Wanted by J. Kenner

Author: J. Kenner
Publisher: Bantam Dell
Date of publication: January 2014

He is everything I crave, all I desperately want—and he is everything I can’t have.

Evan Black embodies my every fantasy. He is brilliant, fierce, and devastatingly handsome. But he is also headstrong, dangerous, and burdened with secrets.

My family warned me to stay away, that I could never handle Evan’s dark dealings or scarred past. Maybe I should have listened. Maybe I should have run. But our desire is undeniable, and some temptations you just can’t fight.

And from the moment we touch—the passion between us consuming us both—I know that I will never be the same.

Wanted is the first in a new series by J. Kenner.  I loved her Stark trilogy and this new series is just as good.  Evan Black was briefly introduced in Take Me, the follow-up novella to the Stark series.  You guys know I am a sucker for friends to lovers stories.  Angelina has known Evan for years.  She has also wanted him for a long time.  Evan has stayed away from Angie because he feels he is a bad bet for her.  Their attraction is strong and very hot!  There are some great love scenes.

I loved these two together.  I think that they both were able to help each other figure out how to be true to themselves.  Angelina has spent years doing things that her dead sister would have done with her life. She feels guilty over the circumstances of her sister's death.  She also wants to constantly please her father.  The problem is that she has been denying her true calling in life.  Evan is able to help her work through this issue and make the right decision for her life. Evan is the ultimate bad boy.  He has done what he had to do to make sure his mother and sister can survive.  Now, he wants to clean up his act for Angelina.

The story has a little bit of mystery surrounding an ancient art book.  I liked how that part of the story played out.  The thing I also liked about this book is that it has a HEA in the end. Unlike her last trilogy, each of the books in this set will feature with a different couple. The next two books in the trilogy will deal with Evan's friends Cole and Tyler.   I can't wait for Heated, which comes out in May!

Our desire runs deep. But our secrets cut close. Beautiful, strong, and commanding, Damien Stark fills a void in me that no other man can touch. His fierce cravings push me beyond the brink of bliss—and unleash a wild passion that utterly consumes us both.

Yet beneath his need for dominance, he carries the wounds of a painful past. Haunted by a legacy of dark secrets and broken trust, he seeks release in our shared ecstasy, the  heat between us burning stronger each day.

Our attraction is undeniable, our obsession inevitable. Yet not even Damien can run from his ghosts, or shield us from the dangers yet to come.

My take:

The thing I hate a bout trilogies is that once I have read the third book, I know the story is over.  While I am happy with the ending, I am also sad say goodbye to  characters I have come to love.  That is how I feel about the Stark trilogy.  I have thoroughly enjoyed this series as a whole.  Two damaged people find one another and through their love, they learn to heal and look toward the future.

In the final book, Damien and Nikki's relationship is pushed to the limits.  Damien is on trial for murder in Germany.  Someone is stalking and threatening Nikki.  There is a lot against them but relying on each other gets them through.  As in the other books, the love scenes are very hot.  There are light BDSM elements, but they really enhance the relationship between the couple.  I loved the end although I wanted more.  Maybe we will get a novella that takes place a few month or years later?  I would love to see how they are doing.  I look forward to seeing what Ms. Kenner comes out with next.

Dancing with Damien

I love to dance, and unfortunately my husband doesn’t, so as a general rule I don’t go very often.  But I remember fondly all those weekend nights during college and my early working days (and, let’s be honest, weekday nights, too!).

And, to be even more honest, dancing was always the best when you were doing the bump and grind with a guy you were dating or (even more fun) a guy you were interested in … and who was interested right back.  There’s a sensualness to being on the dance floor.  To feeling a primal rhythm and moving with it.  To cutting loose to music and going with the flow—flirting with body and motion.

So it was great fun in Complete Me to send Damien and Nikki to a popular dance club in Munich.  I can’t say I’ve ever been there in person, but I read all about the place, and I hope to go someday—it sounds like a blast (though I don’t know if I’m cool enough to get through the doors!)

To be honest, even off the dance floor, Nikki and Damien have had that same electric sensuality that builds while moving with the music.  But even so, it was fabulous to put them together with a heavy beat and a strong urge of passion.  It definitely added to the heat that is already always bubbling between them!

I won’t tell you where things go from there … but if you know Nikki and Damien, you can probably guess!

Love to dance?  Do you still get the chance?

The Chemistry of Dialogue
by J. Kenner

I love banter.

