Legendary by Stephanie Garber

Author: Stephanie Garber
Publisher: Flatiron Books
Date of publication: May 2018

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister's. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval...the games have only just begun.

Legendary is the sequel to Caraval.  It has been over a year since I read Caraval, but I had an easy enough time picking up the thread of the storyline again a year later.  This story is told through Donatella's perspective and features a whole new game of Caraval. This time around, the stakes are a lot higher.

For the most part, I thought it was fairly solid follow up to the first one. Actually, I enjoyed this book more than the first book. I enjoyed having Donatella's perspective.  She seemed more mature in this one than she came across in the first book. The best part about the book was the new game.  I felt like it was clearer as to what she was trying to do to win the game.  I remember in Caraval, not being completely sure of the world and how the game worked.  The one thing I love about the game is you don't know who to trust.  It really raises the level of suspense in the story.  I will say though that I wasn't overly surprised when the identity of Legend was revealed. It was easy enough to figure out early on. The ending left things open for the last book Finale which comes out next year.  I am really interested to see what comes next for the Dragna sisters.
