is why I’ve made it my mission to break her out of her
overly cautious shell starting with a lucky penny and a $10 raffle ticket.
It was all supposed to be a little fun but when a large dose
of lucky graces us, everything suddenly becomes unexpected.
Lucy
He thinks I don’t see him, but I do. Oh yes, I’ve been aware
of the all too good looking Kevin Harper for quite some time now.
The thing is, I’m not sure that we have enough in common and
I sure don’t have the free time for a social life between my job and school.
Dating? That’s pretty far down on the list of things I’d like to check off -
not by choice.
That is until Kevin convinces me that a little fun is good
for the soul.
What started as a $10 raffle ticket turned into a vacation
in Vegas and a whole lot of expectations that neither of us saw coming.
I always believed in fairy tales, but I wonder if what we
have is too good to be true. I can only hope that it’s true what they say…
After all, 425 Madison is the perfect place to fall in love.

Unexpected Expectations is the first book in the third "season" of 425 Madison Avenue series. I love this series and it was a pleasure to return to familiar characters again. This one is Lucy and Kevin's story. I thought this was a great romance. It was also a great advertisement for why you should never just get married on impulse without first getting to know your future spouse. Communication is key in every relationship and, boy, this couple needed to learn that the hard way. I liked them both, although I wanted to smack Kevin upside the head a few times for being a butthead. I was rooting for them. I loved the solution that Kevin came up with to see if things would work out. It made me want to put him on my book boyfriend list.
If you haven't yet delved into this series, I highly recommend it . Each book can be read as a stand alone, so don't worry about having to catch up. Just pick one and dive right in.

My fingers brush the smooth copper coin reminding me that I
have a second mission to complete. I pinch the coin between my fingers and walk
toward the concierge desk. Just like I hoped she would, there stands one of the
most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. Standing around 5’4, the golden-haired
beauty has curves in all the right places. She’s soft around the edges, but I
can tell by the way her uniform fits her body that she’s got a sexy as fuck
body underneath. Today, her thick locks are pulled low in the back, but her
waves fall over her shoulder. I’d love to give that hair a yank in the throes
of passion. Shit, I’d love to do a lot of things to this girl.
I’ve flirted with Lucy for a while now, and she’s one of my
favorite parts of visiting the building. I’m not a shy man, and I enjoy a good
romp between the sheets, but Lucy, I could tell right off the bat is the kinda
girl you don’t have meaningless romps with. Nah. She’s a
take-home-to-your-momma kind of girl.
My mom would love her.
Maybe, one of these days I’ll ask her out. Heck, I don’t
even know if she has a boyfriend or not. It’s never stopped me from flirting,
but flirting is harmless. The lady seems damn good at her job, maybe she is
just that good at dealing with flirts like me every day.
I come to a stop in front of her, leaning my arm on the
desk.
“Heya, Lucy. Seen any tangerine trees or marmalade skies
lately?” The Beatles reference earns me a stunning smile.
“Hi Kevin, how are you today?”
I give her my sexiest smirk. “I’m better now that I’m seeing
your gorgeous face.” My words hit their mark, and Lucy’s cheeks turn a sexy
shade of pink.
“Okay, Mr. Charmer.” She giggles a bit. I always feel like
an accomplished mother fucker when I get a girl to giggle. Especially a girl
like Lucy, she’s not a giggler. Which is something I dig about her. Besides her
looks, she seems to be whip-smart and down to Earth. Most likely, she doesn’t
come from money, or why would she be working this gig? She has to deal with the
rich and spoiled day in and day out, and she doesn’t lose her cool. I’ve seen
her in action, and I’ve seen the way some of the residents treat her. I’ve had
to bite my tongue a few times. As Jake has reminded me, this place is private
property, I can be banned from the building.
I snap my finger, pretending to recall something important.
“I actually have a gift for you.”
Two dainty eyebrows arch in surprise as I lift the penny
between my thumb and forefinger.
“A penny?” Her tone is full of amusement.
“Yup. I found a penny outside the building. You know what
they say, “If you find a penny, pick it up, if it’s heads, you’ll have good
luck.” I smirk as I finish the saying. Pleased with the soft smile that plays
at her kissable lips.
“You know, I’ve never told anyone this before…” She leans
toward me and lowers her voice as if she doesn’t want anyone to hear. “When I
see a penny on the ground, if I notice its tails up, I lean down and flip it
over. Hopefully, I can help someone else find a little good luck.”
My heart slams against my chest. Her words nearly cause me
to stumble. Who is this woman? She takes the time to flip over a penny just in
case the next person who comes along can find a lucky penny? Why does hearing
this nearly shatter my charming, nothing gets to me-exterior?
Why?
Because I do the exact same thing.
I clear my throat.
“Don’t worry, Lucy girl, your secret is safe with me.” I
extend my hand toward her, and she holds out her hand. I carefully place the penny
in her open palm and slowly drag my fingers across her bare hand. I’m expecting
the sizzle from our touch, but I don’t miss Lucy’s reaction to our chemistry
when I hear her tiny intake of breath.
She closes her hand around the lucky penny and pulls her
fist in toward her chest, holding it to her heart.