I love it in books, I love it in movies.  Frankly, I think that’s why I love romances (in print and on film) because the odds are the characters will have some great back and forth moments.  And those moments build tension.  They build the relationship.  And, yeah, they make us as readers (or viewers) fall in love with the characters, too.

This is not a new thing.  Shakespeare was a master the sharp witted lovers.  And classic movies are often classic in large part because of the memorable dialogue. A  quick Google search about the Thin Man movies (some of my favorites) revealed what I already knew: that one of the reason those films are classics is the witty banter between Nick and Nora.  And even more recent, I was watching The American President the other night, and that’s another one that has some stellar dialogue between the characters.  (Sydney trying to apologize for the “tight ass” remark leaps to mind.)

I’ve shouted out a number of times about how much I love the In Death series by J.D. Robb, and one of the reasons is the back-and-forth between Eve and Roarke.  (As an aside, someone slap me down and tell me to get over the urge to re-read the series.  I really don’t have the time, and there are a ton of books in my TBR pile that I’ve not yet read!)

So, naturally, I’ve been thrilled when readers tell me how much they love the banter between Damien and Nikki.  And considering how much I love the Thin Man movies, I was over the moon at this review of Claim Me:  “Honestly, I got a whole Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man movies) vibe during these flirtatious interchanges. Updated and more risqué, but definitely a modern day twist on the classic couple.” Thanks!!

She even quoted one of my favorite interplays from my current release, Claim Me:

Nikki: "'Should I alert the financial papers?' I'd teased. 'Doesn't it affect the market when Damien Stark takes a day off work?'"

Damien: "'I'm willing to risk global economic collapse if it means a few hours with you.' He drew my hand up and kissed the tip of each finger. 'Of course, the more shopping we do, the more we support the economy.' His voice was low and sultry and full of enticing promises. 'Or maybe we should go back to the apartment. I can think of several interesting ways to spend the afternoon that have no fiscal impact whatsoever.'"

Nikki: "'Tempting.' I'd retorted. 'But I don't think that I could stand the guilt knowing that I traded an orgasm for fiscal ruin.'"

Damien: "Trust me, baby. It would be more than one orgasm."

How about you?  Do you love witty or sexy banter?  Any favorites to share?

One lucky commenter will win a copy of Claim Me! (print for US winners, digital for international winners!)

Review: Claim Me by J. Kenner

Author: J. Kenner
Publisher: Bantam
Date of Publication: April 2013

For Damien, our obsession is a game. For me, it is fiercely, blindingly, real.

Damien Stark’s need is palpable—his need for pleasure, his need for control, his need for me. Beautiful and brilliant yet tortured at his core, he is in every way my match.

I have agreed to be his alone, and now I want him to be fully mine. I want us to possess each other beyond the sweetest edge of our ecstasy, into the deepest desires of our souls. To let the fire that burns between us consume us both.

But there are dark places within Damien that not even our wildest passion can touch. I yearn to know his secrets, yearn for him to surrender to me as I have surrendered to him. But our troubled pasts will either bind us close . . . or shatter us completely.

Claim Me is the sequel to Release Me which I reviewed back in December.  I was a big fan of the first book and am happy to say that I am a big fan of the second book.  I really enjoyed this sequel.

As with most sequels, the book serves to further strengthen the relationship between the two main characters.  The readers learn a bit more about Damien and his past. He and Nikki have come to the end of their arrangement, yet both are reluctant for the relationship to end.   Throughout the book, Nikki is convinced that something is bothering Damien. I was a bit surprised when the truth is revealed.

If you are looking for a mild romance, you won't find it here.  The love scenes are sensual, raw and and very hot.  As in the first book, the dom/sub element is part of the book, but doesn't overwhelm the story.  While I loved the ending, I was frustrated with the semi cliffhanger.  Only because I don't want to wait for July to see how it all works out in Germany!  Yes, I'm impatient!

He was the one man I couldn’t avoid. And the one man I couldn’t resist.

Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me. Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past—and risk breaking us apart.

But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him—and us—forever.

Release Me is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

My take:

Just like Bared to You by Sylvia Day, which I loved, (my review) Release Me by Julie Kenner is yet another book that proves there are great writers of erotica out there. You just need to know where to look.  Ms. Kenner has produced a well written and extremely sensual story.  I devoured this book.  The characters were strong, the writing was flawless and the story was captivating.

