Blog Tour: The Goddaughter by Melodie Campbell

Author: Melodie Cambell
Publisher: Raven Books
Date of Publication: September 2012

Despite her best efforts to lead a law-abiding life, Gina Gallo cannot quite escape her mob family.  Since she’s a certified gemologist, Gina has become a key player in the family’s gem-smuggling operations.  Now she has met a great guy, a reporter named Pete, and she’ll do almost anything to keep him from discovering her shady side.  But when a gem delivery goes awry, Gina has to take Pete along for the ride.

The Goddaughter is a really quick read.  Coming in a 134 pages, it is perfect when you have a free afternoon and are in the mood for a comedy.  This book reminded me of the early Stephanie Plum books. You know when they were still funny? It's full of amusing situations and snarky comments.

I liked Gina and her "cunning plans".  Despite wanting to stay out of the "family" business, they keep sucking her into it.  I liked the chemistry between Pete and Gina.  I just wish there was more.  I didn't realize going into the book that this takes place in Canada.  I always associate the mob with New York or New Jersey, so that was a interesting twist.  I definitely recommend this book, it will leave you laughing and wanting more!

About the author:

Melodie Campbell has been a bank manager, marketing director, college instructor, comedy writer, and possibly the worst runway model ever.

Melodie got her start writing comedy (stand-up and columns).  In 1999, she opened the Canadian Humour Conference in Hamilton. She has over 200 publications, including 40 short stories, and has won 6 awards for short fiction.  Her third novel, The Goddaughter (Orca Books), is a comic mob caper. Melodie was a finalist for the 2012 Derringer Award (US) and Arthur Ellis Award (Can), and is the Executive Director of Crime Writers of Canada.

Melodie was invited into the Toronto Press Club in 1994.  There is no truth to the rumor that she once did a somersault off the Press Club billiard table.

Kari, thank you so much for featuring The Goddaughter, and for posting this review. I am delighted that you enjoyed the book!

And I'm thrilled to say that I signed the contract for the sequel, The Goddaughter's Revenge, last week! It will be released in Fall 2013. Gina and Pete will be back with another whacky caper-gone-wrong.
