Review: European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman by Theodora Goss

Author: Theodora Goss
Publisher:  Saga Press
Date of publication: July 2018

Mary Jekyll’s life has been peaceful since she helped Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson solve the Whitechapel Murders. Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherine Moreau, Justine Frankenstein, and Mary’s sister Diana Hyde have settled into the Jekyll household in London, and although they sometimes quarrel, the members of the Athena Club get along as well as any five young women with very different personalities. At least they can always rely on Mrs. Poole.

But when Mary receives a telegram that Lucinda Van Helsing has been kidnapped, the Athena Club must travel to the Austro-Hungarian Empire to rescue yet another young woman who has been subjected to horrific experimentation. Where is Lucinda, and what has Professor Van Helsing been doing to his daughter? Can Mary, Diana, Beatrice, and Justine reach her in time?

Racing against the clock to save Lucinda from certain doom, the Athena Club embarks on a madcap journey across Europe. From Paris to Vienna to Budapest, Mary and her friends must make new allies, face old enemies, and finally confront the fearsome, secretive Alchemical Society. It’s time for these monstrous gentlewomen to overcome the past and create their own destinies.

European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman is the sequel to The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter (my review).  I was really looking forward to reading this one because I thoroughly enjoyed the first book.  I wasn't disappointed.  It is a long book at over 700 pages.  However, I didn't feel like it dragged in anyway. The book can be read as a stand alone.  But, I would advise reading the first book before this one. It is a better way to understand the Athena Club members' origin stories.

I loved this sequel.  It was so much fun spending time with these characters again.  Diana is still secretly my favorite character.   The humor in the story was so refreshing. I loved the adventure adn there was never a dull moment.  In this outing, the women are once again fighting a secret society of alchemists.  They travel to Budapest to rescue Lucinda Van Helsing from the evil clutches of her father.  This was such a unique the twist on Dracula's story.  The book ends on a big cliffhanger, so I can't wait for the next one to come out.  I highly recommend both books!

Blog Tour: Review of Summer of Scandal by Syrie James

Author: Syrie James
Series: Dare to Defy Series
*Each novel is a standalone story.

Publisher: Avon Impulse
Publication Date: September 11, 2018

Madeleine Atherton is no typical American heiress, sent to England to marry an English lord. A brilliant college graduate who secretly dreams of becoming a published author, she wants to marry for love. After receiving a proposal from a future duke, Madeleine flees the London Season for Cornwall to seek her sister’s advice, never expecting her decision to be complicated by a charming, handsome earl she’s certain she dislikes—even though his every touch sets her blood on fire.

Charles Grayson, the Earl of Saunders, has secrets and ambitions of his own. Although under pressure from his mother and gravely ill father to marry his cousin, Charles cannot find the words to propose. But this fascinating American visitor does not figure into his plans, either.

Thrown together unexpectedly at Trevelyan Manor, Madeleine and Charles struggle to rise above their intense attraction. But as things heat up between them over a summer that becomes increasingly scandalous, Madeleine and Charles will both be forced to make a difficult choice. Can two dreamers dare to defy convention and find their own happily ever after?

I have been wanting to read a historical romance for a while.  I'm happy to say Summer of Scandal fulfilled that craving.  This is the second book in the Dare to Defy series involving the Atherton sisters.  They are American heiresses visiting England to each find a titled match.  In this one, Madeleine does not want to accept a proposal from a man she doesn't love.  She flees to visit her sister to think about her next step.  Bad weather causes her to spend time at Charles's estate.  Even though he is unofficially promised to another, their chemistry can't be denied.

This was an enjoyable read.  Their romance was a very slow burn.  At times, it was a bit too slow, but once they finally kissed, the story took off from there.  I liked these two together.  Madeleine was head strong and wasn't willing to settle for anything less than she deserved.  I admired Charles's drive to invent things to help the people on his estate.  These two were perfectly matched.  The book works well as a stand alone and is one I definitely recommend.