I read this one pretty quickly.  I had a hard time putting it down once I started it. Both Nikki and Damien share secrets from their past. As their relationship grows, Nikki comes to realize that their backgrounds are very similar. I really liked Nikki.  Nikki is a flawed, yet strong person.  She may be young, but she is uber smart and is not naive.  Damien is powerfully rich, but he isn't an ass.  Yes, he is very much an alpha male, but he was never crude to Nikki and I felt he genuinely cared about her.  This book does deal with the Dom/sub topic, but I felt it showed a genuine portrayal of that type of relationship. It's about pleasure and trust, not about demeaning the other person.

I won't bring up that other book, (you know... the one I didn't like), because frankly, there is no comparison. You should read this one, not that one. Seriously, what are you waiting for? It comes out January first.  Why not start the year right?

I can't wait to read the next one, Claim Me, which comes out sometime in 2013.  I know I will be stalking the bookstores for that one!

Thanks for joining us today, Julie!

Kari & Autumn: What inspired you to become a writer?

Julie: That is such a good question, and just don’t have a solid answer.  I can’t remember really wanting to be anything else (though there was the obligatory “I wanna be a vet” thing—do all little girls have that?).

I've always written stories.  Even before I could write—or read, for that matter—I’d bang out stories on my dad’s old typewriter.  His home office was in a loft accessed by a spiral staircase that overlooked the living room and I would go up there, sit at his desk and (dating myself here) type so fast that keys stuck together.

In high school, I tried to write very erudite and “important” short stories that were really just boring and pretentious.  Why I did that is anyone’s guess, as my reading was primarily Stephen King and Sidney Sheldon,  so it’s not like I was reading boring and pretentious!

I did journalism in high school and college until I switched my major to film.  Then I wrote screenplays.  Then I went to law school and had no time to write, but when I started working I wrote a play, then moved to Los Angeles and had no time to write.  Then I realized I was going crazy for the lack of a creative outlet and moved to a smaller firm so I could write.  I finally wised up and started to write genre fiction, and I “broke in” with a romance.  I've been writing non-stop ever since!

Kari & Autumn: Where do you come up with the ideas for your books?

Julie: I would say that I wish I knew, but I really don’t; that might steal the magic!

Seriously, they come from all over.  Sometimes, it’s a snippet of conversation.  Sometimes it’s a title; “The Good Ghoul’s Guide to Getting Even” came to me as a title before the story or characters.  Sometimes it’s a concept (a judicial system for paranormal creatures became my Shadow Keepers series, written as J.K. Beck).  Sometimes it’s a genre.  I wanted in chick lit, but I love paranormal.  That managed to morph into my demon-hunting soccer mom series.

I’m an only child and as a kid I traveled a lot.  I get car sick when I read, so I made up stories in my head.  Whether that’s a cause or an effect, I don’t know.  I do know that I have enough book-worthy ideas that I could spend the rest of my life writing them.  Toss in the crappy ideas and I have several lifetimes’ worth!

Kari & Autumn: What exciting projects are waiting in the wings?

Julie: The most exciting is the next two books after Release Me – Claim Me and Complete Me.  I’m thrilled they’re both coming out next year, but at the moment writing and revising them is my primary focus.

In addition, I’m re-releasing my demon-hunting soccer mom books(written as Julie Kenner) in digital format, and once they’re all up early next year I’ll be releasing the sixth book! I’m so thrilled that Kate’s coming back to fans and new readers!  (and I just accepted an offer from 1492 Pictures and their producing partner to renew the movie option on book one, Carpe Demon, so fingers crossed!)

Of course, I’d love for folks to check out my website to see all the stuff I have going on!

Kari & Autumn: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

Scarlett O’Hara, and for so many reasons.  She’s such an honest character.  Her good qualities and her bad are right there on the page.  She’s strong, but it takes awhile for her to realize it.  She’s frustrating in that she could have everything she wants, if only she weren’t so thick-headed.  She’s smart, except when she isn’t.  She’s cold, except when she isn’t.  She’s utterly fascinating.

Other favorites are Claire from the Outlander series, Eve Dallas from the In Death series, Meg from A Wrinkle in Time, Charlotte from the Inspector Pitt mysteries.  Oh, man, I could go on and on (can you tell I love books in series?)

Kari & Autumn: Just for fun, if you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

Julie: A cat!  I love cats.  Cats are pampered and petted.  Cats are independent.  Cats were once worshiped (I’m pretty sure my cats still think they are).  Cats get to sleep whenever and wherever they want.  Cats have attitude.  Cats can purr.

And I have an “interview” question for readers:  What’s the first book that truly made an impact on you?  Mine was “Half-Magic.”  I read tons of books before that, but something about that one clicked with me and I read, re-read and then glommed the author!

Thanks so much for having me!
