It's a city of beauty, history…hauntings. And one of the most haunted places in Savannah is a tavern called The Dragonslayer, built in the 1750s. The current owner, Gus Anderson, is a descendant of the original innkeeper and his pirate brother, Blue.
Gus summons his granddaughter, Abigail, home from Virginia, where she's studying at the FBI Academy. When she arrives, she's devastated to find him dead. Murdered. But Abby soon learns that Gus isn't the only one to meet a brutal and untimely end; there've been at least two other victims. Then Captain Blue Anderson starts making ghostly appearances, and the FBI's paranormal investigation unit, the Krewe of Hunters, sends in Agent Malachi Gordon.
The Night is Alive is the 10th book in the Krewe of Hunters series. Overall, I have really enjoyed this series. There have been a couple of stories that have a little underwhelming, but this one, thankfully, was not. I really enjoyed the story.
The mystery was really solid with a number of suspects. It definitely kept me guessing as to the identity of the killer. It really wasn't until the killer was just about to be revealed that I was pretty sure who it was and I love that in a book. I also enjoyed the pirate theme. Who doesn't like a story with a lots of pirates and intrigue?
I think that Malachi is one of my favorite characters in this series. He's kind of a smart-alec and he made me laugh. His attraction to Abby was pretty quick, but it felt right. The one thing I would have loved to see was the two ghosts meet in the end. Another great addition to the series. I'm looking forward to reading The Night is Forever soon!

Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann
by: Lisa McMann
published by: Simon Pulse
publish date: February 15, 2011
Kendall Fletcher had big problems even before her two high school classmates went missing. Her intrusive OCD put her at loose ends, constantly searching for lost threads. The Cryer's Cross freshman was shaken by the disappearance of the first student, but she was totally thunderstruck when her close friend vanished. With her mind already in overdrive, she attempts to put together the pieces of crimes that stump even the police.
Cryer's Cross was one of those just sort of average, middle-of the road, YA mysteries. It had the flawed main character that gets stuck in a weird love triangle. It had the little bit of paranormal element to make it a bit on the strange side.
Kendall is living is a really tiny town. The entire high school seems to all fit in one classroom. When one goes missing they are all devastated. However, when a second student goes missing it makes the national news. Is there a serial kidnapper out there? Were the students in on it together? The second student to go missing is Nico, Kendall's boyfriend, and her OCD mind starts making connections that no one else would be able to.
Like I said, it was ok. The answer to the mystery was a little weird and honestly didn't make much sense to me, but up until that point, I thought the book was fairly good. There was a lot time spent on the fact that the only reason Kendall was with Nico was because they grew up together and there weren't too many other options, and that's kind of sad. It paved the way for the love triangle though. So I guess bottom line, eh so-so, would have been better with a more realistic ending in my opinion.

My thoughts:
The Cowboy's Mail Order Bride was a really fun book to read. Emily goes to Greg's ranch to deliver some letters to his grandmother. She is fulfilling her grandfather's dying wish. She only planned on being there for one day. What she didn't plan on was finding love and a home. I loved watching Emily and Greg fall for each other. More than their story, though, I loved all of the other characters in the book. Clarice, Dottie, Rose and Madge added a lot of comic relief to the book. Their plan for finding Greg a wife was too funny! This is the third book in the series and for me it was the best. Each of them can be read as a stand alone, so you could start with this one.

She's Got Sass...
Emily Cooper promised her dying grandfather that she'd
deliver a long-lost letter to a woman he once planned to wed. Little does
adventurous Emily know that this simple task will propel her to places she
never could have imagined...with a cowboy who's straight out of her dreams...
He's Got Mail...
When sexy rancher Greg Adams discovers his grandmother
Clarice has installed Emily on their ranch as her assistant, he decides to
humor the two ladies. He figures Emily will move on soon enough. In the
meantime, he intends to keep a close eye on her—he doesn't quite buy her story
of his grandmother as a mail-order bride.

