While the wolf escapes, Shelby can’t seem to get away from her troubles when a marijuana grower sets up shop on her land, sabotaging her property and eventually coming after her. Adding to that, a handsome game warden is poking his nose into her business and working his way underneath her skin. Shelby will have to fight harder than she ever fought before to keep from losing her heart and everything she ever loved.




 Hunter Moon is an enjoyable story.  The one thing I did  love about it were the characters!  Shelby is one tough lady.  I loved that she was strong, independent and wasn't afraid to face danger.  She also was willing to fight for what was hers.  Cash was a great match for Shelby.Their chemistry was sizzling, if not a bit frustrating.  But, I did like that they didn't jump in the sack after the first kiss.  The peripheral characters rounded out the book nicely.  


While I did enjoy the book overall, I felt like the first half of the book dragged a bit. It didn't really get going until halfway through the book.  Then, it sucked me right in.  For me, the book started out to as a romantic suspense, then changed over into a paranormal romance.   I wish that the paranormal aspect of the book had come in a lot sooner than it did.  I think the book would have flowed better for me that way.   Be warned, this book ends in a huge cliffhanger.  At first, I thought I was missing part of the book.  As you know, I'm not a fan of cliffhangers.  I can only hope that the next installment comes out soon because I HAVE to know what happens next!  

I do recommend giving Hunter Moon a shot.  I look forward to reading more from Ms. Lavender.

Mellow Summers just wanted to go to college and get her film degree. She moved into a furnished apartment with her friend Jackie only to find that it already had a tenant: the ghost of a girl who was murdered a year earlier. Now it is up to Mellow to not only discover who the murderer is, but to prove it as well.

With the help of the ghost Rachel, Mellow sets out to solve the year old mystery. She soon finds out that she may have taken on more than she can handle. Pursued by someone who wants the identity of the killer to remain a secret, Mellow will have to use all her resources to outwit him and help the spirit of Rachel move on. 


My Take:   Sugar and Spice and Not So Nice is a pretty quick read.  It was a cute and, at times, funny mystery.  Mellow Summers heads to Vermont for college.  What she didn't expect was getting a mystery and a ghost as well.  Rachel was murdered a year before and she wants Mellow to help her figure out what happened.  After agreeing to help, Mellow finds herself in some sticky situations.  She also acquires some unique friends, like an entire biker gang!  I enjoyed this mystery as it was a lot of fun to read.  My only problem with it was that Mellow is 26, yet at times, she acted more like a typical college student of 18 or 19.  Not a big deal, but it did bother me.  If you are looking for a fun read, pick this one up!

Janet was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

Kari :What inspired you to become a writer?

Janet: I had a friend in high schools who loved to write and some  his passions rubbed off on me.  Back then I wrote a few short stories and poems, none of which I published.  But at the same time I began writing a novel which I worked on for ten years.  Writing started out as a hobby, but now it is time to turn it into a way of life.

Kari: Where do you come up with the idea for your books?

Janet:I was watching Ghost Whisperer  one night and reading a mystery novel an thought, why not have a book where a ghost helps solves a mystery.  I’ve always liked a good ghost story and a good mystery so I figured I’d put both into one book.  The title Sugar And Spice And Not So Nice I had bouncing around my head for quite a while before I penned the first sentence.   My goal was to make this a fun but entertaining read, and that is why I wrote this book.

Kari: What exciting projects are waiting in the wings?

Janet: I plan to write a sequel to Sugar And Spice And Not So Nice.  I probably won’t be released until later this year.  Currently, I am working on the second novel in my fantasy trilogy Legends Lost.  I plan to have that one completed before the end of this coming summer.  After I am finished with it, I will write the sequel to Sugar and Spice.

Kari:  Who is your favorite literary character and why?

Janet:That is a tough one.  There are three that I will have to list here.

Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings: Sam is the epitome of a loyal friend.  Through all of the dangers that he and Frodo face in their quest to destroy the One Ring, Sam never leaves Frodo’s side.  Not once does he consider turning back and leaving Frodo.  Instead he remains by Frodo’s side even after Frodo turns against him and allows Gollum to poison his mind.  While in Mordor near the end of their journey, Sam literally carries Frodo up Mount Doom to ensure that he succeeds in his mission.  One of the things that really brings Sam to life is at the very end of the story when Frodo decides to keep the One Ring.  Not once does Sam consider telling the others about Frodo’s betrayal.  Instead, he keeps is a secret and forgives Frodo for his moment of weakness.

Severus Snape from Harry Potter: Everyone loves Harry and his friends, or even Voldemort.  But I think Snape is often overlooked.  His cold manner through most of the series is a bit off putting, but there is something about his character that makes you feel sympathy for him.  Snape is one of those courageous people that literally sacrifices everything to bring down the stories villain.  He puts his life in constant danger spying on Voldemort while at he same time pretending to be Voldemort’s loyal servant.  But one of the things that really makes me sympathize for Snape is the fact that he was never able to make up with Lilly before she died.  Through immaturity and an act of selfishness, he pushed away the only woman he ever loved. Even after Lily married his arch-rival, he never stopped loving her.  After her death, he spend the reminder of his life protecting her son.  Severus Snape is the a man who lost everything he ever loved because of a selfish desire to be great.  Afterwards, he spends the remainder of his life trying to atone for his sins.