2 in 1 Novellas: Review of Cake & Sugar by Lauren Dane

Author: Lauren Dane
Publisher: Harlequin
Date of publication: September 2013

Art student-slash-bike messenger Wren Davis pursues what she wants. And what she wants now is Gregori Ivanov, rock star of the Seattle art scene. With his tattoos, piercings and sensual sneer, Gregori is the ultimate bad boy. Wren’s gotten to know the man beneath the body art, too—and it only makes her crave him more.

But Gregori loves women like he loves cake and champagne—intensely, but only for the moment. And after Wren experiences just how scorching sex with Gregori is, she’s determined to show him that just one taste won’t be enough...

Cake came out before the Whiskey Sharp series. However, I read it after I read the first three books in that series.  Wren and Gregori are side characters that show up occasionally in the series, so it was nice to go back and see how they ended up together.  The story was cute.  I loved Wren and her determination not to give up on something that she knew was amazing between them. I really enjoyed this novella.  It's a good stand alone, so give it a shot.

Author: Lauren Dane
Publisher: Carina Press
Date of publication: September, 2018

Bad-boy artist Gregori Ivanov wants nothing more than to marry Wren Davis. He’s asked her before—more than once—but she insisted on waiting until she’d established her own career. Now that the time is finally right, Gregori has one hell of a celebration in mind. Restaurants, museums and NYC luxury all the way…on top of all the newlywed sex they’ll be having.

The universe, unfortunately, did not get the message. When their plane is grounded in Idaho, they’re forced to improvise a road trip to get back to Seattle instead of the romantic getaway Gregori painstakingly planned. But that they’re together is what’s important, and with giant roadside potato museums, funky galleries in towns with little more than two stoplights and some seriously great diner food—in between all the great sex—Gregori and Wren find a honeymoon as unique and memorable as their love.

Sugar picks up with the couple six years after they finally got together.  Gregori finally gets a yes from Wren when he proposes.  On their way to eloping, weather diverts them and they decide on an impromptu road trip wedding/honeymoon.  While I enjoyed this one, it wasn't my favorite of the two.  The adventure was fun, but it didn't really add much to their story.  It was a nice check-in and still worth checking out.

Review: Campfire by Shawn Sarles

Author:  Shawn Sarles
Publisher: jimmy patterson
Date of publication: July 2018

While camping in a remote location, Maddie Davenport gathers around the fire with her friends and family to tell scary stories. Caleb, the handsome young guide, shares the local legend of the ferocious Mountain Men who hunt unsuspecting campers and leave their mark by carving grisly antlers into their victims' foreheads.

The next day, the story comes true.

Now Maddie and her family are lost in the deep woods--with no way out--being stalked by their worst nightmares. Because there were other, more horrifying stories told that night--and Maddie's about to find out just how they end...

Campfire had the potential to be a really good horror story. Yeah, it wasn't. The story takes place on a camping trip.  Maddie, along with her family and some family friends are camping for a week as one last goodbye before her brother and friends go off to college.  After two nights of campfire ghost stories, some of them start to come true.

This book was just plain bad.  I'm not even sure that I can find something I liked about it.  It was fairly short, so it had that going for it.  The campfire stories were more interesting than the overall story.  However, the rest of the book involving Maddie and the other characters was dull until about the last third of the book.

The characters were fairly forgettable.  There were so many that is was hard to keep them and their relationship to each other straight.  Once they started dying, I found I really didn't care.  The teens' dialogue was forced and unbelievable.  The author clearly has not spent time around teenagers lately. Oh, and did you know that Chelsea is Maddie's best friend?  Because just in case you didn't, Maddie will remind you about 6 millions times throughout the story.

I thought the reveal was going to go one way because there is some foreshadowing thrown out there a few times.  But the author decided to ignore that and go in a incompletely different direction.  While the one I was expecting is fairly cliche as well, I was almost disappointed I didn't get that ending.  I'll spare you any spoiler in case you decide you want to pick this one up.   But, I wouldn't recommend this one.