Kari& Autumn: What inspired you to become a writer?
Carolyn: Good
morning, Kari and Autumn. Thank you so much for inviting me to stop by your
site. It’s delightful to me here and to visit with y’all. Can you believe it’s
almost Valentine’s Day? Emily and Lucas have quite a mix-up about the
Valentine’s Day party in The Cowboy’s Mail Order Bride, but like all
misunderstandings, it does get worked out and oh, my, what a lovely evening!
But enough, you said something about asking questions…
Now
for the question: Reading! When I figured out what those squiggly lines were in
the books, I wanted to tell stories like they did. When I didn’t have a book to
read, I made one up in my head and entertained my brother and sister with the
story.
Kari& Autumn: Where do you come up with the ideas for your books?
Carolyn: Anything can inspire a book. A couple talking
across a barbed wire fence, evidently both very upset about something. A news
item about a family who was still feuding after years and years brought on the
Burnt Boot Series. One of my author
friends sending a joke inspired a trilogy about three sisters and a murdered
abusive husband. Wondering what path my own life might have taken if my
proposal and engagement ring (which came via snail mail more than 40 years ago)
had gotten lost along the way. That last one is the inspiration for The Cowboy’s Mail Order Bride.
Kari& Autumn: What exciting projects are waiting in the wings?
Carolyn: The Red
Hot Chili Cook-off, the second book in the women’s fiction trilogy set in Cadillac , Texas ,
will hit the shelves. After that the final book in Cowboy’s and Brides, How to Marry a Cowboy, is scheduled for
July. Then in August, there’s a debut book in the Red Dirt Series, Long Hot Texas Summer. And in October,
the Burnt Boot Series kicks off with Cowboy
Boots for Christmas (Cowboy Not Included). After that there’s another
women’s fiction in the works and lots more cowboys!
Kari& Autumn: Who is your favorite literary character and why?
Carolyn: Katy Scarlett O’Hara because she was made of
pure sass and grit.
Kari& Autumn: Just for fun, if you could be any animal, what would
it be and why?
Carolyn: A cat. They are independent, sassy, determined
and loveable. They find a nice cuddly blanket and sleep away the hours without
feeling guilty about it and folks don’t look at them like they’ve lost their
minds when they play…no matter how old they are!

Throwback Thursday: The Welcoming by Nora Roberts

Author: Nora Roberts
First published in 1989 by Silhouette
He came to the seaside inn with only the clothes on his back and a loaded .38 revolver. His orders: expose a criminal organization based at the quaint vacation hideaway. It was just another assignment for Roman DeWinter. Routing, simple, uncomplicated. He didn't expect to fall for his key suspect, innkeeper Charity Ford.
Charity knew Roman was different. His gaze smoldered with angry passion, arousing a dangerous fascination. His mere presence made her most forbidden desires come alive. Still, Charity knew so little about him, and it put her on edge. Was this stranger a threat to her happiness. . . or the man she'd been waiting a lifetime to welcome?
Roman is an undercover FBI agent who is doing one last assignment and then he is getting out. He is fed up and wants something more for his life. He doesn't count on falling hard and fast for the number one suspect, Charity Ford. I thought the mystery part of the book was pretty good. The action in the end was filled with tension. What I wasn't so sold on was the romance.
The problem? I didn't care much for Charity. She was a little too goody-goody and naive. I thought her declaration of love after 2 kisses and a dance was a bit much. Their whole relationship just felt so rushed. While their HEA moment was cute, I think I would have been more convinced had the book been a bit longer. I think any fan of Ms. Roberts will want to read this one. Just don't expect too much.