Marvin from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy:  What is not to love about a clinically depressed robot?   Marvin is a new model robot that is supposed to be able to relate with people.  The problem is he suffers from depression and usually comes across as a downer.  His poor me attitude brings a certain amount of dark humor to wild ride through the galaxy.

Kari :Just for fun, if you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

Janet: I’d be a cat.  I’ve always loved cats and have three of them.  I find them fascinating.  They are highly intelligent and have a way of getting people to do their bidding.  I also find their ability to sneak up on you without making one sound to be intriguing.

Blog Tour: Finding Alice by Andrea Digilio

Alice works at a hole-in-the-wall bar in the middle of nowhere mostly keeping to herself to avoid the overwhelming emotions of those around her. Alice allows her best friend to convince her into taking a few college classes without realizing it would drastically change her life forever. From her first day of class she was hooked on him; his scent, his eyes, the way he talked to her inside her head.


Throughout her struggles she learns about true love, true pain and the truth of her own heritage. Alice must quickly find out who she is because after all everyone else is out to find her. With Angels and Bounty Hunter’s in constant pursuit she finds protection within a group of Fallen Angels. These Fallen Angels vow to do anything to protect her; for it is their belief she will save their kind and all of mankind.

Finding Alice was a pretty good quick read.  I liked Alice's character a lot.  She is pretty strong for someone who has not had a lot of love in her life.  She is more mature than her age. I had to give her a lot of credit for striking out on her own and finding a place to call home.  Even if it is called Hell. I did like her relationship with Cole. He is the one person who can help her figure out who she really is and perhaps help her figure out why feathers keep showing up near her.

While I enjoyed the overall story, I felt a little like I was missing some things in the beginning.  I never felt like the author gave a good enough explanation of Alice's gift of empathy.  If I hadn't read the synopsis, I'm not sure I would have picked up on that.  Also, I would have liked more information about the world that Alice finds herself a part of. I'm hoping that the author expands more on it in future books.

I do recommend this one, especially if you like stories about angels. It is a good debut novel. I look forward to reading more about Alice in her fight for her fellow Fallen Angels.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book.  I was pleasantly surprised.  Immortalis: Carpe Noctem is a fresh take on the vampire genre.  I think this is the first story that I have read in a while where the vampires actually kill their prey to feed.  Changed without her permission, Alyssa must leave her old life and adapt to becoming a creature of the night.  Not only does she have to adjust to a whole new way of living, she must wary of people who are trying to kill her for what she has become.  I really felt for Alyssa as she learns to become a vampire.  The only thing that bothered me about the story was the relationship between Alyssa and Lysander.  I didn't really feel their connection. Despite that, I look forward to following their relationship in future books.  

I had planned on reading all 3 books in this series before the tour date, but sadly real life had other plans for me.  I do plan to read plan to read books 2 and 3 in the near future and I hope you will as well.

Blog Tour: What are You Afraid of? by Kiki Howell

Along with YA and adult fiction, I do read a fair amount of children's books.  Why?  Because I have 2 children, of course.  Books are a wonderful way of conveying information and solutions to problems to small children.  What Are you Afraid Of? is a great books for kids who have fears.  All children have fears at one time or another.  I read through it first and while I really enjoyed it, I decided to put it to the "kid" test.  My kids really enjoyed it.  The photos of the dogs were amusing and  added great visual aids.  They loved the idea of the game that Zoe teaches Drake. I definitely recommend this book to any parents with children.  

About the author:

Ever since she was young, Kiki Howell has loved to listen to a well-woven tale with real characters, inspired plots, and delightful resolutions. Kiki could spend hours lost in a book, and soon she knew that creating lives, loves, and losses with just words had to be the greatest thing that she could do. To that end, she pursued her study of literature and writing, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. She then followed in a Master’s program in Creative Writing.

“After a long break having my boys, I finally just had to write again. And, as soon as I gave the stories the space, they entered it. It’s both awesome and humbling to find the words in my mind become characters on a page and create their lives.”

My latest book, The Mancode: Exposed, focuses specifically on the goofy stuff guys do and how we chicks react, scratch our heads, and wonder where we placed the guys we originally hooked up with way back when – ya know, the ones who didn’t burp, fart, and then expect sex all within the span of a minute.
 

Like that.
 

One topic that has always amused me is the temperature differences between the sexes. I don’t know about you, but in my family the shemales are always cold, the hewolves  always hot.
 

(The above is not a euphemism for sex. If you know me at all, you’ll know when I’m talking about sex. Cause I title my essays things like “The Penis. Deconstructed.”)
 

It can be forty degrees out and my husband will have the car window down with his head out the window, kind of like well, a dog for lack of a better word; while my daughter and I shiver away, teeth chattering. Not that he notices. He’s too busy barking at other cars.
 