Blog Tour: Review of When the Lights Go Out by Mary Kubica

Author: Mary Kubica
Publisher: Park Row (Harlequin)
Date of publication:September 2018

Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.
Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred, her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.

Meanwhile, twenty years earlier and two hundred and fifty miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

I'm probably going to be in the minority when I say I didn't enjoy When the Lights Go Out. I didn't care for the only other book I read by this author, but I am always willing to give an author another try.   It wasn't a bad story, it just ended up being OK for me.  I was really disappointed with the ending because I'm not a fan of those types of endings. I'm obviously not going to give away the twist. It was just a big let down and I was hoping for something different.

The story waffles between Jessie's story and Eden's .  Out of the two, Eden's was the most interesting and engaging. Her struggle to start a family and the impact i had on her relationship was heartbreaking. Jessie's story was dull and a struggle to get through.  She was rather a boring and a flat character.  I found myself skimming through her parts.  I'll have to just chalk this one up to being not for me.

Review: The Yard by Alex Grecian

Author: Alex Grecian
Publisher: Putnam Books
Date of publication: May 2012

Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only twelve detectives—known as “The Murder Squad”—to investigate countless murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. But no one can anticipate the brutal murder of one of their own . . . one of the twelve . . .When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley. Together they track the killer, who clearly is not finished with The Murder Squad . . . but why?

Filled with fascinating period detail, and real historical figures, this spectacular debut in a new series showcases the depravity of late Victorian London, the advent of criminology, and introduces a stunning new cast of characters sure to appeal to fans of The Sherlockian and The Alienist.

The Yard is another book that I have had on my TBR for a long time.  After finishing, I'm sorry I waited so long to read the book.  It's the first in the Scotland Yard Murder Squad series.  The story takes place in Victorian London about a year after the Jack the Ripper murder case went unsolved.  Scotland Yard is working hard to put together a squad that will become top notch in solving murders.  They need to clean up their reputation after failing to catch The Ripper.  A fellow detective is found murdered and the squad is put to work to find the killer.

What I loved the most about this book was the characters.  I loved everyone of them and it was hard to pick a favorite.  While there are numerous detectives, the story focus on three of them: Walter Day (an inspector), Neville Hammersmith (a constable) and Bernard Kingsley (a doctor).  All too often, I feel like I read historical fiction like this but don't really get to know the characters or their motivations.  The author has taken care  of that here by including some 'interludes" with a peek into  each characters' past.  For instance, Hammersmith's interlude helps the reader to understand why he cares so much about solving the death of a young boy found dead in a chimney.  It really made me care about them.

There are three mysteries included in the book.  Although the reader finds out the solution to a couple of them way before the murder squad, it was still fun to watch them work without modern CSI techniques to figure things out.  I ended up listening to the audiobook.  The narrator's ability to make that many distinguishable voices is to be commended.

This is a series I definitely want to continue with and I already have The Black Country on hold at my library.  I highly recommend this one to lovers of good old fashioned mysteries.

Review: The Lost Causes by Alyssa Embree Schwartz & Jessica Koosed Etting

Author: Alyssa Embree Schwartz & Jessica Koosed Etting
Publisher: Kids Can Press
Date of publication: September 2017

They’re the last people you’d ask to help with anything, much less a murder investigation. The rich girl, the obsessive, the hypochondriac, the addict and the hot-tempered athlete—people think they’re beyond help. Lost causes. But where the world sees losers, the FBI sees its only hope.

With the help of a dangerous serum, the FBI erases the teens’ past problems and unlocks a psychic ability within each of them. In return, all they have to do is help find the killer who’s turned their small town upside down.

But as they close in on a suspect, they expose a conspiracy that puts them directly in harm’s way and makes them wonder who—if anyone—they can really trust.

If anything happens to them, will anyone even care?

In The Lost Causes, five high school students have been pretty much given up on by everyone around them.  They all are dealing with depression, OCD, addiction and other issues. They are recruited by two FBI agents to help out with a murder investigation by using abilities they didn't know they had.