A
sweeping novel of romance and South African history that has been compared to Gone
with the Wind, The Thorn Birds, and Out of Africa, THE FEVER TREE is an epic, heart
wrenching tale not to be missed.
Let me start by saying that The Fever Tree is a beautifully written book. The way the author describes the African landscape was wonderful. I did feel like I was a part of the story. She also does a wonderful job of giving us a glimpse into life at the time and the struggles the people went through trying to make it.
Having said that, I didn't like the book as much as I was hoping I would. In a way, I was a little bored and I found myself putting the book down a lot. I ended up skimming parts of the book that dragged. I had a hard time connection with the characters. I didn't like either of the men involved in the "love triangle". In my opinion neither of them was honest with Frances and neither really deserved her. While she did make some incredibly dumb moves, I kind of felt bad for her and her situation. I think it is unfair to ask a woman who is used to money and privilege to all of a sudden give that up with no prior warning.
I do think that the book is one that every reader should try for themselves. I have seen some great reviews, so I encourage others to give it a try. It just wasn't for me.

Jennifer McVeigh, who has herself traveled to remote
areas of Southern and East Africa, also drew on firsthand accounts of life in
colonial South Africa, as well as nineteenth century guidebooks and women’s
magazines, in order to infuse Frances Irvine’s experiences with arresting
verisimilitude. You can find her on the

Can a battle-scarred warrior . . .
Stay sober. Get deployed. Lead his platoon. Those are the only things that matter to Sergeant First Class Reza Iaconelli. What he wants is for everyone to stay out of his way; what he gets is Captain Emily Lindberg telling him how to deal with his men. Fort Hood's newest shrink is smart as a whip and sexy as hell. She's also full of questions-about the army, its soldiers, and the agony etched on Reza's body and soul.
. . . open his heart to love?
Emily has devoted her life to giving soldiers the care they need-and deserve. Little does she know that means facing down the fierce wall of muscle that is Sergeant Iaconelli like it's just another day at the office. When Reza agrees to help her understand what makes a soldier tick, she's thrilled. Too bad it doesn't help her unravel the sexy warrior in front of her who stokes her desire and touches a part of her she thought long dead. He's the man who thinks combat is the only escape from the demons that haunt him. The man who needs her most of all . . .

