Recent Books I Did Not Finish

 

This is Where We Die: This was super boring with unlikable characters. I am also kind of having rich teen fatigue. I know books aren't always realistic, but come on.  Can we have one YA where the teens have parents that are present and say no?.  I got half way and gave up.  

One Week: I only lasted about 2 chapters.  Both characters just gave me the ick.  I found it highly unbelievable and didn't think I could stomach these two characters for an entire book.

Meet Me at Midnight:  This book was so ridiculous.  I found nothing funny in this, not even the scenes that were supposed to be comical.  They were just cringy.  Also, this woman is an adult but acts like she is still 13.  I was done after the first chapter.

Down in the Hollow: I found this boring and confusing at the same time.  There were flashback scenes that weren't clearly defined so I kept getting confused as to what was going on.  I got like 50% in and it was obvious as to what was happening but the people int he town were too slow to realize.  I gave up at that point.

Books I've DNF'd Recently

I've been in such a reading slump lately. These recent DNFs may have something to do with it:

The Eye of the World:  I have heard a lot about this series, so I figured I would give it a try.  But  I think that this type of book just isn't my style.  There were too many characters to keep track of.  And it was so slow.  I 'll just admit defeat.

The No End House:  This isn't what I was expecting.  I thought it would be more  of like an escape room, but it wasn't.  It was definitely scarier than that.  However, i really didn't like either of the main characters so the horror aspect didn't save the book.  I found I didn't care what happened to them. I read a spoiler for the end and I'm glad I didn't waste my time.

Wicked Darlings:  I do usually like YA mysteries.  But I had to DNF this one early on.  I found the characters annoying.  It could be that I just wasn't in the mood for rich teenagers.  Maybe I'll try it again some other time.

Look For Me by Moonlight:  I was all in until a  30 YO looking man shows up and I had to read about a 16 YP girl fantasizing about him.  Then to find out he's a vampire drinking the blood of a 16YO girl.  Nope, I'm done.  Besides, what 16Yo wouldn't want to live in Italy for a while?  It would have been a much better adventure for her.

DNF's Books of October

Bunny:  This is definitely going to be a book that you either love, hate or just don't get.  I fall into the third category.  I DNF'd it at 30%  I had no idea what was going on.  It definitely wasn't for me.  I would say skip it.  Love is too short.

Dear Wife:  I found this one boring and stopped half way through.  The characters were flat and unlikable.  The one woman on the run did things that didn't make sense.  I just really didn't care to see any of the twists that I knew were coming.

All Eyes on Us: I definitely was not the target audience for this book.  None of the teens seemed like they were the age they claimed to be. They came across as older. None of them were likable.  Do YA readers really like books like this one? 

Echo after Echo: This story was really strange.  Again, it came down to unlikable characters. Also, I could not believe that any parent would let their 17YO go to Manhattan to star in a Broadway show and not go with them.  It just wasn't believable.  Also, the director was creepy.  It just didn't work for me.

Books I DNF'd - August Edition

Someone Knows:  I DNF'd this one at about 20%  There were too many characters.  All of whom were horrible people.  There was too much family drama and I just couldn't keep up any interest in the story.

You Will Pay:  I got about 50% of the way through the book and gave up.  Literally, nothing happened.  It was  halfway through the book and the characters were still not back into the town they had been asked to go back to after the bones on the beach were found.  It waffled between past and present in multiple perspectives. It was confusing whose perspective I was getting.   I wanted to love this one, but I couldn't take it any more.

We Went to the Woods:  The synopsis was intriguing but sadly, the story didn't live up to it..  I ended up giving up about 20% in.  The characters were so unlikable and pretentious.  I was so bored with them.  I think that if I went into the woods with these characters, I would waste away from boredom. 

The Burglar:  I never thought a book about a burglar could be so slow and boring.  That is until I picked up this book.  I gave up at 25%.  The main character was one of the dullest burglars I have ever read about.  She also had a bunch of TSTL moments.  I just couldn't connect with her or care about what happened to her.

Book I Didn't Finish in July

Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Happiness:  I didn't make it past the first chapter of this book.  I had a huge issues with how the main character and his friends kept talking about the heroine.  When the hero referred to her lipstick as "Crimson Slut"  I was done.

The Wanderers:  I loved the synopsis and was so looking forward to loving this book.  It seemed like it would be an epic tale like The Stand.  I got about 20% in and realized it wasn't for me.  I was bored.  I was also not a fan of being able to tell which way the author leans politically.   That turned me off.

Sweet Pea:  I really wanted to love this book, but I really disliked the main character.  I can like a book with an unlikable main character, but she was over the top.  I didn't find any of this book funny.  Maybe I just don't have that type of sense of humor?

Celine: I really thought I would like this book based on the synopsis.  However, I was really bored.  The book kept going back to the main character's past and childhood.  I couldn't understand why it was pertinent to the story.  It just felt like an unnecessary info dump.

Books I DNF'd in May

Inspection:  I think it is time to sever ties with Josh Malerman.  I absolutely loved Bird Box.  But I have had a hard time connecting with anything else that he has written since.  I was so disappointed with Inspection. I gave it about 100 pages, then gave up.  It was confusing, boring and just not a good premise.  Skip this one. It's not good.

My Lovely Wife:  I tried with this one.  But I was so bored. For a couple of serial killers, they lived very dull lives.  There was too much time spent in the past.  It just wasn't for me.  I know other people loved this one, but it wasn't for me.