It’s not just the guys though. My mom will play with the temperature gauges like a scientist conducting an experiment from the second she enters ANY car, twisting and turning the knobs like a professional. My dad and her friends are all apparently used to her OCD foible, but not having lived in the same town for many years, I’d forgotten to warn my guy when he first met her of how oh, clinically insane she is (love you, mommy) when it came to her need to control Mother Earth and all its inhabitants.
 

See, women are crazy squirrelnuts, too.
 

Husband and I play window musical chairs – I’ll be wrapped up shivering in a blanket with my ice-cold fingers warming around a steaming mug of coffee and he’ll burst into the room with “Why’s it so hot in here?” and proceed to open every window in the room. Not to be rude or inconsiderate – I used to think that of course; but after nineteen years of marriage, it’s now my theory that testosterone makes men ovens and estrogen makes women icicles.
 

It’s why we warm our arctic feet on you.

The deadly chase leads cross-country to a top-secret military facility in Virginia, where Rage and Larry uncover the greatest danger of all -- and only they can stop the unthinkable from happening.


Code of Darkness is an exciting, tense and non-stop adventure.  I don't normally like straight action books, but I really enjoyed this one!  The entire time I was reading it, I kept thinking this would make a great movie. I could even picture how the scenes would play out.  The plot was well written and well thought out. 


The characters were well written.  Rage has special abilities and struggles with the question of using them or not.  In seeking justice for the helpless, he becomes a vigilante.  His actions bring him into the cross hairs of the police as well as a Black Ops team.  What interest does the military have in him and what is going on inside the secret research facility?  You will have to read to find out.  I hate to give away too much of the plot because it would really spoil it.  I never would have guessed the secret behind who Rage is and how he came to be.  I had a dozen scenarios in my mind, but I didn't even come close.  


I definitely recommend Code of Darkness.  I sorry when it ended.  This is the debut novel for Mr. Lindberg.  I see a bright future ahead of him and look forward to his next book!

About the Author:

Chris Lindberg was born and raised outside Chicago, Illinois.  After graduating from Northern Illinois University in the mid-1990s, he headed out to the west coast for a couple of years, where he began writing as a casual pastime.  

Some time after returning to Chicago he began attending writers workshops at StoryStudio Chicago, where he wrote two character studies, both of which have since been developed into key characters in Code of Darkness.  

Chris now lives outside Chicago with his wife Jenny and their two children, Luke and Emma.  You might catch him working away on his second novel while commuting on his morning train into the city.

I have never read anything by Stacey Kennedy, but after reading this novella, I will be seeking out her other offerings.  I really enjoyed Whatnots and Doodads.  This little story has a lot packed into it: sexy supernatural beings, hot steamy loves scenes and laugh out loud humor. Strange Hollow is a place I would love to visit.  What would be better than a place with misfit supernatural beings, where you are not judged and can be yourself?  The chemistry between Zeke and Bryanna leaps off the pages and grabs hold.  Ms. Kennedy's erotic scenes are well written and tastefully done.  My only complaint is that I wanted more!  I hope that Ms. Kennedy will do more stories about Strange Hollow.  With a town full of misfits, there have to be dozens of stories waiting to be told!

I definitely recommend this one.  I think any lover of erotica will like this novella. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Kennedy in the future!

Keara Crosby's life changes t when her parents are killed in an airplane crash.  Her weird aunt comes to live with her and she constantly has the feeling that someone is following her.  When she starts to fall for a mysterious guy and is attacked in the parking lot, she finds out that monsters do exist.  Keara and Channing are great together and their chemistry heats up the pages.  The peripheral characters round out the story nicely. My favorite was the best friend, Jared and Buddha, the drummer.  He sounds gorgeous! I also loved her use of twin vampires for good vs. evil.

Night Secrets is well written and engaging.  It was a very quick read and I was able to finish it in an afternoon.  The world that Ms. Walker has created is intriguing and I want to know more about it.  My only complaint about the book is that I wanted more.  It was too short for me and ends in a cliffhanger.  I look forward to the next one and to learning more about the Night Secrets world.

I had high hopes for Promise after reading the forward by the author.  The version I read was re-released with better editing and new content.  In other words, it as written the way she had originally intended it to be presented.  I wasn't disappointed.  Promise is a beautifully and well written love story. 

Alexis has known she was different all her life.  She can heal any wound that she gets almost immediately. Her mother never seems to age. And on top of that, she is constantly moving.  She longs for a normal life. Instead, it seems someone wants to kill her and her mother is not telling her things she needs to know.  She meets Tristan in a college class and the connection runs deeply almost instantly.  I really enjoyed watching Tristan and Alexis get to know each other.  They became friends first which I think made their love more believable.

Ms. Cook has created a unique world which revolves around the Amadis and the Daemoni.  I look froward to learning more about both sides and how they came to be.  One thing that did bother me about the book was the people around Alexis kept only giving her part of the story.  This got to be frustrating for me after a while.  But then, I have no patience and had to remind myself to trust in the author. Promise ends in an emotional cliffhanger, so you might want to have the second book, Purpose, ready to read.  I know I have it loaded on my Kindle ready to go.

I definitely recommend Promise!  I know that Ms. Cook has a promising future as a writer.  I look forward to seeing what comes next.