My thoughts:
All for You was such a good book. I really loved it. It was also a difficult book to read because of the subject matter. Alcoholism and suicide never make for light reading material. The story centers around Reza and Emily. Reza, who we met back in Until There was You, is an alcoholic who is trying to stay sober on his own. The stress of his job and learning how to be back home is making it difficult. Emily is relatively new to the Army and has never seen combat. She is trying to really reach out to the soldiers who need her help. She looks to Reza to try to help her understand what the soldiers are going through. I loved these two together. For me, Reza is the most changed out of all of the men in this series. Events in the book make him take a hard look at his life and his attitude. I was really rooting for him to make the right choice in the end.
The story is a realistic look at what is happening to our military when they come back. War changes people. Addiction is a reality that really can't be ignored. I was appalled at the attitudes of the higher ranking officers and NCOs toward those who sought treatment and help with their problems. While this is fiction, I'm sure that it carries over into real life. The book really made me think about what we are asking our young men and women to do for our freedom. Doesn't freedom always come at a price? If anything, I know I am starting to have a better appreciation for what they sacrifice so that I can be safe and free. I applaud the author for not sugarcoating the issues and for giving it to us straight!
If you haven't yet read any of these books, I urge you to give them a try. They all can be read as stand alone books, but why not start with Because of You? You won't be sorry.
Enjoy this excerpt from All for You:
Emily watched her friend weave through the crowd of
broad-shouldered Cavalrymen and toward the captain. Alone at the bar, Emily
twirled her wine in the glass, staring into the swirling pale golden liquid.
She sipped her wine and glanced around the wide open space,
feeling the warmth. She was comfortable in this place. A drink after work. A
good friend. This was a good life. It was simple. It had purpose. So much
better than the complicated mess she’d left behind.
She lifted
her glass, savoring the freedom of her rebellion. She might not fit into her
uniform just right but she fit here among these soldiers better than she’d ever
fit back home.
She saw
Olivia gyrating slowly with the captain across the dance floor. Her friend’s movements
were slow and sensual, a sultry undulation that spoke of power and of sex. She
smiled at her friend’s pleasure. It was enough that Emily could enjoy another’s
happiness. She’d come here tonight to relax, to help Olivia celebrate.
“You don’t
come here often, do you?”
Emily glanced
at the man who’d appeared at her shoulder. He’d been standing with the group of
captains that Olivia had just infiltrated.
“Not really,”
she said, sipping her drink. She thought about easing away, putting space
between where their upper arms touched.
Personal
space much? she thought.
“Are you here
with friends?” he asked. She caught a heavy scent of beer from his direction,
beer mixed with cigar smoke. It was not unpleasant.
She glanced over at Olivia. “Yeah.”
“Not up for
company?”
She smiled
and finally glanced back at him. “Not really. Thank you though.”
He brushed
the tip of his hat with two fingers. “My pleasure, ma’am.”
He swaggered
off, leaving her alone at the bar. That had been nice. Too bad she wasn’t
interested. Once upon a time, she might have danced but there was something
missing from the way he’d carried himself.
He was
missing that power that Sergeant Iaconelli wore like it was second nature.
She shook her
head and took a long sip of her wine. She’d done nothing but argue with the man
but now she was thinking about him in a way that was purely unprofessional.
The heavy
iron door swung open at that moment and Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
“Speak of the
devil,” she muttered.
Reza
Iaconelli stood in the doorway, his gaze scanning the room as though he was
taking a headcount. What was it about the man that he was always walking through
doors at the wrong time? And this time, his gaze swept the bar and landed
directly on her.
His eyes lit
up, his mouth flattened. Just a faint flicker, but it was enough to tell her
he’d recognized her.
And the
familiar hostility was gone.
Her mouth
went dry and she took another sip. He wasn’t going to come over. It was going
to be fine.
They would
keep the rampant hostility and no lines would be blurred.
It would be fine, right?
Except that
he was now coming over. Weaving through the crowd, his Stetson adding to his
height.
What the hell
was she supposed to do about that? The closer he got, the more her stomach
flipped beneath her ribs.
She was too
tired to fight. And the alcohol would probably allow her to say something that
she’d regret come Monday.
His clean
white shirt accented his shoulders and made his skin look darker, more
appealing. His face was shadowed by the brim of the Stetson.
He was there.
A short space separated them. He radiated something—a power.
A rawness.
She was
doomed.

Invisibility by Andrea Cremer and David Levithan
by: Andrea Cremer and David Levithan
published by: Philomel
publish date: May 7, 2013
Stephen has been invisible for practically his whole life — because of a curse his grandfather, a powerful cursecaster, bestowed on Stephen’s mother before Stephen was born. So when Elizabeth moves to Stephen’s NYC apartment building from Minnesota, no one is more surprised than he is that she can see him. A budding romance ensues, and when Stephen confides in Elizabeth about his predicament, the two of them decide to dive headfirst into the secret world of cursecasters and spellseekers to figure out a way to break the curse. But things don’t go as planned, especially when Stephen’s grandfather arrives in town, taking his anger out on everyone he sees. In the end, Elizabeth and Stephen must decide how big of a sacrifice they’re willing to make for Stephen to become visible — because the answer could mean the difference between life and death. At least for Elizabeth.
I was a little reluctant to read this book because (Ok world of book bloggers shoot me now) I wasn't a fan of the Nightshade Series. However, I've been a big fan of the books that David Levithan co-authors. It's like he really brings out the best in his co-authors. I felt like this was another example of this phenomenon. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the story. The aspect of invisibility must have been hard to work with and I thought it was dealt with well. I'm sure if I had gotten really nit-picky there were probably some mistakes here and there and some "oh come on! that couldn't happen!" sort of moments but when I read I tend to suspend disbelief and go with the flow.
I definitely recommend this book. It was a great YA book. Maybe not for the younger YA crowd because I thought it was a little heavy on the scary factors. Stephen's grandfather was really a bad guy and the curses were pretty evil things. Other than that, great story and I think it would have wide appeal.