Mine:  I was all in with this one until the girlfriend showed up.  Then it just went off the rails for me.  I thought this book would go in a different direction.  I couldn't get behind what the main character chose to do, so I gave up.

The Ghost Bride:  I found this book confusing. It was over written and too flowery. The whole ghost bride thing was weird and not what I was expecting.  I made it to the part where the main character entered the ghost realm, then I couldn't listen any more.  Definitely not for me.

Breed:  This book was just wrong and disturbing.  I love horror, but this just was too gross and over the top for me.  I lasted about 50% of the way through and I couldn't take it any more. 

The Last:  I am pretty picky about what type of post-apocalyptic books I read.  I do like survival stories and watching a group of people try to make it after a major world event.  However, I don't like reading about people within that group continually taking their lives.  While I'm sure it would happen in real life out of despair, I don't want it in my fiction.

Books I Didn't Finish - March Edition

Three Blind Dates:  I was on the fence about whether or not I wanted to finish this one.  The premise was cute, but by the end of the first date I just didn't care any more.  Noley was just too over the top awkward.  I had a hard time picturing her as a morning talk show host.  After the scene where she gives herself a home perm, I gave up.  No one does that any more, especially someone who has to be on TV every day.  It was a bit too far-fetched to be believable.

Duchess by Design:  I tried to get into this one, but I gave up fairly early on.    It was almost a bit too insta-lovely for me. I wasn't into the potential angst. I didn't care about either of the characters. I also didn't like the setting. I might have liked it more had it taken place in England.

The Kiss Quotient:  This book is being hyped all over the place.  I'm not sure why.  I barely made it past the first 15% of the audiobook.  I thought this would be a cute romance, but it was't  I found myself very uncomfortable with the premise of the main character hiring a man to teach her about sex.  I understand she has aspergers, but it just wasn't realistic.  I also wasn't a fan of the hero feeling he had to do this type of work to make money.  I'm sure the reason shows up later in the book.  I just didn't care to wait it out.

The Suspect: I really enjoyed the first two book in this series.  I was sad when I decided to DNF this one.  I got about 20% of the way in and I was so bored.  I just didn't care about the characters. There were too many perspectives,  I found myself re-reading passages.  It wasn't as tidy and well put together as the others. 

Books I Didn't Finsish - December edition

Sawkill Girls:  I have seen a lot of rave reviews for this book.  So, I'm clearly in the minority.  I found it confusing and boring at the same time.  There is a big reveal in the beginning of the book that took away some of the mystery.  I didn't like any of the characters.  I gave up about 30% in.

Broken Girls:  I gave up fairly early on with this book.  I tried to read it a few times.  But I never made it past chapter 7.  I was bored.  I didn't like the dual time lines.  The characters were forgettable.  There was a distinct lack of supernatural element.  I wanted a good ghost story, but I wasn't going to get it here.

Strange Grace:  As I was reading this, I felt like I was reading a boring version of The Village.  The world building was really bad  At first, I thought the beginning was a prologue about something that happened years before.  But, no.  It was the whole story.  I quit at about 20%.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time:  I only made it to the third chapter in this one.  There was little chemistry between the two main characters.  I wasn't a fan of the age difference.  He kept calling her "kid" in the beginning and that made me cringe.  I just knew this one wouldn't be for me.

Books I Didn't Finish November Edition

Hex:  I made it to about 50% and just gave up.  There was just so much wrong with this story that it is hard to pinpoint why I couldn't continue.  I was bored, didn't care about any of the characters.  All of them are pretty horrible.  I never thought I would feel sympathy for a ghost that has cursed an entire town.  There were no smooth transitions between characters POVs.  I was often confused. Skip this one.  It's not good.

Accidental Tryst:  I had a feeling about 1 % in that I wasn't going to like this book.  The hero, Trystan, after seeing the heroine, Emmy who he assumes is a hippie type, he mulls over using an app to find someone to hook up with in the airport.  Gross.  But what really made me abandon the book was when it is implied that Emmy willingly flashed her chest for a 15 YO in exchange for him unlocking Trystan's phone.  Double gross. I abandoned it soon after that scene.

Kiss and Tell (Veronica Mars 2):  I loved the TV show and really enjoyed the first book.  But when I tried to read this sequel, I gave up pretty early on.  I was not a fan of the change from first person POV  in the first book to third person in this book.  One of the great things about the TV show and the first book was having the story narrated by Veronica herself.  Having it now be a story about her and not through her voice was strange and it didn't work for me.

Elevation:  I think I am officially done with Stephen King.  I am a huge fan of his early works, but his later books have completely missed the mark with me.  I know this is a short novella, but by about 15% in I was bored and ready to move on.

Books I Didn't Finish - October Edition

The Disappearances: I found this book incredibly boring.  I got about halfway and gave up.  The "disappearances" made no sense.  I didn't understand the variants magic.  I didn't like any of the characters.  I wouldn't recommend it.

House: I didn't care fore this one.  I tried to hang in with the book, but it was just too crazy.  I DNF'd at 50%. I disliked the characters.  The story made no sense.  It was crude and a bit too violent to me. Another one I wouldn't recommend. 

Wicked and Wallflower: I think I am going to have to admit defeat with this author.  This is the third book I have DNF'd by her lately.  This one was not fun.  The heroine kept throwing herself at the hero.  The bet against his brother made no sense to me.  Felicity's family was horrible.  And for a women who doesn't want to bring scandal to he family, she keep sneaking out.  I gave up after I heard Devil call he Felicity Faircloth for the 200th time.  That got really old.
