Joint Review: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Author: E. Lockhart
Publisher: Delacourte Press
Date of publication: May 2014

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

This one will be a hard one to review because talking about the plot would give stuff away.  I'll just say that I felt just OK about the story after I finished it.  To me, it wasn't anything totally original.  I had the twist figured out after the first third of the book.  I think that kind of ruined it for me.  I also thought the book was a little depressing.  None of the characters were very likable.  I think it had great potential, but in the end just didn't work for me.

I think this is going to be a big YA book this summer.  Kari and I are older so maybe we're a little more jaded, but I can see this book being really popular with the younger readers.  Unlike Kari, I didn't figure out the big plot twist so the ending wasn't ruined for me.  It wasn't a big surprise.  It lead to a lot of questions though.  I can't ask any of them because it would ruin the plot, but I will just say that the accident seemed really dumb.  I didn't get it.  At all.   Anyway, it was a short little book.  I'm sure there will be a lot of readers talking about it.