But when Trent faces a court martial on false charges, only Laura can save him. What begins as an act of kindness to protect his career inflames a desire she thought long buried—and a love that won't be denied. But can she trust that this time he's back to stay?
Back to You is the third in the Coming Home series by Ms. Scott. I am so in love with this series. The thing that I love the most is that the author uses her military background to give you a very real look at the life of our soldiers and how war affects them. Back to You is such a compelling story about two people who are so in love, but don't know how to save their marriage. I felt like it was a very real look at how war doesn't just change the soldier, it can really change the family that is waiting for him or her. My heart was rooting for Trent and Laura to find their way back to each other.
Trent Davila has been hiding from his family. Continually volunteering for tours has caused a real rift in his marriage with Laura. The war has changed him and he finds himself not knowing how to be a dad and a husband. When he returns home to face court martial charges, Laura is reluctant to get involved. I was really happy that their finding their way back to each other took time. I don't think I would have believed it if it was quick. It was heart-wrenching, but the journey back to each other was so worth taking with them.
This is a great addition to the series. The next book, All for You, comes out on February 4. Make sure to come back on Tuesday to read my review and check out some great giveaways from the publisher!

He's in for the fight of his life . . .
Army captain Trent Davila loved his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children. But when he almost lost his life in combat, something inside him died. He couldn't explain the emptiness he felt or bridge the growing distance between him and his family—so he deployed again. And again. And again . . . until his marriage reached its breaking point. Now, with everything on the line, Trent has one last chance to prove to his wife that he can be the man she needs . . . if she'll have him
. . . to win back his only love.
Laura is blindsided when Trent returns home. Time and again, he chose his men over his family, and she's just beginning to put the pieces of her shattered heart back together. But when Trent faces a court martial on false charges, only Laura can save him. What begins as an act of kindness to protect his career inflames a desire she thought long buried—and a love that won't be denied. But can she trust that this time he's back to stay?

Wanted by J. Kenner
Author: J. Kenner
Publisher: Bantam Dell
Date of publication: January 2014
He is everything I crave, all I desperately want—and he is everything I can’t have.
Evan Black embodies my every fantasy. He is brilliant, fierce, and devastatingly handsome. But he is also headstrong, dangerous, and burdened with secrets.
My family warned me to stay away, that I could never handle Evan’s dark dealings or scarred past. Maybe I should have listened. Maybe I should have run. But our desire is undeniable, and some temptations you just can’t fight.
And from the moment we touch—the passion between us consuming us both—I know that I will never be the same.
Wanted is the first in a new series by J. Kenner. I loved her Stark trilogy and this new series is just as good. Evan Black was briefly introduced in Take Me, the follow-up novella to the Stark series. You guys know I am a sucker for friends to lovers stories. Angelina has known Evan for years. She has also wanted him for a long time. Evan has stayed away from Angie because he feels he is a bad bet for her. Their attraction is strong and very hot! There are some great love scenes.
I loved these two together. I think that they both were able to help each other figure out how to be true to themselves. Angelina has spent years doing things that her dead sister would have done with her life. She feels guilty over the circumstances of her sister's death. She also wants to constantly please her father. The problem is that she has been denying her true calling in life. Evan is able to help her work through this issue and make the right decision for her life. Evan is the ultimate bad boy. He has done what he had to do to make sure his mother and sister can survive. Now, he wants to clean up his act for Angelina.
The story has a little bit of mystery surrounding an ancient art book. I liked how that part of the story played out. The thing I also liked about this book is that it has a HEA in the end. Unlike her last trilogy, each of the books in this set will feature with a different couple. The next two books in the trilogy will deal with Evan's friends Cole and Tyler. I can't wait for Heated, which comes out in May!