I ended up enjoying this one.  The premise was pretty cool.  The five students are given a serum that unlocks latent psychic abilities.  They are able to use their new abilities to help solve a murder case.  The mystery was good and kept me guessing.  What I enjoyed the most was watching the five characters overcome their issues.  I liked them tremendously and really cared about what happened to them.  They were able to form a solid friend group.  If asked, I'm not sure I could pick a favorite out of the bunch.  The book ends in a way that would make room for a sequel.  If there is one in the future, I'll definitely pick it up.  This is a good fairly, clean YA and I would definitely recommend it.

Review: From Here to You by Jamie McGuire

Author: Jamie McGuire
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Date of publication: August 2018

As Darby Dixon sits in a tiny Texas church bathroom on her wedding day holding a positive pregnancy test, she realizes that of all the bad decisions she's made in her life, marrying her abusive fiancé would be the worst. She's never been able to stand up for herself, but she'll sure as hell stand up for her baby. With just the cash she has on hand, she runs to get a bus ticket to the farthest place she can afford. Between her sheer grit and pageant-queen smile, she lands a job as a front desk clerk at the Colorado Springs Hotel. It's not a glamorous life, but she and her baby are all that matters.

A former Marine, Scott "Trex" Trexler has worked in the most dangerous, corrupt, war-torn places on earth. Now he finally has a chance to return to the last place he'd felt at peace--Colorado Springs, Colorado, to take a new job with the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, a top-secret military installation buried deep within the granite.

The moment Trex walks into the inn, Darby knows he's dangerous. There's no way she wants to get involved with another man who seems to be keeping way too many secrets. As charming and devastatingly gorgeous as Trex is, he clearly isn't telling her everything. But as wildfires rage on the mountain and Darby's ex-fiancé shows he isn't so willing to let her go, both she and Trex are soon to find out that what you don't know absolutely can hurt you.

I had high hope for From Here to You.  It is the first in a new series and that is always fun to read.  Unfortunately, for me, this one didn't work very well.  The book opens with  Darby in the bathroom before her wedding confirming she is pregnant.  Her fiance is abusive and she knows she needs to flee for herself and her baby.  She ends up in Coloroda and gets a job as a hotel desk clerk.  Trex has been searching for "the one" his whole life.  One look at Darby and he knows she is it.  It's too bad Darby has sworn off relationships.

I had a few issues with the book.  The first being nothing happens for the majority of the book.  It was pretty boring.  It's only until the last quarter of the book that there is any real action.  The scenes in the secret military installation that Trex works at were repetitive and added nothing to the story.  Trex kept lying to Darby about completely unnecessary things.  He works at a top secret job.  All he had to tell her was his job was top secret and he was in security.  But he lies to her constantly.

The other big issue I had were the amount of characters who seem to be a part of the Maddox Brothers' series.  Seriously, if you are going to start a new series, don't put in a bunch of characters from another series and expect people not to be completely lost.  I didn't read the Maddox series other them Beautiful Disaster. So, I had no frame of reference for a bunch of the events that happen or that were mentioned  regarding the Maddox twin brothers.  It seems that part of this book took place during two of the Maddox brothers' books.  The whole thing was a mess and made the story feel disjointed and made me feel like I was missing a lot of back story.  There were chunks of the middle part of the book that could have been left out and the story would have been better for it.

All of that being said, I did like Darby and Trex as characters.  I had to admire Darby for her choice to run away.  I also loved Trex's jumping into playing the dad role with all he had.  I did like Trex's team.  They were characters I hope get explored in other books.  I'm just hoping that the story moves forward from this one and leaves the Maddoxs behind.

Tyler Garrett drove away without looking back. Truth is, he was afraid to even glance in the rear-view mirror for fear he would turn his big Ford extended-cab truck around. Of course, he was hauling a trailer with the finest quarter horse ever bred, so turning around on that two lane road might have given him a little trouble…but then, trouble was what he did best.
Ty was the middle son. The one who invented the word ‘trouble,’ at least, according to his dad. No one could deny that “Big Jim” Garrett thought the world of his three sons, but somehow it was always Ty who inspired him to call out, “Here comes trouble.”
Well, here goes trouble, Dad.
He reached the end of the farm-to-market road and idled, looking both ways for traffic, but of course, there was none. With a deep sigh, he hooked a wide right, allowing for the trailer to arc out behind him as he pulled onto the Interstate. He straightened his shoulders and thought about his destination.
Dallas.
Dallas, where Ty would take the first step in making his own dreams come true. Where he could polish his talent and live up to his mother’s aspirations for him as well.
He frowned, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. Too bad Mom didn’t live to see this day. She always believed in me.
A lump formed in his throat as he pictured her sweet face. She was the one who never failed to show up at the talent shows, looking pleased and applauding like crazy. Making her proud had been one of his prime motivators.
Big Jim, on the other hand, just shook his head and said, “That singin’ stuff is nice and all, but you need to concentrate on your true callin’, boy. You were born to be a rancher. It’s in your
blood.”
Ty sucked in a deep breath and blew it out. Well, he’d done what he could to make that happen. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Agricultural Economics and Range Management. He devoted years of his life to making his dad proud of him, but ranching just wasn’t in his heart.
His mother’s last words to him were branded into his memory. She had placed her hand on his cheek and gazed up with love in her eyes. “Follow your heart, Ty. Not many people are blessed with the talent the good Lord gave you, so you need to make the most of it.” She lapsed into a coma and passed away the following day.
Ty owed it to her to make it big. And Dallas was just the launching pad. His friend, Will, had a recording studio and was going to cut a demo for him. Then, Ty was set to try out for the Texas Country Star television show. If he made it through to the state finals, he would go on to compete in the Nashville Idol contest. He was pretty sure he had a good shot.
Ty’s departure was taking place a few days earlier than planned. Will had studio time available the beginning of the next week, but after the morning’s blow-up with Big Jim, Ty decided to head for Dallas and just hang around at Will’s.
He drove east, oblivious to the flat, north Texas countryside. His head was someplace else, but, without much effort, he filled the truck with his strong voice, singing one of his mother’s favorite gospel tunes.  He could see himself on stage, performing for the Nashville audience. For the world…
The town of Langston appeared on the horizon. He thought he should stop and grab lunch before the long drive to Big D. It was a fairly small town, so there weren’t many choices. He passed a Dairy Queen and Tio’s, a Mexican restaurant, before pulling in at Tiny’s Diner. He parked where he could keep an eye on his rig and climbed down out of his truck.
Funny to think he was really on his way. With all of his dad’s wealth, he had only taken what was important to him. His horse, his guitar and a few clothes. ‘Cause I’m sure not going back.
A metal cowbell clanked against the glass door when he entered the restaurant.
“Hello, Tyler,” Crystal called out. She was a fixture here at Tiny’s. “Table or booth?” She grabbed a menu and waited for his answer.
“Table near the front window would be best.” Removing his Stetson, he raked his hand through his thick, dark hair.
She walked him over to the window and placed the menu on a table for two. “Iced tea?”
“That’ll be good.” He set the Stetson on the other side of the table and took a seat facing the door. When it opened, he had to check out the new arrival.
Man!
His breath caught as his gaze fell on one of the prettiest women he had ever seen. She wasn’t exactly what one could call hot, but when she paused in the open doorway, he felt like he’d been kicked in the gut.
Her large, wide-set brown eyes reminded him of a fawn, or perhaps it was her blondish-brown curls, swept up in an untidy gob at the crown of her head. Definitely had the air of a skittish animal, not quite tame. Her threadbare jeans had a rip on one thigh and she wore a tank top with an over-sized blue work shirt on top. She swept the room carefully, as though alert for something, then turned back in the open doorway and motioned someone through.
A young girl stepped forward, pausing when the woman’s slender hand came to rest on her shoulder. The girl looked like a replica of the woman, with lighter blonde hair and a big cast on her forearm.

The kid had that same half-wild expression on her face, like she would turn and bolt from the restaurant if something spooked her.
